Hey Jarabu930 it is jamesssl :) Just saying congratulation on your almost 50 k viewers ! :) Still thanking you for your perfect solution :) Cheers and thank you so much to share !
@TheLcstyle I see, I only know the basics about troubleshooting and comp issues. so its always good to learn new solutions; I might do that next time for another problem I could run into.
I've had the same problem. The servicedesk advised me to contact the shop where I bought my new notebook, where the solution is present on the machine itself. I wonder why those people get paid. Anyway my problem is solved now thanks to your effort. Many thanks from the Netherlands.
OMG!!!!! Thanks a bunch! It worked perfectly for me. ASUS tech support told me to ship my ASUS K43SJ back to their technical warehouse to this very problem; which would have entailed me some money if I did. I love ASUS for the dependability of their products; but their tech support is useless.
Thanks so much ! I'm so grateful you posted this cause I've got this same issue and now it's fixed ! I've searched across the web and it seems it's the best way to solve this kind of problem.
@jamesssl Nice! Happy to help you and pleased to hear that this was useful. Thank you for letting me and others know of your efforts and the process you had to go thru to get this to work properly.I'll keep this info for future reference incase what I did alone doesn't work for someone else. Again I'm glad it worked out for you :)
@rcsan12 Okay, I did a lil research for this. try opening your command prompt as an administrator. then type "dism /cleanup-wim" and enter. I think what that'll do is mount the files completely, then from there you can run the change HD application. If this doesn't work there might be a couple more solutions.
There is another reason this error can occur on Asus Laptops. The AI Recovery software uses your my documents folder as a temporary folder to create the bootable image. If you are like me and map your my documents folder to a UNC Network Path, (example: "\\server\SharedFolder") the software will give you the same error. The workaround is to point your my documents folder back to the default location on the C Drive. (example: "C:\Users\yourusername\My Documents"). Once you do this it will work.
when I pressed f9 while rebooting, I wouldn't see the Windows EMS enabled option. It would only show windows and start normally. Once I launched that "changeHD" and let it do its work, once I rebooted it was finally there. I was desperate, so far no guide was helpful. Glad to find a solution by chance I was trying to restore my laptop to factory setting, and I was trying to burn dvds since my partion for recovery was there but not available....While trying to solve this further issue, this could have fixed the previous problem
If it doesn't open you don't need to open it in safe mode. Might as well run it as administrator. Right click "Run as Administrator" and that'll make it for you.
@TheAndroidEnthusiast umm,not ganna lie,not 100% sure ha. but I think the partition would be backed up, since the tool is only used to burn those files to dics(dvd/CD) to restore your operating system (windows) in the case of your harddrive crashing from a virus or whatever..once you've made the disc, you can restore from them. But if you dont have the partition to make the disc in the 1st place then, its sad. I made this vid cuz i simply put the files on my HD and not disc
@rcsan12 you might want to try "dism/unmount-wim" or /mount-wim or /remount-wim first...I think "/cleanup-wim" will delete the files and I'm not sure if that matters or not but I would feel terrible if your partition files were totally lost.
@Jarabu930 yeah believe me this drove me crazy with my new vx7 lambo. FYI the way I figured this out was by running sysinternals process monitor to see what the process was doing.
I did a lil research and found 2 places that seem to have the same solution. 1 site said, "The easiest way for a factory restore is hitting F9 during POST, and running the Recovery Wizard. No need to make disks. For future backups, you can use Windows Backup, or a 3rd party like Acronis Home 2012 or Clonezilla." And since they won't let me post links, google, ASUS Eee PC Technical Updates System recovery. That has steps for the F9 option. Let me know how it works out, good luck!
you can download that ai recovery software from their site...just enter the model of your laptop and what is the version of your OS (32-bit or 64-bit).
@krycharts All you gotta do is right-click on the application and it should be there as an option. Mine appears at the 4th option from the top of the list, just below "open file location"
I have no clue. But are you able to get to the page when you first turn on the comp and are able to push the "F" function buttons to maybe restore factory default settings? Idk if you'd wanna do that but from what I understand is that you can't login in anymore? got nothing to loose then in that case, unless there's a better way...but that is beyond me
Trying to do the EXACT same thing on a coworkers PC, and when I browse to this location (AI Recovery) the ChangeHD application is simply not there. Any ideas?
