Among the general public the console itself is underappreciated but further within that scope I'd say Legend of Oasis, Rayforce/Layer Section, Darius Gaiden, Shining the Holyark, and Mystaria/Blazing Heroes off the top of my head.
Part of the reason why the Saturn gets overlooked is because some of their fans seem to be their best to scare people away. Many like to act extremely elitist and only care about expensive stuff and frown upon people who burn games or use ODEs while others can't stop shitting on other consoles like the PS1 and N64 for no reason, which is not exactly the best way to get people to appreciate the Saturn. Those games you mentioned are definitely some of the games a enjoyed the most on the Saturn BTW.
@@RetrOrigin Honestly that kind of bickering and infighting has happened with every generation originating from the 16-bit era and through the PS2/Gamecube/Xbox generation. Ten. Pin. Alley. Best family/fun game on the Saturn. I loved it as much as Wii Bowling. It had so much charm, and unlike the PS1 version, it didn’t require three strikes in a row to get the good bowler reactions.
I saw three dirty dwarves in a kiosk in a Target I think as a teen. Loved how it looked and knew I had to own it many years later when I got my Saturn. =)

OMG Casper! I played this one the 3DO or Playstation...and I had so much fun with it. I made good progress, but either lost my save file, or the disc stopped working or something =( But it's really fun. I'd definitely recommend it.
I don’t care what anyone says 5th generation consoles were the best generation. 4th generation was fantastic and 5th was a huge leap ahead of that at the time in terms of great arcade quality games, fantastic new 3d games, emergence of amazing rpg and FPS games, the ps1, Saturn and n64 were all giving you something amazing. 6th gen and beyond May have improved graphically, but the wow factor from gaming was gone, too many collection of games and remakes and rereleases were starting to happen which completely waters down the consoles library of games. Right on brother . It makes today’s games look like a joke . The creativity in the 90’s was out of this world. Today is remakes and remasters of the best gen stuff …
Amok is amazing. I love the control and challenge. The secrets and secret levels, even the coop is pretty great. Music so addictive. The graphics always reminded me of blood with the vocals. Love voxels they are so pretty. Even quake champions doom edition has voxel weapons.
Oh wow, those transparency effects on Casper look great. Especially for the Saturn, since getting it to work on VDP1 was a real pain. I heard you had to mark each individual pixel for transparency to do it right, otherwise you'd either get transparency that would erase everything else behind it on VPD1 or just use the mesh effect (which is what most devs would end up doing).
Games I would also add to your list are Shining Force 3: Premium Disk, Powerslave, F1 Challenge, Mr Bones, Purikura, Sengoku Blade, Steep Slope Slides, Virtual ON, Warriors of Fate 2, Willy Wombat and Winter Heat.
Mr. Bones is brutally difficult because you only get a single life like with Comix Zone, but a secret button input at the title screen lets you skip ahead to pick up where you died.
I have such fond memories of playing Mr Bones with my sister back in the day. I don't understand why it get so much hate these days. I still have the Icy Lake song burned into my mind. I could never finish that stage though.
@@Estorium as a kid, the icy lake is where my journey ended. Could never pass that stage, and when I grew up, I still couldn't pass it. I found a cheat code that allowed me to bypass the stage because I really wanted closure and see what the rest of the game had to offer. Wasn't disappointed.
@@SuperChaosControl I should tackle this game again sometime soon I think. I wish I still owned a physical copy of it, but I guess emulation has to do. I will definitely be using a cheat code too :)
Always got time for this style of video. I think there is actually a ton of interesting stuff on the Saturn that's gone unexplored, it's just that a lot of it is locked behind a language barrier in Japanese. Terra Phantastica, which had Phantasy Star staff working on it, is more impressive looking than Final Fantasy Tactics was. I've never, ever heard it mentioned in the West. The Japanese Saturn's rpg library goes DEEP. There's also a mountain of colourful puzzlers on the system with a ton of personality (a lot of match 3 clones too). Even the sketchy looking bikini girl jigsaw puzzle games are a pretty chill time. There might be enough puzzlers to rival the system's fighter & shmup libraries. Then there are just weird oddities like Hyper Golf, and the epically named "Big Thanks - Super Keirin - Dream With Keirin 50 Years" (which is the only cycle racing videogame I've ever seen).
