- No-nonsense guide on replacing spark plugs and ignition coils in the 1.6thp engine found in Citroen, Peugeot, and Mini.
You will need:
Torque Wrench
14mm Thin-walled Spark Plug Socket
New Plugs
New Coils
Spark Plug Gap tool if your plugs aren't pre-gapped
I have found the cheapest way to do this job is with parts from RockAuto, but your mileage may vary. I used:
BOSCH 9710 #ZR7SI332S Spark Plugs
BOSCH 0221504800 Ignition Coils
Spark plugs should be kept no more than 30,000km on a completely stock engine. If you have a remap, it is advisable to renew them every 20,000km because you will notice a big drop in performance as you go over the 20,000km limit.
A good way to check their condition is by measuring spark gap. Stock spark gap is 0.8mm. The moment it goes over 0.9mm, ignition problems start to occur. For engines with a remap, we recommend setting the spark gap to 0.6mm. This will increase spark plug wear but will improve spark power by a lot. Only the heat range of Platinum and Iridium is suitable for turbo engines.
Useful codes:
Iridium - ILZKBR7A-8G (Peugeot RCZ THP200, Citroen DS4 Racing THP200, Mini Cooper S Works Edition)
Platinum - PLZKBR7A-G (stock 150/156/165hp and 175hp)
I've watched your DS5 videos and they really help. I've subbed in case you do any more. Appreciated!
I'm happy they helped you. I've got a few videos planned for the future so stay tuned!
Hello, whats the recommended plus for the 5fv motor? NGK or Bosch?
but why also replace Coils - The spark plug gap burns out, but the coils generally shouldn't wear out?
These BMW coils should generally be replaced every 50,000 kms. I have had many sets fail on me over the years, including these ones. They are extremely cheap, and it's easy preventative maintenance.
Hello! I keep getting "Engine fault, repair needed" sporadically. Sometimes I can drive my car for 15 minutes without any errors and sometimes it will keep coming with a couple of seconds delay. When I scan the car with my simple ODB scanner I can't see any codes at all...? The car runs just fine. Do you have any advice on this? My car is a DS5 2012 1.6 THP
Basic OBD scanners can't access all systems. If that warning light is coming on there should be codes stored. See if you can get Diagbox to scan the car, or take it to a mechanic.
@@HeroRepairs Thanks, I will try to get a better scanner. But is it normal that the fault message disappears completely from the dash, and comes back a few seconds later?
@@LiteLagom It could be an intermittent problem, but either way there should be some codes logged. The proper Citroen diagnostic tool should be able to see them.
@@HeroRepairs Hi again! It was P2600, turbo cooling pump. So I will start to check the fuse for bad connection (I saw that someone had that problem) and if thats not the problem I'll change the pump.
@@LiteLagom I'm glad you found a code! I imagine you will end up changing the pump, these electric coolant pumps are pretty notorious for breaking. It often happens in an intermittent fashion like you described too. Be careful driving your car until you get the problem fixed, overheating the turbo can cause catastrophic engine failure.
