Gato was basically begging ace to ask for help if he would have asked for help if harp went over that would have instantly been the end for every marine there good or bad
Garp did what he thought was best, and you can argue it was wrong, but he gave his grandsons Freedom. As the hero of the Marines he almost certainly could’ve raised Luffy and Ace in a Maine base/island. He could’ve been there day and night guiding them to be marines, but he didn’t. He let them choose their own paths in life, and he is proud of them for it.
You could say the same for Dragon, even though we dont know their relationships back in the past, but now he is somewhat free to believe in his own ideology and built upon a new path along with his crew. We dont know if Garp did the samething for him as a kid, just like what he did for both Ace and Luffy, but I am rlly curious to see if Garp plans to go against the Navy in some meaningful way just like Dragon is rebelling and wanting to bring war to the Celestial Dragons
I am not sure I would agree that he would have been able to raise them at a marine base or island. Ace is the son of Gol D. Roger and they were more than willing to execute him this arc on that very fact alone. Luffy is the son of Monkey D. Dragon who is the currently worlds most wanted man. I think it goes without saying Garp wouldn't dare take a chance risking the lives of two innocent children because their fathers were criminals. The World Government even went out of their way to execute any pregnant women who came in contact with or had ties to Roger. No, I think he had to raise them there in the East Blue at Foosha Village, in the middle of nowhere, out of necessity and desire to keep them safe until they were old enough to become marines themselves.

@@3to4characters tbh, i only said the Navy cuz of Akainu and Kizaru ig..maybe Ryokugyu since they directly follow under the Governments orders and commit the actions, plus, its possible even if u rebel from within, u may still have to deal with an admiral or 2 and some Vice Admirals if necessary, depending on the treat lvls since theyre the Revolutionary Army, but im just assuming, which I why I said Navy alot. I can't help but feel that Garp wanted Ace and Luffy to join the Navy to help change it from the inside. It's too late for him, but maybe the next generation could pull it off. Kind of like what we're hoping Coby would eventually do.
And, yeah, Akainu absolutely murdered that Navy soldier in the name of justice. Probably saw him as a rebel and as a traitor.
He probably also gets blamed a lot for Dragon from those who know and certainly blames himself for it too. So he wanted to literally punch into his two grandkids that they have to become marines so that 1. what you said, 2. to kinda somewhat clear his name and 3. to not go through the same shit again that he went through with Dragon.
In my opinion, the more logical answer would be to not get them in trouble. As their father both are notorious, joining the Marines would "spare their life". Leading a normal life is out of the question.

Garp was pushing Ace and Luffy to become marines because they WERENT corrupt like most eventually become. They could have made a huge impact in his eyes I guess, considering who their parents are.
People tend to blame Garp for Ace but he is still a Marine Hero, if he decided to turn n save his grandsons right there, the pirates is 100% going to win this war,as awful as they are, some Marine are genuinely good people who save citizens, if the Marine crumbled right here its basically putting so many nations to ruin, between the world he swore to protect or the grandson he raised, he picked the world, there really is no right answer for the man, he suffer either way

Garp only wanted for ace to become a navy soldier so he wouldn't be killed. And also Luffy but ace expecially because he was the son of the Pirate king
Realistically, the Marines wouldn't crumble at all. Remember that the pirate's main objective is to rescue Ace. If Garp decided to turn against the Marines and save Ace, the pirates most likely would've retreated immediately. There's no reason to fight an entire war if you've already secured your objective.
The problem would be how the Marines would look afterwards if Garp did that. Many nations would become uncertain of the Marines capabilities. A hero of the entire Navy turned traitor? Nations across the world would question how reliable the Marines are if they allowed a traitor into their ranks, even labeling him as a hero!
Of course knowing how the World Government operates, they'll most likely cover up Garp's actions, come up with some excuse on why the pirates retreated so quickly, deny any suspicions, and will probably go back to normal.

We can't talk about the world government because they haven't seen nothing yet and are not involved on this war either.

It’s sad for Garp. He knew that no matter what Ace and Luffy would be condemned to death due to their “Fathers Sins”. To him the only way to save them is for them to be Marines.
Garp is a member of "D" clan who strongly believes in fate and dreams. He did what's best for both Ace and Luffy to not become a pirate. He knew that both Luffy and Ace knew the consequences of being a pirate. So I can't really blame him. Ace and Luffy didn't blame him either.
I think Garp was pushing for them to become marines because he was aware of their respective bloodlines, so he knew that if they became pirates they would be on the marine's radar and this whole situation would happen.

@@binkiebrew Garp has a ton of sway though, especially with higher ups like Sengoku whose morality is grey enough on its own. If Luffy and Ace were good marines (Which would definitely be the case) they would definitely overlook or cover up that fact. Just look at Garp himself, Sengoku has said that if it weren't for his accomplishments he wouldn't get away with half the stuff he says/does.

Garp chooses to side for all of the citizens of the world. He doesn’t side with the government. Garp is so strong he can do what he wants in the navy. Protect the good and try to fix the bad. That’s why he wanted Ace and Luffy to follow along side him. Even though both sides do wrong. One side doesn’t get punished for their wrongs. Garp wants his (family) to grow up and live a full life. He doesn’t want them to be hunted or seen as criminals bc he cares for them. Good reaction.

