The drone shots in the beginning really show how huge these new silos are, compared to your old setup. Really enjoyed your explanations as to why you did things the way you did. I don’t think most people realize how much work, and planning goes into running a farm. Always enjoy your videos.
Furthermore, it gave an excellent bird’s eye view of the entire operation. The drone in the past has given us view of planting and harvesting, but this one was great because it took in everything.
Growing up in suburbs of NJ watching ur channel has helpd me think like a farmer. Thats it though..workng,planting , and organizing like a farmer with all the variabiles is little stressful. Its really incredibile thnks what u do
I really respect the way you address comment section experts. No pushback, no defensiveness. "I know other people are doing it this way and it's working really well for them, but we've considered our situation and our needs and we're comfortable with the choice we made."
Thanks Eric. Really interesting to hear some of the thoughts behind your decisions. I look forward to seeing the robot feeders and how that works. Good luck.
You have one of the most impressive dairy farms on you tube, I am truly impressed with your ability to manage your operation. Many blessings to you and your family.
You are scientists, you just maybe don’t know it. I have my PhD in Organic chemistry. My grandfather was a dairy farmer in Northern Wisconsin and was one of the smartest men I knew - “but he was just a farmer” I explain to my colleagues on a regular basis that we conduct experiments in controlled environments, while farmers conduct theirs on a real-world, large-scale "laboratory" - their farm. Thank you for bringing us along on your experiment. Your rationale seems well thought out and articulated. I’m wishing you the best - can’t wait for the data that will test your hypothesis!
It doesn’t matter what the Monday morning wanna bees think. Your farm is impressive for its size. It works for future. Keep it rolling my friend you have a beautiful operation in a beautiful area. Nice job!!!!
Those silos look so good in your drone shots, I think Sollenberger should put a nice hi-res photo of them on their website! Thanks for all the great info, looking forward to hearing your thoughts in a few years when everything has been up and running for a while.
Very interesting, i can't wait to see all of this come together. Eric you and your family have the best dairy farm you tube chanel. You explain everything to such detail. Thank you for taking your time to make these videos for us to watch. I grew up milking cows and boy have things changed over the year's. Thanks again !!
Intro music made me think I'd opened the wrong video but it actually really worked for the really nice drone shots and showing just how much bigger the new silos are compared to everything close by
That’s what I thought. I thought I opened a video on the Doom games with how the music was. Loved the shots Eric it was maxing to see how massive the silos are great music choice as well
You’ve put lots of thought into your decision for what you believe works best for you. You’re not driven by what looks the best, & over building to impress others. Your thoughtful management will keep you in business for generations to come. Wishing you & your family well.
Your channel is so educational. I was reading the ingredients of my breakfast cereal yesterday, and one ingredient was Triticale! So I now know I am eating dairy cow feed!
Eric those silos look like landmarks. Very impressive. What is also super impressive is your vision and knowledge of your farm. Thank you for taking the time to give us this educational video. The silos seem to be a better and more economical way to go. Really looking forward to seeing the robotic feeding system working. I really was curious about the cost of the silos but would have never asked such a personal question. Thank you for sharing that. Thanks again till the next one.
I am pumped for this project! Can't wait to see the robot system get built! I enjoy when you give us some details on how you arrive at these decisions. I am curious how it all works out over time. Everything you have described so far sounds like it would be a huge improvement if it can be implemented as described. Its easy to have sticker shock because of big numbers... but when you pencil it out over 10 years and you factor in labor/time savings, improved feed quality and all the other variables... those numbers can make way more sense all of a sudden. Thanks for taking us along, Eric!
Started a marine storage business in our old barns, eventually building large storage barns due to success. We built a swimming pool with the harvestore sheets, when we dismantled. thanks for great videos!
16:45 Well... I've been watching y'all for at least 4 years now. So, I guess y'all are doing a great job! When I was driving trucks OTR, when I would shut down for the day, I was always looking forward to an upload lol Don't know what it is (maybe it's just watching another interesting job) but I do enjoy your videos. Thanks!
Thanks Eric and family. From one dairyman to another, it’s great to have weekly open houses at your place. Wishing you well with your project. It was great to hear your reasoning and thought process. As I work each day it gives time to consider how to do better with what God has blessed us with. Take care climbing those monsters
Sounds like you guys have a nice plan for the future, lots of changes but they made sense to me. Every farm is different based on all the factors that impact it and the folks that run or work it. You guys do good working the farm and it's good that you have the family working together. Good luck for the future and have a great weekend!
Really like how you've thought all the processes out..so very important, and you seem very logical. Hope you're including your ag instructor in some of the processes for possible input where there may be questions. Undertakings like this from one of his students has to be one of his proudest moments. It's great you're doing this while you're young rather than wait..and you'll have more changes to grow into over time. I grew up on a dairy farm, and realize the challenges. Really like your logic!
I am watching 5 farmers on YT since years, one Irish, one German organic, two American and one Canadian. I have learned, that there is not one right way to do it. You always have to put every fact into concideratioin to find out, what is right for your farm. I understand your points, as I understand the points from the other guys.
Excellent review of your project and reasoning pros and cons. Future plans and backups with 2 robot feeders and sounds like they have the capacity to cope with more cows. Good luck with the new set up, looks great. Uk dairy farmer running a low input grazing system so always enjoy viewing your system 👍
Really looking forward to following this the next few years to see how this all works out! You all did your research for sure before deciding to move forward with it!
