I think one reason why so many Saturn games are finally getting translatons is the huge improvement in Saturn emulation recently which has opened it up to a whole new generation and made it more accessible.
Yeah, emulation is why I got a Saturn last year. I was born in 2001 so the Saturn was before my time and growing up I was always told by my Dad and people on the internet that the Saturn was nothing but a mediocre PS1 competitor that had nothing to offer me. Last year I was getting into space shooters and wanted to try out Radiant Silvergun, so I loaded it up in Mednafen and it played beautifully. I quickly fell into the rabbit hole of amazing Japanese Saturn games, got myself a Japanese model 1 Saturn with a Fenrir, and have been almost non-stop playing the console for months.
definitely a pretty well timed video as I JUST imported a Japanese saturn this month, and my next pickup is definitely gonna be a Pseudo Saturn kai cartridge. so for those games that got translated I could just pick up repros of those in english, and get to check them out! some of these were on my list to import anyway, but I might have to switch it for the translated versions!
I still argue with my gamer friends on how underrated the Sega Saturn is and here's more proof! Much respect to the Saturn modding community for bringing a lot of these lost gems to a lot of the English-speaking Saturn fans who never got a chance to enjoy them! I look forward to seeing more fan translations for Saturn and other classic consoles! It is great to finally be able to enjoy a lot of games that were never officially localized outside of Japan!

The intro to this video - said exactly how it was back then…. I had to sell my entire sega collection in 2013. Thankfully I have emulation, but the one machine I don’t really have and miss dearly is the Saturn. I miss it a hella lot. It was my only true friend at my secondary school years. Laughed at by Derpy PlayStation kids, it was me and my Saturn being in the “know”. Most couldn’t even understand the 2d fighters, and actually believed there previous generation SNES could do this (face palm) - them seeing vf2 or panzer zwei made there jaws drop in confusion…Good times. Such a misunderstood amazing machine
Wait, Phantasmagoria wasn't in English on the Saturn? Were all the menus in Japanese? The game on PC was a hell of an experience when I was younger...def one of the best FMV games ever made (and by the legendary Sierra Studios no less).
Small update: Prisoner of Ice was released on PC too. It's a great traditional adventure game based on H.P. Lovecraft books. Phantasmagoria is the same example. It was one of most expensive games of that time made by Sierra.
I owned Phantasmagoria on PC back in the day. Came on 6 discs, I think it was more expensive to buy than most PC games. I was surprised it never made it to the Saturn in the US with it being a Sierra game and originally in English. It's not a great game but one I've got a lot of love for
Even tho there was that impressive demo in Sonic Jam of what we could have got for a 3d Sonic Saturn Game, Ninja Penguin Manmaru is a reminder of what we probably would have got, and how Sega probably wanted to avoid that in a particular realization of the changing times. I always assumed they wanted more out of a 3d game from their title fast paced driven character, but the question is if it happened would it be better than Sonic 3d or fondly remembered?
I think they cancelled the Sonic game because they knew it was not a good game. They were still trying to figure out How 3d platformers would work. After crash and Mario 64 set the way, it was easier for the companys to reply the formula with just a few changes.
I've been playing almost exclusively Saturn translations for the past 3-4 years since it's my favorite console, I used to want them so bad, and now I can't even keep up with all the new titles! It's awesome to have such a tough choice what to play next. I got my top two most wanted in SFIII scenarios and Policenauts, but I love so many of these and there are still dozens of other titles I'd love.
Somewhat surprised you didn't mention the translation project for Lunar: Eternal Blue that started a few months ago, by the same people who did the first game!
We still need translations for those games : Sorvice Langrisser 4 and 5 Solo crisis Devil summoner And many more unknown games ( like funky fantasy or culdcept)
Love watching the channel. Obviously, there's a great following for the Saturn. I wasn't one of them I had the 32x attachment. So at the time Christmas 95 get a saturn that's 32bit or wait a yr for the n64 I waited. For me with sega had the original genesis next system I got was a launch dreamcast. I'd bounce between systems. Started on atari, then got the nes, skipped snes for genesis, back to nintendo for n64, then back to sega for dreamcast.
It blows my mind how many games with full English voice overs didn’t see Western releases. I can’t even imagine there’s much need for English text in any of these - how hard would it have been to bring them over?!
It's cool seeing what fan translations do now with different systems and all these "lost" games. Makes me wonder if there are any other titles that could use a good fan translation on the Genesis/CD/32x or Dreamcast.
32x has 1 JP exclusive I think, San Goku Shi (a strategy game). Genesis has few interesting ones at this point too; most people mention Surging Aura, but from what I've played it's not 'that' great (not bad either though). CD... I think it had some RPG and such, but alongside Genesis it was a fairly unpopular console in Japan, so there wasn't a ton of exclusives. Saturn had the most by far (close to a thousand, but a lot of mahjong, baseball etc.) Dreamcast is probably number two, but I'm not sure what it had besides lots of visual novels... that's worth investigating!
Back in the day I played my Saturn more than my PS1 except for things like Castlevania, Metal Gear and resident evil, I loved arcade games so the saturn was the better system to own for me at that time.
The US retailers were keeping the Saturn going after they stopped releasing games in North America. X-Men vs Street Fighter, Dead or Alive, and Marvel Vs Capcom were selling out.