Oda wrote Doflamingo so perfectly by clearly showing us his powers multiple times and we still had no fucking clue how he was doing it, dude could float, fly, perfectly cut limbs off and control people.
What people knew and speculation was nearly perfect the first introduction of doflamingo in jaya this did nothing but add more to the crowded pile of the correct and only answer.

9:58 It's actually funny you point this out because I think it's an interesting point that hasn't really been addressed. It's never been stated what Garp's goals are. The very fact that he is a Marine and considered a Hero, no less, is in direct contrast of some of the actions he has taken. A few examples;
1) Monkey D. Dragon is his son and the leader of the revolutionary army. This doesn't really mean much of anything since we have little to no information about Garp and Dragon's relationship with eachother, but I do think it's a notable fact and something to keep an eye on in the future. Garp also holds family in high regard so I think it goes without saying, he probably cares deeply about his son too. There is just currently no evidence to support it, unfortunately, so it's merely an assumption based off things he has said so far.
2) Garp helped raise Luffy (Dadan and the mountain bandits were really the ones who raised him but you understand what I mean), Dragon's son and his own grandson in a remote area of the East Blue. For a dangerous criminal like Dragon, the marines would definitely want to know the location of his son so they could use him as a way to get to Dragon. Obviously, Garp would never let them do anything to him but i think it's noteworthy that he really pushed being a marine on Luffy despite knowing it would be serve the World Government which Garp has been shown to have a unique distaste for, and rightfully so.
3) Garp literally took in Ace per Roger's request and raise Ace like his own family. This is a testament to the bond he had with Roger and only further demonstrates the lengths Garp will go to to hide things from the government and marines if it means he can keep his family safe. This also speaks to the fact that despite being a marine, he also had enough respect for Roger to raise his son per his request.
4) Upon hearing Coby and Helmeppo were friends of Luffy, he brought them under his wing and still trains them to be powerful marines. I don't think the fact he heard they were friends of Luffy goes unnoticed by Garp here and it's entirely possible he has motives beyond his duty as a Marine Vice-admiral.
5) Garp refused a position as an Admiral despite being strong enough because he didn't want to be a guard dog to the Celetial Dragons. It's not at all shocking he doesn't like Celestial Dragons but I think his distaste for them is interesting given his son and grandson are clear enemies of them as well. Much like every person with the initial D in there name. Not a coincidence, I am pretty confident in saying.
In any case, there have been a handful of marines who are on the "Right side of Justice". Garp, Smoker, Tashigi, Coby, Helmeppo, and Aokiji being the most notable characters up until this point. They are characters to keep an eye on because of their unique stances within the Marines. There are a lot of things I had to refrain from saying as I do not want to spoil anyone but rest assured, there are a handful more reasons that really make Garp's position very interesting.
Yeah . I still want to know the meaning of "sword member" , and the ideology behind it.

Garp wanted them to be strong marines (like him). For me, that means that garp is aware about the corruption that the marine and goverment allows, but he knows that there are some marines that can make the difference

Idk if it was in this set of episodes or when oarz Jr first showed up. But a detail that has sparked many theories is the hint that oars Jr may actually be the third. So oars from thriller bark would actually be the child of an even bigger ancient giant.
My favorite theory involving it is that that oars was actually joyboy and going into any more detail would be spoiler territory
It may be possible that there is even bigger oars that lived in joyboy era........who knows maybe the onigashima is the first oars dead body

Fun fact: Akainu didn't commit even one crime during Marineford. All the marines that tried to run or stop the marines from fighting could be considered as traitors or deserters and all be executed according to military rules from many countries around the world. Even if we hate him as hell, Akainu remains a strict and yet a lawful marine.

I know other people have said this but I always saw Garp pushing the boys to be Navy soldiers because he had this hope that if they rose through the ranks of the Navy and became respected, no one would kill them when their fathers were revealed. I think it was a naïve hope because I could still see the Navy executing Ace because of Roger even if he was a soldier. And I could picture Luffy being potentially used as a bargaining chip against Dragon too. I feel so bad for Garp here because he's an honorable and loyal man and knows that there are good people in the Navy so he can’t just side with the pirates. But this is also his grandson, his baby, and he doesn't know what to do!

Yeah all 3 admirals have their own personal justice, Aokiji is Lazy, Kizaru is slow (I think), and Akainu is absolute meaning you never run from your enemy and do whatever is needed to destroy them even if it means taking out your own
Aokiji is Lazy, Kizaru is Unclear, and Akainu is Thorough. Absolute is just one of the main ones that many Marines follow and support. (e.g Sengoku's personal justice is Reigning Justice, but he also supported Absolute Justice.)
They technically are related in some way with the D clan

Yes, he knows WG does bad shit which is why he doesn't accept promotion to become an Admiral or Fleet Admiral. Both admirals and fleet admiral has to obey direct orders from WG. Vice-admiral gets orders from admirals or fleet admirals so has much more freedom. He values freedom like Luffy and has a strong sense of justice hence why he is in the marines.
They are related, in a way, remember Roger said to Garp that Ace's mom is womewhat related to you, I'm not gonna get into details.
