Michal Viktorin well then if it ever escapes (I find that over the years I’ve raised toads that the more hyper ones which are smaller are little escape artists.) Meanwhile Indiana be like: You know all those native species that are harmless for you to keep? You can't keep those as pets. But things that are known to be invasive? You can keep those as pets.
Yeah a lot of states have interesting amphibian laws. Like for mole salamanders, it depends on the state because in some states the native species isn't allowed to be kept while it's flipped in other states. I think it's mostly done to encourage people not to take from the wild and reduce native populations. But it's also frustrating because you just know people are releasing their unwanted amphibians to the wild. That last bit is why in California you can't have any species of ambystoma, they're really concerned about interbreeding between non-native tigers and the native California Tiger which is endangered. Laws man... haha
Well yes, of course. But by allowing the invasives as pets means more could enter the wild through the pet trade, which is what I'm frustrated about. By allowing invasives in as pets and natives out there's a higher chance that those invasives could be dumped into the wild. But on the flip side, by allowing native species as pets it could encourage more wild caught animals to end up in the pet trade. So there's not really a good win/win scenario. Besides like, buying from a breeder. Still doesn't solve the problem if you buy from a breeder and the species is native to your state and you have laws banning the possession of native species as pets, then you're stuck with your only option to buy non native captive breds. Also if you're looking for a pet, even a wild caught invasive might not be possible. Some states have laws that require you to kill any invasive you catch or trap and you cannot take it home or transport it alive.
Thank you! I just found a three legged toad in the wild and the poor thing could barely even walk. I couldn’t leave her but wasn’t sure if it was legal to take them from the wild or how to take care of them, this helps a lot!

I love toads and frogs. In the summer I love finding toads outside my front door. We had a few toads that lived under the deck at my mom's house when I was younger. We'd always see them hanging out right outside the door. We'd play with them for a little while, then release them and they never went very far. They're so cute. ^^
We have a pond in our backyard that wild toads (and the turtles from the neighborhood) visit every year to lay their eggs. We once took some tadpoles inside as turtle food, but she didn't eat them and so we had baby toads jumping around the living room a few weeks later. The cat loved it, I wasted an entire afternoon to catch them all.
Thank you so much, I caught a small toad that's been hanging around my house for the past week and was dying to snag her as a pet and learning how easy to care for they are and that wild caught toads are able to be kept in captivity I'll probably keep her! I have a bearded dragon and he's pretty big so the smaller insects he usually doesnt care for would be perfect food for her!
Hey, thank you so much for this video! My friend and I have been wanting to keep toads for a long time. Last night, we were walking around his property when we spotted two American toads who were trapped in a well and extremely malnourished. They were weak from treading water for so long, and one of them is so skinny her body width is slightly thinner than that or her head. (These guys are usually way fat and live around my friend’s patio in gutter pipes and other little hides, feeding on bugs that swarm under the patio lights.) We currently have them housed in a 36”x18”x18” bin with holes drilled into the sides and a locking lid. They have mealworms and beetles dusted with multivitamin powder, Eco Earth to burrow in, a shallow dish with conditioned water, and a bark hide. We originally weren’t sure if we would keep them after we nursed them to health, but now we’re really considering keeping them and moving one of them into another 36”x18”x18” bin with the same commodities later.
Lol !! My daughter "saved" a bb toad from being hit by a golf cart at our camping and ... here I am, proud owner!! I have to admit the first month and half was hard, as several pet store told me it was way too small to be fed cricket and would most likely die ... so after a couple of orange 🍊 and fruit flies all around my kitchen, Lolly is now big enough for crickets!!! The girl at the pet store was so chocked to see me back, she told me ; I never thought that you'd make it (it's our first one), so now lolly is nice and healthy, very happy, and I actually really enjoy watching her chasing cricket, I actually think that she recognize me because she comes everytime I go close to her terrarium and I swear she's (or he) is looking at me !!
Janna T. Whoops, my bad, kinda the same thing if y'all are binge watching though ;) kinda like a tv show or series. You get to watch Emily and her animals grow and develop together :) that's what I mean
I just found a 1/2" toad in my entrance way. Very unusual as it's a very dark almost chocolate brown with orange highlights. I haven't kept one since I was a kid but I think I'll try keeping this little guy at least over the winter. Great video and I learned a lot!
I had a Fowler’s toad who wasn’t eating (she last ate the 14th, I feed them every 2-3 days) I tried feeding her everyday after she didn’t eat for the next feeding, but she wouldn’t. During this time she was still hopping about and digging and chilling in the little water dish they have. Today I found her dead in her enclosure. We’ve had he for about a year and a half (she was a wild toad at first but she wondered into a building and we kept her). I just wanna know what happened to her. I’ve looked up what could have happened and most of them just say “it’s nature” but I just can’t except that as an answer. Any help would be appreciated.
My friend found a toad today in college, he was almost dead and completely dried up and could barely move, I've been rehydrating him and I'm taking him home where I have the supplies to take care of him and nurse him back to health.
Roslyn Baldonado If you really do your research, you’ll find that snakes are actually very inexpensive and convenient to supply for. If your getting a reasonably sized ground dwelling snake, like ball pythons, in my opinion it is perfectly fine to keep them in a large bin, similar to the one she houses the toads in, with aspen or cypress bedding. Give them a constant supply of water, and, especially when in shed, a humidity box. You can use a heat pack that connects to some sort of thermostat under the bedding to keep warm. You will also need to feed frozen thawed mice pups when the snake is young and slowly transition into larger mice, small rats, etc as it gets larger. If you don’t want to feed mice, you can get an egg eating snake, which eat finch and quail eggs, just make sure you have a source where you can consistently get them from. Hope this is helpful!
Thanks, I am going to try and rescue a little toad in my back yard. She was born with one floppy back leg. For now I am giving her a little corner of my garden.
Caught one from the wild as a kid and kept it as a summer pet once! These little buggers are walking stomachs! Thankfully mine didn't get obese despite me being young and not fully knowing what I was doing, but well fed it certainly was. The thing I remember the most is how quickly (and how well) it tamed. The first week it acted like you'd expect a wild toad to, being afraid of me and trying to escape my hand whenever I tried to grab it. After about a week though it mellowed down to the point where it no longer fled from me at all, and would allow me to pick it up at will and even ate from my hand. I released it back in the forest by fall so it could find a spot to hibernate through winter. Now I know better than to take things from the wild of course, but I'd say if your only two choices are getting a wild one from your backyard or buying a wild caught one your pet store is selling... maybe its better to take it from the wild yourself than to spend your money to encourage a pet store which likely gets many of its animals from pet mills. Ethical pet stores are unfortunately not the norm, though there are good ones out there who even refuse to sell certain animals like kittens and puppies because they are so overly bred while shelters are crowded with them.
oh, how much I love toads. They're so cute, and after watching this video, I'm confident to try to ask and work something out, I just have a few questions: 1: _Can I put the toad container by/near the window? Or, for them to understand night and day, they just look for "bright and dark". It's not really a important question because it does get bright then dark in my room, but the place I could put them (not by the window) are usually dark places._ 2: _How often do I clean the enclosure or the bedding?_
We’re on a short road trip and I just found a hurt toad I’m going to keep her comfy till he leave and hopefully my mom will let me take her home so I can get her a proper home :)
From their natural diet such as hard shell bugs. In captivity we usually feed them with limited variety so they develop deficiencies without supplements.

