Last year I got the Pagani Design "Seamaster 007". Not because I want to "show off" but because of what I got. It has an NH-35 Movement, ceramic bezel, sapphire crystal good Finnish and a very nice look. All that for 100€. As a student this was a no brainer. And I honestly do not care if people call me faker because of it.

Great review. I enjoy learning about these knockoffs of drastically overpriced pieces.
In case you didn't know "genuine leather" is not a good thing. It's a grade of leather as opposed to what it seems like it would be. It's the plywood equivalent where there's scraps of leather mixed with (in essence) saw dust then glued and press-heated into form. It will decay quickly, especially with any moisture.
If you want a good leather look for "top grain" or "full grain"

  • @HSalamista
    @HSalamista 3 ปีที่แล้ว +39

One other remark: The particular choice was not a lucky one. Try to stack up a Tisell, San Martin, Steel dive, Proxima and Pagani Design (not this Pagrne…) against the watches they are imitating and what you will find is, that they do a pretty decent job in scratching that itch for a DJ or a Sub or a high end Seiko. And for the Seiko part: They use Sapphire (not hardlex) and they are aligned, which Seiko fails to deliver :-(
So for a fraction of a price you get a well made watch with a reliable Seiko movement.

@@DarthMalaks_Missing_Lower_Jaw at the end of the day, my reaction to your comment is: who cares? The majority of humans out on the street don’t pay attention to watches. Probably 98% of passersby won’t know any luxury brands (besides Rolex), much less recognize any original and iconic (to us geeks) designs. So I say: let people wear what they want on their wrists. I have a fake Nautilus (which I’m wearing right now ha). I’ve owned it for a year now, and the only person who noticed it was a fellow watch enthusiast I hung out with… yesterday. So yeah, no one cares what I’m wearing. I also own a (real) Orient Bambino, and a Seiko Alpinist which I love too. So I appreciate many affordable designs by reputable brands in my price bracket. But while I own those, I won’t begrudge anyone who wants to see what it “feels like” or might “look like” to own a luxury piece they’d otherwise never allow themselves to splurge on. It doesn’t harm anyone. It also doesn’t affect the market share of giants like Patek or Rolex, since they limit the number of pieces they pump into the market anyway, and small-time potential buyers (like me) could’ve never gotten one of those anyway. It’s fun to wear my fake Nautilus because nobody in my life cares what it is, and I can get to see what it looks like on my wrist :)

      3. I prefer to put that money into a watch that has its own original design. If I can't afford something that I really, really want, I scrimp and save and work my ass off to eventually get it, not take a short-cut and buy a knock off.

I’ve never understood this mentality of calling out fakes/homages. Does it make you feel superior? Does it somehow stop people from buying more fakes/homages? As far as I can tell, no. So, why? All it does is make the person calling others out look foolish.

I'm totally fine with homage watches if the design patent has run out. Most of these Swiss marketing companies (getting tough to call them watch companies) are only iterating on back catalog designs from the 60s and 70s and should be on the hook for not innovating.

There's no such thing as a design patent. Patents are only for technical innovations, and they have a limited shelf life. I want great innovations to end up in more watches. There is trade dress, which protects the Royal Oak in the US for example (established by lawsuit). But a design is really free for all if the company doesn't bother to protect it.

    • @chrismcdonald6942
      @chrismcdonald6942 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

@@johnanth you're wrong. In the United States, a design patent is a form of legal protection granted to the ornamental design of a functional item. Design patents are a type of industrial design right. Ornamental designs of jewelry, furniture, beverage containers and computer icons are examples of objects that are covered by design patents. Trade dress usually refers to packaging, or distinct colours used. It's not only doubtful, but proven that trade dress doesn't apply to something like the design of the submariner or ap royal oak as there are so many homages that are not being litigated.

