Hello from Kansas City, MO! Born and raised here! My husband grew up in Independence! He said he remembers that the secret service was set up in the brick house across the street from the Truman home! Loved watching the estate sales but imagine my shock and surprise when you stopped at a garage sale…it was my husband’s Aunt and Uncle’s home! His uncle grew up in the beautiful old two story home next door. His father was a doctor and collected beautiful antiques. I remember the home with a salon and an upstairs ballroom with beautiful antiques everywhere! You would have loved it! (The family sold the home many years ago.)
I rang Harry Truman’s gate bell. I was 7. My dad made me lol. Someone looked out then window pulling the curtain back. Dad said it was Harry. He actually was alive and living there. It was in the 50’s.
You are 100% correct about estate sale companies over pricing things and then providing discounts and not telling you about the discounts and you leave so many things behind that you might’ve purchased.
In some cases, overpricing the good stuff is done so the estate sale person can get the stuff for very little or nothing at the end...not fair to the client
Your comment on the fondue pot made me chuckle. I remember sitting around a table starving to death as a teenager, while my older siblings, then married in their 30's having two pots going on the dinning room table. Took all evening to eat, with every little bite needing to go into that pot, and then come out at various stages of doneness or over doneness. lol It really is a silly way to have dinner, but the height of fashion according to my siblings at the time.
Aha! Thank you George. I just learned something about a family heirloom I inherited from my grandma. I have her, what I now know is a game table. It is circular though when you open it. She called it her hidden treasure table because she hid her more precious jewelry in the hidden card drawer. It has beautiful claw foot tips on the feet and the legs are more delicate than the one in this first estate sale.
It is too bad that they really did not want to sell everything at the first estate sale and also failed to mention the discount. They priced everything so high and now it will probably go to the GoodWill or another thrift center. Thanks for taking me along with you and showing me some wonderful glass. You have a great day and safe travels
I recently went to a living estate sale in Evansville, IN on the second day. The elderly lady and her family were running the sale. I commented to the daughter that it was the most goofus glass I'd ever seen on one place. She said, "Because it's all here!" She said it was about 800 pieces and it was everywhere. The plan was to pack it all up and wait for it to "come back." I got the feeling this beloved collection was not going to go anywhere while the mother was alive. And, it was for sure not going to be discounted in price for this sale.
Wow! I know a few serious collectors, and if it's an old collection in good shape it could do well. Few people are seeing goofus in non-worn condition now
George, you’re the best! I love estate sales, and I love the way you dismiss this overpriced sale, without knowing the 25% discount, but that was their fault! But, then, I laughed so hard when you were looking at the portraits and you said, “the black kid is worth more”. Hey, that’s just info that has value. Thanks for taking us along, always a treasure of good advice! ❤️
I like the way you hold back on buying because you have educated yourself on pricing and desirability, and you are so knowledgeable, George! Thank you so much!
In my area, estate sales are often priced at and above retail on Day 1. Day 2: 25% off. Day 3: 50% off. A few that have "everything goes" will have a Day 4 at 75% off and then in the last 30 minutes they may announce to fill a plastic grocery bag for $5 (less for clean up crew to haul off to charity, recycling, and the dump). For frugal buyers, going on Day 1 is only for deciding if worth returning once prices are discounted. As mentioned in other videos, best deals are things out of other's sight or recovery of something that someone else hid on Day 1.
Good evening, George! That epergne, at the go, was a beauty. I used to have a set of six of those paperweight cordials...gave them away. Those old tools would've gotten my attention. I actually use them, and much prefer them to newer tools. They were better made. Loved the Victorian bedroom set, but the price wasn't too good, for an estate sale. I liked that picture frame that was next to the commode. I really liked the New Orleans paintings. I've been to those places. That Empire game table was really nice. I've always liked those, but I've never owned one. Geez...their prices didn't seem very motivated to sell. Loved that bowl, at the church rummage sale, with the waterlilies transfer. The "Reflecting Waterlilies" is my favourite pattern in R S Prussia. You had some unexpected adventures that worked out well. Looked like a fun day. Thanks for the take-along!
I really like that the old tools can stand the torque! The epergne was rather pretty. The bedroom set was pretty as can be, but you'd have to be buying for yourself. New Orleans paintings are a genre in and of thenselves! the water lilies get me too, RS Prussia's are the best. Unexpected fun! Thanks for watching
❤ I had to stop for a SCREEN-SHOT at 21:26 That Patterned Shingle-Work Diamond on the Roof top is just the kind of thing that stops me in my tracks! I love it! Yes it is so rare!
My dad only had a middle initial, Billy B Floyd. I’ve not encountered many people with names like that. I’ll have to check out those estate companies, my sister-in-law is in Lawrence KS and does a lot of estate sales.
Lol...not sure i agree with your assessment on Fondue pots! Every Christmas Eve my family dined over fondue. No one burned themselves and we were young kids! Today...my kids love our traditional fondue dinner. Weve even added a second pot since our family has grown. All good! Buy a fondue pot and create your own traditional Christmas dinner!❤😊
