    Tip for an upgrade: get a small plastic bowl and glue small pebbles and rocks to it to make a in-ground pond for him

      Aquarium safe glue, because frogs absorb and breathe through their skin

    What do you feed your toad? I caught one yesterday that was in my house.

    • @hobbybiology
      @hobbybiology  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I feed him crickets and fruit flies which I get from the store, but I also use ear wigs I catch around my house, nasty, but he likes them. I made my own reserve of those.
      Let me know if you have any other questions :)

      My toad is the size of a thumbnail, lol. It has to be a baby.
      Do you know when it would know to eat?
      I added some spinach and shredded carrots to the terrarium, but I'm not sure if it touched it.

    • @hobbybiology
      @hobbybiology  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@princessl.d.g. I try to feed it with the tongs every other night, unless it looks hungry. He stands on his back legs against the glass sometimes, I feel like thats when he's telling me he's hungry lol.
      The fruit flies should serve well for it since it can snack on them passively, and they're good for smaller reptiles/amphibians.
      What I do is I keep a small plastic lid or tray in the tank with some mushed berries, this way when I add fruit flies to the tank they stay in there, but some definitely get out.

      Not really sure why you would say you can't take care of him if he's big. American toads don't really get that big. And the bigger they are, the less they eat. You need to feed them everyday when they're little but when they're big you can feed them a couple times a week and they'll be fine. If you're taking care of him now as a small toad you'll be able to care for him as a big toad.

    • @hobbybiology
      @hobbybiology  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I feed it crickets just about daily since most of the time, especially since it's grown a lot over the year. Fruit flies too.
      If you don't have access to either of those, what I did was collect earwigs from around my house and kept them in some containers with carboard and carrots.
      But easiest is obviously crickets, I'm sure they have them at the local pet store!

      Yes it is! It’s alive and well still after having it for 2 months. Eats straight from the tongs.
      I can tell he’s grown a little bit, at most an inch bigger/taller. It put on weight too, I can see it’s full belly sag more lol. Still a juvenile. Definitely grew though! (Despite being on the small side still)

      I really wish I knew there was such a big demand for American toads. I had 16 a couple months ago. I kept four but released the others back into the wild (they were morphs and it was time for them to be released). It killed me to have to let them go though because they were tadpoles when we found them. I would have much rather had known they were being raised by people instead of fending for themselves in the wild.

      I’m VERY curious as to what kind of frog you have and how the setup looks….. because most frogs prefer a mix of land and water. If you’d ever be willing to share through google drive, i’d love to give tips where i can. Plus a white frog sounds fascinating!
