  • There was a point in my life where my video game library was made up of physical media; that I could never imagine digital games outselling physical copies. But one small game changed that for me entirely. A little known game from Insomniac, called Spider-Man. Find out the full story as to why I adopted a minimalist lifestyle and switched to 100% digital.

      Only thing I buy physically is switch games so I can share with my gf since they don't offer digital game share like on ps and xbox if it wasn't for that I'd be fully digital they always have sales on games on the digital stores for 30 bucks or less for all content for a game why spend the same amount for a physical game then have to also buy the digital contents because it seems to me physical games don't drop in price hardly atleast not on the switch I haven't bothered looking at physical games for my xbox or playstation in years and the last time I did get a game physical for it was purely because mw19 was 50 instead of 60 at Walmart and I figured well if I don't like it I can take it back and it cost me less money which Is the only time I've bought a game from Walmart since I was a kid

    If you're a minimalist, sure, but I personally LOVE being in my room and seeing a shelves full of games that I love (including many collector's editions), it just makes me happy, it's not just about the value of owning the game physically.

    I go for both. Really it comes down to convenience for me. Although, I prefer physical media, I’m not against digital media and at times prefer it.

    All of my games are digital. I come from the times of Atari, NES, SNES, and Sega Genesis. I have all these games on emulators with the roms that go with it. I have the whole rom libraries of Atari, NES, SNES, and Sega Genesis. I have these games in digital formats because they are not available anywhere I know to buy physically. A while back, they bought back NES and SNES consoles but as mini consoles. I was going to buy both of them, but I didn't trust them. So I stuck with what I already had. I'm very happy with what I have.
    I also have other gaming emulators. Nintendo 64, Sega Model 2, Nintendo GameCube, PlayStation 2, and Xbox 360. My entire video game is digital and I'm happy with it. I'm very happy with what I have.

    I just like owning my games physical it’s really cool to have a collection of them on the shelf but like you said if your a minimalist that might not be for you while I try to be a minimalist in a lot of parts of my life I just don’t find games take up to much space, the only things I typically buy digital are dlc or expansions for my physical games.

    I have both physical and digital games on my Switch, I just decide on a case by case basis when I'm buying games. Usually I try to buy games during sales so if it's a retailer doing a physical game sale I will buy it that way, or if there's an eShop digital game sale for a game I want I'll buy it that way.

    In Australia physical is still $30-$40 cheaper. I'm fine switching to digital but they are not making it easy.

    I have been collecting movies for years, dating back to VHS. So, I'm very much pro physical media. However, for games, I will sometimes go for the convenience of digital. It really depends on availability and price. I still go for the disc if it's easily accessible or cheaper. Although the experience is the same, a large game does download much faster from the disc. At least in my experience. BTW, just came across your channel. Enjoying it a lot so far. Take care.

    I want physical versions. Its offer me a more secure way to keep my libray safe from hacking and theft. Im in the usa and im watching companies strip lifelong licensing from digital media through internet by ip tracking. It harder to stop physical version from continuing to work. But im inbetween ideas cause digital makes in home family gaming much easier then buying 4 versions of one game for my in home family to play

    • @imniallg
      @imniallg  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Just curious, could you provide some examples. Stopping physical games from working can be done with DRM and mandatory updates. It would be an interesting thing to test out with digital games though. And home family gaming is much easier digitally.

      @@imniallg my most recent game i had this happen to me was call of duty modern warfare for xbox one. I put the disc in and it states i dont own it after all of the updates. It only lets me play warzone. Auto desk just removed lifetime license of all past versions that have a key a in a booklet or on physical box. Some lower end video editor started this one time key only process where getting a new pc means puchasing a new key for that i.p. ( movavi editor).
      A dj software called Serato used to have lifetime for digital purchase but they removed those licences also forcing subscriptions.

      @@imniallg alot of digital purchases of music, movies and games when there was xbox 360 and ps3 , and the indie market took off, I still cant re download those onto any modern consoles so I have lost those. Digital really is a wierd one when talking long term use, while throwback consoles and emulators really help fill the gap so long as they can keep doing it.

    • @imniallg

      My concern is that the issue you experience with MW on Xbox One is an isolated issue that can be resolved and not a widespread issue. The Autodesk problem is very bait-and-switch money grabby and hopefully users will push back and force them to change. But its not surprising that they've done that with companies live abode doing the same. Difference there is, that the main service is still available. The manner in which you get it is different. I guess the same applies with dj.

    • @imniallg
      @imniallg  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That is a backwards compatibility issue with previous generations that also applies to disc. They never removed the playability of those games if you still have a PS3 and/or 360. That issue was more about bad choices and not future proofing. Much harder on the PlayStaton side than xbox which is why we've seen some older titles come to xbox. You'll probably never see them all because you'd have to renew licences and find lost ones.

