My favorite thing about project diva games is making my own MV setups. The fact that even the most recent ports still mostly rely on PVs and outfits from decades ago, and that they won't just team up to include vocaloids from other companies is just sad.

i guess the logistical nightmare of having to manage like 3 or 5 vocaloid companies to all be in agreement would be too much even when the games were in their hayday

      @Aurora-P 2 ปีที่แล้ว +70

I mean at the end of they day, when you look at the cut most companies ask of individual artists for using their vocaloids- let ALONE established companies ? Project Diva's roster understandable
The Character Vocal Series (Miku/Rin/Len/Luka) and the Crypton Vocaloid Series (MEIKO/KAITO) are all already owned by Crypton,
Teto is really easy to get the rights to, and The VIPPERLOIDS are already so heavily owned by Crypton that only their designs really need licensing.
The only REAL other options for Guest Friends that are reasonable considering P-DIVA's current state are GUMI (While she is expensive, she already has a rich, friendly history with Crypton and SEGA and would easily rake in return-on-investment), and the duo of Azuki and Matcha (who are both fully developed and owned by SEGA themselves).
Most other vocaloids aren't really worth giving other companies the cut, as their presence wouldn't garner as much attention as the already-starring cast or GUMI.

as someone who was too young to experience vocaloid in its golden age, these types of videos make me so sad that I didn’t know vocaloid sooner, that I couldn’t really be apart of that hype
but now that I’m here in the fandom, I’m trying to catch up, and even though I know it is a shell of what project diva stands for. I am trying to save up for mega mix on the switch, because I want to feel a sliver of what it was like back then
my first glimpse of this was with project sekai, even though it is still pretty young. it made me feel even more excited to listen to vocaloid and be apart of this fandom
being able to see the song list, and reconise at lot of them, makes me feel great, and like I’m actually apart of this community. maybe I’ll regret it in the future, but I’m excited to at least be able to say I’ve played one of these games, especially on a console i have.

This video isn't what I expected, yet I ended up being sadder about it. Seeing a franchise so dear to me, going from being a lowkey love letter for Vocaloid and it's community, to a former shell of itself with little to not heart behind it (and even then I can't entirely blame them for everything, because life happens).
And I know you didn't go into depth with Project SEKAI, but for me it can and will never replace DIVA and the effect it had on me. It's a soild game, but I think it's pros are not enough for me to ignore it's cons.
All I'll say is, huge respect to all the modders out there that are trying their dammest best to keep this franchise alive, even if SEGA not only doesn't heed them but also prevents them from doing so.

Sekai isn’t a bad game by any means, but it’s just really upsetting to see Sekai players get new songs and events pretty often, whilst Diva is pretty much only being kept alive by modders. I would absolutely love a new release in the original style, or even just 60fps rereleases of F, F2nd, and X. But instead, Sega spends their time on Sekai because it’s just more profitable.

I get that people are complaining that Sekai is killing Diva but the way i see it, i see it kinda like FGO and Type/Moon situation where FGO (a gacha game like Sekai) grow SO big that people say it 'kill' other Type/Moon franchise but in truth, FGO gacha money FUND the other games in Type/Moon (ex Tsukihime Remake).

Except, this is nonsense. Sega is a business and their business is making money. They aren't going to be investing into projects that are less profitable. They are going to double down on what's making them the most cash possible. So, the only possible future for Project DIVA would have been had Project Sekai flopped. Unfortunately, it's bloody mobile game packed full of predatory micropayments, where things don't even have to be good to make money, they just need to exploit how people's brains work to make money. So while I hope we get some genuinely good Project DIVA games (or, at least, get Denuvo removed from MegaMix+)...well, I wouldn't hold my breath.

I'm SO glad you talked at length about the MVs. I remember starting to tap out from Project Diva after X because of that exact thing. I know a lot of people say that things like MVs that don't matter in the long run (and, tbh, I understand some producers requesting their original PVs to be imported to give recognition to the animators/artists/editors that created them like with Jitterbug from what I heard) but to me it was a sure sign of a lack of effort. The MVs in mirai, F & F2nd and in Dreamy Theater were extremely fun and I liked them not just because "hey, I get a funny sparkly video to watch while I play the song" but also because I LOVED seeing the devs' interpretations of songs and the how they handled them, especially in songs that didn't even HAVE a story in the first place (i.e. Remote Control (Rin and Len were overflowing with personality in that one), World's End Dancehall as mentioned, Nega*Posi Continues, Denparadigm). And even WITH songs with stories, they did their own spins on them, like Miku watching WORLD'S END UMBRELLA in the theater, Miku and Rin's conflict-turned-friendship in Doubleganger or the clever toning-down yet still tangible deaths in Kagerou Daze. Black Rock Shooter's PV is my favorite for this reason, the beginning with Miku walking along the beam overlooking the city while flashes of her and the other 'loids pass by gets me so pumped up every time. Like, they didn't have to do that! It showed the extra care and work they put in! So when they took it away despite the engine being able to support FAR better graphics than the original titles, I started to feel like something dark was on the horizon.
I'm a MAJOR fan of Project SEKAI, and I think they've done a really good job with it thus far. I love the original characters and the stories are very good. But I do wish that Project Diva had lasted, or had a new yet similar game to take its place, as I feel there's a lot of things that DIVA did right that Proseka will never be able to do due to its status as a mobile title and its predominant focus on the oc generation. Even more so, since SEKAI has proved it IS in fact possible to have a VOCALOID rhythm game with more than just the Crypton/piapro characters (songwise, anyway). If we could have a game with SEKAI's songlist, mirai's gameplay and DIVA/mirai's PVs and features, plus inclusion of other VOCALOID characters, I think we'd be set for life.

