  • Hey whats going on guys! If you didn't know, there was a offroad version of the Hummer H3 offered when it was new. In this video I talk about that factory option called the "adventure package". Let me know if you have any questions in the comments down below!

    Probably a stupid question but is it possible or even worth it to install the adventure package on a standard H3 if I could get the parts?

    • @4lowmode
      @4lowmode  4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      It is possible to do that, but it will cost some money. I estimate $2800-$4000 for the parts. The two main things that you that make up the adventure package are the transfer case and axles. The transfer case you would need is the Borg Warner 4494 NR6 Transfer Case. If you can find one used they usually go for around $900 to $1300.
      When it comes to the axles you could either get both or just the rear. The adventure package axles and base axles don’t have any gearing differences in them, they are the same, except for the fact the adventure package axle has that locking differential you are looking for.
      One important thing to note however is there is a difference between the all the i5 H3s (3.5 and 3.7) and the Alpha V8 (5.3). The alpha has a different gear ratio which is 4.10 and the i5 has 4.56. For this reason you need to get H3 axles that has the same gear ratio as your H3. So if you have a i5 H3, get axles that come out of a i5 H3 and not a Alpha.
      You can find a rear H3 axle with the adventure package a lot easier and cheaper out of the two. Usually they go in the price range from somewhere $500-$800 used. Just make sure you're buying an actual H3 axle because many of the Chevy Colorado Axles will have an entirely different gear ratio such as a 3.73 instead of a 4.56. The actual name for the Axle is the AAM (GM) 8.6 10 Bolt Rear Axle.
      The front axle in H3 is definitely more tricky to find and costly. These axles were only made for two years (2009-2010) in at that time GM wasn’t selling many H3s. What you are looking for is a AAM 7.6" IFS in Cast Iron. If it is made out of aluminum, it is not gonna be 2009-2010. It will be a 2006-08. Finding these front axles can be difficult at times but I have seen them go for $1000 to $2000
      So you are possibly looking at $2800-$4000. I am not sure of that price exactly because you basically have to find it first on eBay or a Part Out Company. If you can find it for the right price, I would consider the Transfer case to be a worthwhile upgrade to do, but buying used Adventure package axles may not be worth it. It would all depend on the price and how much labor it would cost to install it. What you can do instead if you wanted locking differentials, is you could just go online and just buy a new locker.
      Basically you would be buying the actual locking mechanism that goes into the axle and you would need to get that installed. There are a number of different brands out there you can buy from such as Yukon, ARB, Detroit, etc. Basically just go ahead and type in “AAM 8.6 locker” for the rear axle or “AAM 7.6 IFS locker” for the front. These aftermarket lockers can cost anywhere from $300 to $1200.” I would stray away from some of the cheaper options out there as they really don't give you the performance as the factory ones would. Some of them don’t truly lock and may lock up on the street. The cost of labor for one of these can range in price depending on where you're at but could be $500 to $1000.
      So overall it definitely would be costly, but if you are absolutely certain you want to keep your H3 instead of selling it and getting a adventure package, this might be the way to go. Please note by doing this, you are not adding any value to your H3 as this all would be considered standard equipment and you would not get the money back if you ever went to sell it after doing the conversion.
      So that is a summary. Let me know if anything was confusing about that because I know this is probably all gibberish to a lot of people.
      So if you just want take a look for adventure package parts look type in:
      - Borg Warner 4494 NR6 Transfer Case
      - AAM (GM) 8.6 10 Bolt Rear Axle
      - AAM 7.6" IFS Cast Iron

      4 Low Mode hey I'm thinking of getting a 09 H3t adventure with 75781 mileage also is a 5cylinder 3.7L is it good and do they have any major issues electrical issues or transmission issues that you know about is because I was going to buy a gladiator but still Jeep didn't learn from JL Wrangler steering wheel loose issue and recall they had