I have a Cronos GMT watch, which is a shameless knockoff of the Pepsi GMT Master, but it is of quite high quality, running about 4 sec/day slow with zero beat error for several months now. If she gets lucky and gets a San Martin without any problems, she might be impressed by them. Personally, I own 5 San Martin Watches, every single one of them have problems. Misaligned bezel inserts, Misaligned cyclops, an unhealthy SW200 movement in one of them, and almost all of them the crown is wobbly and the stems are not cut to the proper length. Oh, I also have the Vintage 38mm diver, the lume on the hands has deteriorated within months of owning it. It was like pulling teeth to get them to simply send me a new set of hands. As for the SW200 movement, I put it on the time Grapher and it was at -40 seconds a day, I opened up the case back to see it was advanced some, I maxed it out and now it's at -22 seconds a day. When unscrewing the crown, it doesn't automatically let you wind it, you have to pull the crown out a little to get it to catch.

And don't think that high dollar mechanical Automatic watches do not have problems keeping time with the watch having to be sent back time after time to the authorised dealer to get it fixed (in house calibre that they wouldn't replace) until the owner just gave up and now the watch just resides in the back of a drawer.

Your self awareness regarding your own Seiko homage is inspiring. I have always felt that those who look down on homages and "clomages" to be a bit silly: most watches borrow heavily from others, and we can't all buy a Rolex Submariner or Daytona. It is also highly convenient to have a cheaper version of your main watch that you can bang around. That said, the thing the haters all say does have some truth to it: if you are buying an homage to cure the itch for the real deal, it will only work for a little while. You will ultimately seek out the watch you really want.

I tend to disagree. I bought quite a few watches from AliExpress and almost all of them cost well below 200$.
The Aquaracer lookalike from the video cost me well below 100$ including shipping. And the bang for the buck is quite good actually. Sapphire crystal, ceramic bezel insert, solid links and endlinks, a milled clasp...
I don't know a microbrand where you get all of this for such a low price let alone a well established watch company. Try getting a Seiko with sapphire crystal and a decent bracelet for under 500$ and you'll know what I mean. Surely these watches are all "heavily inspired" if not plain copy's of more famous watches but they are certainly worth the money in terms of quality.
If you really want a extraordinarily well made and just as well specd watch look at San Martin. I will say you are hard pressed to find a better watch for a similar price.

The NH35 and 36 movements are awesome workhorses for the money, I can dial one in to +-2 sec on my chronograph. The movements don't need work very often and I'd rather have a homage any day with thousands in my pocket then on my wrist. Plus I don't need to worry about being robbed with a homage watch on, I can wear it anywhere and leave my money in the bank where it's safe.

Jenni is right, and I say this as an owner of a few homage watches. These Chinese brands with weird names are a genre of their own when it comes to watches, and the quality will actually vary based on what brand it says on the dial. Yes, they do seem to "borrow" a lot of parts from each other, and I have no evidence against that some of these brands comes from the same people at the same factory. For me I did a lot of research before buying the watches I have (both of them from San Martin, arguably the best of these brands, especially when it comes to QC), and I am very pleased with what I got. The NH35 is a very reliable movement, and the bezel action on my San Martin SN017 is on par with a $5000 Omega (the sound is a tiny bit different, but I genuinely can't feel a difference when comparing the two), and the satin finish on the watch and bracket is absolutely incredible considering this is a $230 watch. I bought it only because I like the Submariner, but I am miles from being able to afford one, so this was a good alternative I felt, even though there are many other nice dive watches I could have gotten for a similar price as the San Martin.