Thanks for helping me discover more and more about the Sega Saturn. I'm 40 and I didn't know anyone who owned one. My household we had Genesis and Snes until well after the release of Golden eye and nwo revenge on the N64 then we got one. My cousin had a PS1 while we had N64. All these games are new to me.
3 dirty dwarfs is a game i never played but always wanted to. Wish sega would do a sega saturn collection and have all these unseen gems to a wider audience.
Machinehead is my vote for underappreciated Saturn game, lots of speedrun potential good 3d graphics no slowdown and the controls are mapped fine, playing the game is reminiscent of operating machinery and when you get used to them it's really fun to race around and fly off jumps and shoot things with your variety of weapons
This is great! I didn't know about a lot of these. I happened to pick up a special edition of Cyberbots when I visited Japan in 1999 ... I got so many used videogames especially in Akihabara that trip.
I loved seeing pandemonium on this list, I played this one a bunch. When I reaquired a Saturn this past year it was the 2nd game I got. I would have added Crusader:No Remorse to the list. That was the first game I looked for when I got a Saturn.
I'd like to give a shout out to the game 'Mr. Bones'. Developed and published by Sega and remains a Saturn exclusive. Just like you said with Casper, back in the day I played the game for 60 seconds and shut it off. Decades later I came back to it, and found it to be a very unique game. It almost feels like an amped up Sega CD game. Some levels have FMV backgrounds (like Sewer Shark or Silpheed). Every level plays completely different and the cutscenes are top quality. Great voice acting and music. The only thing that is working against the game is the frustrating difficulty. Even the first level makes you want to shut off the game in rage. Best to grab the manual to see what the goal of each stage is or get a guide for pointers. But if you stick with it, the game really pays off with a VERY entertaining story.
Tempest 2000 is so rad! I was playing it on my PS Classic a few years ago, and further made me realize I should have had a PS back in the day instead of the N64.
I would love to see Tempest 2000 converted to N64, even today. It's an amazing game, the short clip here didn't really do it justice. Hopefully Sega Lord X will review it soon!
Great video, i love to discover new games. Definitely going to add some to my list. Loved Pandemonium on PS1 back then. I kinda considered it always in the same world as Legend of Kyrandia because of the Jester character.
I was a Nintendo kid growing up. Honestly I don’t think I even knew Sega existed.. I still have my appreciation for Nintendo, but looking back on Sega’s hardware and software I appreciate that Sega would take risks and experiment. I wish more companies would venture out a little bit now and take a few risks
I love the hand drawn aesthetic of Three Angry Dwarves. It actually reminds me of Ralph Bakshi. Assuming anybody here is old like me and knows who that is... Animator who made Fritz The Cat, Wizards, Cool World, Fire and Ice.
Trust me, I have never slept on Parodius, have them all, including the MSX version for my Saturn, all the SNES/SFC ones, the Game Boy one, the PSP collection, and most of them for my PS1. EGM magazine back in the day introduced me to the seriews via their Import Games section, so have known about the for decades. I swore in those days I'd play and one day own the entire series, and have had them for several years now.
Your final comment about tastes changing and how a great game can be hidden away behind a bad opening level was spot on. There's a tonne of games where the 1st level is just plain crap, but level 2 is amazing. Those are easy ones to overlook and consequently miss out on a nice experience. Also, as I've aged, I have slowed down considerably. Having kids too has contributed, and also made me appreciate different types of gaming experience. I would've never even considered playing The Little Mermaid as a teen, but when my 11 year old daughter spotted it in a ROM list recently, we absolutely HAD to play it... "I don't like this game, Daddy." She said. "Good girl." I agreed. 😆
I TOTALLY FORGOT ABOUT THREE DIRTY DWARVES!!.....WOOOW!! Now THAT'S some damn nostalgia right there! ❤ I remember playing that when I used to work at Funcoland.
