their boat will make a really interesting case study about how those automotive batteries stand up to marine conditions. I've been really curious about that question, but so far the few tidbits you could find on the internet about such projects have been in their very early stages, and rarely more than a single post on a forum somewhere. So it will be really interesting to see youtubers document their longer term experience with the Tesla battery pack.
I've thought about this issue but I have no boat on which to try it. I think I would build an enclosure that would stand up to complete submerging and group the modules in banks, in aforementioned waterproof enclosures, that are small enough to manhandle if needed. All that in addition to every precaution in the book and beyond to ward off slowly advancing causes for corrosion and whatnot. Also some implementation details that possibly make or break that critical backbone...
Sailing the Space Between has been an early pioneer of using car lithium batteries in sailboats, for various reasons it's taken them several iterations before they've been comfortable that they got it right
I was thinking about this myself. Im an electrical engineer and did my Electric vehicle course before the pandemic. If you get a fire on an EV battery you don't fight it you just evacuate, when the fire service come they put a chain around the vehicle and drag it out the way then just leave it to burn its self out for the next week or so. They cant extinguish it on land, on a boat maybe use explosives to jettison your entire battery pack through the hull seems extreme but that's all i could think of that's guaranteed to work. I love Teslas, and I love what these guys have done they clearly know what their doing, I haven't got the balls to have that much lithium under me at sea though.
@@sietuuba exactly he doesn't mention how much sailing they have done and the conditions....I'm really interested in the safety precautions they have..... Day sailing is one thing crossing oceans is another....I wish them the best....
Any issue with those batteries and the entire boat goes up in flame. Those modules have a cooling loop that isnt being used and the BMS is assuming its used for a car application (high C rate). I personally would only put LFP's in a boat for the added safety and they are getting really cheap (~$150 per kwh for the cell).
Boat yards are boat life, every 12 months or so, haul out, anti foul, service to props, shafts bearings, pumps, standing rig, running rig, sails, engines BUT as others have said "there's nothing better than messing around with sail boats". Great interview with the Dauntless crew.
When I watched you party on the Super Yachats I thought just that your a party guy but I've changed my mind. You are a very good interviewer and extremely knowledgeable about this. I did restore a 1978 VW WESTFALIA CAMPER and after that I realized I need more room for this old body.
Nothing excessive about 5kw of pv. This is the future. The way that it works together is the innovative step. Smart systems that tell all the compressors to 'share' the load and NOT kick in at the same time etc. Control and monitoring systems need to be developed. And redundancy is the key. A single massive inverter, not idea in salty lightning risk environments. Multiple strings of pv, independent supply systems will make it more robust. You guys and others bringing up live-aboard standards to modern house like lifestyles is a big important step. You are raising the bar and should feel really proud of your contribution to the lifestyle. And your learnings and mistakes will be important experiences for those coming after you. The gear is getting cheaper and better. I'm so glad to finally see decent pv and battery systems being employed. A kW of wind would be good too.. I hope you have a way of shutting down and isolating some of your solar for when it fails, and it will, big fire risk in that much dc in those environments. But how you manage the wiring, connections, and equipment failures will lead the way for others. Dont trust anything, develop emergency procedures for arcs everywhere. Isolators everywhere, and extinguishers. Great to see. And you made me cry. Thanks for the inspiration.

I'm 70 yours old and I did not miss a thing, I've done it all with few regrets and I don't feel like there was something I should have done. I don't own a sail boat and never have but I never wanted to either but I have owned several airplanes. I live on the Gulf coast and have sailed but it was something I never was really interested in doing however I enjoy watching people like this and their love affair with sailing and sailboats. I worked on several large sailboats doing repairs in the 80's that were equipped with the Pathfinder Sailboat Engines. These engines were in cramped spaces and the wiring on these high dollar boats was a nightmare ,wire color would change several times in one run. Anyway, life has not passed me by and I tried or did it all.
I love this episode. No matter what your goal is in life, to accomplish it you will need to make a lot of sacrifices along the way. I have been a wealth manager for over 20 years and I can tell you, the accumulation of wealth requires a lot of sacrifices and self discipline. Same with rebuilding a salvage boat, it those requires a lot of sacrifices and self discipline. The most important thing is to stay healthy so you can enjoy the fruit of your sacrifices. Again I love the message on this episode, thank you! Happy sailing!

Watched all your videos in a about 2 weeks 😉 looking forward to seeing what’s next! Looking forward to getting on our boat in Georgian Bay :)
You didn’t fix a boat, the boat fixed you! Love your channel.
Wow, what a super nice family!
Fantastic episode - you do a great job of putting a story together and love the whale footage ! Seems like it was some sort of cosmic reward for all the year of hard work of the Dauntless crew ?? I'm subscribing now!

My family went sailing many years ago. Taught the kids ourself.
Our boat had most of the comforts but there were many out there that had far less and were having just as much fun.
Just go. Don't be misled into thinking you need these perfect boats.