This was such a fun video especially the info on one of my favorite Presidents! I love his story! Have your read the book Harry Truman’s Excellent Adventure? It was a great read!
You give a good "shopping fix" when ones local thrift store is a dud. Thanks for the historical tour at the end. Perhaps ask at every estate sale when you walk in if there is any percent off prices or theyre as marked?
Loved this video!! That first light blue epergne with the light iridescence was gorgeous!! They had a lot of those in the house. Thank you for sharing your extra stops in this video! I love learning about history. I loved your sign off. You would have been a fantastic reporter!! ❤
In my experience, Bluebird is almost always overpriced. It's better to go later on the 2nd day unless you have your heart set on a particular item. We pretty much have stopped going to their sales. I loved seeing you in my home area!
George, when u spoke of the Taylor Smith Taylor, from early 60's, you mentioned peo thinking there was less lead in the white glaze. There is a question here 😊 I have wondered if there is lead in the glass used to create Depression glass. And if lead was used, is it ok to use the serving pieces ?
I have an uncle J W. That's all there is to his name, other than the surname. His nine brothers and one sister all had a traditional first, middle, and last name. It's a mystery what was in my grandmother's head at the time. Maybe she was just tired of coming up with new names for kids, lol.
Thanks for the tag along. When I was about 10-11 y.o. I made a comment to a stern old auntie we didn't see very frequently about a fellow in an old portrait in her house (also happened to be in an oval convex mirror) saying off handedly who was that black fellow, and was he a relation of ours (meaning mine really)? Her tone got pretty cross, she gave me one of her withering looks, and said that he most certainly was not 'black', and that that particular branch of the family tree just had some darker skinned Italians and Sicilians, with whom our more direct relations had intermarried. Hmm? I changed the topic and moved on not particularly caring one way or the other, but the old hand tinted/painted photo sure looked like he could have been black to me. Heard a little ire in your voice at that first sale, always have to remember it's their stuff now, and they can price things any way they choose (and not be able to sell it too as a consequence), and as far as not mentioning discounts, maybe they are just bad at sales, many people are actually.
The antique furniture market must be doing well in Missouri because it's not in downstate NY, unless it's MCM. I always find comps before pricing the higher end items and adjust price accordingly for an estate sale.
His middle initial, "S", is not an abbreviation of one particular name. Rather, it honors both his grandfathers, Anderson Shipp Truman and Solomon Young, a somewhat common practice in the American South.[8][b] A brother, John Vivian, was born soon after Harry,
The S in Harry S Truman stands for "absolutely nothing", unquote. I always knew antique photos with black sitters sold for more than white sitters, simply because there are fewer of them. That goes double for daguerrotypes, if you can find any. Ask about discounts on a second day. Some sellers don't advertise it. I've made out like a bandit at some professional estate sales where I knew more than the seller did, especially if I was among the first in the door. Gotten gold, Meissen etc for pennies that way. 19:40 My machine THAT I STILL USE is sitting there. George went past it without a comment, but those old steel-case Singers are wonderful to use. Boat anchors to resell unfortunately.
I would have loved to have the name idea for the B’s or any county in Kentucky. As an amateur genealogist myself I am asked to look up names in my area from others seeking information. It is something that all good genealogists do because you will need help from many people along the way. Plus my ex-husband’s family was from Northern Kentucky (Boone County) a lady in the family was killed stepping off a curb in Northern Kentucky. I suspect that she was in her cups.
At the first sale right after the broken piece we’re what I thought were two pieces of beeswax portraits of women. We’re they beeswax? I have a couple religious beeswax wall hangings.
I have a few pieces of Desert Rose with the earliest stamp, clean and not a chip or crack anywhere. Not sure how to price it but I'm hoping it will do well.
George,@@TheAntiqueNomad Do they ever forge this stuff? When I first found these pieces I first thought they were too good to be true, how could 1940's dishware look so good? And why isn't it in somebody's collection? I passed over the pieces for days before finally pulling the trigger.
Wow...I love your pithy fact ending...just FAB you always when in a place point out landmarks and history through the ages things..Wasn't there a where Truman was born house in Oregon on way to coast from Pdx or Tigard and did you say you got to burn the match cross at Bible camp?? Not funny but funny...We made enamel on copper ones..they were great if you did it right and they did not burn..or you did not bend I have a couple I think..lol. Lovely things but as you say, you need to be able to may money and you need to have them at right time for what you have..I would be horrible at present having been away too long and buying it all, glad teapots and tea things are coming back..loved all the real china tea rests..sigh.
Idk, I’m not a reseller, but since Charles became King and all the royal drama going on, there have been a lot of vids and shorts and articles about Princess Diana. I’m thinking that maybe picking up a few commemorative items might not be bad idea. When William becomes king there may be a market for it. They already are comparingPrincess Kate to her late mother in law. Couldn’t hurt to buy and sit on it to see.

