    Timings for the drag race?

  • @vladsmachina3285
    @vladsmachina3285 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very simple:
    The RS6 has a gearbox. A gearbox is a torque multiplication device.
    The torque to the wheels is not the engine torque figure that you quote, but more probably like 2000 ft lb at the wheels in first gear. So then the RS6 pulls away from a stop. But then, with each gear shifted up, the multiplication is reduced (probably 500 ft lb at the wheels in second, 450 in third, etc. example numbers, not calculated numbers) and probably by 5th, the gearing is direct drive with no more multiplication of torque at all.
    So then the RS6 torque advantage fades away quickly and the Etron catches up.
    The Etron doesn't have a gearbox. So it doesn't have gearbox losses. So then the horsepower figure quoted for the Etron, counts as wheel horsepower for the RS6. So the RS6 is down around 100 HP, when compared to the Etron.
    Weight wise, the 100 lb that the Etron is heavyer doesn't dynamically make much of a difference, once the car is up to speed. So then the Etron pulls away.
    To have a fair and interesting drag race between an EV and a internal combustion vehicle, you have to have two where the HP figure is the same number: WHEEL HP in case of the internal combustion, as compared to motor shaft HP in case of the EV.
    Should that situation happen, I predict that the IC engined vehicle, if AWD, will pull away, until the higher gears. Then the EV will catch up more, with every gear shift in the IC engined car, where it takes fraction of a second for the IC engine to get back up in the high RPM and top torque band, for every new shift into a higher gear. However the modern shifting programs in automated gearboxes designed to have many gears are such that during a shift the RPM drop very little below the max torque RPM, so the torque loss at full throttle during shifts is minimal. Conversely, lighter gearboxes with small number of gears have reduced inertia, but lose out on engine torque during shifts.
    As speed increases, the weight advantage of IC car decreases, so at the top end the EV catches up.
    As a second and third attempts are made, the IC heat soaks and produces less HP, and starts to be slower and lose subsequent drag races.
    A Dodge Demon will be faster than any Tesla at a drag race track, but: the track has to be prepped. At the drag race track, muscle cars win not only through their on-board numbers, but also through the quality of the track prep. And muscle cars don't win repeatedly with the same times every time, because there are too many factors involved in obtaining a quarter mile record. That used to be the beauty of drag racing and the talent of the pilot. A Tesla will put with robotic consistence the same quarter mile number. Any one of dozens of factors can cause a Dodge Demon to not achieve it's factory record quarter mile number, or to get close to that. Then the tesla consistency wins the day. The one or two times when the Demon wins are discounted as freak situations.
    At the track, an IC engine vehicle that has the same WHP as the EV has motor shaft HP, will win every time. However, in the case of the Tesla Plaid, there are not ... many mass produced cars which come from the factory with 1200 WHP in a IC engine car.
    When comparing an IC engined sportscar with suitable WHP even with something like a Model 3 Performance at the track, there are two problems:
    1. Tesla doesn't quote HP figures, because they're variable. The car can come with say 450 motor shaft HP, but then a few months later, the programmers get 10 more HP, by reprogramming something.
    2. You have to race this model 3 at the track with something that has in an IC car, 550-600 crank HP. Not many of those are lightweight track cars. Those that are, are not hot versions of sedans (M3/4, AMG, RS. V, etc), but expensive supercars. Those will beat the Model 3 performance at the track, but their price will be more than double.
    On a general level, Tesla progressed the performance of the EV's before the old, entrenched, emissions-limited automotive industry could give us through the horsepower wars a 500 HP Honda civic or a 1000 Factory HP M3.
    If the Tesla progress had been 5 years slower, the IC cars would have kept up and the performance-driven EV validation that Tesla achieved would have been more difficult.

    So how many miles on the etron are used up for each launch? Seems no one want to answer that one. Next car…the etron for sure. Just needs more range i.e. better batteries.

  • @gregorygant4242

    As a daily driver still take the RS6, more overall complete car , does everything the better, the E-tron is quick off the launch , acceleration but still an incomplete car .
    It's just a quick acc. EV , doesn't do much anything else ,no sound , no emotion, nothing.
    There's more to a car than just straight linear acceleration !

    Put them on a track together, I'd like to see if the RS6P would be quicker per lap due to braking? Fast on straights? Not in cornering. That's why EV's in their current form, won't be bought for people who like to track their cars occasionally

    • @gibroon4418
      @gibroon4418 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, its one of those things we don't seem to see with EVs so far. They are great at accelerating but we don't see much track action. Most cheaper EVs have their top speeds nerfed to 100 mph.

    • @AdamForeman
      @AdamForeman ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gibroon4418 there is a Tesla track development car called the "Dark Helmet" (another Spaceballs reference) in America. It's blistering quick around the track. BUT, they had to change the batteries and much more importantly, after one lap, the batteries are reduced so badly that the next lap is so bad that a combustion engine car flies by. It has to go into the pits to charge pretty much every lap. Absolutely useless as a race car.

      Haven't tracked my Taycan yet but at least on curvy mountain roads in the Alps it was more fun than my earlier F80 Comp. Maybe missing in bit in compared to E92 M3 but still great. The steering is super accurate and out of the corners it's crazy fast.

    The future is not electric, when you spend 1 hour charging it after 5 minutes of flooring it. My Audi has a 700 mile range, and not that far behind in terms of real life driving speeds.
    It's been shown how EV cars depreciate, and the battery replacement costs are astronomical. I'll bet anything that e-tron goes through battery range and tyres like nom nom nom nom yes please more please.
