you can also watch kaiji if you're interested in squid game kind of theme. i remember kaiji soundtracks is very similar with deathnote cuz most of them made by the same guy if im correct. and they're amazing
you should watch the “L’s Funeral” special episode next, it came out after the original series but takes place after this episode. its really interesting and has an amazing scene with Lights crazy laugh🙏🏼
Misa's lifetime is completely unclear since she received Jealous' lifetime when he sacrificed himself for her. So she could have thousands of years of lifetime. The red eyes of Light are only a stylistic means to visualize the return of Kira. Just as L is always depicted in blue and Light in red to mark them as adversaries.
Episode 25 has easily my most favorite shot of the whole series. It's when L asks Light why is he still just hanging around at the HQ and Light asks L if he's a nuisance. When L looks behind him at Light and Light's face is distorted by the glass stairs, it's such a perfect way of showing how much of a monster L sees Light as. L knows deep down inside that Light is Kira, and when he looks at Light, the glass stairs distorting such a fundamental part of recognizing humans as the facial symmetry is gives it a really jarring effect. It feels like in L sees Light more as an unbelievably evil monster that has just put on a human mask to try to look innocent, but there is something so fundamentally evil within Light that it's impossible for him to hide it from L.
Light is not necessarily evil, if he didn't kill the investigators he would have died too. Killing the criminals is not evil(in my eyes at least) and killing for survival is what everyone does and it is not considered evil(killing is killing whether you are killing a person or a chicken for food). L and Light are actually similar, their way of seeing the world is different. The fact that L used Linder L Tailor for his experiment shows that L sees the criminals the same way Light does. You can call Light the necessary evil this world needs to be a better place.
And L does not hate Light nor does he think that Light is an unbelievably evil monster. Yeah deep down he knows he is Kira, and the face distorting shows that he has a cover of an innocent human above the real Kira. But he is no monster, we all know that.
One of my favorite scenes as well is when they are in the rain and walk back inside all wet, it surprises me how many people don't get the symbolism of when L is drying off Lights feet, from the very beginning L said Kira thinks of himself as some God, what that scene depicts is how L knows Light is Kira and how he thinks he is "God" L is treating Light as such a God, from every line L says while doing it "Oh I'm sorry, I got some water on you let me wipe it off" "I can give you a massage" it's representing, you won I will treat you as what you think you are I will be your "peasant" He even says "I have to account for my sins" Giving Light the satisfaction of I'm judging you, and will make you pay for your sins because i am your God

Not only are they innocent, good people, not only does Light show no inner conflict at having to kill them, but he's positively gleeful about it. The way he mocks Naomi as she goes off helplessly to kill herself with a smirk on his face. No remorse whatsoever. He's a psychopath with a God complex. He wants to be a God, he stopped caring about justice long ago. I agree that L can be interpreted to be his mirror in many ways, and he's definitely morally grey. I think the difference between L and Light is L has a sense of purpose. Light only tried out the Death Note because he was bored, his life hollow; he's so clever that everything comes easily to him. If L had found the Death Note, I don't think he'd have cared enough to use it because his mind was adequately exercised, he has mysteries to solve and toys to play with

I was so surprised they killed off L with 12 episodes left. L was a main character, after all. Even though it was sad, it’s also an incredibly well-directed scene. “Light Yagami... I wasn’t wrong, but I...” -L’s final thoughts in the manga.

You hit the nail on the head with the Jesus reference. The show has a lot of biblical references that you'll especially see in the openings and endings. Even the apple is a reference to the first sin of Eve taking forbidden fruit. If I remember correctly, the notebook literally transitions into an apple in one of the openings.
Misas lifespan is actually incredibly large so it's not a big deal for her to take the eye deal since she's already going to live well over any human age(probably in the 1000s). Remember when gelous saved her all of a Shinigamis remaining lifespan went into misa. Not to mention now that Rem died for her she just acquired Rems lifespan.
I highly doubt her lifespan was in the thousands, but definitely longer than average. For all we know both shinigami could have only had 10 years. Lights lifespan seen in episode 3 was 93312639. Misa's lifespan was 1542306 In
About the symbolism, those only exist in anime. There is almost nothing like that in the manga version and it is more focused on the deduction. I personally prefer the manga version. The anime studio obviously chose the light side, hence, they cut a lot of L and new characters' thinking time and changed it with symbolism.
17:20 Light was able to recover his memories by touching the notebook and Misa don't is because the notebook was Light's own notebook (with the instructions in it written by Ryuk). His memories was temporal because Higuchi was the owner in that moment (and pass to Light again when he kill him). And that specific notebook was linked to Rem because Light make them exchange notebooks before.