I think it's funny how you get labeled an "evangelist" when you're the minority enthusiast but everybody else is singing in the enormous choir Ie. "Nintendo is awesome, it's so great, Miyamoto is our savior, bless the perfect platform.".😆 Some interesting translation choices, I like the variety on display.😁 I know a lot of people aren't fans of FMV games but I think those translations are more done because they're possible since such games were in English originally that you can source voice tracks and such rather than the burden of creating them from scratch like those generous Bulk Slash contributors did. Mainly I can see the blue chroma key fringe a lot on SS, people always refer to green screen for everything now but they were blue bitd lol. Largely on SS FMV had an uphill battle with the MPEG card never leaving Japan, PS1 having onboard help by default, and video codecs never maturing more in it's shorter lifespan. Love to see some new algorithm takes on SS FMV using hindsight learned about the hardware and general FMV compression.🤔 DeathMask AKA Angel Devoid: Face of the Enemy has a certain 90s cyberpunk charm to it, the puzzles aren't great but the character and atmosphere are pretty good.🙂
It's funny, you mentioning people saying the Saturn was the worst of all time... I'm sure you've seen this phenomenon of kids saying "The Dreamcast was crap, it was a failure and put Sega out of business!" There are people out there who legitimately believe that the Dreamcast is what made Sega fold. 😂 Ahh well... ignorance is bliss.
For any Ogre Battle fans, I really recommend the Saturn version. The soundtrack sounds even better than on the Snes and the game actually tells you whether characters gain or lose charisma and alignment. It's probably the best version of Ogre Battle out there.
Something many don´t know is that the Japanese LOVED PC games in the 90s., yup, the japanese hardcore scene had like 2 main groups, one was the "arcade" gamers, hardcore in shoot em ups and fighting games., the other one were the PC gamers, and since the 80s they were all about the japanese PCs, FM Towns, PC-88 and 98, Sharp 68000, i remember an interview to the president of PC Engine that was issued in one EGM in 1993, and he said that they were very impressed by the FMV games and the graphic Tech of the western PC games, since MYST onwards., that explains why on the 3DO and Saturn there were so many asian FMV games and content
I know there are many ports of English translations for Dungeons and Dragons Collection, but I would love to see one for the Saturn. I know it's not really needed, I just would like an English translation in my collection with my Japanese copy.
DEATH MASK is a Cyberpunk MASTERPIECE, if limited run could bring it back it would be great, i fucking love that game, is so nostalgic, but i love the cyberpunk art of the game, a jewel from the FMV era
Fan Translations can be a big issue if you look up Retroware TV Policenauts you will find an 3 part video that looks at that. The only I have with it is the CD-R bands they renamed don't work for me.
So if a console has poor sales, but then a dedicated group of fans convince every retro gamer and their brother how great the console was, I wonder what that will do to prices? 😮
This is the best part of modern retro gaming! So many classics playable for the first time to us English tongued folk!

Love to see some new algorithm takes on SS FMV using hindsight learned about the hardware and general FMV compression.🤔
DeathMask AKA Angel Devoid: Face of the Enemy has a certain 90s cyberpunk charm to it, the puzzles aren't great but the character and atmosphere are pretty good.🙂
I'm so glad I'm not someone who is always chasing the latest technology and I can appreciate games made for older hardware.
Hell yeah! Now that Prisoners of Ice and Phantasmagoria are fully translated, somebody get on the two Dark Seed games! ☺️
I can't imagine they are far behind.
@Mister Supersonic don't forget the aspirin!
They don't call him the dang ol' SEGA LORD for nothin'! Thanks buddy! SEEEEEEEEEGAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
Very happy for Death Mask. I hope Dark Seed 1&2 will be translated too.
wow firepro looks effing gorgeous !
Loved my Saturn, SEGA 4EVER!
14:20 this rasslin game looks sick!
For any Ogre Battle fans, I really recommend the Saturn version. The soundtrack sounds even better than on the Snes and the game actually tells you whether characters gain or lose charisma and alignment. It's probably the best version of Ogre Battle out there.
Stellar assault looks like an example of a game that takes great advantage of saturn hardware
Phantasmagoria, and Angel Devoid were originally Western PC FMV games. It's kind of surprising they made it to Japan.
I'm still waiting for Sakura Wars 2's translation. I know they've finished the demo, but that's it right now.
Great video!
This intro is so faithful of the sony ponies and how they feel about xbox. Ride or die with the underdogs.
Fan Translations can be a big issue if you look up Retroware TV Policenauts you will find an 3 part video that looks at that. The only I have with it is the CD-R bands they renamed don't work for me.
My only wishlist game for translation is Cyber Doll.
So underrated and almost nobody talks about it.😢
And now I have so much custom pal cover to made 😆
I think it's great people put new life into the Saturn by taking these games and making them much more playable to a western audience
So if a console has poor sales, but then a dedicated group of fans convince every retro gamer and their brother how great the console was, I wonder what that will do to prices? 😮
Ha. No need to wonder. That side effect is well established.
This is fantastic news!
Wow. Ninja Penguin Manmaru looks as good as Jumping Flash did in the PS1.
I really hoped to see tengai makyo 3😢
Wait...
That's shadow squadron on the saturn...
I need to play this game.
