I had the same problem after replacing a new set of brake pads, rotors and wear sensor. I drove the car to outside for a few minutes, and then manage to reset it again, and this time it was successful.
Same thing happened to me on 2018 mini Cooper S… New pads and new wear sensor… It was driving me nuts getting the unsuccessful reset message… I kept hyper focusing on the new plug clipping it in and clipping it over and over… Finally pulled it all back apart, and pulled the new sensor off of the new brake pad and realized that the wear sensor has Brass surrounding that is obviously meant to make contact with the brake pad… New brake pad is glossy and painted… I scraped a little paint out of the valley where the brake sensor plugs into so it will make a solid connection. Put it all back together and success in resetting…that’s why even a new sensor is not working for some of you. It was a good effort in this video but it’s probably led people to destroy perfectly good sensors just to make the light go out.
Good job on the video. I'm having a similar issue, only problem is for me I actually installed a new wear sensor and I still get this message. I'm wondering if the sensor is defective or maybe I damaged it some how ... ?
I’ve heard that it needs to be reset with or without the parking brake being set. Have you tried both ways? Also, are you positive that the tip of the new sensor is installed fully and not contacting the rotor? Basically, yes, they can be sensitive and you may have damaged it. If you want to narrow it down a bit you can splice the wires together on the old sensor and see if it resets. If it does, you know the new one is also bad.
I changed pads, rotes and sensor. Tried multiple times, was unable to reset. But without parking brake being set, reset was successful. So make sure the parking brake is off.
I've just checked my outer pad, and it's nice and meaty! I'll need to wait until next weekend to have a thorough look now 🤦 200 mile commute and it's my only car in rainy England lol. Thank you for the insight bro.
Release your handbrake before doing it. I've just had same problem, found another video that said you've gotta release handbrake and take your foot off the brake pedal (so car is sitting on the gearbox parking pin only so do it on flat) and then it'll reset.
Hello I have a 2017 230i my rear breaks are still thick it says unsuccessful when I try and rest and I only have it in park no hand break on idk why it’s not working

Dude, thank you. I'm such a moron, to not have thought of this. Of course the dash won't reset if you try to do it while the brakes are engaged. THANK YOU!!!!!
I have to add.. none of the BMW forums had that key piece of info about the brake pedal... my car is MT and parking brakes have been removed for nearly 2 years so foot on brake pedal when car is on and parked is habit.. Thanks for saving me taking off the rear tire and liner again.
Easiest instructions. 1) splice sensor wires together 2) enter car 3) shut doors/hoods fully 4) turn off parking brake 5) hit start button three times 6) hold trip button until see service menu 7) hit trip for each item and locate one with red lighting 8) hold trip until reset? 9) hold trip to say Yes… voila. Done. I did not have to hold down my trip button as it was resetting in progress once it began I let off of the trip and it still reset it…. You don’t even have to take your wheels off to do this. You don’t have to jack the car up. It’s very easy hopefully this helps simplify things because I went to the same process trying to find Information and wasn’t all accurate. I had a 2019 BMW X1 S Drive M series
Hi just had the same problem on my X7 2019 but I think it's better to disconnect brake pads sensor and reconnect it again, the car electrical system will know it was replaced , you dot need to cut wiring for still working sensors . This save time and money
Much easier to perform resetting is if you just release parking brake and switch off the auto hold system... Then you don't need to disconnect anything...
Thanks, saved my ass, tried using my snap on scanner and brand new thinktool scanner and could not do it with either of them but your method worked perfect. I did replace the sensor.
Yeah it’s really just one wire that runs through that little sensor. When the sensor wears through it breaks the circuit so you just need to tie the wire back together after cutting off the sensor on the end.
Make sure your emergency brake is released while resetting your brake diagnostic. Do not cut your wire like this guy until you are sure you disengaged your emergency brake during rest.
I CAN EXPLAIN TO PEOPLE THAT THE ELECTRIC BRAKE MUST BE DOWN WHEN THE BRAKE PADS RESET IS DONE, IN THE FIRST RESET YOU FAILED TO RESET BECAUSE YOU DID NOT DOWN THE ELECTRIC BRAKE... YOU EXPLAIN AND I CAN'T EVEN EXPLAIN WHY IT IS SO
You still have to reset the service light after tying the wires. It simulates the same electrical resistance as a new sensor. Did you reset the light after doing it?
4:45 actually it worked! It took like 4 times and the last time I turned off my E brake (even though I did the front brakes) and it was successful! Thanks!

just did it on my m340i after weeks of it being unsuccessful and trying every method this worked!!! thank you

@@NellumNai YES
could you do it on the front brake to? because front has the M caliper
Hello I have a 2017 230i my rear breaks are still thick it says unsuccessful when I try and rest and I only have it in park no hand break on idk why it’s not working
That’s because you did not release the handbrake. Release it then you do the reset.
Bro i love you this was such a fn headache 😂😂
I've just spent 2 frickin hours trying to reset this. None of the guides I've seen mentions the handbrake.
Easy, if you know how...
Legend
Wow this this this helped me a lot!!! Thanks
Still unsuccessful for me :/

Thank you. Just did my brakes and had the same issue.
Sure thing.
I have same issue but with my engine oil reset it’s says reset unsuccessfull

Do I have to cut both sensors or just one?
This is the video I needed! Thank you, man.
Hello, is it necessary to press the star stop button 3 times to then enter reset mode? I have not been able just pressing the mileage reset button
Yes it is
That was exactly my issue!!! Subscribed 💪🏿
knowledge is fuk__in power!
Tried it and it works, thanks bro

I’ll do it tonight on my bmw i3!! Thank you so much ❤
I experienced the same thing on a 2019 BMW X5 and this solved my problem. Thank you!
Thanks after a couple tries it works 👍
Change pad wear sensor
Are you linked the yellow and red wire together or what ?!
Yeah it’s really just one wire that runs through that little sensor. When the sensor wears through it breaks the circuit so you just need to tie the wire back together after cutting off the sensor on the end.
@@newfinishautospa thank you bro i will try it
Thanks for the info. Much appreciated.
No problem
Works perfect 👍🏽
Or just stick a jumper wire in the connector
Perfect! Thanks👍👍👍
You're welcome!
Thank you very much for your help it works THX 🙏
Thanks bro👌🏽
Handbrake needs to be OFF prior to reset
thanks for the advice. I was having this issue. handbrake off and reset perfectly.
Good idea 💡
Thanks a lot
Thanks
No problem

thanks it worked ,you saved me hahaha I was about to cut wire and who knows what else I would have damaged
thank you!
why not just replace the sensor for $10?
jump the circuit with a paperclip. when in doubt……. mcguyver
@@tristansinclair7330 haha yeah it’s an extremely simple circuit tho. I’m no mcguyver lol
Still doesnt work bro

What this guy said is 100% correct, do not engage the electric parking brake and it will reset
Shorted the wires and still getting the alarm on a f31.

I tried to reset my brakes pad and end up resetting trip and now it reads 0000.00🤦🏽♀️
😂 the same happened to me
It didn’t work bro

Get to the point
No shit come on
Nope.