Loving your reactions as always. Since you’ve finally reached this point, I just want to point out a couple things that were added or left out from the manga. 1: After they took the death note to headquarters, L put all the pieces together and figured out rthe whole shinigami eyes deal thing, so he actually knew he was probably going to die, not because he had a feeling, but because he remembered the second Kira (Misa) had the eyes and saw his real name before she was arrested. 2: Even though L was able to confirm in the end that Light was Kira, he was still unsatisfied I would say. As you remember, L said in the early episodes, he was childish and hated to lose. As he was passing away, he said to himself “Light Yagami… so you really are Kira, but I…”. Also, that scene where he was drying his feet never happened

From what ive heard, there are many alternate ending (obviously lots of fan made ones too), where this goes a bit different. In one, ive heard, L predicted his inevitable death well before episode 5, and had surgery to put some kind of defibrillator-like device near his heart. When the end of episode 25 happens, L is only dead for a short while, before the device restarts his heart and he busts Kira.
Misa didn’t get her memories back because the page Rem touched her with was from Light’s Death Note, meaning that it didn’t contain her memories of ever being Kira. However, it contains Light’s memories so he got his back when he touched it. Misa could only regain her memories if she touched the original notebook Rem gave to her, that’s what contains her memories...but now it’s attached to Ryuk because Light swapped them out so he’d have his memories in both Death Notes.
Misa likely had back whatever her OG lifespan was before the deal. It goes like this: 1. Gelus gives her whatever lifespan he had at the time. 2. She makes the eye deal with Rem, which halves whatever she had, which goes to Rem. 3. She makes the deal with Ryuk, which goes to him. 4. Rem kills L and Watari, and gets dusted. 5. All of the years that Rem had left goes to Misa, and that includes the OG half that she took from her. All in all, even if the Og half is all that Rem had, she got back more than what Ryuk took from her. If anyone can make corrections, that'd be great
I'm sure you already figured it out but, about the scene where L kneels in front of Light- It is a biblical reference. In the Bible, Jesus washes the feet of sinners-explained as simply as possible, this is to show that he does not consider himself to be “above” or “greater” than them. L washing Light’s feet symbolizes that while L is “the good guy” and Light is evil, L still sees them as equals-both morally and intellectually. They have both done good, and they have both done wrong.
Higuchi was still the owner of the book when Rem touched Misa with the page. That's why she didn't get her memories back at first. As for Lights eyes, he didn't take the deal atleast not yet. That was just to let the viewers know that Kira was back. As for Misa Misa, she had a long lifespan because of Jealous saving her life
An anime you should watch is Code Geass: Lelouch of The Rebellion. Anyone including you watches and loves Death Note must-watch Code Geass. The Protagonist has been compared to Light for years but his ways of changing the world are different from Light.

I wish there were more people on Kira’s side. Everybody always roots for L. I was always team Light because to me a good villain is what makes a good story. And if you think about it, L and Light are to sides of the same coin, the only difference is that the show tells us one is on the good side and the other on the evil side. But in reality both are willing to do whatever it takes to reach their goals.
They are not trying to reach the same goal L is trying to solve murders to convict people who are serial killers or (not your average criminal) but Light wants to play God and a way to do that is to just kill criminals and people who go against him. Their motivations are not the same, I am not saying that L is this altruistic person but he is someone with great mental capacity, he uses that to prosecute people and bring them to justice. While Kira is the God complex that Light got from having the power. Of course, this is not to bring into question the anime logic of Light only killing Japanese people and somehow wars around the world stoping but I accept that not that only crazy lip of logic in the anime.

In the theatrical version, there is a second ending. L writes down the date of his death in the notebook in advance, and then the second person writes him in the notebook and it will not take effect. L uses this trick to fake death, secretly investigate and find the true culprit. Who.

