Light is 17 and L is 24, but they’re supposed to be the 2 smartest people in Japan at the time, so I guess that’s why they get so much respect and are treated as older than what they are. Japanese culture tends to treat children as little adults and not babies, because they don’t have the same problems with child abduction or child abuse like in the west. 6 year olds ride the train to school by themselves over there, so a 17 year old is definitely considered a grown man.
Yeah but the female agent was American, so it wouldn't make sense for her to adopt that Japanese culture.

@@Salcido51Jose She couldn’t be Japanese enough to adopt that level of their culture. The FBI only takes long term American cuticles, and not foreign nationals. It’s probable she has Japanese heritage, but it wouldn’t be fair to call her Japanese

Many people who are born in America from parents with different nationalities usually go by their parents nationality especially if they have dual citizenship, Irish American, Mexican American, Japanese American to name a few. Her parents still have a huge influence on her an on how she learned growing up, their customs.
@@Salcido51Jose I’m literally an FBI agent, so I know their hiring procedures. They do not hire people who are not long term American citizens who’s backgrounds can be checked out easily. This character would have had to have either been born in the US, or lived there for a long time. When you’re mentioning all this “many people born in America” stuff, you’re ignoring that she was an FBI agent. Someone who had been in the US enough to get a job in said organisation would not be living with the cultural attitudes of their parents. In death note, she is only 26. That’s three years above the minimum age to join the FBI. In order to get in that young, there is no way that you could be outside of the US enough to have a dual citizenship and stay in Japan for any substantial length of time. Also, the way Ray talked, it is heavily implied that it is the first time he is meeting her parents in person. They’re literally engaged to be married and he hasn’t visited them, or if he has, barely. That shows that Naomi was not staying in Japan with them for any length of time. So it just doesn’t fit that a woman who has lived in the US enough to be accepted for the FBI, whose fiancé hasn’t even met her Japanese parents until now, and who is only 26 as an agent, would be going around still clinging to cultural attitudes of Japanese people. Her saturation in the US would be too great, it would be strange for her to maintain those while with an American fiancé. In short, it just doesn’t make sense that Naomi would consider Light a grown man just because she has Japanese heritage/parents. There’s no indication that she has maintained strong ties to it and implications that she has distanced herself.

"L" is an obsessive character with a lot of repetitive compulsive weird actions. That's why he's always eating candy, barely sleeps, never use shoes, sits grabbing he's knees, walks hunched, picks the phone in a strange way, etc... he's full of stuff like that.
Imagine if he got more sleep... he could've solved the case sooner since he would've gotten better results mentally giving his brain the proper rest.
@@eternallegacy89 You're probably right, but this can swing both ways to some extent. Consider that in sleep deprivation, especially reaching delirium states, you're more likely to think laterally (i.e. "more creatively"), which is basically L's M.O. in finding success--by piecing together unlikely associations. The dude is a genius either way, but perhaps it's possible that his lack of sleep contributes to a net positive for his creative productivity.
But more likely, he would probably function better overall if he just had a healthy sleeping schedule. He has a stressful job so it's reasonable that he wouldn't, though--crime doesn't sleep and the dude is obsessive.

Ryuk was laughing when Naomi gave the fake name and was laughing when Light's plan worked because he doesn't pick a side, he's having fun with watever happens.
(Also, the dramatic potato chip scene will be forever iconic)
Pro-tip about anime... everyone is in high school. You have to suspend your disbelief. :D

L is more selfish not cocky. He does it more for self-interest if the case is "interesting" under the guise of Justice. Light has a God Complex and anyone threatening his utopia is an enemy.
L also has a god complex. That's how he knows.

Light is a HS kid but he has worked with the cops before and he's extremely smart so it's not really far fetched lol
Light is brilliantly smart, but his ego causes him to err in small ways. As you can see, even the smallest shadow of suspicion will not go unnoticed by L.
There's a lot of ways Light could have handled being put under such intense scrutiny. The way he chose demonstrates his pride: he puts on the mask of a perfect honor student, so perfect that it comes across as suspect to anyone watching.
Well he also looks at sexy pics without jacking it - totally normal 😂

The legendary potato chip scene, I've been waiting for this.
In the Japanese comics world, the setting of high school student detectives often appears. For example, like "The Kindaichi Case Files" and "Case Closed (also known as Detective Conan)"
To you it's weird to think that Light could be in the task force because he is young, but remember that:
He is the son of a police chief
Which mean in fact if you don't know Light is Kira you probably think it is clearly possible that he is in the task forces with his dad
Also the real reason she accept to give her identity is because she... Deep in her heart probably was thinking that he was L, because Light and L are quite similar in some points. And she really wanted to become close to L because she admired him. I hope I gave you some light on how she was thinking !