I'd love for Project DIVA to have Sekai's song list with the original vocals! Granted, Sega and Crypton would have to pull some strings to have the characters be part of the game (like flower, IA, and Yuzuki Yukari), but then again, they added GUMI to Project Mirai, so nothing is impossible.

project DIVA is literally the thing that got me into VOCALOID in elementary school, and VOCALOID has stuck with me for all those years, so i owe it to SEGA in a way…
so it’s really sad to see something that once meant so much slowly degrade in quality and meaning 🥲 it’s like they don’t care anymore, they didn’t even make modules for alien alien and hibana 🥲
i LOVE colorful stage but i feel like it gives a completely different vibe from DIVA… i can appreciate the fan contests for costumes and songs but it just doesnt feel the same… the focus is less on the songs and producers and more on the guys who sing and relate to them WHICH IS TOTALLY FINE… but that fun sense of adaptation that MVs like envy cat walk and rolling girl had in DIVA are completely lost with gacha games that focus on “miku fans” rather than “miku” herself…
every time i open DIVA and have fun watching a pretty MV or making a cute module i can only hope that SEGA remembers what made DIVA so loveable 🥹

My first introduction to Vocaloid was when i got the PV from Romeo and Cinderella on my TH-cam recommendations. It was about 7 years ago, and I was close to 11. I was dazzled by everything there. From the music, to the stage, the idea of a virtual singer, the changing clothes (didn't know about modules back then), lastly, the song itself, it still is my top 1 of all time when it comes to vocaloid. I was so entranced by Miku i even made a powerpoint presentation for my IT class at the time, for which i got a lot of weird looks from the teacher. It was YEARS before i rediscovered the genere, learning about the other well known creators such as Wowaka, Ryo, Deco*27, Cosmo, Kurousa, Mitche M, 40mp and the others, got my love rekindled for the 3rd almost sindle handedly by Otetsu. I even brought a cracked PSP and stole the ROM's since i couldn't get the original discs. All for it to come to PDMM and now happily playing on the PC. I'm still a new player and I have a lot of hope for at least some more official songs, but i suppose it's not really propable now.

It’s been very sad seeing this decline happen. I think it was really solidified with Project Sekai, and MegaMix+.
It’s been extremely long since an original project diva game came out that wasn’t just a diva port. I think megamix was a test of the waters, but was killed by the extremely high price tags on dlc. I’m unsure how to feel about MegaMix+, I’m torn between it being a interest gauge before they make a final decision on the fate of the series, or just a way to get the very last of money project diva has left to milk.
I feel like a big fumble on SEGA’s part was making an arcade game in the first place. Most people in the fandom ( including myself ), prefer the games before arcade for the personality they had. Tons of features that were impossible to add to an arcade game, and SEGA never bothered implementing in the console ports. Chart creation and Vocaloid interactions were the main parts I missed. They added so much charm and personality into the game and added a lot of value to me.
I also feel like the graphics and chance times had less effort put into them. Small touches like Len’s hair swaying in the Paradichlorobenzene intro card added a nice touch, and if I’m not mistaken some chance times were literally removed from Project Diva ( Clover Club? ). I also just personally prefer the older graphics but thats personal taste.
Project Diva X was ( although lacking in content ), a breath of fresh air. The storyline although lacking was cute, song selection was amazing ( although again, lacking ), the Clouds were a cute idea, I loved the modules, concerts and medleys were great for replayability, and they bought back Vocaloid interactions ( although more limited than F/F2nd ).
Project Diva X gave me hope that SEGA still genuinely had care for the series, as I could see a lot of love and care put into that game. However, they never reached that level again. After Project Diva X we were limited to just regular Arcade.
I’m not trying to say that Arcade is bad, or that “Arcade Killed The Series” ( I love arcade, it has merit ), but in my opinion it was instrumental in Project Diva’s downfall. They got rid of half of the features, and then patched it up with more songs and sliders.
Another reason that I mentioned was Project Sekai. I feel like Project Diva’s era has passed in a way. The current market is mainly Mobile Rhythm games or Rhythm games with a gimmick. Project Sekai took a modern spin on a vocaloid game and it clearly worked. A lot of this comes down to marketing & exposure in my opinion. Adding original characters was genius, as people who came for recognizable vocaloids will get attached and start to be fans of characters, ( thus memes, social media posts, ect ). Another thing that really helped Project Sekai was that it wasn’t limited to cryptonloids exclusively. Sure, mainly, but even a few extra options opens up so many good songs.
I’m glad that community efforts are keeping its legacy alive.
tldr sega fumbled projectdiva until it was too late and its era was over. if you read this mismatched rant i thank you for your time

im seeing a lot of distaste for project sekai in the comments which to some degree i understand. i became a vocaloid fan in 2012 and played the project diva games long before sekai came out. project sekai is very different and treats the vocaloids as something malleable. but as a long time fan, thats something i like about it. project sekai feels like its reflecting the ways producers have interpreted the vocaloids with personalities and identities before. and in the case of the original non-vocaloid characters, their stories reflect the way music can be a respite or for self expression. one of the main stories centers around the way vocaloid music can help with depression and expressing emotions that are otherwise really difficult to put into words. thats something ive often felt and why i love producers like wowoka, kairiki bear, and many others.
that said, it is also a shame to see the stagnation that the project diva series has undergone. sekai to me is so fundamentally different from diva as a rhythm game. tapping music to beats may be the core of both games, but the interface and difference in controls makes for a wildly different experience. sekai cant replace diva even if its trying to. i really hope sega reconsiders the model for the project diva games and tries to create a series that builds on rather than takes from what came before. itd also be great to see dlc used to its full potential. despite dlc being used throughout the series, it tends towards just adding old songs again rather than bringing in fresh, recent songs. and old songs are important but in terms of growing divas popularity, new songs would also help bring in new fans.

It would be really interesting to see Project Diva go the route of Clone Hero where fans just make an open-source version of the game that supports existing maps and just port and/or make their own maps with MMD and a map editor. May never have the polish of the original games, but it would still open up the door for fans to make their own challenges or even silly meme maps that get people interested in the game. Could even lead to people getting creative with models/dances/tracks that have nothing to do with vocaloid.

