"Billy's Got a Gun" (one of the best closing tracks on an Album- its off of "Pyromania," which is a very solid Album! ) --- "Photograph" - "Rock, Rock (Til You Drop)" --- "Too Late For Love," --- "Rock of Ages," "Bringing on the Heartbreak," and "Foolin' " are some earlier songs to enjoy! The CD and tape of "Hysteria" (the Album) got worn out several times during my middle and high school years.

Rock, Rock (Til You Drop) is one of my favorites of theirs just because it straight up sounds like an AC/DC song. Apparently they wrote it while on tour with AC/DC and Joe Elliot sings it almost exactly like Brian Robinson would.

Def Leppard's first album "On through the Night" was a young raw band. The song Rock Brigade stood out. But then for the 2nd album, High 'n' Dry they worked with producer Mutt Lange (AC/DC) & you could hear the growth. The first 4 songs, "Let it Go', "Another Hit and Run", High 'n" Dry & "Bringin' on the Heartbreak" are all bangers. Then "Mirror Mirror" on side 2 is my favorite.
Their 3rd album (Pyromania) came out and they had a completely different look. Joe Elliot got rid of the perm, lightened his hair and they came out with their first concept videos. A great album with some rockers & other songs designed for more commercial success. It was the transitional album between a harder sound, and the much more commercial 4th album. They were on a path.
Hysteria their 4th album was designed to be a huge commercial successful album, and it was. They spent so much time in the studio working on it, and polishing it. (The Rick Allen accident happened during this time). They struck gold,. They released 7 singles over an 18 month period, all of them were at the top of the charts, and all over MTV. An AOR executives wet dream.

This is off "Hysteria" the album they were working on when Rick Allen lost his arm. The preceding album "Pyromania" was a huge record, and they wanted to top it. It took about 3 years to complete, waiting for Rick to come back, switching producers twice, and finishing writing.
They needed to sell a massive amount of albums just to break even. Needless to say, they did, and the rest is history.

For a harder sound, you need Pyromania and High and Dry albums. Also, Hysteria Album was the one they were in the process of makeing when Rick Allen had his accident, so the "softer" sound had a lot to do with the drum setup and Rick having to learn to play a different style. They are still touring (this year with Journey), and still rocking! They have been through a lot... Steven Clark's addictions and subsequent death and of course Rick Allen's accident. Great band and great group of guys! One of my favorites

Hysteria is an amazing track off of an amazing record that propelled them into superstardom. As a lifelong DEF LEPPARD fan i love this song as well as this entire record from top to bottom. Pour Some Sugar on me which you mentioned is likely the most famous track on the record, although rocket is an outstanding, fun journey through their musical youth. Gods of war is my personal favorite track on the record. Hysteria is also one of their two Diamond award selling records. The RIAA gives out this award for albums that sell more than 10 MILLION copies. THEY are 1 of only 22 artists in history to have multiple diamond selling albums. Their other diamond selling record is PYROMANIA, which is in my opinion their best record with HYSTERIA coming in a very close second.

nice reaction guys.. not surprising that samantha really likes def leopard. they were known to have a high female following for a 80s rock band. this is likely due to the heavy use of melodies in their music which is a common technique of "mutt lange" productions (i.e. bryan adams, shania twain, ac/dc, etc). it creates music that stays in your head long after the song is over and frequently favored by the female sex. it also fits well with joe elliot's voice and general tone of the band. i would also highly recommend "armageddon it" from the same album which sort of an in between song of the other two. enjoy! 😎

I remember the wait for this album...many delays in its release (understandable)...but it was a "monster" as they say

“Photograph” is probably their most famous hard rock single.

Steve Clarks contribution to Hysteria cant be overstated all of the great riffs on the album are because of him. Miss his creative playing on all the future albums.

The song Hysteria was made for the radio..it's a power ballad and was aimed at the female audience as back then the girls wanted to rock but they also wanted to have a good heartfelt song sung to them as well...they loved the relationship songs and power ballads were what drove in the numbers and money in the 80s hair era...

This song is from the Hysteria album, which is the same album Pour Some Sugar on Me was on.
This album had seven singles chart. The 2 you have listened to, Rocket, Armageddon It, Women, Animal and Love Bites.

Def Lep has never really been "hard" rock - they're just rock, but if you wanna hear the heavier side of this band, step into the way back machine & check out their EP "First Strike" & then the first two full-length albums, "On Through The Night" & "High & Dry". I believe you'll be able to appreciate the contrast. Happy listening & rock on, friends! Enjoy.

In all their first 5 album's all thay layered cool rythem guitar steny stuff is Steve Clark. Phil Colen was more or less the guitar solo for the most part. The bass player could really sing and played a tight pocket too.

Hands down Rock of Ages. Best, hardest, song they have done The album Pyromania was so big in 1983 that it changed the way Rock was done for the rest of the 80s.

Wow! Everybody is talking about "Early" Def Leppard and not a single mention of any song from their debut album on through the night. When they came on the scene. Harder edged not as poppy.
For early leppard before they evolved, check out. It don't Matter, Wasted, Hello America, Sorrow is a Woman, Rocks Off, Satellite.
Any of these will sound like a completely different band. Before the mega tours! I remember buying that album so I would know all their material before their first tour in America!

I mean they shot through the stratosphere with this pop rock but their best albums were On through the night and High N' Dry, IMO..
