      It's actually a custom made drum kit with some pedals to replace what his left arm would normally play and the right arm does what it used to. I met him and saw the kit close up in the late 90s...really sweet young man and incredible kit made from primarily his ideas and design as he was recuperating.

    The guys in Def Leppard are stand up guys. They put everything on hold and supported their friend until he could play again after losing his arm in a car accident. Too bad all bands can't be like this.

      Rick Allen losing his arm wouldn't be the last time that they'd do this either.
      They did something similar when Joe Elliott had contracted the mumps twice, which rendered him sterile. They'd gone through Steve Clark's losing his battle with alcoholism. They'd supported Rick Savage when he'd contracted Bells Palsy

      @@karlsmith2570 I saw that too!! Just wondering. Did you get a rude comment from an ASSBAG going by name “ coot1925” or something like that? Apparently Rick Allen is a very basic drummer. And he’s been a drummer for 40 years, and can drum better with his one arm than Rick could with two. About most disrespectful thing I’ve ever heard. And welcome to the world of The Thunder God, Rick Allen, one of the most inspirational stories ever…..lost his arm in a car accident just after the band got hot, the band refused to give up on him, and waited for him to get well and rejoin before recording Hysteria. His drum kit is part standard and part electronic, and he uses his foot to play more than just the kick drum….revolutionary at the time.

    • @kperry1969
      @kperry1969 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @jp3813 it's just a personal preference. There is clearly more technology at play here and songs after the first three albums, maybe partly to compensate for Rick Allen having to use feet much more, as well as rock music evolving (not for the better) in the mid 80s. Even Judas Priest went kind of Def Leppard's wussy turn after the brilliance of screaming for vengeance and defenders of the faith. Less rocking, more synthesizer was just the thing. 1984 is absolutely amazing, but compared to all VH prior to Diver Down, it possesses a lot less nastiness, particularly Fair Warning. So in summary, just personal taste for the earlier (the subsequent stuff is still really good), overall seismic shift in music halfway through the decade, and as with everything, MONEY

    Rick Allen loosing his arm did change the sound of the band. Joe Elliot said, "We went from those busy drum fills to the boom boom kack drum fills". It definitely moved them more into a pop sound. They had commercial songs and albums before Hysteria and had already sold millions of records but Hysteria was on another level. In the words of Mutt Lang "it was all killer, no filler". It was not only one of the best albums of the 80s. I think it's a masterpiece and one of the best records ever made... period. i remember when this happened; i was 14 and waas a big fan og Pyromania by that time and understood that Rick allen was out of a job. That their drummer had lost their arm, and everyone wondered what they were going to do. When they didn't replace anybody, and Rick came out with one arm, but drumming like he always did.. we carried on and incorporated the knowledge as normal. So I"m always surprised when ppl don't know about the drummer, and how amazing this man was, to learn how to drum with one arm. Plus, he kept his job and that's really the important part. Most people back in the day wanted bands to stay together.. we wanted all original members of bands to partake in the success overall.. it doesn't always happen for some.

    great reaction guys... def leopard is much more of a rock band than a metal band. they were my favorite band through high school and college... "pyromania", "hysteria" were their most popular albums but all are great. what made def leopard so unique and popular vs many other bands of the time was the use of melodies throughout their songs. it was common theme of their iconic producer "mutt lange" who also produced bryan adams, ac/dc and shania twain (his former wife). the details and melodies keep songs in your head even after they are over... they also bring in a higher percentage of females which was rare for rock bands. the drummer rick allen lost his arm in a car accident. this caused a long delay in the release of "hysteria" as he recuperated and learned to use a special drum set while the band was determined to stay together. other popular songs include "bringing home the heatbreak (v2)", "photograph", "armageddon it (LV)", "hysteria" (LV) and "lets get rocked" which won an animation award at the time. they were also one first bands to do their concerts "in the round" on a 360 degree stage... enjoy! 😎

    Great reaction !! In the 80's the glam bands were bands like Poison, Motley Crue, Guns n Roses, Whitesnake and Def Leppard. Your metal bands in the 80's were bands like Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax, Judas Priest. Good catch regarding the one armed drummer. The drummer Rick Allen lost his arm in a car accident on New Years Eve in 1984 !!

    The Hysteria album, like you said, is when they went more commercial. The band was in some serious debt at the time and needed a hugely successful album just to break even. This song was the first single off of that album I believe and this song alone catapulted them up the charts. Their first 3 albums are definitely more hard rock. I wouldn't categorize them as heavy metal at all. But their first 3 albums are by far better in my opinion. "Bringing on the Heartbreak, Foolin', Photograph, Rock of Ages, Wasted, On Through the Night, No, No, No," the list goes on.

    I wasnt into Def Leppard till this song, it was huge at the time, their sticking with the band mate, putting their career on hold till he healed and learned to play with his feet and etc to compensate for the loss always gave me a ton of respect for them.

    Rick lost his arm in a car accident years ago. The band refused to give up on him and gave him as much time as he needed to come back. He now plays on a custom kit primarily with his feet. As far as them being glam metal, that was the error that they came up in but I never really considered them to be glam. Metal is such. They’re much more down to earth much more raw. They were the guys who were up on stage and ripped jeans and T-shirts they were never really about the image the way a lot of the glam bands were. if you want to go back away, their pyromania album was really good and I would say rock of ages is a good place to start action not words is always been one of my favorites, fool, and was another big hit. This song, although it was a huge hit Doesn’t really sound like a lot of the other stuff. It does have that kind of structure that it’s kind of totally focussed on the drums. You could check out something like animal, women, love bites, hysteria. And if you want a ballad from way back bring it on the heartbreak is a good one from the earlier albums and it’s pure 80s ballad.

