What do you think would be mistake number 8?

That's an easy one: not planning enough time to visit Vienna.
Especially, if you are into history: Vienna covers around 2000 years of history, dating back to the Romans. I often hear that tourists are overwhelmed by the amount of sights, that ViennaI offers.
Also, if you by coincidence plan your trip on certain dates, you'll need some extra time to check out those special events, e.g..:
End of June, Vienna hosts one of Europe's biggest free open air festivals: Donauonselfest. Around Christmas time you have Christmas markets in almost every district, serving world famous Punsch. Around Easter time you'll have the respective Easter markets, although a smaller number. In summer you can enjoy lots of free swimming and sunbathing spots with open air bars. In winter time you can ice skate infront of the city hall or enjoy the Vienna thermal Spa, if you're feeling cold.

Just hanging around in the City Center. Vienna has a great "green belt" around the city. I highly recommend some hiking in the Wienerwald. Kahlenberg by Bus and then walk down in the city.

there are more than 8 mistakes..
      8. don't use a Fiaker. Those horse drawn carriages. no need to explain why, just check the local news and you will find out.
9.Don't bother with big nomination EUROS. Special the 500 Euro bills. If you still have some.
      10. Don't think jumping the controls at the entrances for the public transport. just DON'T!!!
Fines are heavy. But most of all, it will spoil your vacation.
11.Remember,Vienna and Austria is more than - Sound of Music -, Lederhosen and Dirndl.
12.if you are on a budget, don't bother to go to the Sacher Hotel for a coffee and cake. Rather go and eat, most of the time it is located in the basement, a - food court-. Local employees are going to eat there. so the food is good, a lot and fresh.AND not to expensive.
12.- Wine, women and song -. Than for sure don't schlepp out to grinzing. A rip off for tourists if there is one...
Regards from someone who knows Vienna...

Here's one I made: I didn't keep track of the closing time of the Schönbrunn and got locked on the grounds. I saw some people climbing the wall, which I also did. When I got to the top, I was afraid to climb down. There was a restaurant across the street with a ladder outside. I asked if they might move it to me so I could climb down. I was refused. Finally, a man climbed up the wall and guided my feet down.

The shoes tip is true for many cities in Europe. Always wear comfortable walking shoes.
And in most cities in Europe, public transport is easier and cheaper than hiring a car. I wouldn't consider driving into the centre of my local city of Leeds, let alone any of the larger cities.
My tip for Vienna would be that when you visit Schönbrunn, after you've done the tour, walk up the hill behind the palace. The views are fantastic.

well, if one wants to enjoy super nice skyline of Vienna without paying a single extra penny (besides the daily/weekly ticket), then one of my personal faves is taking a tram to the terminus at Nussdorf, then taking one of couple possible routes up to Kahlenberg - either by following the street or, when the weather is dry, you can do some challenging climb through the vineyards... either way, you get a view of the skyline that even the one you mentioned cant really compare, as you are getting near the very top of Vienna :D
Habsburgswarte at Hermannskogel is allegedly great too, as it sits atop the highest hill in Vienna, but that one is only open in good weather... which unfortunately I was unlucky for, since right when I got there it started raining massively... and me, an unaware fool, took the other way down... down one of the steepest descents in Vienna, 40% of slippery goodness at times... I nearly s*** myself in there... and once I got to the bottom, a sign saying "Steep incline" in German greeted me there :D I mean, really? such a sick sense of humor :D

Sounds like a rainy adventure that you will be able to tell your grandkids one day, Miroslaw. You mentioned Kahlenberg, which brings up a particular memory from 1971 when I was a student in Vienna. I remember walking up a wide and well traveled path up to Kahlenberg from the base where the bus left me off. I remember it being a weekend, sunny nice weather, and many many people were walking up that path to the Kahlenberg summit. There were even people with disabilities that I assumed might have been from WWII (but I have no idea). But I do remember thinking that the Austrians loved being outdoors in nature and enjoying their walks. Thanks for sharing your story, Miroslaw.