That was a really instructive but also a really sad video. It really sucks to see a franchise you love decline that way and even if Project Sekai picked up the fan content contests, things like the editor, the cinematic mv and the full songs are now a thing of the past and that's a shame.
I do think that Diva being also very much a product of its time didn't help at all too: rythm games now are thriving more on mobile than on consoles and arcade, Diva's is reluctant to add new tracks (something mentioned in the video) and thus ages more and more over time, and finally Diva's "vocaloids are the stars" approach is now less common than sekai's "vocaloids support OC stories and the carreer of new musicians" approach (at least that's the impression I got).
The last point especially means that Diva fans resent Sekai ten folds because it alienates them, while Sekai fans often don't understand the importance of Diva and why people like it so much, leading to conflicts and that's a shame really.
I love Sekai a lot. I like the gameplay better than Diva, it has a song selection that speaks more to me, I love the human character and their stories and beyond the money grabbing, that game do feel like a love letter to vocaloid music. But I still wish for Project Diva to thrive, and if Sega drops the ball, I hope fans keep having fun with their own mods and freeware equivalents.

@@whiteasparagus4331 Same. The game experience is different so I don't feel Sekai can ever replace Diva, but the feeling that it does is probably making Diva fans extra bitter. The renewed interest in Vocaloid in general could hopefully push them to make a new Diva game with a more modern track list but since Sekai is more in tune with the current market and makes them buttloads of money, I doubt it. I think the best hope for Diva might be to go the Osu/Clone Hero route: if Sega does not step up, fans are gonna do it themselves.

The reason the songs do not get ported over is due to licence agreements for the songs. Most of the time, a song is signed for a set amount of title release/s or sega has signed agreement to be able to use the song for all titles. Each licence agreement for a song is very expensive. The DLC cost is due to the licence fee they have to pay to even put the song in the game. Much less due to sega just not wanting to put songs in the game and overcharging the fanbase for money. They are not the solo owner of Hatsune Miku/Vocaloid. They have to pay song writers for the song's use. If they were to put all songs in the base game without the use of DLC. The base game's price would be insane due to the licence agreements. Other points in the video do stand though

I mean, I only downloaded sekai FOR the Vocaloids. And it's really awesome that it does include songs sung by NON-Crypton Vocaloids. Like Lower Ones Eyes by VFlower. And its also cool that they pay people to make covers of certain songs with other Vocaloids, like when Len got to sing Doctor Funk Beat. But it feels like the Vocaloids really take a backseat to these human singers. Which, I get it, it makes sense, the humans are real people getting paid for doing their job and singing these songs and voicing these characters, and the more work they get the better for them. But I seriously miss Project Diva F, F2nd and X. I didn't even care about the fact that the games came out so close together and were always really similar. I was fine with that, they could keep the playstyle that way forever and I'd be fine with it and keep buying them. I have both the Japanese copy of F2nd and the English one and completed both. I have all the PSP games. I have all the 3DS ones, heck, I even bought a Japanese 3DS so I could play the Japanese Mirai game. All the PS3 ones as I said already. I have Future Tone on my PS4 and Megamix on my Switch. I even bought an arcade style controller for the switch for the game. I am loyal to this franchise until the grave. Vocaloid is EXTREMELY important to me, and the games are as well. So it hurts how little attention and care has been directed toward it recently.

this might sound cheesy, but project diva's mvs helped me find my calling. as a kid, i would watch them all the time and i was obsessed with any that had a story or broke the mold of taking place on a boring stage. i began to fall in love with the connection of sound to visuals, regardless of if the subject matter really made sense with the song. because of these games, i learned that what i really wanted to do in life was become a creative director/storyboard artist for other rhythm games like project diva. every time i'd watch an mv, i'd feel like i was being sucked into another world, and that's a feeling i want to be able to give myself and others with my work. without project diva i wouldn't have been able to realize what i loved, or at the very least, i wouldn't have been able to experience it. it helped me discover vocaloid (though i'm sure i would have found it anyway, i don't know if i can confidently say i'd be as pulled in as i was without the mvs), and that's been the number one factor that's stayed constant in my day to day for my whole life since then.
so you can imagine how someone like me felt when seeing the game revert to bland, uninspired mvs... i was sort of crestfallen. there are so many good ideas out there to come to fruition, but instead, every thing was just... boring. mvs where the creator had an idea and a passion help breathe new life into music. without it, i started to fall off of the series. PLUS THE GAMES WERE JUST GETTING TOO PRICEY
but i could go on for hours about project diva mvs and how much they mean to me. the first game i got was mirai dx, and i think a lot of the mvs in there will always be my favorites. KOKORO. THE MV FOR KOKORO GIVES ME CHILLS. especially with the 3d effects on... call me cringe, but it was BREATHTAKING.
i am project diva mv lover number one ANY OTHER PROJECT DIVA MV LOVERS PLEASE CONTACT ME /hj
and don't get me wrong, i adore project sekai. the gameplay is fun, the writing is great, and the characters are captivating. i love having a vocaloid rhythm game at my fingertips without having to spend a fortune (COUGH COUGH), and the songs in it are ALL FANTASTIC. the way the game commissions songs is super fun too and i love getting to see my favorite producers featured. but... god. those 3d models are CRUSTY AS ALL HELL... the mvs are so bare minimum with a few that i do actually like (ego rock's is really good imo! it reminds me a lot of two sided lovers in project diva). the features are nice, but lord it doesn't look great. another game, ensemble stars, has really good 3d models, even if their mvs aren't as dynamic at times (but on average, i think the camera work is WAY better (and camera work is one of the most important aspects to making interesting mvs imo), and in the newer songs they do a great job at implementing new locations during the mvs because they have really big stages with a lot of variety).
also you are literally the best. being a vocaloid nerd and finding a vocaloid video essayist feels like HEAVEN, 'cus it's like finding a person who completely understands everything you love... it's like... FINALLY SOMEONE WHO GETS IT!! keep making content because you slay so hard

