Why God Became Man and What It Did to Demons

  • Why did God become a man? We’re used to hearing what Christ’s incarnation/death/resurrection did for us, but we don’t often hear what His work did to the demonic powers. We’re used to answering the question solely with reference to matters of substitution, satisfaction, debts (of honor, wrath, or obedience?), so we can lose sight of the ancient Christian worldview and the entire cosmic drama at work between God and ‘the gods.’ In this episode, we flip the table-from metaphysical to apocalyptic- to see a whole other dimension of the atoning work of Christ, through the eyes of Satan himself.

    I’m an evangelical(ex-catholic) and, thanks to you and some other catholic TH-camrs, I’m in a process of going back to the RC church instead of the EO church. But it’s not easy because there’s not many good catholic churches in my region. Could you make a video on how a catholic can navigate the present crisis in the RC church? Another suggestion would be a video on catholic devotion that are the object of critics from EO, like eucharistic adoration and the Sacred Heart. God bless you!

      Sometimes there are dry seasons within a local parish. However, there are always, always some buds that need you. If you're confident in your faith and you dive into first your parish where God placed you perhaps you can be a little light!
      On the other hand if you are treading carefully & get upset by so many sinners you will meet versus the joy of Christ in the most kind of quiet, perhaps at times so not over the top they've stopped...
      Then perhaps a good Dominican retreat, followed by quiet time in front of the Blessed Eucharist - even 5 mins to say 'Hello' gives infinitely more than that tiny moment.
      Don't get caught up in Liturgical nonsense wars - it's debilitating and takes the focus away from God & Neighbour. Whatever Catholic Church you are in look for the Tabernacle and know He is there, fulfilling His promise in the most meek way for our sake! That's Love!

      Even when we have died, our bodies should be treated with due respect, in part because our lives are not our own. We do not create ourselves. To treat our own bodies as something without value or dignity is a perversion.

      Strangely enough! What you described is a sacrament in Hinduism.
      Each one of us hopes to be cremated after death & have his/her ashes scattered.
      Burials are considered dirty,ignoble & space consuming as you have basically a decaying corpse, source of both physical & spiritual uncleanness.

    Fascinating! Had always heard this theory that Satan despised and envied Man, but had never heard the whole story with all the ancient sources that provide context to obscure Scripture passages mentioning angels.
    Reminds me of the theory that unclean spirits are dead Nephilim and that is what is mentioned in 1 Pt 3:19.

    I came out if a hispanic pentecostal church and one of the things that they don’t do partake in the Lord’s supper. I did inquire to pastor about and his answer was very troubling. He said that the reason they don’t partake in it is so the members of the church vainly do it out of habit. Which to me is truly sad. Peace and grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all!

    "Truly he goes to seek out our first parent like a lost sheep; he wishes to visit those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death. He goes to free the prisoner Adam and his fellow-prisoner Eve from their pains, he who is God, and Adam's son.
    The Lord goes in to them holding his victorious weapon, his cross. When Adam, the first created man, sees him, he strikes his breast in terror and calls out to all: 'My Lord be with you all.' And Christ in reply says to Adam: ‘And with your spirit.Â’ And grasping his hand he raises him up, saying: ‘Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give you light.
    ‘I am your God, who for your sake became your son, who for you and your descendants now speak and command with authority those in prison: Come forth, and those in darkness: Have light, and those who sleep: Rise....
    I posted the cherubim to guard you as they would slaves; now I make the cherubim worship you as they would God."

    This isn't intended as a criticism.

      @TheCatholicBrothers  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

      Not among the cradle Orthodox Christians that I know, but it is definitely deeply imbedded in the early eastern fathers writings and in the praxis of Orthodox rites, so it’s absolutely front and center in the Tradition. It is in Catholicism as well, but among most individual Catholics, not so much. Both Orthodox and Catholics have a long way to go with catechesis of their respective flocks.

    One thing I will forever be greatful for in my baptist upbringing under my mother was her constant talks about the realities of the demonic. I'd say this video unfortunately has the issue that has been noted in many many instances of catholics talking about demons: putting side by side solid fact with what is at best informed speculation. I'll keep this brief, but basically if you look at cases where reputable and orthodox exorcists speak at length about their views of demons and how they act on the world, you get really different and irreconcilable opinions. That's because there's not enough work done in discernign what the evidence proves, and what it merely points to. Yes, maybe this transgender movement is demonic, or maybe there's another better explanation, like the effects of pornography on the psyche of young people.
    Besides that, I really enjoyed the episode, again I just think there should have been more work to sort the speculation from the facts. Even that beautiful reflection on the life of Adam is just speculation, and it lost popularity. Maybe because it was a fluke, maybe there was some good reason for it, like a conflict with the demonology proposed and another school that took its place later.