Ran as admin, it did run & said drive letter assigned & partition active, etc...But when I run the recovery, it initially shows as successful (partition active/drive letter assigned), but then, after about ten secs, it goes back to, "partition does not exist"??
Bringing an old post back to life I'm happy that it works for most people but I'm lost and frustrated. I had upgraded to Win 10 but was having trouble with a sluggish keyboard, so I F9'd and recovered to Win 7 Home Premium. But now I can't create recovery DVDs on an external DVD drive. Getting the Partition Doesn't Exist error. I've run ChangeHD as administrator. I tried safe mode. The DOS window flashes by but nothing changes. I even tried running ChangeHD in an elevated CMD window. It apparently executes because I don't get the "unrecognized command" error, but it simply returns to the prompt with no messages. (For what it's worth I did create a Win 7 repair disk.) Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
hi @jarabu930 I'm pretty sure I have the latest version of AI recovery from ASUS. however, I have this message: "The factory default is deleted. You cannot use AI recovery to create a backup of the factory default settings. " I'm not sure what's wrong My computer is ASUS G74SX
Completed all the steps but while running the "changeHD" application ; it says :THE CURRENT LOGGED ON USER DOES NOT HAVE ADMINISTRATOR PRIVALEGES . SO i right clicked "changeHD" again and clicked "RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR" and then it says "the process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process" please help ! I dont know what to do and it's stressing me out . -thanks .
When I open the AI Recovery, it says: "The factory default backup is deleted. You cannot use AI Recovery to create a backup of the factory default settings". I've tried to press f9 at boot, but it doesn't work. I have Asus N55SF, please help?
I downloaded their latest version as suggested but when I tried to reinstall it kept being interrupted and telling me that a source file was not found. Thanks for the suggestions anyway
@TehWarriors Try downloading the drivers for AI Recovery on the asus support site.I'd put the link on here but it won't let me post it. google, asus then click downloads.... you'll need to type in the model, serial #, or use their auto-detect feature. But if you want I can just maybe copy the program and send it to you via email. idk if thats how stuff works but worth a shot. inbox me ur email and I'll attach it and send it to ya, if your comfortable with that.
i have tried to do that but it says the current logged on administrator does not have administrative priviledges. what happened? I have always used this computer under this username and password as an administrator
I have one question: I have deleated by accidentally my windows 7 and recovery partition on my asus g53sw lapop and how can I back it up using asus software cd. Can I burn windows vista using unetbootin and run my cd and create recovery partition. Would it help?
hello, I wonder if the ai recovery burner on your computer, program files, stuck in one place, would you be willing to upload? I'm sorry, I'm using the language translation program!
it says the factory default backup is deleted you cannot use AI Recovery to create a backup of the factory default settings. Do you know anything i can do??
A couple people had this problem but they never got back to me on my suggestions so I'm not sure if they helped or not ha. But I told them to check Asus site and download their latest version of AI Recovery to see if the files will be in that folder. Or I can possibly send you the files via email if you're comfortable with that. But again idk if it'll work or not. I'll continue looking for other solutions tho
hey jarabu930, I followed your steps and after running changehd.exe and ran ai recovery, the only option i get is 'slimtype BD E DS41ES' and the status is 'no enough free disk space to save temporary files.' is that cuz there's no space in my hard drive? do i need to get a black CD and it will work? thanks a bunch
@Jarabu930 also try doing what "jamesssl" did when at first this didnt work for him. Not sure what issue he had but he said it didnt work till he tried "change HD" in safe mode and restoring the comp. to its earliest point. look at his comment he posted about a week ago on the 3rd page.
then you can just download whatever operating system you have off the internet. Guessing you have windows 7? You can get the files and mount them virtually with software like PowerISO or just burn them to a blank disc/flash drive. After you run it you'll need to type in the serial# of your computer to active the OS, which is usually on the bottom of laptops or back of desktops. if you don't have the serial# then you'll have to pay to use the software, which is too much for me personally.
download from the link in the description..It might not work for windows 8. I'm sorry I'm not more knowledgeable on it..It's just something I found in my files
i´m trying to download change HD application because i have the same proble like breakinmedia, but i don´t find it on web. Please anyone has the file? Thank you