I'm a die-hard PSP2nd# fan. Cantarella was the first mv I saw on youtube and it got me to import my first Diva game (PSP2nd#). The whole thing was just such a delight. And not only that, I love how the characters were ALWAYS on the menu with you during song choices and module choices, like they were a pocket pet or something. And I love the emotion system too. Use them more and win a lot and they become happy. Lose and not use them and they get sad and angry. Haku, Neru, and Sakine Meiko weren't dlc either and were included and had unique menu animations in conjunction with the emotion system. The game had difficulty spikes and was mostly fair until Gekishou came up, but it was all around solid and I can easily go back to it tomorrow.
Something I didn't notice when i first got the game were the SEGA references to other IPs until much later and I find using these modules much more fun than before, especially with the head swapping FT provides. However, I dont see the SEGA IP module references like that anymore. Space Channel 39 and EoE/RoF Rin were my favorites of this bunch.
Also, remember when Grumpy Waltz was on PSPDiva1
That game CHUGGED HARD but it was one of the most cinematic MVs I have seen for that game's age? The amount of ambition in it, even the game itself despite having a big number of 2D image stages. I forgive it as it was the first game, but would never forgive it if it was pulled in a modern day title unless it was an alternate choice.
I was super disappointed that Dramaturgy didn't get a 3D mv. They give songs in the game choices to be the original mv or the 3D mv. Hilariously enough, you can choose between Electric Angel's PSPDiva1 and PDExtend versions of the 3D mv. Yet for the new songs we got for Mega39s, nothing. And they're mostly all Miku minus Roki which you couldn't even change the modules for so it was still a 2D mv more or less, ESPECIALLY for the ones where it had other vocaloids featured. I'm also disappointed by PDX but that's another whole subject with more grievances that at first i was angry, then I had forgiven, but now feel soured by once more.
ALSO TO ADD CAN WE TALK ABOUT HOW NO LOGIC'S FUTURE TONE VERSION WAS BUTCHERED BY HOW THE SONG WAS CUT. YOU GET SKELETON ORCHESTRA AND LILIA KEPT BUT NOT NO LOGIC AND IT HURTS BECAUSE I DO NOT WANT TO GO BACK TO MIRAI'S GAMEPLAY. I wish Do-Re-Mi-Fa-Rondo was playable something better but the shiryoku kensa Gumi cameo would have been a no-no
I'm still torn if i should buy Project Diva FT/39s mega version on PC. It would save me the trouble of booting up my ps4 to play, but with how the series has been treated the last few years i feel a bit burned out. There is modding but I don't want to do extensive mod work. I don't want to emulate the games either, as I want to buy these games again in their original vanilla states. I would love nothing more than a rerelease port of the original PSP trilogy but be able to play the songs on a master list with all modules. Same for the F series. Only issue with PSP would be the first game. I think I remember in 3D model ripping circles mention that their models are higher poly supposedly, so then they had to alter them, with these ones possibly being used in the Ashes to Ashes moving doll montage. This was years ago so for all I know it could be false and not be an issue.

Be it Sonic or Miku, it seems Sega has been losing their touch with fans more and more as years go by, as a kid/teen i didn't have the money to buy the Project Diva games and would mostly just listen to the songs and watch the AMVs on TH-cam so even if i know it's not the best i could get, MegaMix is the first version of PD i could buy on an accessible console i love, still it's really frustrating to know a lot of songs i enjoy are locked behind VERY expensive paywalls. Sega is losing their passion for the gaming market and other than the obligatory Yakusa games I'm sure they're required to make, series like Sonic, PD, Monkey Ball, Bayonetta, hell even Persona are on a slow decline into becoming soulless cashgrabs, it's sad to see a company with many franchises i love falling apart in such a scummy way, let's hope for a miracle and that they don't end up like Konami

I was so happy to finally be able to play now that it’s on PC, but I definitely see where you’re coming from. I also play Project Sekai, and you can tell that there is a lot more love put into it by the devs with how well it’s handling it’s story and all the 2d and 3d MVs coming out for it. It’s almost a shame it’s a mobile game though, cause you can tell they have to cut corners on the 3d MVs and even then my phone still cooks my hands after a few minutes of continuous play

Even though it's been overshadowed by Project Sekai, I feel like Project DIVA is and should be worth bringing back if SEGA did maybe five things:
    1. Keep the game similar to the concept of Vocaloid like they did before, have everything up to interpretation with fan and creator alike. No story mode or different story modes.
    2. Have the community involved like last time. If people were able to post their ideas for modules and loading screens on Pixiv and Piapro back in the day for SEGA to notice, keep it going. Same would apply to the Edit PV contests back in the day. Community involvement was what made the first 3 games what they were, in my opinion.
    3. Someone has said it before and I agree with them. Get permission from other companies and use more voicebanks (not just GUMI). People use other voicebanks with Crypton loids all the time and Project DIVA can be used as a means of introducing people to other vocal synths, rather than just looking at Vocaloid Wiki, TH-cam, or NicoNico. Like, get permission to use the songs and likenesses of Gakupo, Lily, IA, flower, Utatane Piko, VY1 and VY2, Zola Project, Otomachi Una, Oliver, Ruby, Yohioloid, Sweet ANN, Big AL, Prima and Tonio, the loids from AHS. Heck, while they're at it, Crypton and SEGA should recognize more derivatives such as the genderbend versions of some Crypton loids, such as, but not limited to, KAIKO, MEITO, Hatsune Mikuo, Kagamine Rinto & Lenka, and Megurine Luki. Maybe even add derivative characters like Zatsune Miku or Juon Kiku, since other Miku derivatives like Hachune, Caine Ca, Mikudayo, and Shiteyann'yo are included with Haku and Neru. Lastly, get permission to use the likenesses and voicebanks of newer vocal synths such as maybe Eleanor Forte, Rikka Koharu, Maki Tsurumaki, and KAFU, since they've been becoming popular in the past five or so years. Turn the series into the Super Smash Bros Ultimate or Mugen of rhythm games. Have the fans do what they do best with them and have them create modules and songs for them.
    4. Give Kagamine Rin her flowers and make PVs of all of her DLC songs from DIVA 1. She was robbed of five songs with new, fabulously remade PVs that could have happened, but didn't and I'm still salty about it! I mean, the songs are somewhat outdated now unless you've been a day 1 Kagamine fan, but it's not too late to breathe new life into these songs and introduce them to a new audience.
    5. An awareness of older songs. Yes, companies like SEGA are basically using what's popular in the moment, but there are loads of older songs from other vocal synths that aren't Miku that need love and recognition. Like I said with the Rin songs, they might be outdated, but they can be given new life to new audiences if they were introduced to them through the game.
SEGA just needs to see that there are people that still love the series and want to see it keep going or have a new creative director for the series who wants to see it thrive and continue.

