The Valve Body has a seal which can be replaced and also allow debris to pass directly back to the pool. Replace sand when the rough edges of the sand become smooth & don’t “grab” debris.

This video was so helpful! My dad used to always take care of our pool and he passed away and left me in charge! come to find out when I opened the pool this year the stand pipe for the laterals was broken, watched this video a couple times, got my confidence up and did the whole repair myself! Thanks for sharing:)

my local pool store gave me an estimate of 'around $600' to change out the sand. That didn't include the price of the sand or a replacement O-ring. Your video was simple to follow so I'll do it myself this weekend. Thank you sir for a job well done!

Thanks for this very informative video. My pool guy said he'll charge me $350 so, thanks to you, looks like I'll save about $250! The use of a shop vac to remove enough sand before dumping out the rest is a great tip for me because I thought I was going to have to hire a young, STRONG handyman to tip the cannister over to remove the 300 pounds of sand. (I'm 67, BTW, so my heavy-hefting days are far behind in the rearview mirror!)

Most competent people can assemble a union so it won't leak. Alignment and eliminating pipe strain will work wonders. They are, after all, equipped with an o-ring seal. The reason why you need to change the sand every 3-5 years is that the sharp edges of the sand grains will wear down over time and reduce or eliminate the filtering efficiency. This leads to cloudy water that will not seem to clear up no matter how long you run the pump and exorbitant chemical use.

Old pool company I used to work for overcharged more than the damn moving companies did! I would go back to their houses after hours and help them with much cheaper (and just as effective) options. From plugging up skimmer pinhole leaks to doing sand changes myself for about $80-100 instead of $600+ on the job. I don't like ripping folks off, especially when I know times are tough. I've come back to this video multiple times for a refresher since I still help some folks with their pools. Glad it's still up.

Terrific videos that will save me about $300. Two things I might do differently is to replace the O-ring under the valve and to use a union joint on the lines to/from the filter. They are made for this kind of occasional disconnect/reconnect.

You most definitely want to install unions on the multiport valve just make sure they are quality high temp unions. And you want to suck all the sand out with the vac DO NOT TILT THE FILTER OVER you could crack the base that the filter sits on then you’re going to have to replace that too. But this is a very easy process and it will save you money.