But it's also frustrating because you just know people are releasing their unwanted amphibians to the wild. That last bit is why in California you can't have any species of ambystoma, they're really concerned about interbreeding between non-native tigers and the native California Tiger which is endangered. Laws man... haha
ktkat218 They want the invasive ones out of the wild
Margaret what I meant was that I can get species that are invasive or have the potential to become invasive from pet stores, but I get your point
Some states have laws that require you to kill any invasive you catch or trap and you cannot take it home or transport it alive.
ktkat218 we have the same thing in Alberta, Canada. No bullsnakes, western or eastern hognoses, tiger salamanders. There are a few more.

I love toads and frogs. In the summer I love finding toads outside my front door. We had a few toads that lived under the deck at my mom's house when I was younger. We'd always see them hanging out right outside the door. We'd play with them for a little while, then release them and they never went very far. They're so cute. ^^
I love how she keeps talking as her toad is about to leap off the table lol
We have a pond in our backyard that wild toads (and the turtles from the neighborhood) visit every year to lay their eggs. We once took some tadpoles inside as turtle food, but she didn't eat them and so we had baby toads jumping around the living room a few weeks later. The cat loved it, I wasted an entire afternoon to catch them all.
My cat brought be a frog once, we don't even have any ponds or body of water near. Still, he was so proud of himself .
Do you still have her?
@@SolidRebeI I do! She’s a chonky lady and is pretty fond of handling at this point :D
TOADLETTES ARE THE CUTEST THINGS IVE EVER SEEN oh my god
If you dont keep them, *don't release them back into the wild* they can introduce diseases into the wild...

Great video! Super informative, as always 😉
I wanted to have a pet snake but I don't have any stuff for it .....
Lex Bell thx!
Roslyn Baldonado Np, just remember, I’m not an expert, it’s important to do your own research before making any commitments 😉
Lex Bell ok! Thx again!!

“Please?? :(“ “LOOVE IIT D:
My poor little fat toad that comes to my front porch every night was massacred by a raccoon. I now hate raccoons and want them to go extinct
When we are camping wild toads like to hide in our pile of wood
My brother just caught a toad and is keeping it. Was looking a video like this up last night! Perfect timing 😊

oh, how much I love toads. They're so cute, and after watching this video, I'm confident to try to ask and work something out, I just have a few questions:
1: _Can I put the toad container by/near the window? Or, for them to understand night and day, they just look for "bright and dark". It's not really a important question because it does get bright then dark in my room, but the place I could put them (not by the window) are usually dark places._
2: _How often do I clean the enclosure or the bedding?_
Do not put animal enclosures near or directly across from a window. The light can intensify heat in the enclosure and kill the animals.