Fun fact: L had less than 5 years to live anyway, rem killed L then her lifespan went to misa, she had already taken the eye deal at this point yet in the end she died at the end less than 6 years later, she halted her lifespan than had L’s + rem’s lifespan added on to it so although you’d think they would have long lives they really didn’t have much time left
Misa's lifespan was extended long beyond its natural end when she inherited Gelous' remaining years after he saved her, so im guessing she still has a pretty substantial lifespan :) EDIT: i just noticed this has been said multiple times in the comments XD sorry :P
Higuchi is actually 32 years old in the anime, but you are absolutely right that the way he is depicted, and usually what happens to businesses regarding higher positions, it would all make sense if he was actually 45 to 50. Indeed. Its definitely not portrayed as well as it could be, to show his intended age. He still looks disgusting, and he still looks like over ~45 years old, they simply messed it up. Something I just realized is how L died silently, meaning Rem must have written 'L dies in silence' since he was cut off from talking after the heart attack started. In other words, L died watching Light smirk and couldn't say anything to warn everyone else that he was right all along. Imagine how different this event would have unfolded if L said 'Light is Kira!' or '13 day rule is fake!' right before he died. Instead, Light takes control of the investigation and distracts them from what L was doing just before he died and avoids suspicion by trying to 'confront Rem' even though he knew Rem was dead and recovers her Deathnote before anyone could find it or even realize she had one. What a cruel fate for L.

I don't think cutting Misa cutting her lifespan in half again would affect her that much. Since Gelus saved her, she got all the remaining years he had left to live. And even if they don't kill that often, I'm assuming shinigamis have at least a hundred or a couple hundred years left to live, so Misa lifespan would be at least 160 years when Gelus saved her, assuming she would've lived for about 80 years. So cutting her lifespan in half twice would result in her having _at least_ 40 years left to live and that's just the worst case scenario, Gelus probably had much more than 100 years. So I think Misa would live for a long time, she might even have more years left to live than Light or any normal human. edit: I forgot to mention but since Rem died after killing L and Watari, Misa would receive all her remaining years too. We saw Rem kill at least 3 times in the series so that's probably like a 100 years added to her lifespan and that's just the murders we saw, there was probably a lot more. So in conclusion, Misa probably has hundreds or even thousands of years left to live.
I don't see why its horrible to be happy at your victory ! Plus if Light would not have killed L , he would have been dead ; its was all about who outdid the other one first . Light understood it as his victory so people questioning him 'smiling' on his long-awaited hard fought victory is weird . I commented this on the last video as well, but L really didn't think this plan through. It was a good plan but revealing Matsuda's face was such an unnecessary risk, his whole plan should've failed because of that. They didn't have to reveal his face, Higuchi would've figured out it was him pretty quickly just by listening to his story. When he turned on the TV, his first thought was already Matsuda, the reveal just confirmed it. As soon as Matsuda's face was revealed, people would post the clip or photos of him online and all Higuchi would have to do is to make the eye deal with Rem and he could easily kill him. I guess the writers just didn't think of this because it's definitely not something that L just would overlook.

The anime came out around 2006 and the story was written years before. Technology and the internet weren't as big back then. Taking a video was probably out of the question. Taking a picture with a cellphone might be iffy too.
Due to the intention to force Higuchi to appear there it was a smart move to show the face of the threat Higuchi is facing. So he was ultimate hooked and forced to hunt Matsuda. By forgetting that the task force including L were hunting him...idk

Higuchi dies while the primary suspect for being the first Kira is holding the Death Note and L practically does nothing LMAO. For how smart they write these characters to be they do make some peculiar decisions.

The obvious reason he doesn't take every precaution in safeguarding his life is because the story has to go in a certain direction. My point was if you're gonna write him as of genius level intellect and show him to bend rules when willing for his own ends then it's peculiar that here he basically does the least amount possible and even keeps Light on as part of the crew. I could also point back to them conveniently forgetting about the hair and fiber evidence they had on Misa (Lights girlfriend) that was supposedly enough for a conviction that has been conveniently forgotten to push the story along as well.

You hit the nail on the head with the Jesus reference. The show has a lot of biblical references that you'll especially see in the openings and endings. Even the apple is a reference to the first sin of Eve taking forbidden fruit. If I remember correctly, the notebook literally transitions into an apple in one of the openings.
Misas lifespan is actually incredibly large so it's not a big deal for her to take the eye deal since she's already going to live well over any human age(probably in the 1000s). Remember when gelous saved her all of a Shinigamis remaining lifespan went into misa. Not to mention now that Rem died for her she just acquired Rems lifespan.