Based on the price limitations you were operating under, many of these were not the best brands of homage watches. The Cadisen was probably the best, and they actually have some watches that are not homages. If you go to Amazon and look up San Martin, they are very good, though more expensive. They often win lume competitions on watch channels, have water resistance from 200m to 1000 m, and offer high beat movement options, such as the ST 5000, or the Sellita SW 200 Swiss movement. They quite often out perform micro brands at 1/2 to 2/3 the price. You can check out I Like Watches or Just One More Watch for San Martin reviews, though many channels have reviewed them. The blue paint on the crown is just a protective layer that scratches off with a fingernail pretty easily. I build my own watches by buying the different parts (movement, case, dial, hands) and putting them together. The crowns on steel cases usually have the blue paint for some reason. I think it is just protection, but it could also be how the manufacturer indicates that the case has been inspected or something.

My normal watch is a 47 mm, but I have a few that venture into the low to mid 50 mm watches. But I actually have the wrist to make it look normal! And my wife loves my larger watches, and says the smaller watches look like an old grandpa's watch! I tend to agree with her! If I had that kind of cash laying around in a 401 k ...there are a couple of IWC's pilot's watches I would love to own. But that's about it!

Here's my guidelines/tips for buying Homage watches. (I'm not a big homage watch collector, but I do own a few, and they're not just random picks).
My first tip is that you should always look up the watch on TH-cam first before buying, and make sure to watch some videos/reviews that are not sponsored or affiliated. Secondly, check out the best alternatives. There's usually more than one good candidate for each model (let's say a Sub-homage), but for some reason you don't like the big, hexagonal logo of the best one, you might find more joy in a slightly less rated variant. So even though the best bang for buck is this or that, make your pick where you feel your taste meets the honest reviews. And if you don't find the perfect homage on Amazon or Ali Express, you can always check out the vast universe of Seiko mods, and thus might even get something slightly more custom made to your liking, and with a familiar brand on the dial. Also, very few of these homage watches will maintain much second hand value, so always consider that you'll lose a chuck of the money you pay for it.
Also keep an eye out for what movement the watch has, is it a Seiko, Miota, or a Seagull it's usually a more safe bet in regards if ypu want to keep the watch for decades (as a new movement is most often cheaper than servicing the original).
There's also a bunch of micro brands and Homage brands that sre not on Ali or Amazon, stay on the lookout for thwse as some of these are quite good.
And lastly, always remember that gold plating and such will always be of a lesser standard on more affordable watches. Don't have big expectations, especially on two-tone watches and bracelets.
Right now, I'm kinda debating with myself if I should get built a rose gold Nautilus/Aquanaut watch with either a black or olive dial and a tropical rubber strap for it. It'll mainly be a home-alone piece, and I don't consider it as any guilt or shame around this as I'll probably never gonna afford an actual rosegold Patek.

Let's be honest. Not everyone could afford luxury watches. I think these watches are fine not because of their brand but because the built quality and materials for the price. Seiko can't even provide that kind of price with the same specs.

Hi Jenni, glad to see you again. Did you change the contrast on your video? It seems a bit darker than usual.

I would prefer one of these "tributes" over the actual fakes any day. That being said, I don't think they're for me though.

I'm tempted by a Pagani Design Royal Oak. For under 100 dollars on sale, it's a great looking watch, and gives me the Royal Oak look that you can't really get until you move up to the ML Aikon (Tissot PRX is a bit too dressy to be a RO)

For those who may not know, "genuine leather" is a trade term used for the worst quality "leather" since it just means leather is present.

Utter nonsense. Not used in industry and doesn’t signify quality.

When buying these watches you don't buy the automatic movements unless it's a seiko but non the less the Japanese qaurtz is the way to go and also thinner and more reliable .
The BUREI "qaurtz " is amazing ! I own 2 of them now for over 5 years and no problem at all. The burei is beautiful !

As a die hard Nomos fan, I feel kind of sick that I don’t hate that copy. It’s obvious to a fan where the deficiencies are, but as a stand alone cheap alternative, it’s not bad. 😐😞😢

There was a similar homage a few years ago, "Rodina" and Sea-gull makes the same or similar. They are all probably the same watch

Probably we can say that Nomos Tangente is Stowa Antea' knock-off. The same is true regarding FEICE. Right?