    Def Leppard’s producer was Mutt Lange who also produced Bryan Adams’ 1991 album “Waking Up The Neighbours”. I was a huge fan of Bryan and listening to Def Leppard feels bit nostalgic as it sounds very familiar to me due to a similar sound those two had whilst working with Mutt. It’s like his signature sound.

    I don't know if i would classify Def Leppard as METAL, that seems like an exaggeration. But one of the better Hard Rock bands of the early-to-mid 80s. I think "Hysteria" came out in 87, and it seemed as though they were releasing singles from it every few weeks. Definitely the high point of their career, this album was massive. I prefer their earlier stuff, but they are still together to this day, rockin' & touring.

  • @joelhammond4162
    @joelhammond4162 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Producer John "Mutt" Lange was/is a famous, well known producer. Early Def Leppard drew a lot of camparisons to AC/DC, then they shared the same producer. John later went on to produce and then eventually marry and divorce Shania Twain. Most people would not necessarily draw the connection from Def Leppard to Shania Twain. But once you know and listen carefully you can start to see and recognize his influence and how it carries over regardless of genre. Mutt is I believe a musical genius who could probably help anyone have a hit. He can hear layers upon layers of sounds in all in his head and then drive the artists crazy trying to get them to prefectly replicate all the layers of parts he hears. I think Pyromania for Def Leppard was just the right amount of production, similar to AC/DC's Back in Black. For me Hysteria is just too much. That was a case of having too much time to make the album.

    You were 100% correct, that there is a split between those who loved their earlier hard rock sound to their later commercial output as heard here. Coming out of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) in the early 1980's, it was seen by some that they sold out to America, in sound and style, their sound and looks was not really representative of the NWOBHM movement. I prefer their earlier music but can still enjoy their later more poppier songs.

    It's very difficult for me to believe when people say that they "don't know anything" about bands like Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Guns and Roses etc. It just doesn't make any sense unless you've lived under a rock your entire life! Those bands were SO HUGE that they transcend eras! Everyone and their mothers know who these bands are, regardless of if you lived during the 80s or not. Def Leppard is BY FAR one of the biggest rock bands in history! They were never "heavy metal". They were always hard rock/rock. This whole album was a bit more commercial, but it did not stray far from their previous sound. Music itself progressed a lot during the decade, and this is just a representation of that fact! Listen to any band that was popular during the early 80s and were still popular during the late 80s and compare their sound and songs, and you will see how music just changed before our eyes during that short span of time. Some may say it changed for the worst and not the better, and in a lot of cases, I would have to agree. But in other cases, some bands just got better! Def Leppard is probably a good example of that!

    I don't think Def Leppard ever could be considered metal. They were more raw with their first two albums but after that became a lot more poppier especially with the change of their drum sound for Hysteria due to Rick Allen's accident.

    Great band! I had the good fortune of getting to see them in concert live with one of my band mates from a band I was in at the time. The drummer had already lost his arm by then, but guitarist Steve Clark hadn't passed away yet, so he was still with them. That song was from their biggest album, but I still like the one before that one more which was titled "Pyromania". The songs "Foolin", "Too Late", "Die Hard The Hunter" and "Rock of Ages" were killers. The band that opened up for them was called "Tesla". Another great band with songs like "Modern Day Cowboy", "Ez Come, Ez Go" and they also had a song called "Too Late". It was a whole different sounding song then Def Leppard's song with the same name. The Pyromania album did reach number 2 on the Billboard charts, however I'm sure it would have reached number one if it wasn't for Micheal Jackson's album "Thriller". It was number one at the time and stayed at number one for 37 non-consecutive weeks.

    You guys should do more research on the bands and singers before you go in blind and think up your own scenarios..... there is so much to learn about each band, where they're from, who the singer, guitarists, drummers are etc....their story when they got started, the drummer started playing with his arm, later there was an accident and the band would not go on and play without him and he got a special drum set and learned how to play with one hand and his foot.....so much to research....and they are in a category of their own....nothing like Motley Crue.....two totally different bands, and they are not a Metal band, they are a Rock band it's different!

    Def Leppard is my favorite band from that time and it is because they waited on Rick Allen to heal from his accident, have a special drum kit made, and relearn how to play the drums. Not many bands would do that for another member, especially now days. I also love their music. I don't know how many times I've watched their Hysteria concert on YT. They are a class act, and I do love their music. My opinion, they are a class act for waiting for Rick to get it together. It paid off! Rick does a lot of work with the military helping them to overcome trauma. Rick and his wife are co-founders of the Raven Drum Foundation. He also formed the One Hand Drum Co. that makes drum kits for amputees.

      After Pyromania, the drummer Rick Allen lost his arm in a car accident. The Band thought it was over. Rick insisted, "give me a year to work out a system using my feet more", and he came back spawning support from the fans and a kick ass style of drumming, making this album bigger than the last. Def Leppard got bigger and bigger until bands like Whitesnake and Warrant ruined hair metal and grunge came a knocking wiping out almost all other genres in the early 90s.
