Yes, the parking brake is the key here. It has to be off. This also applies to F15. Thank you so much!

Follow the steps listed below in order to reset:
1- Turn off your car and keep the emergency brake off. Secure your car tires from moving!
2- Take the driver side wheel off.
3- Follow the sensor cable from the brake caliper to the black box, open and unplug the sensor gently.
4- Insert a Paper Clip or a Staple into the small holes, sensor part going back to the car. U shape the Paper Clip or Staple to create a bridge so you have an unbroken connection.
5- Press the start button one time, Keep your foot off the brake paddle, and the emergency brake off. Press and hold the service bottom until you see the service menu come up. Select front brakes, Release press and hold the bottom, Reset possible? Release, press and hold the bottom to perform the reset.
    .Reset Successfully completed!
Note: Sensors are not necessary to replace unless is broken, defective or faulty.

SUCCESS! I was having the same issue with my 2011 X3. I replaced the rear brake pads and couldn't get the brake light warning to reset. Someone in the below comments suggested the following: Take off the wheel that has the brake pad sensor. Follow the sensor wire to a plastic black box. Open the box. Disconnect the wire. Insert a small paperclip into the two holes of the connection that returns to the car. Turn power on with parking brake off. Go through the reset process (described in this video and comments) and WAHLAH!!...no more warning light!

For everyone saying you need to replace the sensor, this is untrue. What you need to do is disconnect the brake wear sensor cable from the snap connector hidden inside the little box inside the wheel arch. Once you have it disconnected insert a paper clip or staple into the 2 small holes so that you have an unbroken link between both the connector holes. Then whilst this is still in position try doing the reset inside the car again. Bingo job done!!

After successive failures the hand brake trick did work. First time I tried, the mileage went from green to red, which was strange since I'd had the pads changed a couple of months ago and I didn't expect to see any green in this menu for the fronts!. Regardless the reset failed! Second time it worked properly but I did have to turn the power off and on between each attempt. I suggest anyone having issues with this fix make sure you turn off/on before performing each reset. The garage who changed the pads told me the reason it hadn't reset was because the rears needing changing too - What a load of crap - checked these puppies myself and still got plenty of life in them. Happy driving x

  • @mattking530

Handbrake off (and don't press the brake pedal) is the key!
Turn the car on but not the engine (press Stop/Start key but not pressing the brake), release handbrake, long hold odometer reset button (odometer will show zero, then go back to whatever distance it was - whilst you are still holding the reset button) until it shows the first Condition Based Servicing (CBS) item, press odometer reset button to cycle to the service you want to reset, long press odometer until message "Perform reset?", press odometer reset button until you see "Reset in Progress" (can release the Odometer reset button). If you've had the handbrake off AND not pressed the brake pedal then it should reset correctly.

Got same problem on my 2012 F25 X3 after replacing brake pads. The problem is if you wait until pads are close to being gone, then the sensors will start to worn & the vehicle computer registers this in its memory & require mechanics to follow specific procedure when replacing sensors to make sure the worn-out sensors are replaced. My mechanics did replaced brake pads+rotor+sensor, but the service indicator would not reset, so he had to call the dealer to find out why and got the procedure from dealer on how to reset brake service indicator (when the old sensors were worned).

I had exactly the same issue with a new sensor. To solve this you have to enter into unlocked mode before resetting
    Turn on the ignition.
Press and hold the reset button until the hidden menu comes up. You should see FGSTNR on the cluster.
Scroll to item 19 to unlock. It will display Lock: ON.
Locate the VIN number on the door jamb or lower-left corner of the windshield. Add the last 5 digits of your VIN.
Below item 19 you will see Code:00. Change Code to the sum of the last 5 digits of your VIN using the trip reset button.
Once the hidden menu is unlocked, you will be able to reset impossible values to the factory setting.
Turn off the ignition and wait 10 seconds.
    Try to reset Again
