  • We ate YOUR Malaysian food suggestions for 24 hours!
    The other day, we asked you, our viewers, to provide us suggestions of your favourite foods in Malaysia to eat, whether it be Malay, Chinese or Indian cuisine.
    We had a bunch of people asking us to try their favourites, and especially during Eid, some of the unique items that only come around once a year! Eager to try some new foods and always willing to put ourselves out of our comfort zones for your entertainment, we took to the streets of Cheras to find as many of these dishes as possible! Will we find a new favourite?
    Thank you for all your suggestions, if you'd like to see us do this video again and try more foods, leave the video a like, and share it around!
    We'd also love to see which was your favourite food that we ate, so leave a comment, we love to have a chat in there!
    See you in the next video,
    Jacob and Emma

      When you try Malaysian foods based on your subscribers recommendation, bear in mind that different stall will give you different experience. If you had them wrong or not so tasty the first time, try and try again at other location. You'll find the really good one sooner or later.

    I am curious... who in their right mind when asked on how to eat lemang, the first two things came to their mind were sugar and milk. I would have never thought of that combination when asked on the spot... well maybe for some people, that's their two top priorities above rendang or serunding (floss - chicken or beef).
    FYI, Malaysian 'main dish' often comes with its common sidekick, like Nasi Dagang for example, you can have it with any side dish curry but the sidekick for Nasi Dagang is mackerel tuna curry. Nasi Tomato sidekick ayam masak merah. Patin Tempoyak sidekick sambal hitam. Lemang and ketupat sidekick rendang and serunding - it even repeated in local Hari Raya songs for decades, so that's why when I heard of milk or sugar, well maybe since you are foreigner and he is kind enough to suggest something you are familiar with and can't take spicy food 😅

      We thought the same, so many comments have said milk and sugar is crazy, so we think he probably looked at us and didn't want to suggest rendang 😅 We LOVE rendang though so if he had suggested it, we would have had to find some! We imagine it could taste out of this world! Thanks for the heads up on the food sidekicks, that's given us some good suggestions of things to try! 👍

      To be fair to the seller, lemang dip into sugar taste amazing. It has been my favourite since my childhood up to my 50's today. Having said that however, for him to highlight just sugar and milk(?) to go with the lemang while completely listed out rendang is unforgivable. It's one of the top 3 sins to do so....

    The lemang price is base on the size. Eid we got a very small one for RM15. You can eat anyway u want, plain, curry, rendang floss, sambal. But usually during raya is with rendang. The best part is when its hot, and the end part is still milky, chared and soft.

    Lemang - glutinous/sticky rice
    Nasi impit - boiled compact white rice
    Nasi dagang, nasi kerabu (kerabu means raw herbs. Healthiest type of meal), laksam is a speciality meal/dish from Kelantan & Terengganu. Hence most restaurants run by these folks are closed from day one Syawal/Eid/Raya up to 2 weeks
    Lontong, Masak Lodeh is made of boiled compact white rice, eaten with veggies cooked in coconut gravy, rendang, coconut flakes, potato cutlet & sambal.
    Soto - chicken/beef herbal soup. Full of lemongrass, ginger, coriander seeds, star anise, cinnamon bark & fennel aroma. Again the main star is nasi impit (boiled compressed white rice), with lots of boiled/raw beansprouts, toasted nuts, fried tofu & potato cutlets. Be always careful of the accompanied black chilli sauce 🥵🥵
    Laksa Asam (literally means tamarind fish soup). Penang is famous for Laksa Asam, Johor laksa is different from other states because eaten with spaghetti & hands😂😂.
    There is Penang Asam laksa, Terengganu laksam, Johor laksa & Sarawak laksa. These laksa maybe an acquired taste for you because the main star is fish. The fishy smell might turn ones appetite off😅😂
    So there you go. We have 14 states & each state, there is each speciality meal or dish. Happy eating😊😊

Few of my favorite dishes are nasi minyak and kurma ayam (ghee rice with chicken korma), nasi tomato and ayam masak merah (tomato rice and chicken cooked in tomato and chili paste), spaghetti bolognaise. Of course, there are plenty more dishes that I can cook, it's not an excuse, since my last 2 depressions, my cooking doesn't taste as good as before, I tend to use more of msg and granules to compensate for the lacking of good natural taste of my home made meals.

I think the milk and sugar suggestion was based off a first take looking at us, we aren't offended by it at least 😂 beef rendang definitely sounds like a winner! 🏆 That would be such a lovely gesture if you were able to! With ingredients like msg becoming easier to buy and readily available, I guess it's easier to make shortcuts, but might compromise on natural flavour! I can't really speak though, I'm no master chef 😂

      @@DisappearforDays for RM18 the lemang price for us justified. It is normal price nowadays. Lemang is a special dish that only served during festive season although you still could find some special restaurant doing it all year around. Furthermore it is not easy to make lemang, I mean to handle/cook it in front of fire for 2-3 hours because t cooked traditionally, not everyone can do that. So we not only pay for the food but also for their tough job. A good cooked lemang can be preserved for several days without refrigerated, just reheat the bamboo on fire or the lemang in the microwave oven before served.

Try ask the owner/operator tel that you want to film it, but no need to wait in front of the fire for 2 hours though. There are several type of lemang, the normal lemang like the one you ate, using glutinous rice, coconut water, salt wrapped over by young banana leaf inside bamboo. There are other using other kind of leaf as substitutes of banana leaf. In state of Perak they also make lemang jagung or corn lemang. They mix corn with glutinous rice. Then there is also not very popular brown/black glutinous rice lemang which is brown in colour.
      And don't be shock if you find rendang also quite pricey nowadays but worth to try while on this festive season.

    For me, asam pedas chicken/beef is weird and unacceptable, It's like pineapple on pizza for Italian people 😂. It's southern people thing, but northern people asam pedas is always fish and the fish must be fried first. For us the whole asam pedas broth don't match with chicken/beef, it's for the fish.

    • @DisappearforDays
      @DisappearforDays  13 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@DisappearforDays For us in the north, lime is always for the fish/seafood to get rid of the fishy smell, it is not for chicken/beef/gourmet.
      One tip for you guys, not all dishes need to be mixed together, despite some people might say "mix it all together", it just a mistranslation. What they really mean is "eat this with that". Example, eat crackers with the rice, not mix it with rice. Sometimes I find it funny when foreigners just take it literally mixing sambal with the rice when eating nasi lemak or mixing everything in nasi kerabu.... 😁

    • @DisappearforDays
      @DisappearforDays  9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Ahhh no, that's what we did with the Nasi Kerabu when we tried. We just tossed it all together 😂😅

    • @MizanQistina
      @MizanQistina 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@DisappearforDays If we mix everything with the rice, the original taste of the rice will be lost 😂
      Side dishes, sauces, crackers, soup and whatever are just to compliment the rice, not overpower it. The main dish is the rice, others are add ons.

      @@DisappearforDays Lemang has a neutral taste. So yeah, I guess you can pair it with anything. Sometimes people eat it with sweet grated coconut. The rendang is a common favorite. I sometimes eat it with salted butter.
