  • Grandia was originally made for the Saturn in 1997, but… you know, it was only available in Japan. Did you play the Saturn version? Anyway, the game made its way over to the PS1, where it quickly found a place the hearts of JRPG fans at the time for its fun story and cast coupled with a great, peppy battle system. Over 25 years later, its reputation has fostered a solid following that appreciate the title for the cozy atmosphere and lovable presentation, but is it really worth playing for newer JRPG fans? Let’s take a long trek across the lands in search of an answer. Or at least, the one I’m able to provide.
Footage of Thousand Arms, Wild Arms, Jade Coccoon, Alundra, Azure Dreams, Breath of Fire, Brigandine, Chrono Cross, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 7-9, Grandia 2, 3, and Xtreme, Illusion of Gaia, Legend of Dragoon, Legend of Legaia, Lunar Silver Star Story, TMNT Smash Up, Suikoden 2, Vagrant Story, Valkyrie Profile, Vandal Hearts, and Xenogears is borrowed from the channel 10 Min Gameplay.

What’s your favorite PS1 JRPG that isn’t from Square?

I can’t pick a single favourite, but probably one of these: Koudelka, Wild Arms and Grandia.

Grandia is my favourite game of all time! I remember picking it up at a carboot sale many moons ago before I even knew what a jrpg was and fell in love with the game. 😁

I like this game far more than Grandia 2 which is far too up its butt about being serious. I not only own the PS1 release and the Limited Run release, I bought the Asian release when I was in Hong Kong. I own it three times!

As a kid I struggled a lot with Baal in the final encounter but if you level well he’s no biggie and you can attack all parts. The only really difficult part is the optional Tower of Temptation

I'm glad you liked this game overall, but as a longtime lover of it myself who has grown up with the game and played it at least a dozen times, I have to say something in regards to your complaint/critique about the magic. You never mentioned this so I'm not sure if you're aware, but every weapon and magic you level up in this game is also tied to specific STATS. Leveling earth grants strength, leveling fire grants wit (faster action for turn order), etc. Yes, Justin may lean towards physical damage, but you're still encouraged to level up his magic not just to get more options through spells and abilities but because EVERY level up of EVERY magic type increases his stats. And for the record, he CAN hit very hard with magic - all the Zap spells are quite powerful, and Feena only gets a single spell in that category very late in the game, while Justin has several available much earlier, assuming you give him fire and wind. ALSO, any party members that permanently leave your party leave their entire inventory PLUS new items in the stash. Those new items give a huge chunk of the experience they earned with their weapons and magic to whoever you choose, instantly granting you many levels. So if Sue was your main magic user and had a relatively high earth level, you could have given the item to Justin and probably IMMEDIATELY gained enough levels to get Dragon Cut. Or you could have also compensated with Gadwin's, since he also had earth experience to give. Between the two it's likely you wouldn't HAVE to "waste" a single turn using earth magic with Justin at all.
I just had to say this because to me it really doesn't feel like a waste to go out of your way to level Justin's magic. He has several great offensive spells AND gets boosted stats. But even if you don't want to take the time to level his magic, the game does give you a free way to get the levels you need anyway. And for the record both tips I just gave you are given as "hints" in the game at various save points.

Is that so? I had no idea that was how the system works, so thanks for the info. I’ll keep it in mind if I decide to replay this game, it should make things much easier.
      Thank ya kindly for watching.

awwwwwwwwwww shit, another Hoodllie vid. Grandia's been on my backlog forever. The only thing I'm skeptical about is the smoothing done in the re-release. It's not as bad as the Final Fantasy games, but it's not great imo either. The portraits look good, but the sprites and little 3D models are so smooth. idk. I'm torn.

I can get that. I didn’t really mind it all that much. I think they look alright in motion, and they’re moving pretty much all the time.

I would say that Grandia is all about the path and not the destiny. Justin didn't know what was expecting him, and also didn't know if there was something ahead. Take the "End of the World" wall as example, only Galileo Force knew that it was not the end at all. But they went there and discovered an entire new world. And then you meet new cultures and friends but you need to say goodbye. And it is shocking, there are no fast travels, no way back, It's not a bye, it's a goodbye

I don’t know if I would be able to play an RPG where the companions can just leave. When I get an companion in a game and there are good, then they become my treasure. And after seeing Gadwin I don’t know if I could jsut let him go. Who needs romance if they could have someone like Gadwin, or Fallout 2’S Marcus?

Calling Grandia a PS1 game when it was originally on the Sega Saturn is so rude.
Same with Grandia II; that is a Dreamcast game.

    • @HoodlieRPG
      @HoodlieRPG  หลายเดือนก่อน

      1. Nobody outside of Japan played Grandia on the Saturn, and even then I’m pretty sure the PS1 version is the preferred version. 2. I never said Grandia 2 was a PS1 game, so I don’t know where you were getting that.

I mean… it got you to leave a comment. And it’s not like I said this is some absurdly hidden gem, it just doesn’t get as much attention as, say, Square’s offerings of the time, despite how fondly people remember it.