So a lot of these mechanics were repurposed to make project sekai, and since that’s the game that’s making sega and Crypton money now it’s taken Diva’s place as the main “vocaloid” game (even though the vocaloids are pushed back for the original characters instead of being the main focus)

As a big fan of the franchise, I really hope they end up making a new game sometime, it’s honestly been so sad seeing it decline, I was so excited that the arcade mvs from dx were so beautiful, and then they just… stopped making them, the fact that glow will probably never get an arcade pv saddens me.

This is a great video, really articulates well a lot of the issues with Project Diva that I had noticed as well, even as someone who hasn't played nearly as much or for as long as you have.
I can't emphasize how much the complete removal of all the non-rhythm game elements, the little social sim stuff, and a lot of other little details, really hurt the charm and character of the series compared to the older games. There's a bunch of little things that maybe don't matter much individually but added up to make the series just feel more playful in general than it is now. Like how new songs now often omit missed vocals option or multiple singer options, or how they removed the characters saying and celebrating the rating at the end screen, or how the old main menus had actual models of your characters instead of just static images... the experience now feels a lot more clinical and sterile, like a barebones vehicle to deliver the Project Diva gameplay instead of a true celebration of Vocaloid fandom and Vocaloid culture. And luckily the gameplay that it does deliver is still as fun and good and timeless as ever, but instead of being in an overall package that created a feeling that these characters were really performing these songs in Miku's world, it just feels like the bare minimum to get the gameplay on new platforms.
And you're right, it's really hard to not recommend playing them still when the core gameplay is still fun and the problems require this sort of nuanced critique, but it's a shame that it doesn't feel like the series is where it could/should be.

I don't comment often, but I wanted to say that this video is such a beautiful testament to the Diva games and what's become of Vocaloid in general. As someone who came from the same generation, watching videos and revolving my adolescent years to the older games, it crushes me. Now in uni and much older, I revisit the games and have really warmed up to sekai. But sekai is not a Diva game, sekai is a rhthym and gacha game with vocaloids in it. I've been into rhythm games forever and nothing has ever come close to the eternal love I have for the Diva games. I know this comment is one in hundreds that feel the same; but I'd never wanted to wholeheartedly thank someone on TH-cam so much for such a phenomenal, and heartbreaking video.

A huge reason I love the project diva series is the music videos and modules. I loved collecting the modules by doing challenges and getting achievements. This gave you incentive to play the game. That being said, I think that there hasn't been a good project diva game since F2nd. The music videos are filled with so much detail, have great coreo, and maybe even tell a cool story. I miss them so much. Not to mention F2nd had the edit mode which allowed for even more creativity. I personally believe that a good way to bring back the series would to be to release a game that mixes the elements of F2nd and Future done. Have there be 30-40 brand new songs with new music videos and new modules. Have there be challenges to unlock modules and maybe even to unlock songs. Keep the old songs and have them be unlockable through challenges too maybe. And most importantly, keep the edit mode because this will allow the game to continuously get new content.

im gonna be honest, i dont like project sekai that much. i played it before and it was nice, but i feel like some things have changed. i saw the romeo and cinderella mv and the only thing i was sad about is that they removed the iconic hip move. romeo and cinderella was my favorite song ever since i was a kid and i would always dance with miku whenever i see that mv. and you can sometimes tell that they dont care about the vocaloids that much anymore by hearing the awful tuning in some songs. and i also feel like theyre making new fans get mixed up by adding human characters. ive seen project sekai players get confused and say "emu otori is my favorite vocaloid!" or "hatsune miku existed since 2020 (the year release of project sekai)" and when i see anything similar my heart slowly shatters into pieces.

Confession time, i love project diva. Even tho i never play it since i don't have money to spend on the console so my love for them was just from watching MV and watching ppl playing extreme difficulty on YT, it's my first gate into vocaloid back in middle school. i saw many comment being too harsh on SEKAI and kinda sadden me.i agree that the SEKAI fandom is super toxic,i agree that sega shifted focus to SEKAI while lefting DIVA in a dusty shelf. i agree that pd have a much better MV than SEKAI ever did and will not ever a replaceable for DIVA. But on a plus side, regarding if you guys hate it or not. It bring back some of the producers to make music again. All the song are available without spending real money and get updated very often. At least for me, it help for new people to make the vocaloid more... accessable?.
The sad reality is the vocaloid scene changed a lot. And for me, regardless of of you hate it or not, sega make SEKAI is a reasonable choice. They need to adapt

Growing up I always wanted to play project diva, but because I only had Nintendo consoles and couldn’t import stuff, The only games I’ve played are mirai deluxe and megamix. And honestly the name of megamix alone was ringing alarm bells for me.
My favourite rhythm game franchise is rhythm heaven (/paradise/tengoku) which I have come to terms with the fact it is dead. It released a game called megamix brining back a bunch of the old content and adding very few new stuff while also leaving many old songs abandoned. The similarities are striking and because of consequences around the director I don’t think that game will ever see another entry as much as it pains me.
I would love to see project diva’s return but I know that I probably never will, which is absolutely heartbreaking as a fan who got in late. I’m going to continue playing the switch version, just like I continue playing the last rhythm heaven game, sad this is where it’s probably ended but happy I got to play it at all.

