Visited last year and Hallstatt was as you say, very crowded. I was disappointed in the rudeness of the tourists visiting, however the locals we found were quite nice. Common courtesies go a long way. The city itself was quite charming. We managed to actually get much nicer pictures of the whole city with backdrop behind from across the lake and much less crowded. Overall, Austria is worth the visit. So many beautiful places to visit. We rented a car and it gave a lot of freedom to see it.
