I've never heard a rock/pop singer with such perfect pitch. Never misses a note, spot on. And how can anyone so insanely talented even exist? Singer, lyricist, arranger, pianist, showman - if he was only ONE of them he'd be amazing, but all FIVE? How can one person be so musical?
LOL, you can hear Billy missing notes pretty often in the live performances, especially in the later part of the shows as his voice gets tired. It's normal, no autotune.
@@MatthewBillyJoelBootlegs yes and I think his best songwriting is in that period '77-83 with those 5 albums. There was some good stuff before and after but it was more patchy, so that's his golden era
This concert singlehandedly turned me from a casual greatest hits fan to a genuine hardcore fan. It would be a perfect concert if the encores were included (Scenes From An Italian Restaurant, Get It Right The First Time, Souvenir).
In 1979, Iran was proving America to be very weak, most likely a big reason why Carter lost the election . Billy gives the “Iranian salute” . Too bad he isn’t likely to do that today, as it is unlikely any entertainer would dare do today,Iran is still a big enemy of the u.s. but it’s politically incorrect,or “not woke “ to say it . I like Billy, he’s funny, gifted and I have all his albums on vinyl and cd , since 84 I’ve seen him at least 10 times, even met him once briefly and have his autograph. I like him, but I wish he and others would speak out against our enemies today .
Wow, does this bring back a flood of memories of a great concert! Thanks for posting this. I saw Billy Joel at the Nashville Municipal Auditorium on Thanksgiving night 11/22/1979, only three days before this Houston concert, so this is practically the same show. As in the Houston show, the opening number was 'Only the Good Die Young.' And after that number, Billy gave a similar greeting and gesture to the crowd: "Happy Thanksgiving, Nashville! And here's my Iranian Salute!" Although Billy's salute to Iran was a fun, lighthearted jab and a huge crowd pleaser, in retrospect it was a bittersweet occasion. Iran had illegally taken the 52 American Hostages less than three weeks earlier, on 11/4/1979. Hardly anyone could have imagined at the time that the Hostages would not be released until 14 months later, or that 44 years later the insane Iranian government would continue to grow progressively into the menace to world peace and state sponsor of terrorism that is is today. Sorry to end on such a serious note. This is not to put a damper on the memories of a great show by a great performer and his superb band.
@DaveinMilwaukee My Vancouver neighborhood is dominated now by people either directly from Iran or descended from people who came from there. I graduated high school in 1979. I’ve returned to Vancouver after 30 years in East Asia and nowadays when I see old friends I sometimes say…imagine if I told you when we finished school that within six months an event on the other side of the world would fundamentally change this place for the rest of our lives. Anyway, I saw Billy Joel on the Glass Houses tour at what was arguably his peak. It reminds me a lot of this show. He could really bring it.
Good stuff - don’t apologize. At this point the reference and historical perspective is priceless to those of us from that time. Most of the world wouldn’t understand the context, but here it’s as appreciated as it is right on point.
After Glass Houses debuted You May Be Right, in subsequent concerts after the album was released, a glass shatter sound effect would play, then Liberty (or Chuck, currently) would count 4 by hitting the snare and then launch into the song.

Him sitting down or running around while performing this song would be equally amazing!! I also hate that official concert videos cut more than 75% of the show out. I guarantee every fan wants to see the entire show & would willingly pay a bit more to see it. The reason they don’t release the entire show is because it would cost them a lil more $ for additional tape. As if they’d lose money doing it. The sales would make that extra money spent on more tape irrelevant! How don’t they see that?

This is a gem from the late '70s when Billy was at his creative best with a crisp voice.
