This training arc makes life feel good again (Haikyuu)

  • Hinata's Brazil arc is without doubt my favourite training arc of all time. Haikyuu is packed to the brim with inspiring stories, and this arc is perhaps the most moving of all. From the end of Karasuno vs Kamomedai, where Takeda told him "This is still Volleyball", to his graduation and then moving to Brazil to practice beach volleyball, Hinata went on a crazy journey, which we'll discuss today.
Hinata's trip to Brazil didnt start the way he hoped, his roommate ignored him, the sand took away his jumping power... and yet he continued on.
After a particularly awful day, where he had his wallet stolen he becomes overwhelmed by homesickness. But it's here he remembers Takeda's words, "He who would climb the ladder, must start at the bottom". Said to him during the ball boy arc, a reminder of his need to work his way up. But more importantly, to take care of himself. After collapsing halfway through the Kamomedai match, and being told by Hoshiumi to "play him again", he goes on a whole new path. One where he prioritises taking care of himself. Lifting weights, meditating, eating good food. All things we should do ourselves.
After meeting up with Oikawa, and playing matches of beach volleyball together, including the final of a tournament, Hinata heads home and joins the MSBY Black Jackacls, where they play the Schweiden Adlers, featuring Kageyama, Ushiwaka, Hoshiumi and more.
Hinata kicks off the match with a reverse tempo set with teammate Miya Atsumu, resulting in his iconic "I'm here"! line. And as the match continutes, "Ninja Shoyo" takes over the court. Being able to fight against a world-class ace like Romero, recieving even Ushiwaka's hate filled spike, and showing himself to be a secret setter. But most importantly, at the very end, he manages to beat Kageyama. Showing that everything that happened this whole time, was "Still volleyball".

When thinking of Haikyuu, despite it feeling like every major character is an essay of the beauty of humanity's flaws and strengths, somehow, every lesson, every theme, every journey, all comes back to Shoyo Hinata.

takeda is such a wonderful character. he always has these beautiful wisdom poems to give the players but it doesn't feel forced bc not only is he a japanese literature teacher, but that's also the kind of adult he is, one who's taken his life experience and used it to help others to grow. i love his role in hinata's development, and he has one of my favorite lines in the show-- he who climbs the ladder must begin at the bottom. as a person who went through teenage years & early adulthood as a hq fan, takeda has been one of the most impactful characters for me

"This is still Volleyball", I've always loved that line. Now thinking about it, it's so profound. It's become popular in our culture to romanticize passions. With quotes like "if you find something you love, you won't work a day in your life". But this blatantly ignores that more often than not, you'll need to do things that you won't like to do (at least at the start) while pursuing that passion, and those things, they're still volleyball (or whatever you're pursuing).
And this also relates, to the faith Hinata had while training in seemingly unrelated things. It's important to note, that Hinata did a lot of research/learning before he decides what he needs to do (and can have faith in). Once decided, he had faith that no matter what anyone else is doing, no matter how much he's struggling right now, he must keep doing it, as "This is still volleyball". Just masterful. I fucking love Haikyuu.

The Brazil arc is by far my favourite arc of the entire manga and, likewise, favourite training arc of all time. It's just so inspirational and emotional, I love that my two favourite charas of the series are there: Hinata and Oikawa. I loved seeing them playing together!! And the final match against Kageyama and co. was pure adrenaline, Hinata was superb and the story had a perfect ending!

the brazil arc is exactly the thesis of haikyuu; every little things hinata did in his traning and everyday activities accumulated to build the player he is. Takeda's speech to Hinata in the last game is also what sets apart and exceeded my other all-time favorite Sports anime - Slam Dunk; without spoiling the last game in Slam Dunk, I think Haikyuu is written for professional athletes which emphasizes everyday habits are as important as performance on the field; Slam Dunk encourages average teenagers to get up and do something with their lives and utilize every moment you have as youth to shine.

To me, Haikyu!! is the perfect blend of concepts.
It's enjoyable and entertaining, to the point you can shut your brain off and have a good time watching a few absolute goofballs playing a sport they like playing.
But it also features a ton of profound, sophisticated, and meaningful themes and lessons, to the point where you can genuinely find comfort, motivation and growth if you are looking for it.

I really like the quote of kageyama's grandpa "no one understands what is and is not important to you better than you do" when he was talking to his granddaughter about how she quit volleyball because she didn't want to cut her hair. It was seemingly silly reason at first glance but later we find out that she became a hairdresser possibly BECAUSE she took an interest in hair and taking care of it. So it really shows how things can change in the future and how some actions that could be Seen as questionable at the time, show their impact later in life. Great video, keep up the good work!

