    Excellent tips. I'm in a very similar boat but for my finesse spinning I like 6'10" medium heavy w/ fast tip - but I fill the spool completely with fluorocarbon.
    The advantage is that I don't have to tie leaders on, the disadvantage is that when the line twist gets excessive it will jump the spool pretty easily... So some days I love this setup and other days I absolutely hate it 🤣👍

    I absolutely condone your two-rod method! However... three rods is out of the question! Shame! 🤣👍
    Jk I usually sneak a pan fish rod in the truck as well...

    @samuelwarden6285 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That twist towards the end 🤣. I used to be the same way and take several and only use a couple. I narrowed mine down to a medium fast baitcaster,medium light spinning, and a light spinning for creek floats. Nothing worst than getting your rods caught up in trees during a float or when your fighting a fish. 👊👍

    Good advice. I have 2 St. Croix 5'6 rods that I love to use out of my kayak in smaller waters. I feel like I am slightly more accurate with the shorter rod and can still throw plenty far for the river. I do use longer rods for bigger water. I just got a new swimbait rod and I still need to catch a fish with it!

    All my life I used a spinning rod set up. when I turned 40 I was gave a bait cast reel. I fought with that dang thing for about a year. after I got to where I could cast it without making a mess I got to liking it over the spinning reels. But this year I am going back to using some spinning reels again. I bought two new spinning reels and rods. One is a Shimano Syncopate Spinning Reel and the other one is a Mitchell 300. Both cheap reels but I think they are going to work just fine. I still have my first rod and reel set up. got it when I was 8 years old. it's a old Mitchell 300 reel and a yellow eagle claw rod. There both 50 years old and still work. I am sure the rod would break if I hung a nice size fish on it.

    Like that approach and as a fisherman that does a bunch of wading trips I have to be weight conscious. Primarily I have 2 in my rod holster, 6 foot spinning rod for topwater and a 6 foot or 6'6 to fish jigs and swim baits. For bigger rivers they're either 6'6 medium spinning or 1 is a 6'7 medium fast all with braided line.

      There are so many different species, and techniques for the same species. You gotta have at least a dozen if you fish for lots of kinds of fish. I have a bunch of Ugly Stiks and Penns and Pfluger reels from ultra light to a big surf rod. And I need more..

    Lol I really over pack everywhere. I’ve brought 7 rods and all my tackle for 12 kayak floats in the last two weeks and caught all my fish on the same rod and same lure except for maybe 4. 😂

    Love the videos, I binge them all the time 😅 I don't have a kayak but I love to wade creeks and stuff after watching your videos. I take a ultralight micro series shakespeare that never let's me down, and I have a medium light shimano symmetre that never let's me down either. Sometimes I'll bank fish and I'll use my lews baitcaster on my vengeance pole or my ugly stick gx2. I usually just wacky rig though cause I can't afford lures 😂

  • @chuckdaddyo

    There are so many options out there, you know that. It boils down to, like lures, what are you confident and comfortable throwing? Me, I like a 6’10 medium extra fast rod for finesse fishing paired with a 6’6” medium light last for all the small pan fish lures, both with spinning reels. Most of the moving water I fish is pretty small. Anyway, thanks for your thoughts. I really like the second channel.

    It all depends where and how you fish, i have more 5'6" and 6' because i fish from shore in a heavily wooded area. I also have 6'6" and 7' for open areas.

    Great video, John. Although I have been freshwater fishing for many years, I still consider myself a novice as I don’t get out as much as I would like. I have watched many YT videos on choosing the “best” rods, reels, lines and lures. I seen many TH-camrs and professionals and they all have different opinions which makes me believe that it all comes down to personal preference. I don’t have a lot of money and my most expensive rod is about $75. I have picked up rods at sporting goods stores and they feel great but I am not buying a $200 rod and a $100 reel for weekend fishing. Typically, most rods have three parameters: length, power and action. However, there are no standards between different manufacturers for power and action. And trying to figure out which rod is best with different baits makes my head spin (is that a pun?). My un-professional opinion is a spinning rod is the “best” all-around rod, my personal preference. BTW, I started ultralight fishing mostly due to your videos. Thanks.

  • @matthewlindsey7717
    @matthewlindsey7717 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That's really similar to the two rods I take with me, only difference is the brand. Now when I'm fishing from the bank it's a different story I'll take how ever many I can carry lol

    Check out Ugly Stik Lites when you need another rod. I have 2, 1 spinning and 1 baitcasting, and they're nice. Those are the 2 I'd probably take in a kayak unless I need a lighter rod. I have a 7' ultralight Ugly Stik that's hard to leave. And another medium action GX2. Dang, it's hard to choose. 3 would make choosing easier 😂.

  • @sed6

    I got my first baitcaster last year. After fighting and figuring out birds nests I've gotten decent at it. That said it's easy to still screw up a cast, bird's nest it and watch your expensive lure go flying out of sight.

  • @flysubcompact
    @flysubcompact ปีที่แล้ว

    Well thought out, but because I'm too dumb to figure out baitcasters (I've bought, tried and given away two), i go with one medium spinning rig and a spincast. That spincast reel is a Zebco Z03. It's a suped up 33 with brass guts and real bearings. Three puckups insures you don't miss a hook set. Simple, bombproof and no birds nests in moving water.

    The only time I go out with only 2 rods is if I'm wading and fishing for steelhead and salmon and I need to be very mobile. Otherwise, I bring much more gear when I'm fishing from the bank. I would rather pick up another rod and reel combo and keep fishing than spend all of my time changing lures!

    Been out of fishing about 20 years then got started back a little over 10 years ago, then had a catastrophic work injury ( laid up in bed for almost a year) Sold my boat and all fish and hunting to raise money. Now finally I'm able to start to be able to get out again. I have about 6 rod and reels not counting my 2 catfish rigs and a bunch lures l have gotten to replace my fishing equipment.
    I am the same way I have 2 setup I take with me most of the time and 5 or 6 lures. Then 1 extra depending on if I'm ultralight, cranking or pitching a frog or creature bait. Its funny be out of fishing for all this time get all this new gear but like old use just 2 rods and a handful of lures.🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣🛶🛶
