    I have a 16 foot, 42 inches deep round, above ground pool and it turned green a week ago. Today, I added two gallons of Wamart's Chlorine from the pool area at $5.69, and 6 hours later, it turned baby blue! I removed bugs and leaves and other small debri and now my pool is now clean. Easy. Tomorrow, I will clean the filter and go swimming!

    When I pulled up my valve assembly, like you suggested in your video; the central pipe and and lateral assembly also came up with it a few inches.
    Getting it back down without damaging the laterals seems impossible without some kind of vibrating device (maybe an oscillating saw without a blade on the outside of the filter?) to liquefy the sandy water and reseat the assembly on the base, so unless there’s a trick you know of, I imagine I have to wet dry vac the sand out and resettle the lateral assembly.
    Before I went down that path I thought I’d confirm my observation?

    • @HallmarkPoolSupplies
      @HallmarkPoolSupplies  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If this has happened, you will have to remove the sand to put the lateral assembly back in. You can lightly sand the end of the standpipe and lube it, before connecting back to the valve. This will help when removing in the future.

    Hi Mark, thank you so much for your very precised and well explained videos. Just got my first pool and it helps a lot. I have a Jaccuzi sand filter. I watched your video where you show each position of the level. When I'm doing a backwash for 1 minute than a rinse for 30 seconds and put it back to filter switching off the pump in between each steps and turning the level clockwise, I'm always having some water continuing to leak down the waste drain when back to filter. What could be the cause? Thank you in advance!

    • @HallmarkPoolSupplies
      @HallmarkPoolSupplies  ปีที่แล้ว

      In the filter position, you should not have water leaking out of the waste line. You will have to check your multiport, inside the valve the key assembly may not be seated properly and needs to be repaired or replaced. You need to also check the gasket, if damaged or wore, then replace. Thanks for watching.

      I do not have a video on a side mount filter that pertains to the lateral assembly. The assembly is similar but is much harder to inspect. The lateral assembly can be removed but you have to remove the two side screws on the lower elbow assembly inside the tank. Thanks for watching.

    Love your tutorials. Used this video to change my on sand about a month ago because I was getting sand in pool. I inspected laterals and saw no cracking or breaks but I’m still getting sand. Any suggestions. I might mention that I’m having to manually vac to waste because vacuum is broke at the moment and just vacuumed yesterday and today theres noticeable sand. Thanks

    • @HallmarkPoolSupplies
      @HallmarkPoolSupplies  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If you have filter sand in the pool it will only be on the floor by the returns (jets). If what you are describing is all over the floor of the pool, this is more than likely mustard algae. Mustard algae looks like sand and you will have to treat, kill and vacuum to waste, if not it will keep coming back. If you have sand on the floor below the jets only, then you will have to open the filter and remove the sand and inspect the lateral assembly again. Thanks for watching.

  • @conperry1732
    @conperry1732 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Nice of you to gonto the trouble and time in prepping this video. I hate sand filters. Whenever I get the chance, I replace them with cartridge filters. I just don't see any reason to have a sand filter. If you are paying for electricity to circulate water, why run it through a filter that let's algae and other particles straight back into your pool? Surr cartridges are a little more work to clean, but waste WAY less water to clean, they need cleaning less often due to their much larger filter area, and don't have a MPV that gives trouble. I just don't see why sand filters are so popular. Worst of all, they are hard work to commission and decommission.

    • @HallmarkPoolSupplies
      @HallmarkPoolSupplies  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Sand systems are more expensive to buy, but much cheaper to operate. Sand systems are also more forgiving to operate than cartridge filters because they do not filter as fine as cartridge filters. Sand on average is changed every 4 to 5 years and is also self cleaning. It costs a lot less to change the sand than to replace the filter in a cartridge system. All filter systems work well, (sand, cartridge or DE) and it is a matter of preference. The size of the pool and where you live also makes a difference in which system will work best for you. Thanks for watching.

    Thanks for the excellent video. I'm in the middle of replacing my filter sand and noticed two hairline cracks at the top edge of the standpipe running about an inch down from the top. Never had any problems to this point, so I'm wondering if I should let alone. Is the standpipe replaceable, or do I need to purchase the entire assembly? Would a little PVC glue along the cracks (on the inside of the pipe) offer some stability?

    • @HallmarkPoolSupplies
      @HallmarkPoolSupplies  หลายเดือนก่อน

      You should be fine if the hair line crack is at the end of the Stand pipe by only one inch. This part of the stand pipe is inserted into the underside of the valve and is not exposed. If the crack extends down from the valve and is exposed then you will need to replace the assembly. In time this will get worse and you will have to replace the assembly. Thanks for watching.

