    The smartest move Light made was the "her" bluff. Some TV people do it to pretend they have powers. But in reality, it's simply too common that someone has a special "her" (mother, sister, lover...)

      The whole "and her" bluff is a good one that rarely fails due to a number of factors. One, the odds of someone NOT having an important female in their lives, whether mother, sister, wife, or daughter is extremely low, espeically if you consider that Ray Pember is most likely in his 30's. In that case, the odds are Light's favour.

      I guess they meant that this time, Light finally killed his first innocent victim/s. Luckily, Lind L. Taylor was an actual criminal so he didn’t kill an innocent victim that time even with the intention of murdering an investigator doing his job.

    Light kills 12 innocent FBI agents. She says “I don’t know how I feel about that” gotta love when a show makes you truly morally lost lol

    • @djdomain
      @djdomain 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The show gives a idea of how "power corrupts". At first Light thought he was going to be punished by a shinigami for using the death note so he wrote out as many of the worst criminals he could think of before stating to Ryuk that he was prepared for the consequences, but upon learning that Ryuk didn't care morally about his actions and was just a spectator, he desired to purge more for the betterment of society, declaring himself to be the judging god of this new society. When fake L gave the broadcast, Light kills him for declaring Kira to be evil, lowering the bar to 'evil criminals, and those that would openly denounce me or hunt me'. Now in this episode he killed the 12 FBI agents (including the one that didn't even suspect him) as a means to sow distrust.
      * Spoilers for Upcoming Episodes *
      Light kills Naomi Misura via suicide, a woman who was looking to bring justice to the one who murdered her fiancee which made Light morally equivalent to the people he'd been killing. When he discovers Misa, his plan was to use her to get L's real name then kill her, only being prevented from doing so by Rem's threat. When Misa is captured and he is heavily suspected, he has the death note given away to someone who would use it for personal gain, meaning several relatively innocent people were murdered by his actions. After he had gotten rid of L and taken over leadership of the taskforce, he killed the director of the police when he was taken as a hostage for the notebook, and was prepared to kill his little sister who was taken as the 2nd hostage, but only relented because her capture wasn't public knowledge. When his father was given a notebook to get the shinigami eyes, he was prepared to kill his father if he had written Mellow's name down in order to keep the 13 Days fake rule going. Then finally he killed Kiyomi who was a loyal follower of Kira by getting her to burn herself to death to hide the fact that she had loose pages of the death note.
      TL:DR - Light's standards for killing quickly go from 'The Worst of the Worst', to 'Anyone who inconveniences me regardless of innocence'

    • @yasminesteinbauer8565
      @yasminesteinbauer8565 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Where do you see a moral gray area there? If you're not sure if it's okay to kill investigators at will, you need help.🤨

    • @jainelson8840
      @jainelson8840 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yasmine Steinbauer Lol it was a gut reaction from her. No judgement here. I was just commenting on how well the show makes you question morals. Moral philosophy can take you to some dark places (kill baby Hitler?) I think Death Note touches on these ideas great, and it’s understandable to think maybe if Lights cause is just, those who could stop him maybe should be stopped. I don’t agree that Lights cause is just, but I certainly understand not being sure.

    • @knightofcarrion7358
      @knightofcarrion7358 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      if the ends justifies the means, then those FBI arent innocent. If you are doing something that lets innocent people get hurt, are you really innocent? Catching Kira would lead to criminals coming back, more innocence getting hurt and killed. The police are suppose to protect the innocent, and catching kira does the opposite.

    The one thing this show doesn’t address is the issue of wrongful convictions/accusations.
    I imagine this is very tied up with Japan’s culture that only the guilty are ever really convicted, or even tried.

    • @Subjectivity13
      @Subjectivity13 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      99% conviction rate, baby! One of the most unfortunate side effects of conformist culture, despite the many, many positive effects.

    • @rickypedia999
      @rickypedia999 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@Subjectivity13 believe it or not, that 99% is certainly considered unusual, over 90% is actually fairly common. The US actually has higher than 90% as well. The UK has as high as 87% in some areas.
      It's a result of numerous factors, including the fact that prosecutors look bad if they fail to get a "guilty" and often either convince suspects to either confess for a lighter sentance or the prosecutor drops the case entirely due to not wanting to risk their reputation on a possible not-guilty. If a case actually goes to court it means the prosecutor is confident in an easy win.
      That said, it is also true that some corruption is heavily involved. For example, judges look bad to their bosses if they do not rule in a way the administration wants, which usually means guilty verdicts. Japan is rather notorious for this particular detail.

    • @joshualopez7035
      @joshualopez7035 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I guess one way to look at the show not addressing wrongful convictions, is that you have to form your own opinion. Do you believe in the Greater Good, the big picture? Everyone has their own thoughts on the subject.