Thank you for the silo tour and detailed update on the installation schedule for the new robot feeding system. It is very apparent that you and your family put a lot of thought and planning into making these large decisions for your dairy operation. I liked your comment about “the land of opportunity” But instead of a McDonalds franchise. Maybe a “Dairy Queen” would be more appropriate🤣 Outstanding video work as always. Have a blessed weekend!
A quonset type roof might be a cost effective method of covering those bunks. You've put a lot of thought and planning into this expansion. Best to you all!
Those shots of the silos really show how flat your area is. Here in my neck of the woods in the PNW, 132 feet barely gets above the tree tops, never mind the hills. Must be some great views from up there on top of those silos. Great explanation of the whole process you went through on deciding to build the silos and install the robot feeding system.
Hi Eric. If you are familiar with Tom Pemberton, over in the UK. He put up a roof on his outdoor double bunk, just recently. In his case, he raised the outer walls, to get more silage in and the extra height makes it easy for his machinery to get in/out. It came out really nice, I say this because of your hope to get the bunks there covered. Just as a reference point. I agree, the opening drone shots were amazing. Those silo's are the tallest standing structures for miles. And the view from up there is unmatched. I've heard it said, that "The best laid plans, are JUST best laid plans." Be prepared for any scenario, "just in case." I'm sure the farm will be ready to go.
Absolutely fantastic!!!! 6 degrees of YT. Someone mentioned in the comments of a train hopping video about your silos. The train hopping content creator was lamenting the destruction of silos at now abandoned grain elevators. Both of them were curious why you built silos vs bunks. I commented back about your plans for robotic feeding and they were both impressed. Small world for big silos. Interested in the question about FAA navigation/ warning lighting.. again congrats 🎉
Was in the area of your farm a couple weeks ago, and boy, it's not hard to spot the new silos! Impressive to say the least! Best of luck getting the new system up and functioning!
Dad and I are already using Harvestores for our 60 cow dairy in Western Ohio. Looking at expansion and we were basically already sold on silos anyway. This only confirms it
10 year payoff?? Where are the silos increasing milk production that much to make it paid off in 10 years? What are you predicting for increased milk production?
I would still recommend spraying the inside of the silos with a protective liner. We have a spray-on liner in a steel mill coolant pit, the coolant will eat rubber and concrete over time, but the liner is holding up very well.
Very interesting discussion of the planning involved and $ involved. Thank you. In the south we have dozens and dozens of the hoop bound precast silos that were abandoned in decades past as farming diminished especially animal farming and land has been taken over by forests. We are still an agricultural state but mostly wheat. feed corn, soy and cotton.
Ingenious idea for making big silos and the idea of storing manure in the older are is smart. Thank you for giving us an update. Y’all put a lot of thinking into the farm
I am so excited to see the new operating systems on the farm and praying 🙏🏼 everything works out how you will like congratulations 🎉 on the new silos 😊😊😊
Build a couple shops or equipment storage with the bunkers. Pretty simple to build a roof system. Walls are already there. Can replace the storage area that the feeder will take over. jmho
It will be interesting to see you fill those 132' silos. My old neighbor has a 20x 100. It took longer to fill the last 5 doors than the rest of silo. It settled faster than he could blow it in.
Love all your plans for the future and how things are going right now. Your plans are really going to make a difference on the farm. Good luck with it and keep up the educating videos, I love them.
I see no benefit to that. What good in the end does bragging do? You could have all kinds of problems with getting the forage to the top. But hey, “I got the tallest silos around”
Very informative video Eric! I love you always looking at ways to improve your operation & cow comfort. I'm excited for you & your family! Thx for sharing!💙
Great contact Eric keep up the good work farmer to farmer it’s great to see your progress moving into the future I hope it all works out well and I wish you the best of luck thanks
You don’t mind climbing now but you will when you are fifty years old, our harvestor silos have automatically controlled lids. And feed value is so much better out of them, but we use all alfalfa and corn silage and high moisture corn
If you're gonna take down the oldie silos, maybe you can turn that free plot into some kind of home farm where you'd grown your own veggies or something. Sounds like something that can pay for itself in the long run in food costs for your family! Much love.
Nice to hear about the improvements! Periodically climbing the silos will ensure you maintain high leg strength for decades. Motivation to exercise isn't a factor when it's incorporated into work. I do squats and stationary bike.
Congrats Eric, thanks for sharing your plans. To a none farmer, your plans are very impressive. With the amount of concrete the cost seems reasonable. I can’t wait to see it all come together. You and your dad always put the health and wellbeing of the animals first which is nice to see. I’m hate seeing all these massive corporate farms taking over. Good luck and Gods speed.
I’m gonna miss that old feed room cause I watched you grow up on that setup and we have a feed room just like that but I understand you have to change your setup to be more efficient but imma miss that feed room cause it really nice
I think the "make the best of what we have" philosophy is really wise. I was wondering while I watched the silos go up how you'd maintain enough land for crops to fill them. The East Coast is gradually turning in to one huge suburban housing development, and even your area is likely to be impacted at some point. I would think buying more land as opposed to renting it (and sooner rather than later) would be a bigger safety net against development, but that is a prohibitive expense. But in any case maximizing what you have to the absolute nth is very key. The only other thing I was thinking was that as the buildings age out and are replaced maybe coming up with a comprehensive super efficient plan for building placement. Seems like now there is a long drive to anywhere to get a task done. (But hard to tell with just 20 minute videos and not being there.)
Great job explaining everything and why you did it this way, there are so many options and different things work for different farms. I look forward to seeing how this will work for you guys. I assume then the molasses is gonna get moved