    Jesus had said, "The slave does not know what his master is about... " To which Marx, Mohammed or Satan could object: Nobody knows what the Master is about more than the slave! Even the elder brother of the prodigal son said to his father, "All these years have I been a slave to you..." But your point is, a slave (in this case, the fallen angel) cannot know about his Master what a son knows about his father. Jesus came, as prophets foretold, to reconcile sons to fathers. "I no longer call you slaves..." The bond of filial love is stronger than the bondage of slavery.

    Interesting video, but how does this square with the more common Catholic tradition that it was envy of Mary that caused the fall?
    There's a lot of scholarship there, that Satan realized he would never be as beautiful, that he should be the vessel of incarnation etc.

    • @TheCatholicBrothers
      @TheCatholicBrothers  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Which sources are you referring to?- because the fathers of the church, nearly unanimously, opine/teach that Satan knew nothing of the incarnation or Mary until the events themselves took place (and even then, he was not quite aware of Jesus’ precise identity until the resurrection). That Satan was hoodwinked is one of the earliest theories of ‘atonement.’

    • @nealkriesterer
      @nealkriesterer 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's a good question; I've heard it many times from other Catholics and never thought to look into their sources, the reason being that's always the answer I heard and there didn't seem to be any alternate theories.
      Looking into it briefly now, the Mary connection is detailed in the book Mystical City of God by the incorrupt Mary of Agreda, circa 1600s. I am unsure if the concept is older than that.

      I think it is in Gen. Where God says "I will put enmety between you and the woman, between her seed and your seed and she shall bruise your head and you shall bruise her heel" To me that seems to put Satan's envy is primarily against Our Lady Mary. Also I think there are more references in the Apocalypse Gospel narratives Please help.

    Thanks guys. A few pennies dropped for me listening to this talk in relation to why Satan hates the flesh. Weird and startling insight too into the dipiction of ancient pagan 'gods' - so true that they distort the body of men and are half man half beast! Satan must love debasing the flesh indeed! Excellent subject for Holy Saturday & Easter Sunday. Thankyou Lord Jesus for giving us your Body, Blood, Soul & Divinity in the most Sacred Eucharist - and restoring our bodies, hearts and minds in doing so. Hey guys…
    Great video again.
    I asked this question before (video of exorcisms/michael heiser- divine council)…
    Doesn‘t the Catholic Church teach that there was only ONE Fall of the angels?
    I read „The Unseen Realm“ years ago and if I remember correctly, then in Heiser‘s view there were at least TWO occurences of an angelic fall!
    Can you commemt on this and clarify please?
    Would be much appreciated!
    Have a good Sunday

    • @TheCatholicBrothers
      @TheCatholicBrothers  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey! Do you have a specific church document in mind where it is taught that there is only one fall of the angels? I’d be curious to see it.
      My personal understanding (take it as you will):
      As far as I have seen, it is an open question. (The Catechism, for instance, doesn’t touch it).
      It’s also not clear if, on the “multiple falls” theory, we’re talking about distinct falls of different angels, or successive falls of the same portion of angels, who eventually fall so far that their repentance becomes impossible. (If I have the liberty, I would tend to favor the latter view). Just as there is a certain point at which angels attain a blessedness which cannot be reversed, there is a certain point at which angels attain a level of wretchedness which cannot be reversed. The point of no return for those angels of old appears to be the sin that 2Peter refers to.
      At this stage in salvation history, I don’t believe blessed angels can fall nor that fallen angels can repent (hence, Catechism 393). A series of past events and interactions between heaven and earth have permanently sealed angelic fate(s).
      Now humanity’s destiny is being played out.
      But again, a lot of these things are open questions, and all I can say is that a lot of what we’ve been presenting on the channel can be found in many ancient Jewish apocalyptic and Patristic sources.

    • @Pukhelykopter
      @Pukhelykopter 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TheCatholicBrothers Hey…
      Thank you for your quick response.
      Unfortunately I can‘t point to any document. I heard it on an episode of Catholic Answers if I remember correctly, but it was definitely Tim Staples making the statement that the catholic church teaches that there was only one angelic fall. Probably he was influenced/informed by Thomas Aquinas. The argument is that God was showing the angels in a vision what He was going to do (creating and becoming a human). The response from the angels triggered either the beatific vision or eternal damnation, hence only possibly one fall.
      But of course I don‘t know if that’s correct and since you guys are the historians you‘d probably kmow…
      Thanks again. I appreciate you and your videos very much!!
