    Overall very cool, and impressive results. I went with a similar style of false bottom (just with dropped ceiling egg crate) but my next one will be more traditional because I found the springtails can't get through the weed block fabric and even if I had used window screen there's no gravel or hydroton for them to colonize. I did use the exact same mini egg crate aquarium divider for the back panel I built the foam and bark structure on, so it's possible to change it when I redo the tank in a couple of years or whatever.
    Not trying to sound hypercritical, I understand you did the false bottom that way to accommodate the water feature with the minimal amount of grit getting down to the pump level.

    • @alternateaquatics
      @alternateaquatics  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hey thanks really glad you enjoyed it!
      I had thought about that, but since I had to cut into the divider fabric and added the black lava rock around the water feature….they have access to water and even all the way to the false bottom. I’ve seen them down there through the glass 👀

    Is there a viable thing to feed them aside from fruit flies? I tried those little monsters once and they had escapees and some even developed the ability to fly.
    I really want poison dart frogs again, but I don't think it's possible unless there's something else that they can reliably eat.
    (Pinhead crickets are also out of the question. Their parents die way too fast and the development cycle is too long.)

    • @alternateaquatics
      @alternateaquatics  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah they’re unfortunately a staple to their diet. I also feed them springtails and mini purple isopods. If you cycle your fruit fly cultures you can avoid them growing wings. However there will always be escapes lolb

    • @LarsLarsen77
      @LarsLarsen77 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can feed them baby crickets too. But they smell terrible and are a huge pain compared to fruit flies. You also have to use them up right away because they'll get bigger and then the frogs can't eat them.

  • @GrrrlyGamer881
    @GrrrlyGamer881 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +34

    That was a dust mask (n95) you put on to spray the foam, which is a chemical. If you're actually worried about breathing in the fumes you need to get a respirator that has cartridges graded for chemical fumes. If you can smell something through your mask it's not protecting you

      @alternateaquatics the wet moss mix is a game changer. I was looking for a way to add moss seamlessly and couldn't find out how. I do have a couple of questions. Would you recommend stabbing a hot needle through the foam and into the planters to allow water to drain out? I don't know how well the water would be able to exit the planter with foam all around it without holes? Also, this wasn't part of the video, but I figured I'd ask; would you recommend the Repashy vitamins for Mantellas as well? I've just been feeding them fruitflies without any additional vitamins, as the person who sold them to me said they just needed the fruitflies.

    • @alternateaquatics
      @alternateaquatics  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If you’re adding the planters directly into the foam, yes you can stab into it to help the water drain, all of my planter cups were positioned so the they butted up to aquarium filter foam, this allows them to drain without problems and the filter foam allows for roots to grow down to the drainage layer.

    • @alternateaquatics
      @alternateaquatics  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I’m honestly not sure which type of vitamins mantellas require but I would bet the certainly need some vitamins. I’d do a little more research online for that because proper vitamin Dusting is important for most frogs and reptiles etc

      @alternateaquatics i have one last question. I was thinking of making the bottom part of my terrarium a fish tank for small fish. I was thinking of using a stainless steel dish drying rack to prop up the bottom and give the fish about 24"x18"x7" space. What are your thoughts on this idea? The fish I'd put under there would be very small and I'd put a water filter next to the pump

    Love the plant variety and all the space available for your new friends! I do wonder how you're gaining access to the pump for service and cleaning. Probably from above? Have you encountered any issues like algae build-up? I've built two fully bioactive enclosures with misting systems. I've wanted to build a vivarium with a water feature for a long time but I worry about the amount of time that could go into maintenance. Some months, my freshwater aquarium requires a good deal of maintenance. It depends on the shrimp population. When their numbers naturally dip, I have to take the pump apart for regular cleaning so it continues to function properly. Rather than just maintaining the water and external filter system. I'd like to know the realistic maintenance time so I don't take on more than what is practical. Working full-time and and caring for 10 enclosures, plus my cricket, dubia, isopod, and springtail colonies is currently manageable. I do worry about taking on something that requires more time than I planned for, leaving less time to give the rest of my critters the proper care they deserve.

    • @alternateaquatics
      @alternateaquatics  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey thanks for stopping by! I haven’t had to do any maintenance on it yet. I’ve had the one for a year. I think the small snails I have in the water keeps the algae down. Also I’m not adding any food to the water so there’s less nutrients for algae growth

      Hey thanks a lot!! The amount of frogs you can keep together really depends on the species. There’s a lot of different ones with different needs for size and tank mates. I would not recommend mixing different locals/species. A big risk is they will bully each other or inbreed.

The water pump is at the bottom and pumps water to the top which flows back though the filter foam not visible

      Could you move straight to the substrate barrier? Or the foam is 100% needed?

    • @alternateaquatics
      @alternateaquatics  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The foam does not get moldy, but if it did the springtails would eat the mold. All the little micro organisms in the tank are constantly cleaning all that out, the waste they leave behind gets used by the roots from the plants. You could skip the aquarium foam if you want to, but you would want to make sure you’ve got some separation between the water line and the substrate or that will start to stink eventually.
      You could do the aquarium divider grid, put the substrate barrier on it directly and layer it with some lava rock or clay pellets before adding substrate. But you definitely need to make sure you’re not letting the actual substrate sit in water.

    Why not build a trickle filter in the corner with the pump for the carbon, laying carbon (which exhausts) under the substrate is self defeating no? Will you not have to tear it apart to replace the carbon.

    • @alternateaquatics
      @alternateaquatics  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It’s definitely something to consider! There’s also activated carbon in the substrate which I do switch out/add to once a year.
      That being said the activated carbon was more there to help with the Initial cycling of the tank. Once the tank has cycled after a few months and it find a good balance (which it has now) there’s no maintenance other than misting it with distilled water

    😂😂😂 Ja, die Party geht ab (German here). I have a question. At 15:22, does the silicone stick to the tube? I´m facing a similar situation with my terrarium build, I need to seal a gap between a tube and the background to prevent water from seeping through into the background material, but I have no idea if the silicone will actually stick and bond with the tube. I havealready noticed silicone not sticking to some plastic material, so I´m afraid I won´t be able to seal the tube opening. Any ideas anyone?
