DRIVEN: New Kia Niro EV. Is the replacement for the eNiro still a brilliant family electric car?

  • The Kia eNiro as been a huge seller for Kia since its launch and has a devoted following in the UK. Fabled for its efficiency and loved for its affordable price, the Niro remains one of the best all-rounders you can buy.
    And now, nearly four years after the original arrived, Kia is launching a new version. Out goes the eNiro nameplate and in comes the Niro EV badge, along with a host of detail and engineering updates, the biggest of which is a new set of underpinnings. The new Niro is now built on what Kia calls its K platform, which sits underneath a host of Kia and Hyundai products.
    The Niro Electric has a fractionally larger battery pack at 64.8kWh (0.8kWh bigger than the old pack) and, bizarrely, a slightly slower rapid charge system. Where the eNiro was capable of DC charging at a maximum speed of 77kW, the new version maxes out at 72kW. While this seems something of a backward step. Still, a WLTP range of 287 miles makes it a very attractive proposition for the price.

    Don't like the trend of moving rear signals to the bumper. Generally that's not the first place I look at a vehicle in front of me, a bit too below eye level.

      Blame the Americans for starting that trend. It’s illegal over there to have rear lights hidden on the tailgate when it’s open. So many manufacturers add them in 2 places, and that carries over to styling cues in other models.

    I was lucky to get to a preview with Kia, Lincoln, to see this car in the flesh and it is a great improvement over my Kia E Niro. All the little things that I think it would be nice to have are on the new car. Cable storage in the front, bonnet struts to keep it open, powered tailgate, centred charge port, to start. The seats were more comfortable, space increased inside and it looks modern. Still has proper buttons for the more used buttons.
    It is great to see it finally driven on UK roads and to hear the improvements have continued, quieter, better handling, delivery of power.
    The other trick not shown is that you can summon the car forwards out of a tight car parking space, using the key fob, and the V2L (vehicle to load) that includes a UK Plug just below the centre of the rear seats.
    A great review

    Another great looking car from Kia, they really are turning out impressive cars at the moment that are very individual. The only slightly disappointing aspect is the jump in price over the outgoing version - the EV world is not short of premium models, whilst truly affordable cars that offer good range and practicality like the previous e-Nero did, are thin on the ground. That said, this is a great car and I think Kia have done a fantastic job in turning a fairly frumpy, anonymous design into something genuinely interesting and desirable.

    Excellent review, thank you. I look forward to this vehicle being available in Canada for me to review. I owned a 2019 Niro EV for 3 years and I am very curious to experience the differences, and to put it beside my EV6 for comparison because I saw lots of "EV6-ness" in the interior.

    With which setting do you have this cockpit view, no video says anything about it?
    It doesn't appear in most videos anymore, is it something only the prototype has?

    The builder for the new Niro is now live on the Kia UK website. The contrasting C-pillar is only available on the top trim (and has a 150-pound upcharge). The gray trim around the wheels and along the side is only available on the EV (not other versions).
    While it is not as sexy at the EV6, I'd consider it as a more affordable way to get into an EV, with great practicality and lots of desirable features. I do like the distinctiveness of the contrasting C-pillar (blue body with black blade would be my pick) but don't expect to see too many configured that way.

That is, a way to fold down a middle section to allow long objects to be passed through from the boot WITHOUT losing the main left or right rear seats? I'm amazed how few cars offer this. I have an old Golf TDi which I want to replace with an EV and can't find many with this useful option outside of VW's own range.

    It was great that you clarified the 'headline-grabbing' reduced charging speed issue that has been brought up time-and-time-again by other, less EV-experienced reviewers, Wookie. 😇
    Like you said, it's not always about the outright kW speed, it's also about how long that speed is maintained throughout a charging cycle.
    The Audi E-Tron SUV does with 'only' 150kW charging speed, but it keeps that pretty much all the way to 85% State of Charge so it's topped-up and on it's way much more quickly than the 'headline' figure would suggest. 👍

      You're right the price difference is shocking and it depends how long you keep the car. If you're like me and buy outright for he life of the car then go full electric.
      The hybrid is the worst of both worlds in that when it's in electric it's lugging around a great lump of petrol engine and when it's in petrol driven mode it's carting around an electric motor. More complexity equals more to go wrong in later years whereas there's very little maintenance required on an ev and they keep going forever. 👍

    Since it’s efficient, the e-Niro might be quite a good choice if it comes with a tow hook.
    By the way, why would a home charger come with a standard 7kW? Is that a UK thing?

    • @Brian-om2hh
      @Brian-om2hh ปีที่แล้ว

      Most home chargers in the UK are 7kw. The vast majority of UK electric car owners who charge at home, will do so while they sleep during the night hours. That is when UK energy supply companies offer much reduced costs for charging. The costs are usually around 25% of the standard daytime rate. This happens because there is huge excess capacity in the UK grid during the night. And because power stations can't be switched off, the energy companies need to create a demand at a time of much lower demand. Some homeowners have heating systems which are able to store energy during the night and release it during the day, again for cost reasons..... Here in the UK, very few cars come new with a towing hitch. You almost always have to have one fitted afterwards.

    Bigest let down is the lack of increased charge speed. Now in 2022 and its lower than the outgoing model at 72Kwh , really should be at least 150Kwh these days. Oh and the Price £42000 really May as well save 4K get the mid range ev6 and get better looks , recharge speed and a better blue.

    Hi, I much prefer the new front design. The old one looked fake to me with all those dimples - almost like it had a disease. I think the charge location is a good attempt at being compatible with assorted charging cable positioning - something that could really do with some standardisation. USB sockets are much more useful than just for playing games - please don't get too flippant with the commentary. I think I'd go for the silver side panels. White looks wrong on this car and I personally do not like the black option but that's me.

  • @kornenator

    It's genuinely baffling to me why they think it's a good idea to design that odd shaped screen console in the middle, and then slap a much smaller screen on it. It looks hideous, makes the whole interior look cheap. And it's not just a Kia issue, so many manufacturers do this design with the asymmetrical bezels thicker than a Heathrow runway.

    • @Jaw0lf
      @Jaw0lf 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have the Kia E Niro and to be honest the charge time is not a problem as after driving 200 miles I am ready for a break and food. This normally takes 30-40 mins, so back to 80%. I have never found time is wasted, waiting for charging due to the stops you need! I agree that faster would be nicer, but also all chargers I have used have been 50kWh.

    • @chrischild3667
      @chrischild3667 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Jaw0lf Yea that's a really fair point. The efficiency of the thing means you're unlikely to drain it and then need another 200+miles of range unless you're doing serious mileage.
      Hmm you may have helped me to change my mind about this. I'm an etron owner so as you can imagine I'm used to low efficiency, high charge speed. The niro ev could be the replacement when my current lease ends.
      Also in winter the pre-conditioning en route to charger should mean it performs well consistently, if only at 70kW.

      @Chris Child - I did wonder the same but then realised it's just not a big deal for me. I have a Kia Soul at the moment and, looking through my records, found that, excluding a week's holiday in Devon when I charged several times, I have only public rapid charged the car 4 times all year so far in 2022. And its range is longer than my ability to sustain concentration without rest stops to eat and pee.
