I wouldn’t touch the plate shield. Just clean the paste and reapply. Keeps the thermal puddy clean an bonded. Once they lift it’s hard to get good contact.
Why wouldn't you clean the heatsync or processor with rubbing alcohol? I've never seen someone clean off thermal compound with a dry q tip and their finger.. don't think I'd recommend especially by leaving oils and sweat behind.
It doesn't matter lol as long as nothing is causing an electrical short the paste will do its job. It's not a nuclear reactor. You really have to be dumb to mess it up.
Just did this on mine because it started getting real hot and occasionally crashing. Sure enough the thermal paste was completely dry and crusty. So I re-pasted it with some fairly cheap Artic Cooling MX-2 and it's perfectly fine now. Thanks for the video.
A bit disconcerting that newly released consoles have nearly dried out compound. I'll do this with the X when I get one early in the new year. I'm not worried about the warranty. I've done this with every console I've owned - Sony or Microsoft. The original PS3 60GB benefitted hugely from a change of compound to a top quality paste after a reflow.
I agree, the first series s i took apart had signs of liquid on the psu too. I did that one on live stream. Technically Microsoft can't void the warranty for replacing the thermal paste anyway so I wouldn't worry too much either way :)
It’s not dried out it’s sopost to be that way so you don’t have pump out from the APU. You’ll have to reply paste 6 months to a year after. If you use wet paste.
All console thermalpaste are like this from factory. They dont need replacement its just that the thermalpaste havent made any heat transfer and they turn like they are dry but in fact they are not. A dry thermalpaste gets from usage in time with heat transfer
I did mention that in the video that it is usually dry from factory, and it may need replacing some day. I understand paste is dry from factory because the consoles sit for months before being sold. This video is intended to show the process for when the paste will need changing
@@TheCod3r I was just saying because some people maybe after the video will start to disassembly their console :) if the thermalpaste havent been used even if its a little dry didn’t loose any of its proprieties:)

Hey thanks for this. Glad to see that the heatsink is copper as I'm thinking liquid metal. Here's the REAL question, though, is it just optical illusion, or are you actually going righty - loosey, lefty - tighty on the screws?
I'm glad to see Microsoft has gotten rid of the security screws so it can now be opened with a regular torx bit, also since they have gotten rid of the warranty void if removed stickers and replaced them with just black ones does this mean the console would still be under warranty even if you have taken it apart?

Is it necessary to do this once you pull it out of the box? I just got mine last December and so far it has been running perfectly quiet with the console feeling quite cool and heat only coming out from the black fan like it normally should I also use a duster to clean around the console after every use too
No the VRMS are cooled but not the mosfets. They may be an issue in the future but judging by the design the warm air will probably pull away from the mosfets with the fan

@SteelRhinoXpress even if the country doesn't deem the stickers illegal the burden of proof is still on the manufacturer to prove what you did caused a failure
@@TheCod3r you're right, but at the same time they can have a stronger argument that you tampered with their product that lead to damage, instead of something being flawed.
@SteelRhinoXpress yes but they have to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the product has developed a fault specifically because of the device has been worked on by someone. They can't just claim that's the case. They have to have actual evidence of the fact. Without real evidence, the warranty is not void.
A multi-billion dollar company apparently has no idea how to keep their systems cool with the wrong and dry paste ... I appreciate the video for explaining how to disassemble the Xbox and reapply thermal paste but other than that this is pointless. This is more of a " down the road' just in case and WHEN it DOES DRY up this is the video to come for a reference.
But why on earth you need to replace a thermal paste on these machines when they are less than 1 year old 😆. Even putting the thermal paste won't make a lot of difference.

The x clamp if that's what you're referring to can go on any direction as long as the plastic piece is on the bottom
