It really shows you the deepest recesses of thought that L and Light both undergo, and is a testament to the incredible writing in this show. No wonder you guys have different favorites 8 )
One of the great appeals of the show is the chess match between L and Light. Both trying to find vital information on the other, so they can dispense there own justice upon them, while at the same time trying to keep that information of themselves hidden from their worthy opponent.

The guy at the desk said Light has help with investigations before and he's the chiefs son meaning he has connections she doesn't have. Light is her fastest way to L at that moment.
L plays by the rules and the laws of the land. Law enforcement put their lives on the line all day every day for our sakes, and so did those FBI agents. L didn't want them to die. He sent them to tail and investigate those suspects. Light, on the other hand, wants to kill anyone and everyone he doesn't like. Anyone that he deems as "criminals", anyone who would challenge him. There's definitely good and evil here. L wants to uphold the laws that were chosen by society. Light wants to tear down those laws and replace them with his own, not letting society choose.

And it's clear that L would rather follow the law first. The reasons he ever does anything that would be considered bad would be when he can't do anything else. While Light was doing this for his own sense of justice, L was doing it for society's justice. And he had no reason to lie, he was in a room alone. When there was new Kira after Light's death who was killing people, L's successor Near ignored the case because he thought it wasn't interesting. How can you not see the connection? Ray said that the same day he investigated Kira it was a bus jacking where him and kira was which is a little bit strange. Ray also said he showed his ID card to someone on that bus and everyone in the world knows that Kira needs a name to kill people. She was talking to the witnesses about the bus jacking. She figured it out that Kira was the one that murdered her fiance. After all she was one of the smartest FBI agent. The other at the task force don't know these information that Naomi have that's why she was able to figure it out so easily
She's not smarter than L, Naomi (The fiance) had a connection which Rey provided the details to her while L doesn't know any of the details, if L knew the details he would put it together quicker and not (spoiler) reveal his true name like what Naomi did
