An old video of a Hayward filter install. However the steps are the same. th-cam.com/video/FAEq-dSYUwE/w-d-xo.html
Right in the middle of doing this now. Looking at the video made it seemed so easy to vacuum. Though I would tell viewers what I’m experiencing in the hopes that they be better prepared. First off. The gap between the tank opening and the stand pipe is so tight that I couldn’t fit my larger shop vac extension inside without out exerting a lot of pressure on stand pipe so I had to use smaller diameter hose and extension. Then the tabs that hold the extensions together ended up right about top of stand pipe so I had to cut them off. Even then, the are area where the extensions are coupled together jam up on the collar and the top of the standpipe so I had to duck tape them together. then the hose would constantly clog up with packed sand, causing me to have to raise the hose up over my head and tap on the hose with something to constantly unclo. also I would strongly recommend a headlamp or some type of light to see what you’re doing inside because it matters where you’re jamming the end of your vacuum extensions to get the best out of it. I wasn’t able to move around my tank so I found a very large cooking paddle to move the sand to far side of tank making it easier to reach sand. I would recommend removing the standpipe and laterals as soon as it safe to do so to get them out the way, which is what seems to be the case in this video where he’s moving the hose around freely. all I can say is I bet the engineers at Pentair were laughing their butts off when I designed this tank.
Good video, but I was hoping to find you installing it with the factory hoses and fittings. Seems like I have too many fittings. Might be a multi pool package. I couldn't tell what went where with the after plumbing.
Thank you. There is no factory hoses or fittings with this model. there is with above ground units.
Our exact same filter had the exact same failure!
There was a bad batch. sorry about that.
Is it a heated pool? That’s a very common problem with heated pools an the sand dollar filter. It’s known by pentair I’m an warranty center for them. Unfortunately the builders still push them filters with heated pools an they never say anything
Another quality video!
Have you ever done a conversion of an SD80 sand filter to a bead filter to turn a pool into a pond?
@@rongambassi3681 Nope, ponds are not my thing.
Why do you recommend replacing the laterals? They seem to be hard to get out and probably hard to get in.
That's why. They get Brittle over time. Which means the act of pouring in new sand can break them.
Liked. Just curious what those filters are made from. Fiberglass ??
A polypropylene composite
Youre the best bro love ya
Why no coupler on the backwash pipe? I have the same setup and am about to do my first sand change and I don't understand why whoever did the plumbing left the backwash fixed without a coupler. I'm probably 2 years overdue for a sand change because didn't want to deal with that one pipe.
You are talking about a union and I did put one on. But it not necessary. Its just to easy to cut the pipe and put a coupling on. most people don't go over kill like I did here.
Thanks for the reply. I see it now, it was blended in with the valve and didn't notice it. I'll be changing my sand this weekend and this video was extremely helpful to ease my nerves. Thanks for posting.
@@joelconrad8595 your welcome
I'm unable to get the multiport to sit flush on the tank. I took off the o-ring and it sits flush, but if the o-ring is on it has about 1/2 gap. I tried lubing the o-ring and the inside rim of the tank , but that did not help. I also hit the top of the multiport with a rubber mallet and that did not help. Any ideas?
If it sits flush without the o ring there. Then you need a little bit more persuasion to get it in place. I tend to use my whole body weight.
I'm just replacing my multiport valve, and I'm having the same problem.
I thought the new multiport valve might be the wrong size, but I can't even get the original to sit on top of the sand filter close together enough to put the 2 clamp pieces on.
I didn't want to put too much downward pressure on the multiport valve because I'm afraid I might break the pvc pipe going down into the sand filter, as well as damaging the "fins" inside at the bottom of the tank.
I tried side to side twisting with no luck. Any chance of breaking the inside parts putting my body weight into it like you said you do?
Curious to see if you can please answer my questions:
1. My SD80 label says to use 350lbs of the #20 silica sand. Both my label and my manual do not mention pea gravel. So, even if it did, to get to 350lbs of sand capacity, would it be1 bag of sea gravel and 6 bags of silica sand?