Good luck finding Elan doree its very rare. I've been searching for a copy ever since the video was uploaded. I ended up burning a copy. It's a very fun game that pushes the Saturn ability. Definetly belongs on this list. Oh and three dirty dwarves aswell.
Hey, Casper is really great, for those who like puzzle and backtracking to solve and advance, great soundtrack from the movie and visuals as well, the 3DO version is good as well and the PS has some loading when you morph into a new form, it's not game breaking but it's noticeable once you are used to the Saturn version. Other games I'd like people to know better are Advanced World War - Sennen Teikoku no Koubou - Last of the Millennium which has one of the most impressive 3D battle scenes produced on the hardware and Goiken Muyou: Anarchy on Nippon, it seems to use the same engine as Virtua Fighter 2, but is a more comic take on the formula.
There are a few differences between each version, the 3DO, the text has a different font, there are no loading screens between areas, probably because the game loads a bit faster on the 3DO than other versions, overall, the game looks identical between the 3 versions, 3DO seems slightly better than the Saturn regarding loadings, the Saturn is as solid and the PS1 has more loadings and stalls a little when you morph into another form. And maybe a few differences in sound effects, though I'm not 100% of this since it's been a long time since I tried each version.
I think shinobi legions/x is pretty under appreciated. People kind of crap on the game for using digitized sprites and having cheesy bad acting cutscenes, but I think the core gameplay which is very similar to Shinobi 3 and the music are fantastic. Plus the game is hard and if you want a true challenging Shinobi game then legions/X is the game to play.
One of the first games I got for the system and still one of my favorites. The reason people shit on it aren't even the Power Ranger cutscenes, it's that it feels and plays sloppier than its immediate predecessor, Shinobi 3. I distinctly remember more rigid animations, wack collision detection and way, way too many leaps of faith with no idea what's below you, especially in the midgame. Unpopular opinion: as much as I like Richard Jacques, I actually prefer the US soundtrack on this one.
Scorcher and AMOK were some of my best 32-bit experiences back in the day, in fact I remember changing my mind about selling my Saturn solely due to those two titles, and maybe NiGHTS lol.
Some of these games cost an arm today. I bought Tempest 2000 brand new and sealed in the 90's a couple of bucks in a Cash Converter. It's a freakin nervous game and i love it. I already had it on the Atari Jaguar, but it sounds fantastic on the Sega Saturn.
Since RetroArch released on iOS I’ve FINALLY been able to play the SEGA Saturn😁 & so far I’ve not been let down!!! I played Panzer Dragoon & it was sooo fun! Now I downloaded Zwei & Saga & other games like Magic Knight Rayearth & Guardian Heroes Now I can finally play Policenauts & Snatcher 🙌👏
I am a big fan of the early Resident Evil games, and Deep Fear is right up there in my book. It is the same well known format as you say, controls, mix och story, puzzles, suspense and action. Make sure to watch the 1989 movie Leviathan too, the development team of Deep Fear definitely watched that a few times :)
Holy shoot! How had I never heard of Cyberbots? When Rise of the Robots sucked I was hanging for a cool 1v1 fighter with robots. (we don't talk about Heavy Nova) On another note; being able to see what a game/movie is aiming for can indeed make it easier to engage with as you get older. While at the time I would've written something off as just 'bad' and left it at that, when I go back I can see where the developers maybe had to cut corners for space or perf reasons =)
*Robo Pit* 3d bot builder arena combat. Its delayed audio hurts; unless you enjoy bad. But the learning curve and variety were a welcome aspect. I remember getting it cheap after the death and more than got my value out of it
If you happen to make a follow-up video to this, I'd love to see you include Willy Wombat! It's a game from Westone, the creators of Wonder Boy, and is an excellent platformer with an interesting story that's totally understandable in English due to an English dub. It's a well-crafted game full of secrets and challenge, and I feel it doesn't get anywhere near as much love as it really should.