You are awesome dude. The factory restore option which can be accessed by pressing F9 at start up came back after I did this. Thanks a tonne :)
@jamesssl You're very welcome :D thank you for the positive feedback!

@rcsan12 No problem, we'll figure this out. did you try the "/cleanup-wim".. and or running the "changeHD" program in safe mode yet?
thank you a billion times infinity. it's amazing people like you who bothered to make and post a video on how to fix this error. thanks again :)
I cannot thank you enough for posting this! I've been trying to figure out what the hell was going on for quite sometime! My ASUS and I thank you!!

@KerAlbanb You're welcome! I was looking everywhere for a solution too. Asus and geeksquad didn't even have a clue.
Thanks so much! I figured this out after about 5 minutes and was able to fix this :) Burning recovery discs now
If it doesn't open you don't need to open it in safe mode. Might as well run it as administrator. Right click "Run as Administrator" and that'll make it for you.

Thanks so much for this man, I've been looking for the solution to this for days! Much appreciated!
thank you sooooo much!!! i was stressing out when i didn't see it anymore but this video just made me day. ^^
Thanks for this tip. Saved me a lot of trouble!
yes; it just restores the windows operating system back onto your comp if you reformat or the hard drive crashes or something of that nature.
I did a lil research and found 2 places that seem to have the same solution. 1 site said, "The easiest way for a factory restore is hitting F9 during POST, and running the Recovery Wizard. Thanks.. just one quick note , make sure you right click on the ChangeHD.exe program and Run as Administrator. It works well, thanks.
Man you are a life saver, just had a freak outy moment. now sorted thanks to you
@ListlessExistence You are very welcome :D
@krycharts All you gotta do is right-click on the application and it should be there as an option. Mine appears at the 4th option from the top of the list, just below "open file location"

okay i got it to work , it does not say partition does not exist anymore now it says
"mount hidden partition " ?????
First of all thanks for your help. I tried running the steps but I can't find the ChangHD application. Any help or suggestions??
Trying to do the EXACT same thing on a coworkers PC, and when I browse to this location (AI Recovery) the ChangeHD application is simply not there.

Did you try burning it again or does it happen every time you try burning it?

@Jarabu930 I made an annotation for it, thanks for the reminder
When I open the AI Recovery, it says: "The factory default backup is deleted. You cannot use AI Recovery to create a backup of the factory default settings". I've tried to press f9 at boot, but it doesn't work. I have Asus N55SF, please help?
you can download it from the asus website. or I can possibly send you the files in an attachment but idk if that would work or not.
I downloaded their latest version as suggested but when I tried to reinstall it kept being interrupted and telling me that a source file was not found. Thanks for the suggestions anyway
I just found a link with it and downloaded it myself to see if it works. It's in the description.

my problem is i dont have the "ChangeHD.exe" file. where can i find it?
thanks
@maulik20091987 you mean how were you able to do that?
@rcsan12 Nice!! You're welcome, glad I could help! And thank you, haha :D
I cant get my system recovery discs at all.
I am new at this, I have GW75 laptop
nothing works for me
This version of the software don't have the "changeHD.exe" file... Upload you're full folder, please.
i have tried to do that but it says the current logged on administrator does not have administrative priviledges. what happened? I have always used this computer under this username and password as an administrator
I have one question: I have deleated by accidentally my windows 7 and recovery partition on my asus g53sw lapop and how can I back it up using asus software cd. Can I burn windows vista using unetbootin and run my cd and create recovery partition. Would it help?
I got the same problem but don't have the change HD application in the Asus AI recovery folder :S
hello, I wonder if the ai recovery burner on your computer, program files, stuck in one place, would you be willing to upload? I'm sorry, I'm using the language translation program!
i did. the link to it is in the description
i run changehd as admin and run under safe mode but nothing happen, mine is Asus S46C, windows 8
Thank you man! This was absolutely useful! :D
it says the factory default backup is deleted you cannot use AI Recovery to create a backup of the factory default settings. Do you know anything i can do??
hello, couldnt find changeHD.exe file..
upload the full software to the people. I coul not find it on the web.
@Jarabu930 it dint work but i made system image disk and system recovery bootable disk. so hows this?
A couple people had this problem but they never got back to me on my suggestions so I'm not sure if they helped or not ha. Same here, can i also ask for the changeHD.exe?
hey jarabu930, I followed your steps and after running changehd.exe and ran ai recovery, the only option i get is 'slimtype BD E DS41ES' and the status is 'no enough free disk space to save temporary files.' is that cuz there's no space in my hard drive? do i need to get a black CD and it will work? thanks a bunch
Thanks for the tip did the trick for me as well :-)
wait what did you do with the r drive?
@Jarabu930 also try doing what "jamesssl" did when at first this didnt work for him. Not sure what issue he had but he said it didnt work till he tried "change HD" in safe mode and restoring the comp. to its earliest point. look at his comment he posted about a week ago on the 3rd page.
i had the same problem, now it fix because of you. thanks pal :)
@habel7892 I didn't do anything to or with it...it just went away when I ran the "changeHD" program. It just gets hidden again I believe.
i tried this but it said that it cannot commit to unmounting it... im worried :{
But dont have a AI recovery folder in my Asus folder. why is that?
@HenriHoen your welcome! Went thru the same thing.
@mfalada Welcome :) happy to help ya
Is it working now ?

@savvydevil Welcome :D
@darulixs you are welcome :D
Never heard of that one, but ill try to figure it out

try running it in safe mode. Tell me how it works out for you, ill see if there's a different solution if that doesn't work.
I don't have a file called "change HD" so what to do now?
download from the link in the description..It might not work for windows 8. I'm sorry I'm not more knowledgeable on it..It's just something I found in my files
took about as long as this video. Under 5 min for sure but idk what factors come into play or if they matter even, like how fast your comp is.
Thank you, right clicking the program and run as admin did it for me thanks!
@Knewclear--
hello, couldnt find changeHD.exe file.. . I could not find it on the web.
can you please send it for me.
Link is in the description. Not sure if it'll work for windows 8 tho
i´m trying to download change HD application because i have the same proble like breakinmedia, but i don´t find it on web. Please anyone has the file? Thank you
I'm currently looking for the file now, ganna put a new link in the description
@SparkyRambo94 You're welcome :D
damn, my bad...I'm looking for a new link now. I'll download it myself to see if it works.