Added my Thumbs-up 👍, for liking George's video 👍
Nice difference in sales!
Harry Truman is my favorite president. It was great to see his home and some of the scenes from the town. Thanks George

Congratulations !🎉 I've always enjoy watching your channel. Here's to many more years! 🍾🥂❤
Would have loved to see that punch bowl!!!
Harry S Truman was helped by my cousins in Southeast Missouri. That is how he got into major politics of the 30-40s. He was a great prez

Great tips. Enjoy the historical tours.
Glad you like them! I'll try to find more interesting places to show
That was a lot of Rubbermaid 2 quart pitchers! I always like them better than Tupperware. They were easier to use for my kids.
Bible summer camp, yeah I made that cross!
Thank you for the tour of sales!

Love and estate sale ❤️🦩🌴🌞
Good Evening George & Xeno , from South Jersey, so ready for Fall 🍁
Can't wait!
Now, I would have assumed the items in the basement were 25% off and not the rest of the house.
Hi George!! You're in my hometown❤
My dad only had a middle initial, Billy B Floyd. I’ve not encountered many people with names like that. I’ll have to check out those estate companies, my sister-in-law is in Lawrence KS and does a lot of estate sales.
You always make me smile
Good evening everyone 🦩🌴🌞
👍💜Thanks George&Xeno! Fun video👍
Another excellent video. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I thoroughly enjoy going along with you to estate sales! I noticed a misspoke on your part. That row of Tupperware pitchers: they were Rubbermaid.
I enjoy your videos so much!
Oh I did like this video! Always fun to go shopping with you.
Shir😊let. Good con😊tent. Thanks
You are so funny 😂 really appreciate all the knowledge you share ❤

Interesting fact about the S in Harry S!
The estate company may have their own store.
School is in session!
I was so sure the S stood for “Superfly.”

I was happy with what I found!
Can everyone give a thumbs up 👍👍👍👍👍
I did Poodle ❤
I cant believe you can sell old Singer sewing machines , you can't give them away in the U.K.❤❤
Hi George.
We have so few antique stores left in houston. Consequently, antique dealers and estate companies are charging ridiculous prices. 😢
Auctions are getting ridiculously high too all over Texas, while the prices I can sell furniture for has gone down.
I am surprised that you didn’t get the pink lucite flowers at the first estate sale
Thanks for a fun video🦩🌴🌞
Glad you enjoyed it!
Please give a thumbs up if you haven’t 🙏🏻
Thank you!
Hi George & Xeno
Hello there!

I'm noticing estate sales have been full retail past 6 years.😢
I couldn't think of Truman's middle name but
Mary Katherine Gallager said is

Where do they get these numbers "😂i say that a lot😂

Hello all 😊👋
Hello all
Harry Sylvester Truman? ❤

I heard the S was because his parents couldn't agree on a middle name. Both names started with an S so they agreed on just the S!😂😂
At the first sale right after the broken piece we’re what I thought were two pieces of beeswax portraits of women. We’re they beeswax? I have a couple religious beeswax wall hangings.