It honestly makes me really sad to think that the glory days of Project DIVA were already long behind me by the time I came to join this community. Future Tone was responsible for a lot of my early interest in vocaloid, but now, over two years after I first started playing the game, I hardly see myself coming back to it. I really enjoyed the game and all the time I spent with it, but it only TRULY succeeded at getting me to LOVE the music it highlighted, not the game itself. You and I are both fans that came from competely differently eras of vocaloid, and I think it's a shame that newer fans like myself never had a Project DIVA like you did way back when. As much as I love Project Sekai or even Future Tone and Mega Mix for simply being fun, I have to admit that they just don't OVERFLOW with a love and passion for the music they're centered around. That passion still lives with fans both new and old, but there's just something really sad about how the big, mainstream, official Miku games just don't represent that love anymore. I'm at least grateful that since the community has become even bigger and more connected than ever, people like you are able to keep that love and passion for vocaloid alive, even when SEGA can't. Thank you as always for another fantastic video, Ubnub!

I remember in the past, me and my brother would watch the upcoming song list (like way back pre-F release). Then when they introduced the revamped chance time, we'd always want to see what happens next, or how different it would be compared to the original MV we saw since pjd1-extend. one of my favorite editted MVs were the uraomote lovers and kagerou daze.
When X was released, I was kinda sad about the removal of the "new video" but changed to an outfit transition, but just lived with it. That said, when megamix came in, it just really felt like a port considering the songs have different mechanics. some songs that were first released on the pjd1-extend, but have a F/F2nd counter part, never got the new vid, unlike ones that were first released on F/F2nd. take for example Ai kotoba which had its first appearance on 2nd (also had a dlc on F2nd) compared to, say, What do you mean, that first appeared on F. That said, I'm also glad the modding community decided to bring back the F/F2nd counter part videos instead

As someone whose first Project Diva game was MegaMix, it makes me really sad that the franchise is already dying. I finally had a console to play Project Diva on, only to get bored because there was only 101 songs, not having the money to buy all the DLCs. Plus even if I did have a PS4 or whatever, Miku is literally older than me so I didn't even know what Vocaloid was until around 2019.
Making a game for Switch made it more accessible, but on mobile too? They probably knew Project Sekai would blow up globally, which is good for the company, but opening up a game franchise to everyone isn't always a good thing for long-time fans. It's fun having people to talk to in that community, but when the community becomes kids on TikTok etc., it can be less enjoyable. As someone who's had a massive Vocaloid obsession since I found out about it, that's partly why I quit Project Sekai anyway, idk how others feel about it.
Not saying that old fans are necessarily leaving, but this new, highly accessible game has opened up Vocaloid to so many people, it's going to be different forever. New fans naturally won't be that interested in Project Diva because they have Project Sekai which gets updated frequently, is portable and has more characters.

My first run in with this series was the Demo for F on the ps3. I loved it! It was the game series that made me realize that I enjoyed rythm games and that I was actually good at them! (Not by any sort of youtuber standard, I still only play on hard in Future Tone but I'm content with that ^^)
F2nd was such an improvement on F, more new songs!! Better maps!! Cooler additions to the MVs!! Amazing!
And then I got Mirai DX for my 3DS and I loved that game too!
Different gameplay, but I loved that the songs weren't cut down and I loved that more people could sing the songs!! Oh and the customization of the modules!! Amazing!
And then I got Diva X.... I loved the songs! A lil disappointed that LOL Lots of Laugh was in it again, but eh. I didn't mind the stage MVs personally, I just loved the songs. I liked the addition of the spamming buttons and as much as I personally didn't enjoy the grind fest that was the campaign or the magical girl transformation unlocking of the modules I pulled through and played basically all of it. (Still sad they just gave up on all the songs and modules on here. The modules were so pretty and I loved the medlys!)
And then Future Tone finally released on PS4 I was so hyped!! I got the Japanese version cause I was not convinced that they would release an English version and I played the shit out of it! Buying the different packs when I had money.
And I enjoyed every DLC pack.
But yeah, I also started to feel the loss of content by the time Future Tone DX came out... 1 new module and 2 songs?? Nah, I'm good. They're gonna release the songs eventually for Future Tone.
    And they did.
When Mega Mix released I didn't get the game. Even with me owning a switch. I didn't want to buy basically the same game again... Not for 10 new songs. It wasn't worth it to me. And I just waited for the new songs to be released for Future Tone and they did.
I love Future Tone and would love for it to keep getting support but I guess that is a lofty dream at this point... And that honestly makes me sad... But I will still have my copy of Future Tone to play even if I don't play it that much snymore I still come back to it from time to time.. ^^
Diva wasn't my entry to Vocaloid, but it did broaden my horizons.
Sorry that this got so long and rambly,, guess I had a lot to say about this series ^^'

I've been a fan of vocaloid music for years, it has been such a huge part of my life and impacted who I am. I've listened to vocaloid music since I was 7 years old and I loved project diva more than anything but even I've fell for project sekai. I recently bought MegaMix for my switch and I thought it would get me off project sekai. Up until I got MegaMix I had been telling myself I only played project sekai since I didn't have any way to play project diva after my playstation broke but after having it... I just can't make myself play it. I'm uninterested in it and sure I play it sometimes for nostalgia but I never really sit there just for the sake of playing, at most I'll do one or two songs or just sit and watch MVs. Then with project sekai I spend hours on it, I've grown to be attached to the cast of the game and I love the characters more than I used to be willing to admit. I get more excited over hearing about a song being covered by a unit than to hear one of my favourite producers is releasing a new song. Speaking of producers, the commissioned songs in project sekai are what made me fall inlove with it. Songs like Showtime Ruler or RAD DOGS or Infinitely Grey made me adore the game.
To be honest, the part that makes me the most sad is the fact I'm beginning to prefer the sekai versions of songs I listened to when I was younger. The moment I realized that I cant stand to listen to the original versions of my favourite songs was horrific. I hate project sekai, I love it but at the same time i can't help but wish it never existed. I miss project diva.