    It is always important to remember that the idea of killing "innocent" isn't bad outright, it is simple; imagine that you are going to save the world from some sort of evil, you are going to make people's lifes better... all of that, just for the price of a few innocent people who got in the way? (Logically it is a chosen sacrifice of smaller amount of people for the sake of larger amount)

      They're trying to stop him "bringing justice to the world"... therefore, in his twisted logic, they _must_ be bad guys, and thus fair game. There _was_ a line, and Light gleefully jumped over it and skipped as far away from it as he could as soon as he decided to start using the notebook.

      Marc B. Poblet do you mean twisted morality instead of twisted logic? None of his logic is flawed given they are preventing him from dishing out justice to murderers and rapists and of course murder is a crime but from lights point of view they don’t deserve jail time they deserve death and since people are trying to stop him he’s writing them off

  • @Augoeides32
    @Augoeides32 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    From what I remember of the subtitled version of this episode, Ray Penbar didn't come off as forceful as he sounds in the English translation here. He definitely didn't want his wife involved with any police matters, but it was because she had voluntarily retired from her career with the FBI, because she wanted to have a family. However, she became one of the best agents in her field because of her passion for her work, and her husband didn't want her getting caught up in their gruesome world of Justice again. When he mentioned the kids running around, he was mostly joking, especially since it was basically something she supposedly wanted. And, obviously because he loved her, Ray wanted to protect her.
    This is a clear example of "old school lost in translation", which was pretty common in Anime and other foreign stuff that we translated around that era. Little things like this are why you while often hear about the infamous "Dubs Vs. Sub" fights that Anime fans will inevitably have, because it misinforms people greatly about what a certain episode/series was actually about. Although, these days Voice acting and translations in general have significantly improved, as you've already seen with stuff like My Hero Academia (which, in my opinion, did pretty well with their English interpreation of the characters motivations, but mostly because Japanese writers write their shows for Japanese audience, and we have other cultural motivations, so there's bound to be a difference on certain topics).
    Your in the Dark Ages of Anime now, but Death Note is a beloved classic! Probably the 4th or 5th Anime I watched, before I got permanently sucked into it all (although I suppose I was already absorbed by it all at this point). Death Note was also so fondly remembered, because it was one of the most mature Anime's to come out (in terms of broad appeal and complex storytelling); it wasn't just another show about a teenager going to school by day and killing hundreds of dudes by night as a time traveling space ninja, or something.

  • @utena8518
    @utena8518 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    He had to kill all the agents, otherwise if only Rey died, they would deduce that Kira would be one of the people Rey was investigating, and since he didn't have the face or names of the other agents, he had to use Rey to do it. The bosses of FBI teams sent the files to ALL AGENTS, therefore L cannot tell which one of the suspects did the murder ( because he does not know the suspect of which agent...)
    This show is very complex when it comes to morality and to be honest there is no actual right or wrong, its more about what the viewer decides what is right and wrong, also it was ingenious.

    Light's goal is to be an indisputable god, only with that "reputation" or power can he feel like he can alter the behaviour of people. It follows a pessimistic view that the general people will only elevate to a better behaviour if they fear this severe judgement upon them. Him trying to take out L in the beginning as well as eliminating the "foreign" FBI investigation into Japan served to add to this mystical ethos he's trying to create, because the idea that Kira is just a person isn't enough for the ambitious world change that Light is striving for.

    Light is now evil! He wants to be a god, Light doesn’t care who he kills now, he only cares about power! Pen broke or whatever his name is, didn’t do anything wrong, just his job as an FBI agent, investigating Light. Light also only wants to beat L! But L isn’t bad. Penbroke wasn’t as smart as Light or his girlfriend, because if he had thought about what Light had him do, he wouldn’t have sign their name. He should have figured out that he was going to die, but he could have saved the other agents! Light just out smarted him! Light is a Genius! And now a evil genius! Killing innocent FBI agents isn’t justice!
    Take care😊

    Yeah this is definitely a point. He killed Lind L Taylor earlier, thinking it was L, not knowing if they were a criminal, just because he accused him. Now he's killing other law enforcement, because they pose a danger to him. It's self-preservation, even if you'd consider it a stretch. Also, yeah Ray's fiance apparently was a former FBI agent that retired/quit to get married. Whether or not she really wanted to retire and the job was stressing her out too much to have kids on top of that, or it was something she really enjoyed but gave up for her fiance is up to you. ouo)/ "We talked about this" can suggest one or the other. ouo
    And I think Light was just bluffing when he said he did research, because he followed it up in his mind with, "Yeah you just told me, figures he'd have family here he's trying to protect" or whatever. It's like claiming "someone's family has a history of heart disease because of random-noticable-fact so yeah I know my shit", when it's just more likely that that's the case than it being NOT the case. Does...that make sense? ouo;
    "Who told you that?!" "You. Just now."
