Learned a tremendous amount about religion in the public/ private life of romans, and how that shaped their view on early christians. Have been following this channel for a couple of years now, and I never leave a video without learning something new. You are two are a couple of beauts.

This is such a fantastic lecture. I just recently discovered you, and as someone who went from l Roman Pagan -> Anglican -> Catholic Ordinariate and still styles himself as an amateur ‘Romanist’ I learnt a great deal from this!

Thanks for getting back to it, guys. Just in time, too. My husband bought me the book, “Christianity and the Roman Empire,” by Paul Allard. I don’t know the author or the book, but listening to these two newest episodes have whetted my appetite for it. :)

Can you do some historical work on the Assumption of Mary? And are you familiar with Transitus Mariae?

I remember watching this some time ago, I heard someone say something about the Roman’s hymning to plato? If this isn’t mistaken, can I please get a source on that; it’s quite interesting to me.

Recommendations for anthologies of the writings of the early Church fathers would be welcome, as well as histories of the period. Have either of you published articles or books on this subject? I am watching your content, naturally, but it is one thing to hear about the pre-Nicean, Nicean, and post-Nicean fathers, it is another to read them. So the question is where to start...

Hey there! If you are truly just starting out, I would say start with Michael Holmes’ edition of the apostolic fathers. This is a “go-to” for the late first and early second century fathers. Great introductions to the texts, Greek included with the translation, and a great, standard selection for this era. After you read that, come back and we can recommend where to go next.

Now fellas, be honest with me... did you really just make a reference to the SpongeBob SquarePants movie in the second part of your multi-hour lesson on Roman culture in the early Christian centuries? 😂

Can you do all of the councils specifically next.

      The ecumenical councils?

@TheCatholicBrothers yea like a playlist specifically for ecumenical councils. I'm struggling to find good information on all of them. There is one guy on sensus fedilum channel that does all of them but his accent is so thick and he assumes the listener knows something about them. He's so hard to listen to. Yall would do a much better job explaining what the council declared and the context surrounding the council.

@@freedomfields5569 are you a reader or a listener? If you’re a reader, best book to start with is
“The First Seven Ecumenical Councils (325-787): Their History and Theology” by Leo Donald Davis

@TheCatholicBrothers i have 4 kids. I no longer have downtime to read anything i want to read. But I do like to listen while I do chores. I do usually order books to loan to other people.
Thank you so much. I'll see if I can find it on audible.

It’s as if, in the plan of God, he gathered all the gods of the nations into one religion (the Roman religion) so He could destroy them all at once and replace them with the True religion: Christianity.

Hence, the “fullness of time” is when Jesus came. I do recall that some Patristic biblical writers make this point in their commentaries. 👍🏻

A suggestion: I've studied latin so I can piece together the words you're using, but I'd imagine it would benefit some people if you put on screen the spelling of the latin words you're using, it can be hard for non native english speakers to make out these unfamiliar words with no standardized pronounciation...