As someone who plays project diva, and project sekai! I remember opening up one TH-cam video and finding Vocaloid, then Project diva. I feel like Sega fell behind STRONGLY! With project sekai, the game is unbearably unoriginal, the charts are frankly very boring, and the situation with mobile apps and big brands really hurts. I hate seeing something I loved be ruined in the sake of just more money! I want the Vocaloid I know and love back

Tbh the trade back I have seen is that older vocaloid fans tend to stay on Project Diva or at least prefer it over Prosekai, which leads to problems. The rest of this comment is more of my opinion.
I remember there was a conversation how it seems that sega prefers the younger audience prosekai gives them since it gives more profit to an extent (this is more of a debated argument rather than a general consensus), something project diva can barely give due to the complications (game cost, overall learning curve of the game as I have observed). Which wouldn't be that bad if not for the fact this gives this situation where project diva community suffers due to the lack of support, but at the same time some might not be able or would never transition to prosekai due to it's focus on attaining such audience. It's not to say the transitions can't happen and that prosekai only has minors in it. But this definitely sets for a situation where the newer fan generation's lack of interaction with the older generation to lead in community problems that can bite prosekai back if it did not happened already.
So you have a community full of dedicated people being left in the ditch and a community being spoiled in favor of profit, with a harsh transition in between.
Prosekai did brought the creativity back through song contests, costume contests and overall more interaction to the community. That budget probably makes it possible for them, not to mention they aren't obligated to put full ver charts of the songs in a rhythm gacha game. But it somewhat stings knowing prosekai community may have a harder time reaching what Project Diva has in it's interactions with itself, or might never even be able to do so

The only thing really keeping PJD alive is the small community who keep making mods and the people who play them. PJS is thriving since it's so much easier to access, especially for the newest generation of vocaloid fans. I too downloaded it but didn't find it nearly as likeable as PJD so I immediately switched back, but people who already have experience with rhythm games like Bandori won't switch to PJD anytime soon.

I wish they would do a new Project Mirai. That game got so little love from Diva fans. Yes, some of the songs were "easy" (but there are plenty that aren't), but it was actually made for a console controller instead of a simple port of a four button arcade machine. The timings are much more involved than the simple "press buttons at the right moment" of the Diva games.
To be clear: I enjoy Diva too. I just want to see a new game really built for a console come out.

I became a vocaloid fan when I first saw Magician Miku performing Miracle Paint on Project Diva. I'm not really a rhythm gamer, but the songs had me hooked and I fell down to the deep hole of the vocaloid fandom. You know you're part of the vocaloid golden age if you still remember Nicosound and how to download from there. It was also thanks to vocaloid that I discovered great Utaite like Wotamin, Elie & Nagi Yanagi.

Project Sekai seems to get enough money from whales in JP with little efford.
So Sega doesn't want to go the extra mile and continue the Diva series.
I even doubt they *could* get back to the golden age of F/f2nd/X at this point.

As a Project Sekai player who's never played a Project Diva game, I can still feel the impact the franchise's downfall has had on fans. Project Diva has become a shell of its past self, and dare I say it, Project Sekai has pretty much replaced it. I love the old Project Diva pvs, and the new ones just lack any life. It's kinda sad, but it was eventually going to happen.

An amazing analysis. The only thing I think also needs to be stated is that SEGA has also been stepping away from the video game market as well.
Project Diva was always a console franchise and SEGA hasn’t developed their own games for years. The few games/franchises they still Publish are all ran by subsidiaries like Altus, Platinum, and Team Sonic. Project Diva was directly developed by SEGA and they no longer actively partake in that side of the business. Even the gaming subsidiaries that haven’t been extremely profitable are either rumored to be on sale or quietly shuttered.

thank you for addressing the arcades, it’s why i clicked on the video! i’m living in japan right now and one of the first things i looked for when i arrived was project diva arcade cabinets, and was so confused i couldn’t find any. there is a small SEGA arcade in shibuya that has a single project diva cabinet tucked in the corner, otherwise i haven’t found them anywhere. my friends and i are all vocaloid veterans and huge fans, so we travel around just looking for the chance to play arcade.
back home in the states, there’s a couple cabinets at a local arcade and it always brings together all the vocaloid fans in the area. i know things are rough with covid and that’s what killed arcades, but i really think they’re important for fans, too.

This video really speaks to me. my first game was f and i bought it after learning tokyo teddy bear was in it, since it was the song that got me into vocaloid, i loved the songs and i found the mvs to be so beautiful so when i found out f2nd existed and was on the same console i got it right away on my birthday, i was so so so happy with it, it helped me discover some of my favorite songs like pinky swear!
But ever since the past year i have been bed ridden and can only play on my phone or my pc so when they announced the megamix pc port this year i was ecstatic,i couls finally play project diva on my pc! i got it aroundside a month or so ago, and thats when i realized how different megamix and f/f2nd are... and just recently i sold my ps3 so that i could save money to buy a switch, so even if i was healthy, i cant play f/f2nd anymore (atleast not like i used to). I hope that, if project diva gets a new release, its a good one that brings things like old modules and songs back but also gives us new songs with beautiful modules and mvs.