Solar eclipse! That was the first 32 bit Game I ever played when we rented the Saturn and I’ve been looking for it ever cents but all I could find is total eclipse you made my day sir because I couldn’t remember what it was called
Cyberbots was one of the games which pushed me to start collecting for Saturn. In particular, this version included content which is not available in the arcade version such as extra playable characters. My favorite is Princess Devilotte and her Super-8 octopus mech. It's a shame that there was no Saturn port of Armored Warriors / Powered Gear but at least that has been rectified on current year consoles.

Man, I haven’t heard of a single one of these game! I want to play them all now! Even Casper. Great list
Mr. Bones is one that comes to mind for me. Loved that game.
I have such fond memories of playing Mr Bones with my sister back in the day. I don't understand why it get so much hate these days. I still have the Icy Lake song burned into my mind. I could never finish that stage though.
@@Estorium The Icy Lake is one of the most evil and vile things to ever have graced the earth.
@@SuperChaosControl Yes it is! I am glad that I am not alone in thinking this.
I had friends over playing SEGA Saturn and we loved the system. Many great memories!
Not to mention all those mech fighting games I wish we got the Japanese library
Thanks for helping me discover more and more about the Sega Saturn. I'm 40 and I didn't know anyone who owned one. My household we had Genesis and Snes until well after the release of Golden eye and nwo revenge on the N64 then we got one. My cousin had a PS1 while we had N64. All these games are new to me.
Three Dirty Dwarfs looks amazing, and like you said the concept is out of this world. Would really like to play it.
X-Men Children of The Atom is good, just set the speed to fast during fights. Anything normal or slow tends to really slog.
Any of those fighting games are great, the imports w/ ram cart are pretty much arcade perfect
3 dirty dwarfs, sounds like my bachelor party
Lmao
3 dirty dwarfs is a game i never played but always wanted to. Wish sega would do a sega saturn collection and have all these unseen gems to a wider audience.
Machinehead is my vote for underappreciated Saturn game, lots of speedrun potential good 3d graphics no slowdown and the controls are mapped fine, playing the game is reminiscent of operating machinery and when you get used to them it's really fun to race around and fly off jumps and shoot things with your variety of weapons
Your commentary about the current state of games and perspective shift with age is spot on man
This is great! I didn't know about a lot of these.
I happened to pick up a special edition of Cyberbots when I visited Japan in 1999 ... I got so many used videogames especially in Akihabara that trip.
Amok is one of my favs on the system. The voxels landscapes look like nothing else that exists at the time and i love the Jesper Kyd soundtrack.
I love Pandemonim,best 2,5 D platormer ever.Its also on Ps1 and PC.
I’ve always loved pandemonium and cyberbots
I loved seeing pandemonium on this list, I played this one a bunch. When I reaquired a Saturn this past year it was the 2nd game I got. I would have added Crusader:No Remorse to the list. That was the first game I looked for when I got a Saturn.
Christmas '96 I got Mario 64, Cruis'n USA, Wayne Gretzky's 3d Hockey, Tomb Raider, and Pandemonium. Those five games will always be linked in my mind
You should check out 3000 on the Nuon. Still one of, if not the best version of Tempest.
@@supersanic1254 Would love to get a Nuon and Tempest 3000, but the price barrier is too high. Maybe one day it'll get a port.
Last Gladiators pinball was my underappreciated Saturn game. Great game play and music.
I really really enjoyed this episode.
Saturn looks so good in hd.
This guy is a content machine
The Saturn had its issues but there was certainly a lot to love. Videos like this are great. Thanks for the great content man.
Casper may be the best Hangover game ever. slow paced, easy and brings your brain back to life!
Wish I'd have kept my Saturn. I loved it. Sega rally and NBA jam was my favourite Saturn games.