To be fair, Light has the power of a god... It also brings in the question of Gods, and their ability to judge us.
Its more a symbol of sadness than death.
When L said that he did weird things too when he was 17,he was referring to when he bathe himself in a washing machine. This was confirmed in the novel L changes the world.

As far as I know, L did not send those FBI agents for an experiment. He needed another party to investigate the Japanese police so he requested for FBI agents. It wasn't just to try something out but was really to investigate Kira. It just so happened that they died under his watch.

Light is not a high school student , he is in police academy and not just that nation level top intellect and the representative of the police academy students. She is emotional and light is baiting her , he is saying he could get her inside the task force team under L for kira investigation . For credibility he just said details about why it's very tight and closed group L selected for this investigation right before that. She also asked how do you know such confidential details ? Then only he says he is also a part of this investigation besides that you just saw her notice how the officers in his father's office praised him for helping them solve many cases . She just showed her vulnerability that she has high hopes and feeling that L would allow her to meet them personally , shows how desperate she is. Light just used that desparation by saying exactly what she wants "get into the investigation task force and help them catch Kira her finance's murderer ". This anime is a complexly written screenplay with complex dialogues . You have remember every crucial pivotal scenes and dialogues . Especially whenever the bgm gets intense , atleast remember those scenes and dialogues . Would help you get rid of confusion like you have right now . Thank you 😁. Btw light shade glossy lipsticks look so much prettier than the dark ones you wear . The dark ones makes the inner side of your lips looks so white whenever you talk and also it feels like your lips can't contain your teeth . You look kinda like that innocent portrayal of Amanda Seyfried from Jennifer's body movie 😁.

Idk if anyone’s commented it yet, but the BB murder cases mentioned in this episode are actually a plot for a Death Note book (or at least released as a book instead of a manga in the US. I can’t vouch for other countries though)! You guys should read it if you’re interested 😁 I haven’t read it in years, but I remember it being pretty good

It was a genius part on Light to bring Ryuk into the fold to get a final check on the cameras. This makes sure that L doesn't know that Light knows about the cameras which Light used against him.
about the conversation about the fbi girl at the beginning... its pretty clear the reason she didnt think it was that weird or far fetched is the cop clearly mentioned in front of her that light has helped in the past, and that his dad is the lead of the task force... that conversation in front of her showed the police knew and trusted him. o she had no reason at all not to believe him, when that cop basically confirmed he helps out alot and is trusted by them.
Actually that door handle thing is true . Slight adjustment to find out wether someone has used it or not . I do lots of things like this because I am paranoid but have saved me almost all the time. Little things and checks like that .
Most famous potato chip in anime history
Brad Swaile made Light his character in this episode in the same way Johnny Young Bosch did with Lelouch. With all due respect to Mamoru Miyano, but that potato chip line just sounds more deliciously ridiculous in Brad's portrayal.
If I were you, I'd pay a bit more attention to that soap opera Light's sister was watching.

Most memorable and favorite episode IMO
Yes, symbolism is hugely important in this show and in other anime.
(Mild spoilers upcoming).
Death note does a very interesting thing when it makes this horrible villain the main character. The show also gives Light Yagami as many positive traits as possible; he's ambitious, attractive, intelligent, socially skilled, etc. By placing the viewer inside the mind of the villain and giving that villain desirable qualities, the show is making a steel man of Light's argument. This is what makes death note so good. It doesn't reduce the villain to stereotypes or a straw man. It makes the villain as powerful as they possibly can be, and causes the viewer to question their own morals. Ultimately, Light is still a villain and should not be supported, but the show is brilliant in making us sympathize or even like somebody this horrible. People who are Team Light are missing this point. You're not supposed to root for him, you're supposed to root against him despite his obvious formidability.
#TeamMatsuda #TeamSoichiro, the only two "good" characters in this story. These two are the people you should be like.

There's a lot of food stuff in this series, but one thing about L is he really has a sweet tooth. Also L has so many odd mannerisms you'll notice as it goes on. One cool thing is the Japanese live action movie actor who plays L copies them.

Not 100% sure, the age doesn't come up in the anime and it's been almost a decade since I read the Manga but I *think* L is about 2 years older than Light.