    • @4lowmode
      @4lowmode  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AlejandroP1980s The H3T is great! I Personally I haven't heard of any large complaints about the 3.7L engine. Believe it or not 75K miles is actually pretty low as many H3s today have over 100K+ miles today. Realistically speaking the 3.7L will last anywhere between 160K to 200K before the engine needs to be replaced. That being said I have seen H3s that go way above 200k when properly maintained.
      There is one widesperad electrical issue that could affect almost all H3s is the blower motor module. Basically the connector module that controls the blower motor speed for the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system may overheat and stop working. So basically that means the knob that controls how much AC/Heat the H3 blows out could stop working. There are four fan speed settings: 1, 2, 3, and 4. For me personally I have my number "4" fan speed stop working in my old H3. When I tried to put it on fan speed "4" it would just turn off. So that issue isn't critical, but still one to be aware of.
      If you have it in the budget I would also look into getting a H3T Alpha which has a 5.3L V8 if you are looking for more power and want to put large tires on the vehicle.

    Just picked up an adventure package through a sweet trade from a customer of mine. Your video is super helpful. Also, I noticed you have a little coin tray in front of your shifter, whereas mine is all smooth with nothing there.

      Glad I could help you out. Yes so there is like 50+ differences between model years. All 2006 and some 2007s did not have the coin tray but all 2008+ ones did. I have had these vehicles for such a long time now, I have noticed so many differences between model years lol

    Great video. Can you add a locking rear & front differential on a non locking h3 model? If yes, what does it typically cost?

    working my way thru your content mate.
    si Ive been searching for the full Alpha with both front and rear lockers. Wow as rare as rocking horse poop and expensive.
    So my question is am I better giving up to an inline 5 or an alpha with rear only. ??

    I am loving the Channel my guy! For someone with only a few videos and 1k subs your quality and presentation is fantastic! I own an 08 Alpha and have learned a lot through your vids. Looking forward to more of your videos. Quick question, does the Alpha come with the adventure package?

    • @4lowmode
      @4lowmode  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching! To answer your question, the Alpha does not come standard with the adventure package, it was a factory option that you could choose to add on when purchasing new,

      @@4lowmode Also, another question I have is about a leaking sunroof. Unfortunately, mine is leaking. Do you know any quick fixes to fix this or do you have any recommendations on what i need to do?

    • @ivank56
      @ivank56 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You may have a plugged or disconnected drain line. Look into the front corners. You can try to carefully blow them out but not too much pressure as they could get disconnected, if not already. Then you would have to drop the headliner to get to it. They go through the a-pillar and not readily accessible from underneath.

    I am not an expert at all, but I have a disagreement. I purchased a 2007 H3 in 2008 for my wife and the dealer had an off road set up behind the building. One obstacle in particular was to have 3 wheels on rollers so they would spin with one wheel on the ground. The H3 will distribute all power to the one wheel that has traction and will pull up over the obstacle. I was there, I saw it and drove it. It also crawled over a 16" vertical wall. I don't know what the traction is called, but it will distribute power to the wheels with traction. Also, we live in Alaska and the H3 has NEVER been stuck on ice, the traction distribution has been absolutely amazing for ice conditions.

    Excellent info! I had no idea H3's even came with lockers. I've been lusting for a jeep for years but the Rubicons are just too damn expensive! As im a big Chevrolet guy id feel much better sitting in a GM vehicle than a mopar 😜

    • @4lowmode
      @4lowmode  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah its a little known fact! GM really never distinguished the adventure package as anything special, it just a factory option.

    Hey man, I really enjoy your content. I like seeing someone who knows what they’re talking about make H3 content. I am currently shopping for one to use for our overlanding rig & to pull our 6x8 camper. My Frontier doesn’t have 4x4 so I started looking at 4x4 SUV’s. It’s between the H3 & FJ. Looking around I noticed a lot of the H3’s do not have the rear locking diff. Those always have high mileage & are ragged out (for the most part). So if I end up getting a lower mileage H3 without locking diff, could i install a aftermarket locking diff? If so, who should I purchase it from & is it a fairly straight forward install? Thanks man!
