This scene always hurts. Dadan may not have admitted it, but she raised ASL and was basically like a mother for them. Even Garp couldn't look her in the eye...man this is painful
John Irons: What is Luffy's mother like? Was she beautiful? What happened to her? Did she die when Luffy was a baby? Oda: I think she's alive. I'm still thinking hard about this. [Laughs] But if she does appear in the story, then she'll be a very tough-looking woman. And strict. There's no way that she's a beautiful mother. She's got this typical middle-aged woman's permed hair. ^Shonen Jump interview 2009. By all intents and purposes Dadan is ASL's mother
I love the detail that Garp was prepared for everything that she could have possibly said or done to him, and was willing to accept it as atonement, in some small way. But he was not ready to face her tears, and no matter how much he tried to harden his heart, the moment he saw her unable to hide how much she loved the boys, he nearly cracked with guilt. It took her preparing her fist again to pull Garp back to his cold poker face.
jinbe's speech is one of my fav. moments of him. he forces luffy to see the reality of the situation and how so many people defeated him and that luffy's own guilt in the ordeal is leading him astray. this shows luffy has a very long road ahead of him if he wishes to be the pirate king.
My heart breaks for Ace in this scene too. It kind of felt like his confession that he was only holding on to life for Luffy. Of course he was happy that he was in good hands without him. But he then threw caution to the wind, and put himself in that predicament in Marineford. Depression will do that to you.
Moria right in that sense, Luffy ain't ready for the new world. That's why in a way, Luffy still lucky that he only lost Ace, i think. While Moria lost everything.
Shanks-“It’s okay to cry” That’s a real man anyways the real world is just cruel to men and act like we have to be strong for it but that’s not fair to us we should be able to runaway from the world sometimes and have someone who can be strong for us to and be a shoulder for us to support ourselves when we need to be weak and cry for a moment
I love this episode. I think it describes quite well what depression looks like and mental distress. Having emotionally supporting people arround us can really help make things better eventhough it happends faster here because of the fictional aspects. Those people not being not family but the ones that we are attached to emotioanlly. Jinbe's and Shanks' words are very simple but right and meaningful. A master piece. Fun fact : The episode number is 505 which can be looked like SOS. On purpose or not, it's fun to notice.
I always cry at this scene, its because dadan was so scared of garp she even had to watch over 2 children and she started to love them so much, she didnt hesitate attacking garp + infront of marines
That’s a real man anyways the real world is just cruel to men and act like we have to be strong for it but that’s not fair to us we should be able to runaway from the world sometimes and have someone who can be strong for us to and be a shoulder for us to support ourselves when we need to be weak and cry for a moment
Out of all the sad scenes with Ace on it; his death, his last talk with Garp, his backstory, and whatever depressing scenes there are with Ace… THIS scene is what slapped the shit out of me the most. I cried pathetically when Dadan's expression was filled with grief despite resulting in violence.
I call this episode the official episode Luffy finally joined his own crew. By that I say obviously not literally, but emotionally. My theory is every straw hat has their own moment in which they all break down, let their inhibitions go, and their let their true feelings and emotions go/look to their *Nakama as their own safe haven* Zoro's moment in my opinion: after the Mihawk fight. Nami's moment: At Arlong Park, when she finally breaks down and ask for help. Ussop's moment: At Water 7, apologizing to Luffy. Sanji's moment: ... Chopper's moment: Leaving Drum Island Robin's moment: Breaking down at Ennies Lobby Franky moment: Post Ennies Lobby, when he's joining the crew. Brooke's moment: Breaks down playing Piano
I forgot about that yah the dub dud great ( I first watched One piece in dub but when the dub reach it's latest episode I had to switch to sub they both of their appeal
Something I realized when it comes to Garp post-Marineford, in all his scenes (as few as they were) when it comes to discussing Luffy there wasn't any talk about trying to make him into a marine. Ace's death at the hands of the marines was the point Garp accepted Luffy will never be a marine... At least that's what I think.