    • @HallmarkPoolSupplies

      If to much sand was put into the filter, then this could be the problem. The sand can keep coming out until it self levels. If you put the correct amount of sand in the filter then you should be okay. If down the road this keeps happening then you will have to open the filter and inspect it again.

      Most all filter sand is # 20 silica, there may be other grades but if it is labeled pool filter sand you should be fine. If you have inspected the laterals and the assembly and everything is good then you may be dealing with mustard algae. If this is all over the pool, it’s more than likely dead algae which looks like sand. If it is sand it will accumulate at the base of the returns only. Thanks for watching.

    Good evening Mark,
    I recently swapped out the sand in my sand filter. My sand filter takes six bags; however, I put in seven bags. I'm unsure if this is the reason, but I have since found sand in the pool's slimmer basket.
    Also, my Pool Pump keeps overflowing; the lid loosens and causes water to spill out.
    Please reply when you can regarding what could be causing this issue. Thank you, and stay safe!

    • @HallmarkPoolSupplies
      @HallmarkPoolSupplies  หลายเดือนก่อน

      You need to put the right amount of sand in the filter, overfilling is not good. Try removing the extra sand then backwash and rinse the filter. Make sure the pump lid and o-ring are in good condition. Lubricating the o-ring helps, makes for a better seal and easier lid removal. You want to tighten the lid hand tight so you have an air tight seal. Thanks for watching.

I sprayed some lubricant on it but it's not budging. I have a Pentair SD40. You should be able to remove the standpipe from the multiport valve. Wiggle the pipe or use a pair of channel locks but be careful. Once you have removed the standpipe you can lightly sand and lube the end of the standpipe. You can also lube the underside of the valve where the standpipe goes in. This will allow the standpipe to go back in easily, and it will also help in the removal of the standpipe down the road. Thanks for watching.

    Is it normal to have some sand in the bottom of a pool after sand change? I had none last year, and changed the sand at the beginning of the season this year (about 2 weeks ago), and there's a little building up in spots at the bottom. I have no sightglass, backwash to a storm drain, and my laterals are fixed, not hinged- so I couldn't get the assembly out for a thorough inspection. Everything seemed ok, as far as I could tell. Howdy Mark, I sure do need your help. I purchased a pool package from a seller on EBay but it didn't come with a Hayward filtration system, and I'm having a real big problem with the Lateral system. It's made very cheap and there are open sections where the laterals attach to the hub, and the filter sand is being sucked through and pumped into the pool. I want to get rid of the entire lateral system that came with the pool filter and up-grade it. I'm wondering if it's possible to replace the lateral system that I have with a better system? my system is 26" tall, and laterals are 13" across. Is it possible that one of the lateral systems from Harward will fit my tank? The tank itself is 16" round. I will try to ad to add the description on my filtration system to this post. How much sand is too much? I always see sand on my step under the return jet in the pool. I vacuum in the morning and by afternoon, I see gritty material on the step. If that coming from the return jet or could it be small pieces of concrete coming off the bottom of the feet as people enter?

    • @HallmarkPoolSupplies
      @HallmarkPoolSupplies  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It’s possible that this could be dead algae. Dead algae looks a lot like sand, it’s so fine when you vacuum the pool in the filter position it will go through the filter and back into the pool. If you vacuum this sediment to waste it should resolve your problem. When vacuuming to waste you will have to add water to the pool. If this was sand or dirt it would not come back unless you have a broken lateral in your filter. If this happens after vacuuming this to waste or it gets worse then you may have to check your filter. Thanks for watching.

    • @HallmarkPoolSupplies

      On most side mount filters, the laterals are attached to the bottom elbow assembly which is attached to the bulk head. In order to remove the assembly you have to take it apart. If you are just removing or replacing the laterals you can unscrew them, if the elbow is damaged then you have to unscrew both top and bottom unions on the outside of the filter and remove the bottom bulk head to replace the elbow assembly.

      You need to chemical treat for mustard algae, take a water sample to your local pool store and have it tested. After treatment, you definitely want to vacuum on waste to remove. If you vacuum in filter it will come back into the pool. When vacuuming in waste you will have to add water to the pool. Once you are done you may want to check or change the sand in the filter.

    • @HallmarkPoolSupplies
      @HallmarkPoolSupplies  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Fine sediment should be vacuumed to waste. Dead algae or mustard algae is so fine it will go through the filter back into the pool. Do not use an automatic cleaner because it will stir up the sediment and it will also run through the cleaner back into the pool. Once all this fine sediment is out of the pool you will be fine. I believe that your filter is good, if one of the laterals is broke then you would have a lot of sand at the bottom of each return jet in the pool. If this sediment is all over the floor of the pool it is dead algae and it looks like sand. Sand will only accumulate at the floor under the return jets of the pool, not the whole entire pool.