I highly doubt her lifespan was in the thousands, but definitely longer than average. For all we know both shinigami could have only had 10 years. Lights lifespan seen in episode 3 was 93312639. Misa's lifespan was 1542306 In

About the symbolism, those only exist in anime. There is almost nothing like that in the manga version and it is more focused on the deduction.
I personally prefer the manga version. The anime studio obviously chose the light side, hence, they cut a lot of L and new characters' thinking time and changed it with symbolism.

17:20 Light was able to recover his memories by touching the notebook and Misa don't is because the notebook was Light's own notebook (with the instructions in it written by Ryuk). His memories was temporal because Higuchi was the owner in that moment (and pass to Light again when he kill him).
And that specific notebook was linked to Rem because Light make them exchange notebooks before.

Since you’ve finally reached this point, I just want to point out a couple things that were added or left out from the manga. 1: After they took the death note to headquarters, L put all the pieces together and figured out rthe whole shinigami eyes deal thing, so he actually knew he was probably going to die, not because he had a feeling, but because he remembered the second Kira (Misa) had the eyes and saw his real name before she was arrested. 2: Even though L was able to confirm in the end that Light was Kira, he was still unsatisfied I would say. As you remember, L said in the early episodes, he was childish and hated to lose. As he was passing away, he said to himself “Light Yagami… so you really are Kira, but I…”. Also, that scene where he was drying his feet never happened

From what ive heard, there are many alternate ending (obviously lots of fan made ones too), where this goes a bit different.
In one, ive heard, L predicted his inevitable death well before episode 5, and had surgery to put some kind of defibrillator-like device near his heart. When the end of episode 25 happens, L is only dead for a short while, before the device restarts his heart and he busts Kira.

Misa didn’t get her memories back because the page Rem touched her with was from Light’s Death Note, meaning that it didn’t contain her memories of ever being Kira. However, it contains Light’s memories so he got his back when he touched it. Misa could only regain her memories if she touched the original notebook Rem gave to her, that’s what contains her memories...but now it’s attached to Ryuk because Light swapped them out so he’d have his memories in both Death Notes.

It took: Light, missa, 2 death notes, 2 shinigamis and a bunch of twisted ways to get rid of 1 person: L who only ever played clean.

Misa likely had back whatever her OG lifespan was before the deal. It goes like this:
1. Gelus gives her whatever lifespan he had at the time.
2. She makes the eye deal with Rem, which halves whatever she had, which goes to Rem.
3. She makes the deal with Ryuk, which goes to him.
4. Rem kills L and Watari, and gets dusted.
5. All of the years that Rem had left goes to Misa, and that includes the OG half that she took from her.
All in all, even if the Og half is all that Rem had, she got back more than what Ryuk took from her.

It is a biblical reference. In the Bible, Jesus washes the feet of sinners-explained as simply as possible, this is to show that he does not consider himself to be “above” or “greater” than them. L washing Light’s feet symbolizes that while L is “the good guy” and Light is evil, L still sees them as equals-both morally and intellectually. They have both done good, and they have both done wrong.

Higuchi was still the owner of the book when Rem touched Misa with the page. That's why she didn't get her memories back at first. As for Lights eyes, he didn't take the deal atleast not yet. That was just to let the viewers know that Kira was back. As for Misa Misa, she had a long lifespan because of Jealous saving her life

I wish there were more people on Kira’s side. Everybody always roots for L. I was always team Light because to me a good villain is what makes a good story. And if you think about it, L and Light are to sides of the same coin, the only difference is that the show tells us one is on the good side and the other on the evil side. But in reality both are willing to do whatever it takes to reach their goals.
They are not trying to reach the same goal L is trying to solve murders to convict people who are serial killers or (not your average criminal) but Light wants to play God and a way to do that is to just kill criminals and people who go against him. Their motivations are not the same, I am not saying that L is this altruistic person but he is someone with great mental capacity, he uses that to prosecute people and bring them to justice. While Kira is the God complex that Light got from having the power.
Of course, this is not to bring into question the anime logic of Light only killing Japanese people and somehow wars around the world stoping but I accept that not that only crazy lip of logic in the anime.