2. If I need to replace the lateral assembly, can I do so with the folding laterals? Which part number would fit the SD80?
1 I like using pea gravel on filters bigger then 300lb so yeah, 1 bag of pea gravel.
2, I like the turn "click lock" that is standard. Not the flooding ones.
Where do you get the connectors that you replaced the original plumbing with and what are they called? They will definitely make things easier in the future.
Your local pool store should have them. they are call Hi-Temp Unions.
Your local hardware store will have them cheaper than a pool store.
on the SD 80, how do you get the laterals off of the piping assembly? They twist 45 degrees but wont come out, trying to replace them in the filter.
Thanks
Wash the sand off of them and then wiggle him with quite some force. It is best to replace the laterals when you're doing a sand change anyway.
where is the air release valve on this SD80? I have the same unit but cant find the valve?
Depending on which multi-port valve you have you may not have one. However if you do have one and there will be a knob the opposite side of the pipe where your sight glasses sitting.
Can you provide details (model #,etc) of the union?
amzn.to/41OT1gV
I tried this fitting that you linked to and it is too large to fit my Pentair multiport valve. I have tried multiple unions and cannot find the correct. Please help
How do you take the inner pipe out and the laterals?
they unscrew
My lid won't fit with the o ring on. Can't get the neck clamp on. :( halp!
I have to push down with all my body to get it one. lube helps.
So... I have had an issue with my pentar 145241 he didnt use the tool to keep the sand out of the laterals!!! FIX???
Run it on filter rinse mode will push the sand out the back wash line. Run on filter mode will push the sand out into the pool. Both will take time. Or you can take it all apart and redo it.
Did you have to do anything with the laterals before putting in the sand? I’m changing mine next week and pool guy told me they needed to be twisted and locked before adding sand and water.
Yes. If you are changing the sand you need to change the laterals as well. they are click lock. So yeah your pool guy was right. Make sure they are clean and locked in before adding sand.
@Christopher Farmer yes it come with them. No you don't have to do anything with them.
The SD80 calls for 350lbs of sand. The bags are 50lbs each, is there a reason why you used 4-5 bags?
I miss spoke in my voice over. Thanks for catching that.
@@AquanutAcademy SO DO YOU PUT IN PEA GRAVEL TOO?
@@danielgiblin361 Yes if the filter calls for it. Some don't, most all large filters do.
@@AquanutAcademy so you placed in 250 pounds of sand & 100 pounds of pea stone?
@@ChickensLady sounds right.
Why didn't you just replace the sand instead of the entire tank?
The tank was punctured
can the sd80 handle a 2hp pump/motor?
how does the sd80 compare to triton tr100 side mount or the Tagelus TA100d top mount?
Yes, But a you need to size everything correctly.
I’ve repaired many sand filter tanks that had minor leaking holes. As expensive as the tanks are, it’s worth the time
to epoxy over the holes with several layers of fiberglass cloth. I’ve never had one fail. Why in the hek don’t they have a better drain system to be able to remove drain to be able to remove sand with hose and dumping it in place?
Could you tell me how old the filter is that's being replaced? Thanks.
Unfortunately, I don't know. The date code had been removed.
@@AquanutAcademy Ok thanks anyway
Um hello slap a stretch of Flex Seal tape on it & you're good to go!!!
What the hell punctured the sand filter
Good question
Little piece of bubble gum coulda stopped that leak
Not at all. I understand how you might think that, not knowing anything about it. And while you can stop leaks in conventional ways, you run the risk of a catastrophic failure. That means an explosion. You may say I am overreacting a bit here. However I have many photos of filters exploding from people doing just such a dumb thing.
Them pentair sand dollar filters are terrible and known for that especially on heated pools or many with really hot summers takes tolls on them. I believe it has issues over time if the water passes through over 100°
My sand dollar just got a small pinhole leak in the top portion of it. We have a heated pool but the heater is after the filter, very unlikely the water going into the filter hits 100 degrees. Do you think it's because of the fact that our unit isn't shaded? We live in Ohio. Summers can hit mid 90s but typically dont get hotter than 90