IDK if I would call it the best one for me personally, but I think it's absolutely up there in the top 3. I would probably have Slam Dunk at first place (that last match in Slam Dunk is probably the single greatest thing out of any sports manga/anime), and then Haikyuu and FMAB up there as well.

It genuinely has a strong case imho. It's profound, sophisticated, recontextualizes a lot of important things in the series and, beautifully ties together all the different story and- character plot lines and, most importantly, delivered absolutely incredible payoffs. Actually 10/10 ending arc.

I haven’t even watched the video yet but I appreciate u covering this arc ! If u r chasing ur dream , this arc shows u that it isn’t going to be sunshine and rainbows. There are going to be dark moments. But if u remember the people that have supported u on the journey and are consistently trying, evolving and adapting when pursuing ur dream, it will be worth it !! Wherever u end up , enjoy the journey and be open minded to try new things and never be ashamed to ask for help ! Truly my favourite arc. It’s not about the destination , it’s the journey !

I finished the manga TODAY, and I'm still very sensitive about it, but I had to come here to watch this video!! Firstly, as a Brazilian myself I'm honored to have THE Hinata Shoyo in my country! 🙇🏻‍♀️ But seriously this arc was just a delight to read. I was so proud of Hinata for (literally) going so far to learn in a whole new way how to become a better volleyball player. And seeing that boy that once was so eager and impulsive to be at the top, actually discipline himself and refine his skills made me so emotional. I really love this arc so much and the cherry on top was definitely Oikawa and their whole interaction and how that was beneficial for both of them. And i love how it all ties to the final match between BJ vs Adlers and it shows just how much our protagonist has grown, along with the rest of the characters we love so much! I'll be eagerly waiting for a video on this match, pls!! And thanks for another great video!!! 🤧🙏

The whole kamomedai, brazil arc and msby match always was a comfort for me! Its proof that what you do, decide and strive for will come to you. As always, as Kita says. We are built on what we do everyday, and our consistency, routine. It wont always be okay, Hinata knows it, I know it. Its really just securing yourself, that “you did the work, you’re doing it” its just sometimes. We just gotta take the knee, and get up fast. If that makes sense.. thanks for the video! Ive been binging your haikyu vids (podcast style) at work, its very lovely thank you

Man, I couldn’t say how happy am I to stumbled on your channel. Great stuff! I started playing volleyball for about four months already. And I have to say that it completely changed myself. The way I trained, eat, and rest. I always looked up to Hinata for his hardworking towards his goals. It has been such a hard time for me, especially when I did not reach my performing standards. But I know if I keep doing it, if I keep showing up to the court, doing practices, failed over again and again, I’ll definitely get better! You just don’t know what life will bring you when you’re feeling that you make zero progress or you didn’t make it anywhere, but you still choose to fight and not giving up no matter what.

Everything, no matter how happy or tragic, that you've experienced will be how you get to the future of your dreams.

And all of this is gonna be adapted 90 minutes compressed movie 😍🤡 no seriously, really good vid. This arc isn't my favourite, especially the adlers vs jackals match, because this end feels so rushed for me. I can fell like it was gonna be a more "tied" match in 5 sets but they didn't even made it to the tie break, even though it's the most important match of the manga, the conclusion. You could feel Furudate felt pressure from its editor (like almost every author) and the end feels a bit underwhelming (it's still great though, it's just that the match could have been 30 chapters instead of 20).
And btw fun fact : at the end of the manga after the timeskip, Hinata is the player with the *SECOND* highest combined skill score, with a total of 53 out of 60 (the first being Romero with 55, and the third Kageyama with 52). That doesn't necessarily make him better than everyone else of course (and if you really read Haikyu you understand that), since every player is different and you can't compare a hitter with a libero with a setter. But it's a kinda funny detail.
So I don't know if Hinata is the best player, but he undoubtedly is the one who improved the most, and the latest. It's kinda rare, in any high level sport, to become this good this late. Typical athletes you find at world stage are players like Kageyama who began playing when they were 2. Because it's so hard to develop your mind and body when you already hit puberty : you lack muscle memory, you lack spatial awareness, and most of all, experience, habit. It's like learning a language. It's always easier as a kid. As someone who started my sport late in life, this is the lesson from Haikyu I will remember the most. It's okay to start late. It's okay to struggle and it's okay to feel you don't belong. But you do, as long as you do everything you can to catch up. What Hinata did in middle school wasn't enough, and every time he lost, it made him realize what he lacked of and what he could do more. That's why volleyball is an individual sport as much as it is a team sport.
*cough*So please IG Prod, don't ruin my manga*cough*