In the theatrical version, there is a second ending. L writes down the date of his death in the notebook in advance, and then the second person writes him in the notebook and it will not take effect. L uses this trick to fake death, secretly investigate and find the true culprit. Who.

Fun fact: L had less than 5 years to live anyway, rem killed L then her lifespan went to misa, she had already taken the eye deal at this point yet in the end she died at the end less than 6 years later, she halted her lifespan than had L’s + rem’s lifespan added on to it so although you’d think they would have long lives they really didn’t have much time left
Misa's lifespan was extended long beyond its natural end when she inherited Gelous' remaining years after he saved her, so im guessing she still has a pretty substantial lifespan :)

Higuchi is actually 32 years old in the anime, but you are absolutely right that the way he is depicted, and usually what happens to businesses regarding higher positions, it would all make sense if he was actually 45 to 50. Indeed. Its definitely not portrayed as well as it could be, to show his intended age. He still looks disgusting, and he still looks like over ~45 years old, they simply messed it up. Comments do not change this.
Yeah.....in actuality, L never counted on this whole Kira thing being supernatural, once he realized that it was, and that there could be multiple books in play, all with possibly the same rules as the one they have, he knew it be only a matter of time before he would end up dead

Something I just realized is how L died silently, meaning Rem must have written 'L dies in silence' since he was cut off from talking after the heart attack started. In other words, L died watching Light smirk and couldn't say anything to warn everyone else that he was right all along. Imagine how different this event would have unfolded if L said 'Light is Kira!' or '13 day rule is fake!' right before he died. Instead, Light takes control of the investigation and distracts them from what L was doing just before he died and avoids suspicion by trying to 'confront Rem' even though he knew Rem was dead and recovers her Deathnote before anyone could find it or even realize she had one. What a cruel fate for L.

I don't think cutting Misa cutting her lifespan in half again would affect her that much. Since Gelus saved her, she got all the remaining years he had left to live. And even if they don't kill that often, I'm assuming shinigamis have at least a hundred or a couple hundred years left to live, so Misa lifespan would be at least 160 years when Gelus saved her, assuming she would've lived for about 80 years. So cutting her lifespan in half twice would result in her having _at least_ 40 years left to live and that's just the worst case scenario, Gelus probably had much more than 100 years. So I think Misa would live for a long time, she might even have more years left to live than Light or any normal human.
edit: I forgot to mention but since Rem died after killing L and Watari, Misa would receive all her remaining years too. We saw Rem kill at least 3 times in the series so that's probably like a 100 years added to her lifespan and that's just the murders we saw, there was probably a lot more. So in conclusion, Misa probably has hundreds or even thousands of years left to live.

I commented this on the last video as well, but L really didn't think this plan through. It was a good plan but revealing Matsuda's face was such an unnecessary risk, his whole plan should've failed because of that. They didn't have to reveal his face, Higuchi would've figured out it was him pretty quickly just by listening to his story. When he turned on the TV, his first thought was already Matsuda, the reveal just confirmed it. As soon as Matsuda's face was revealed, people would post the clip or photos of him online and all Higuchi would have to do is to make the eye deal with Rem and he could easily kill him. I guess the writers just didn't think of this because it's definitely not something that L just would overlook.
@xInfoRaderx Yeah, that makes sense. I guess L's plan was a great plan afterall. In that case tho, Higuchi was the stupid one for not trying to look for clips or photos on the internet, it would've made his job a lot easier.
The anime came out around 2006 and the story was written years before. Technology and the internet weren't as big back then. Taking a video was probably out of the question. Taking a picture with a cellphone might be iffy too.
Due to the intention to force Higuchi to appear there it was a smart move to show the face of the threat Higuchi is facing. So he was ultimate hooked and forced to hunt Matsuda. By forgetting that the task force including L were hunting him...idk

The obvious reason he doesn't take every precaution in safeguarding his life is because the story has to go in a certain direction. My point was if you're gonna write him as of genius level intellect and show him to bend rules when willing for his own ends then it's peculiar that here he basically does the least amount possible and even keeps Light on as part of the crew. I could also point back to them conveniently forgetting about the hair and fiber evidence they had on Misa (Lights girlfriend) that was supposedly enough for a conviction that has been conveniently forgotten to push the story along as well.
