  • I started having a look at the rear brake because it locked up on me yesterday, I expected that the pistons in the caliper would need cleaning but this didn't resolve the issue, new fluid didn't either so I've ordered a new rear master cylinder and will be continuing with it as soon as it arrives.

Often when you get a freeze up as you describe, it's the actuation rod is not at specification and the freeplay is not set correctly so the fluid has no room to expand.

Its a old vid but I would have attempted adjustment and servicing before replacing.

Had the same issue and same had to replace the master and the caliper. Had bought from someone and they said all was needed was a break bleed but felt way too loose, once I investigated more it was more expensive and time consuming than a break bleed! Thanks for the vid!

Yes I'm afraid this happens alot with second hand bikes, people say things like non runner, just needs carb clean, however it can always be something else. People selling don't seem to realise that in the endit can cost alot in parts and time to get these issues fixed. I like honest adverts and am always honest in mine.

motorcycle rescuer The bike I bought the guy said the exact same thing, “Probably just needs a carb clean”. There’s only one issue with that statement, it’s a fuel injected bike lol. I got the bike super cheap though and I knew going into the purchase that this was the case.

@@FuttBuckerByMutt nice, you got a touch there then. I love the old just needs a carb clean. I mean it takes 20 minutes, bif it just needs a clean you will get it done or do it yourself lol.

If the back brake is not adjusted properly (too tight) it heats up the brake fluid, causing heat, expansion, which clamps on the disk, causing it to lock up. When it cools it releases. Adjust the brakes properly, this happened to me on my monster.

The rear master cylinder had broken and needed changing, in the end a new master cylinder solved the issue.