Dadan take care of both Ace and Luffy because she was scared of Garp She always new that Garp is stronger than her and if he wanted Garp could just arrest her and throw her in jail But not anymore From Dadan pov Garp just let Ace die He choose duty over family and that's something Dadan can't forgive or forget Here we see something amazing Dadan was not afraid of Garp anymore And also... I wonder if Garp chose to come to this place after the war because he new that Dadan was going to beat him. He didn't defend himself, he just took it Some way of self punishment
2:34 Even while being in so much pain, Dadan was still more worried about Luffy than anything else. She truly was their mother at the end of the day. Tears me up every time man...
This scene was one of the most emotional in the series to me. When i watched Marineford and ASL Arc, i forgot about the Straw Hats, i was in the same line as Luffy and too focus about Ace... Seeing Luffy that hurt and broken made me feel so bad for him, and i wasn't sure how he was going to recover from this, until Jimbei make him to think about his crew, when he remembered one by one i cried with him at the same time, i just wanted to see the Straw Hats so much like Luffy did in that scene
Oda's genius. I forgot all about his crew also because of LUFFYS so many Ls and after Jimbe's speexh I was like oh shit he's still got his fvcking crew. Im so excited on that back to Sabaody!
This scene always gets to me man. A mother's love is some of the strongest out there. ASL may not have been Dadan's blood, but she truly loved those boys.
The emotional lows in One Piece are fucking rought, just as much as the emotional highs are hype. I know exactly what happens and where the story is going, as much as anyone other than Oda can at this point, and seeing Dadan beat Garp makes me feel just awful still. So much of this middle portion of the story is so fucking tough to watch, basically starting with Luffy and Usopp fighting, through Merry's death (which I still have never been able to watch without crying) to this. But that's why it's called peak fiction. But you know what they say, after every uphill there's bound to be a downhill and vice versa, for those of you just getting into it or following along.
The first time I seen this episode shit HURT! Every time Dadan says “Luffy!!!! don’t be defeated!” HITS Everytime Luffy thinks about his crew it makes me cherish my friends
I’m not sure if this line is just not shown in the video but in the dub dadan says “why did you make me raise them if it was going to end this way” that line just hits so hard when you think about it. One of my favorite lines in the whole series
It showed that Garp valued his job over his so called family that is why he sad nouthing because he new she was right. Gap failed to do anything however as Garp said to ace why didn't you become a marine like I told you too. That was said because Garp new that this day would come if his grandchildren CHOSE to be pirates, so both Ace and Luffy have Failed Garp. That is the complexity of their relationships. Sad isn't it.
What Shanks says probably means more both to Luffy, myself, and society as a whole is really important. "It's okay to cry, but you have to move on." If you've ever been told to bottle your emotions, don't. Let yourself feel them, but more importantly, try to find a way to bounce back and not drown in them
This Episode always makes me cry Dadan love ASL so much even she didn't show her, it feels like she like a mother to them and especially Ace treat Dadan all her wounds and injuries when they finished Bluejam Pirates but Dadan didn't do anything when Ace died and she know Luffy having a hard time when time comes this situation that's why it really hurts 💔.
Jinbe is the absolute GOAT. Oda once drew what the strawhats would look like at 40 and 60 years old, two versions of each actually, one where they keep following their dreams, the "good" path you could say, and the other if they stopped following their dreams, the "bad" path. If it weren't for Jinbe we definitely would have gotten bad path Luffy right here.
Something i literally just noticed is that when luffy is remembering his crew, everyone is wearing the same outfits that they were wearing on Sabaody on the day they were scattered. He's remembering them in the last things they were wearing, which is a nice touch but also sort of sad
throwing a wild guess out there, one piece will end with luffy and shanks having an all out war on the island where the one piece is, since they have that little promise between them
I watched this episode just now and started crying like a baby at the part with Luffy and Jimbe. Knew I had to see my man Heisuten react to this episode