it is sad that it seems like project diva has been abandoned by sega, especially after the franchise carried the vocaloid community for so long. But I have to admit, project sekai was the smartest move they could probably have made here. A widely accessible mobile game that still features the 6 cryptonloids but has 20 whole original characters with plenty of original story content. Having the characters cover the songs as well helps introduce songs to new and old fans, and it breathes new life into those songs as well. MVs and costumes are really nice, and since it’s mobile updates are constant and easy, and events are constantly running and most importantly, new songs are constantly added. The rhythm game part is always fun to play, and you can play with others, and it’s not ALL there is to do anymore. There’s an emotional core to the game now, characters to get attached to enough to keep people playing the game. It costs (most) fans less money. It truly is sad to see project diva go, but honestly, I really love project sekai too, perhaps more, but I didn’t grow up with diva as much as others did. But the most important thing that project sekai did, in my opinion, that I will always love it for, is that it has, for now at least, completely obliterated the notion that vocaloid is dying out. Since 2017 vocaloid was clearly in decline, and I was worried with Covid and the arcade decline and lack of miku expos and such, the community might never experience growth again. But it has, and continues to, and lots of older songs are being appreciated now more than ever, and new ones are being written by amazing producers for the game. I am very grateful that sega, at least, in some way perhaps, managed to keep vocaloid going with project sekai.

DIVA X’s release was such a double edged sword. I followed everything as news came out, seeing how many producers the game featured, only to be told we’d get 30 songs, some of which returning. A lot of good new songs, but only stage PVs. A very bland story mode, but great medleys! It was all so conflicting. Then port after port of Arcade… it was hard to keep supporting the series, but, like you mentioned in the video, I wanted to show SEGA we wanted these things here in the west. I support Sekai/Colorful Stage the same way. The gameplay of Arcade and main series DIVA are way different to me, and I prefer what we had in F2nd/X. Would I want another game in that style? Of course, but at this point, my dream game is just a compilation of F, F2nd, and X with 60fps on PS4/Switch.
Also fun fact to bring up, what makes the cut for The Comical Dream of Mrs. Pumpkin worse, the full version is in the game. All the songs from DIVA X have full choreography for every song bc of the Edit Mode replacement. They really could have just let the song run for like 3 more seconds with a better cut, but for whatever reason they just didn’t.

I'm amazed how you addressed the graphical differences (arcade games graphics look so much worse from console stuff) but somehow didn't even mention the gameplay difference between console and arcade. My main issue is that I absolutely hate arcade gameplay (so megamix, future tone and arcade) and X was the last proper console game but it sucked in every other way. Basically the game died with F2nd for me, which is sad because those games were 30 FPS where they feel awful to play in comparison now without emulation.

One of the main problems I've had with recent releases like future tone and onwards is that they're released with the intention of being played on playstation controllers, but the charts aren't. The charts are designed to be played on the arcade controller with its linear layout, and have just been ported over exactly. So they're all full of multinotes and note placements which only really make sense on the linear arcade inputs.
I really don't think it would have been that much effort to just change little bits here and there to make the charts make more sense on playstation controllers when porting to that console, but they just never bothered.

  • @vmkalima
    @vmkalima 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

You're completely right on everything you said. I got into the franchise through f2nd, and imo the only reason why it's so successful is because it is a community driven game. The players could make their custom charts with custom difficulties, as well as PVs that would transmit a visual interpretation of the song, just as you said. After f2nd, it was clear that sega wasn't investing on project diva anymore, and it just felt really sad seeing ports of ports of ports of future tone. As someone who played for the charts and their difficulty, f2nd's edit mode was fine to me for many years, but there have been many community efforts to recreate that community environment with newer technologies recently. Besides the modding community for megamix on pc, there's also this community driven game "Project Heartbeat" which is a very faithful and easier to use recreation of f2nd's edit mode, allowing players to make both f2nd and FT style charts, except for the PV making feature. It's a very good alternative for people that played just for the community charts and difficulties, as there are many people creating their charts with their own difficulties for any music they might want, vocaloid or not. Only downside is that you can't make/have PVs in there. At the end of the day, what dictates project diva's death or life will be the community. Imo, since f2nd, the ones keeping it alive were the active players that still poured hundreds of hours, no matter what sega did or not. If players continue showing their love for the series, regardless of being through MM+ mods, community driven games like project heartbeat, or youtube videos sharing their thoughts on the series, personally, I think the core of Project Diva will not die.

Project Heartbeat on steam has huge potential and probably deserves more attention. It has an easy to use editor, workshop support, multiplayer, and loads songs from megamix, even mods. It just doesn't do anything 3D, it's all mp4 videos in the background. Community made charts also kind of skew towards the harder side, but the community can also fix that by creating and curating more.

I'm honestly surprised nobody mentioned this at all. The one thing i noticed when Hatsune Miku Project Diva X came out for the first time, the Diva Rooms had been taken out of the game. Along with some of the songs that i would play and enjoy in previous Project Diva games. I liked how they added in a story for the Vocaloids in Project Diva X, but they should of kept the Diva rooms in the games at least. I would spend hours on end playing in the Diva rooms. Decorating the rooms, playing mini games with each Vocaloid. And interacting with each Vocaloid for hours on end. No matter what Vocaloid game comes out, Sega and Krypton Future Media just doesn't seem to care about the Diva rooms in Vocaloid games anymore. Like i remember Project Mirai brought the Diva rooms back, but after that in the later games like Project Diva X, that was just cut out of the game. It disappointed me as a long time fan. I'd still play these games to this day, but i miss the times that Sega and Krypton Future Media took to make the games so unique. And more then just your typical rhythm game. Hopefully in future Vocaloid games they could bring back the Diva rooms. This is one part of the Vocaloid games that i miss to this very day.

What I miss in the 'new' PD games is many things that made the 'old' PD games so good! The variety of new and fully remade 3D pv's of the songs (not just a YT rip of the original pv), the ending animation where Miku says how well you did, the Diva rooms where you can interact with the vocaloids, and yes even the kind of story from PDX (though I disliked the module random unlock roulet system). PD could be even better if they included VR interaction in the Diva room like being able to play reversi (like on Project Mirai) with your favorite vocaloid in VR, and being able to choose between the re-animated 3D PV of the song or the original YT / Niconico version of the song.