I gotta disagree about the Adlers vs Jackals match being rushed, because the game finishing in 4 sets is the ONLY way it could have ended; because thats the only way Hinata could TRULY beat Kageyama. The manga pretty consistently goes on about how for those two, it's not really about just winning, it's that winning is how they get to play more and more volleyball. Simply playing the sport is kinda enough. Which is why Hinata's previous *losses* to Kageyama hurt so much; Kageyama got to play more volleyball than Hinata when he got subbed out for being sick, and his first match in middle school ended in only 2 sets instead of a full 3. The only way Hinata can get true revenge on Kageyama (like he promised he would) is to win in a way that stole volleyball from Kageyama. Hinata took away the chance to play the 5th set, so he wins. To me it's the perfect full circle moment of their rivalry.
And I'm still on the copium train of believing studio IG is gonna pull a fast one and make it so that the Kamomedai match is in fact the "last" haikyuu movie, but the Brazil and Adlers vs Jackals arc is gonna be told in a final season 5 of the series. That way (if there's a Brazil stinger at the end of the movie) anime only watchers can experience the pain of reading the manga, seeing the "a few years later" page of Hinata suddenly in Rio, and the tag line of Furudate going on break for research. They too must suffer as we have suffered.

Where are you getting 60 as the max points? Isn't it a 5-point scale with 6 abilities, so 30 points.
And based on the stats in the final match.
      Kageyama with 28/30
      Hinata and Romero with 27/30

@@DavidRodriguez-ot9yg sorry but I don't agree on the last match. Kageyama and Hinata's rivalry isn't just about how many more sets you got to play, and the match sure wasn't only about them. If Furudate wanted Hinata to "steal" game time from Kageyama, they would have ended the match at set 3. It already doesn't make that much sense, for me that the Adlers, the best team in V league for several seasons, with the literal "japan cannon", the little giant, the best setter in V-league and a fckn world class player who is even admired by his own teammates could only manage to win a set. I mean I get it that it was Hinata's time to shine, but you won't take away from me the fact that the last match was rushed, and that you can"t have the ultimate game, the one where all the protagonists are reunited, last no longer than 20 chapters, where shorter games like Inarizaki or Nekoma lasted for more than 30. And I'm far from being the only one with this feeling. The BJ beating the Adlers- okay, if you want, even if technically speaking that doesn't have that much sense but Hinata had to beat Kageyama so of course. But at least, make it 5 sets, so it's a little bit coherent, and don't make the last game of the manga, the most important one, last only 20 chapters. It's the same feeling you have when you expect watching a 2h long movie, and it only lasts 1h25 with a lot of scenes being cut off. When a match last only 2 sets, anywhere in the manga, you don't care because you know there is more to come after. But at the very end of the manga ?? You just feel like you've been robbed of of potential 10 more chapters, and a longer and deeper development on characters you're supposed not having seen for 4 years.
And concerning the "revenge" Hinata is supposed to have over Kageyama : when Kageyama beat Hinata in middle school : he didn't just beat him. They WIPED his team out, it wasn't just a loss, because the gap in skill between Hinata and Kageyama was so big that it couldn't be otherwise. So saying that the last match is a parallel with this middle school match, or the Kamomedai match where the reasons where totally different, is absurd. Because Hinata's team didn't wiped the Alders out (the way Kageyama destroyed Hinata's team at the beginning). If if you think they did, it's just illogical, because again it's the Alders we're talking about not just some random team with mid players. BESIDES : Hinata and Kageyama's rivalry is about who gets to play the longest. It was a friendly game, so no matter how many sets they would have played, they wouldn't have stopped the Adlers progression in the competition like Kitagawa's team did to HInata's team. The BJ won't play longer because they beat the Adlers in 4 sets. It wouldn't have changed anything, so why not just making it 5 sets ?? Especially since Hinata isn't outright better than Kageyama either.
Again I'm not blaming Furudate for this. They had to finish the manga before acertain time and they had pressure from their publisher. It's just a constatation. A lot of things were meant to be developed further, and were condensed with the 5 last chapters, where you could see the scores rushing. And seeing the scores rushing, when the manga is supposed to end in a few chapters, is very worrying. You can't fully enjoy the chapters because you know you may not see certain things you thought you would see. Again, same feeling than in the movie, where the score suddenly jumped from 4 to 18 points in the last set in a second.
It's just my personal feeling of course, no hate here.