I had no idea that second fighting game existed. 1999 on Saturn? That's beyond obscure. 🤯🤯🤯
Ah three dirty dwarves. The first saturn game i ever played.
At the end of your videos, I'm always thinking "You won't catch me next time" but here I am, watching another one of your videos :-)
Fantastic content as usual
Finally pandemonium! This was my shit when i was 5-7 years old
I played this at age 20,
@@adam1984pl bro i was born in 95’ and when my dad bought his ps1 in 00 01 he gave me his saturn and it was over!
Three dirty dwarfs, i would never remember this great game if it weren't for you lord X! thank you for that!
I TOTALLY FORGOT ABOUT THREE DIRTY DWARVES!!.....WOOOW!! Now THAT'S some damn nostalgia right there! ❤ I remember playing that when I used to work at Funcoland.
13:12 Is that Vampire Killer? :O
Dang I loved Solar Eclipse! The pacing of the game was great and never felt a dull moment!
Great video! Bunches of games I've never tried before & will probably now give a shot. Thanks!
Good luck finding Elan doree its very rare. I've been searching for a copy ever since the video was uploaded. I ended up burning a copy. It's a very fun game that pushes the Saturn ability. Definetly belongs on this list. Oh and three dirty dwarves aswell.
definitely a few of these I've heard of but never checked out... may have to rectify that soon!
I always love Storytime with Sega Lord X !!
Parodius did release in Europe. I got a copy of it recently.
Clockwork Knight... nobody ever talks about Clockwork Knight 😔
Bloody *loved* that game
I played orginal Tempest on Amstrad Cpc,from cassette.
Are there any differences you noticed between the Saturn and 3DO versions?
There are a few differences between each version, the 3DO, the text has a different font, there are no loading screens between areas, probably because the game loads a bit faster on the 3DO than other versions, overall, the game looks identical between the 3 versions, 3DO seems slightly better than the Saturn regarding loadings, the Saturn is as solid and the PS1 has more loadings and stalls a little when you morph into another form. And maybe a few differences in sound effects, though I'm not 100% of this since it's been a long time since I tried each version.
Great video! Played Casper this year liked it a lot. Only game i have finished this year. Congrats
@@NucleaRaptor very good take on it, I do prefer Jacques soundtrack but I grew up with legions so that’s the soundtrack I associate the game with.
Since RetroArch released on iOS I’ve FINALLY been able to play the SEGA Saturn😁
& so far I’ve not been let down!!! I played Panzer Dragoon & it was sooo fun! Now I downloaded Zwei & Saga & other games like Magic Knight Rayearth & Guardian Heroes
Now I can finally play Policenauts & Snatcher 🙌👏
Been on a Saturn kick lately and always love the content. Good job!
(we don't talk about Heavy Nova)
On another note; being able to see what a game/movie is aiming for can indeed make it easier to engage with as you get older. While at the time I would've written something off as just 'bad' and left it at that, when I go back I can see where the developers maybe had to cut corners for space or perf reasons =)
It has characters from MVC1 and 2.
@@SgtSega Man that sounds frikkn awesome O_O
Couple personal favorites of mine were Blazing Dragons and Bug Too.
OMG I love the new intro!!! Great video as always. Indeed there are titles i never knew!
*Robo Pit*
3d bot builder arena combat. Its delayed audio hurts; unless you enjoy bad.
But the learning curve and variety were a welcome aspect. I remember getting it cheap after the death and more than got my value out of it
Tempest 2000 is a fantastic game. Would love to see a Jeff Minter/ Lamasoft collection released.
Great intro
Cyberbots was one of the games which pushed me to start collecting for Saturn. In particular, this version included content which is not available in the arcade version such as extra playable characters. My favorite is Princess Devilotte and her Super-8 octopus mech.
It's a shame that there was no Saturn port of Armored Warriors / Powered Gear but at least that has been rectified on current year consoles.
Deep Fear is one I've been aware of but never knew what it was about. It sounds like the episode of SeaQuest I wish we got.