    I combine both. Mainly because I play mostly on PC, but my favorite games I usually buy second time for console physically. The widespread lie online today is that PS4,PS5,XONE games are not on the disc, they still are. I like to have the option to turn on the unpatched AC Unity and be able to play it on PS4, even something like Cyberpunk 2077 is still finishable on PS5 without updates using PS4 disc. When I see the "Internet connection Required" on the box, I just don't bother buying the game physically, even if I like it very much.
    Some games are getting content removed or censored with patches. GTA 4 has some radio stations completely empty after updates, disc version has them all (On PC there was disc edition too, but GFW Live forces us to crack it, still after cracking it, the content is untouched).
    AC Odyssey added grind with patches. Unpatched game works fine from disc on PS4 and is pleasant to play without retroactively added grind that has to encourage players to buy microtransactions.
    Fairy Tale (an anime game) had camera angles changed in patches because sony didn't like what these shots were exposing (small thing, but when it's anime and for big portion of people interested this change is going to be a huge deal).
    Same things happens to movies, but so far only on streaming services like Netflix (Back to the future, 13 reasons why) and TV stations (the one that censored spider-man).
    I also will point out that using the argument of games being taken from you after buying digital is unlikely at this time is bad. Only recently we had 3 big situations happen:
    - 3DS shop closed, therefore your digital purchases are not available anymore to download,
    - Sony trying to close PS3 and PSVita shops completely, they would still allow you to download games u got, but only if u downloaded them before closure - till this day I still didn't download few games because of my backlog but I would like to instal them and play them in the future, these games would be gone even if I paid for them, if not the outrage from costumers.
    - Ubisoft sending emails that they will close your account - somehow dictated by EU laws, but other companies don't do it, only Ubisoft and Blizzard. Now they're try to downplay it, saying no games will be removed, but the email was pretty clear.

    • @imniallg
      @imniallg  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A lot of good points. If I remember, the 3DS shop closer was for new purchases only. But more importantly, the system was being used less and less, very much like the PS3 and PSVita. It doesn't make it any less tragic.
      There are many modern games that are on 2 discs, such as RDR2, TLOU Part 2 that need to be installed. Some, like Jedi Survivor & Call of Duty download much of that separately from the your relative networks. All games on previous and current (PS4 - Series S) don't run the game off the disc like PS3 and 360. So I'm sure what that widespread lie is related to.
      The Ubisoft story is related to account inactivity and GDPR, specifically related to data retention and is something that is simple to avoid. If you want to read about it, its Article 5.1.e.

    • @DanteSwordX
      @DanteSwordX 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@imniallg I read now, yes, 3ds does allow downloading past purchases. So here was mistake on my part.
      By game running off the disc I mean, that we can install the game without updates (so bad choice of words on my part) and it will be fully playable from start to finish. Some PS3 games also needed to be installed (at least partially) before playing (like GTA 4 for an example).
      A lot of people insist that games like Assassin's Creed or GTA 5, RDR2 aren't playable without downloading day one patches - which that I called widespread lie, because these games run perfectly without any downloads.
      Especially Sony titles, they put a lot of effort to make sure the full instalation is able from disc only and won't require any download - like mentioned TLOU Part 2.
      As for Ubisoft story, they kinda explained that they will not be abiding by that law, but it is weird they felt need to in the first place. There are other services EU based (like GOG which belongs to CDPR which are based in Poland) I remember having an old account that I even forgot existed - and after somewhere around 5-6 years of it not being logged into it still was accessible today.

    I love physical and specifically buy only games that have the game fully on the disc , we all know digital is more convenient but it also is then no longer something we are guaranteed to always have access to. The moment console gaming goes the way of fully digital is the day I switch to a steam deck of some sort in the future.

    Let me try and sell it to you this way. I originally bought and own Star Wars Battlefront 2 on disc. Then, I was forced to purchase the digital download since the Xbox I bought had no disc drive. Well, everytime I played Yavin 4, I suffered a MAJOR glitch. The land would disappear and I would just fall into infinity. Microsoft refused to help me with the issue. Their solution, buy another a download. $79 for the disc, $59 for the download. I had already spent $138. Now, they wanted me to spend $59 more, making it $197. Almost $200 for one game. I decided it's time for me to give up Xbox. Talk about price gouging. At least, with the disc, I never suffered any glitches. The digital, many games have glitches.

    Playstation store is the most expensive gaming store in the world. That's reason alone not to ever buy digital. I ONLY buy physical. I'm never going all digital. And what happens when you die? I would like to pass my games on. Or what if, let's say, Xbox goes under, then what with all the digital games? No, digital only games is a really bad idea.
    You say unlikely to loose license, this happens often. Games are being removed because of that all the time.

    This videonis a major fail. You spent the whole time trying to convince people how digital is better. It's not!!!! Not buy a long shot. U can have the fastest internet ever, but its not going to be playing from a disc faster are you crazy? Also licenses do end and games get delisted pretty often. Even of theybwerent going to expire for now, the fact still remains that the licenses eventually expires and u don't really own the game. Only the younger generation elation believes digital and DRM are great lol. Digital downloads aren't faster than physical. Ps3 was slow. Even downloading from the disc on 360 to the console was faster lol. Playing from the disc is faster. You dont have to work about patches and updates that ruins your game and take out all thr fun glitches, and licensed music. I have nothing against digital. Both medium has their positive and negatives. I like to own my games and I like the cool stuff that comes with them.

    • @imniallg

      I’m not trying to convince anyone. I was explaining why I switched and why it more suits my lifestyle. I never said it would play from a disc faster? I stated that for me back on PS3 it was quicker to install from the disc than download from the store. And that Spider-Man on PS4 was the last physical game I purchased as my internet had surpassed the install speed. Licensee do end and games can get delisted from store fronts, but they will never be removed from your library after you have purchased the game. The game is yours. Obviously download speeds vary and it installing from a disc is faster for you, but for me, it isn’t. Now with the PS5, installs are on par with my internet. With the introduction PS4 and Xbox One, games are no longer played from the disc.