    • @RazielKainus
      @RazielKainus ปีที่แล้ว

@@johnmaryn4497 oh me and rain this year in Vienna lol... and my knack for choosing weird and a bit dangerous routes sometimes :D ... like one day when I walked on the side of the road from Neuwaldegg to Hutteldorf, simply cos it was the most direct route (and a preferred one since I wasnt particularly well equipped for possible mud in the forest through which the road cut)
or my epic journey from Neuwaldegg via Exelberg and pretty much following Tullner Strasse, which is a winding road that goes like... really upwards... and it kept creeping uphill until a short distance from Koenigstetten, when the forest opened, oooh man the view :))) ... then a loooong descent towards the small town and onwards to Tulln
which to my susprise had a fighter jet at the entry point to the town (surprising cos it is sometimes called Blumenstadt or Gartenstadt because of so many flowers/gardens everywhere) - but then, there is a nearby airfield and an Austrian army base near there, so maybe not that surprising :)
ok, got a bit carried away :) anyway, this year I got to know Vienna pretty well, every single "Bezirk", and now pretty much just trying new routes anywhere... now just to get a job and some accomodation later :D

I personally would not go off the normal paths because I would be afraid of getting lost. It is nice that you like to explore. Just don’t go down muddy paths in the middle of a forest. :-). Interestingly, I kept a paper journal of that special year in Vienna (my only journal). I’m glad that I did because it helps to remember what I did. If you are going on special travels - I don’t know, keep a paper journal and write some notes in it. Of course, with phones today, take plenty of photos. Besides Kahlenberg my only other experience in the Vienna Woods was hiking on some paths. However, I have no idea where I was on these paths. When I was in Vienna in 1971 (21 yrs old), I mostly studied in school and went to a lot of operas and concerts (standing room was affordable). All of this is why it was an amazing year. Keep a journal. Take photos. And good luck in finding a job and place to stay. I lived with an elderly hausfrau - sharing a room in her apartment - the school set it up. And it was so close to the Ringstrasse that I could go to those concerts. However, I’ve been told that today, living in those close districts today is very expensive and airBnbs are crazy expensive. I guess I was lucky. Best of luck to you.

@@MrWalter2202 I completely agree, but only if you tip with cash. In Austria, we don't have a well-established system for adding tips directly on the card terminal. So, if you round up the bill from 13.80 to 15.00 and pay with your card, the 1.20 difference is not directly considered as a tip. Instead, it becomes part of the restaurant's revenue. The transaction is only recognized as a tip if you explicitly select a tip amount on the card terminal. There is a reason why waiters in Austria appreciate tips in cash instead of card transactions.

Not so long ago, it wasn’t just Sundays! When I first came to Vienna, 22 years ago, Nothing was open on Sundays, other than bars, cafes and a couple of supermarkets at the Prater.Until about 15 years ago, supermarkets were closed at 6pm and on Saturday afternoons (except for the Prater and the airport, but the airport is a bit far to go for milk and bread!).
Much to many people’s horror, there is now talk of opening shops on Sunday! Even the non-religious appreciate the one day in the week when everything slows a bit. I used to live in Oxford, which has opened up on Sundays for the last 30 years or so, which has made Sundays one of the most crowded days in the city centre. Oxford has as many tourists as Vienna, but is 10% the size, but when you add lots of shoppers, it gets too much!
Don’t open on Sundays, Vienna, please!

Without cash dictatorship and complete police control is easier to implement. You should pay always with cash when you can. Please don’t say “people STILL prefer cash” this has nothing to do with technological developments. This will not be any different in 100 years given that local citizens keep on being smart. Is Favoriten a good city? Is it easy to get there from the airport?

Depends which part of Favoriten but it’s definitely well connected and has some amazing spots. Many people avoid staying close to reumannplatz as it’s slightly more „lively“ but also unique

Favoriten is the bronx of vienna at night. I would be careful.

Vienna: Where gray clouds add a touch of drama to the city's dazzling beauty! 😅