Yes that’s a really big diff
I am most impressed with your thought process on this expansion.
It's not just him, his dad has more say.
Big investments means big rewards. You still have to work hard at it but this will not be an issue as far as I can see.

Great plans Eric. Those three new silos are huge!
Great explanation of your path forward. The intro was super cool. Sounded and looked like some 60s Soviet rockets about to blast off.

I'm with you on the McDonald's franchise Eric! Lunch time would be fantastic and the 'Super Size Me' theme goes right along with the silos😃
I’m really impressed with this project that have you been working on, it’s just so awesome, good luck with it🙏🏻

Great opening Eric love the video. Great info also. Happy Summer
Thanks young man!! Wish you guys the best of luck getting this project done!!!

Your farm now has "Tallest Silos in the Area" bragging rights! :)
I see no benefit to that. What good in the end does bragging do? You could have all kinds of problems with getting the forage to the top. But hey, “I got the tallest silos around”
@@MrMagnum7220Chill out Karen.
Great planning, thank you for sharing your upgrades.
Thanks for your excellent comments about your operation, very interesting; thanks!
I will forever from this day forward be asking God to be watching your feet as you climb the silos. I know He’s got you in His hands. Be safe. 🙏
Very informative video Eric! I love you always looking at ways to improve your operation & cow comfort. I'm excited for you & your family! Thx for sharing!💙

Keep up the good videos
You could use one of the bins to compost your manure. Run slotted pipes lengthwise to allow oxygen into it. People pay good money for good compost
Bro, that intro with the drone🥰😍🥰 menn what a silo’s, wauw
You don’t mind climbing now but you will when you are fifty years old, our harvestor silos have automatically controlled lids. And feed value is so much better out of them, but we use all alfalfa and corn silage and high moisture corn
