The Highs And Lows Of One Year All Digital

  • Marching into this new generation, Kurt made a conscious choice to go all-digital with the Xbox Series S and the Playstation 5. And the result has been, well, rather unexpected.
Going all-digital can be a troubling prospect for some gamers. No selling/trading in games? No borrowing or lending them? What if your favorite series just disappears off the digital marketplace? They're all valid points. But still, Kurt Indovina marched bravely, or maybe naively, into an all-digital future with the Xbox Series S and PlayStation 5 Digital Edition.
Join Kurt on the highs and lows of his digital future, including his unexpected appreciation for past games.
The digital future can feel like a brittle one. Games like Jump Force will cease to exist on digital storefronts come February 2022; Metal Gear Solid 2 & 3 have pulled due to licensing issues over archival footage; and Rockstar Games delisted GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas weeks before the release of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy -- The Definitive Edition. On the flipside, however, there's a lot for what digital features offer, like Xbox's Quick Resume, and the digital service Game Pass.

My 2 cents, here in Brazil post-2015 is kinda expensive/difficult to buy physical games, PS4/PS5 not so much but xbox/Nintendo games are a pain to get, going digital was the easiest and, sometimes, cheapest way to buy games here.
Today, as a Series S owner who use it everyday, I prefer to buy a 8GB external HDD and use it as a '8000 games-in-one cartridge', than buy a physical game and having Its case sitting on my shelf collecting dust.
To give an example, Metroid Dread was released here on the Switch digital store for R$ 300, something like 54 dollars. The physical edition was not officialy released here, so if I want to buy it I need use stores which imports them. And they are selling it for R$ 450, something like 80 dollars.

Yeah, I'm brazillian also and in Brazil I go full digital just because the pricing is impossible. However, I lived in France for 2 years recently and there I got almost full physical (with the exception of ACNH because it launched during the lockdown), physical copies were overall cheaper there (thank you, Amazon). At the end of the day, for the Switch I 100% prefeer physical, I can resell it if I need to and I love to have the cartridges (and the games don't ocupy space in the memory), but for my Series X, unless there is emotional attachment to the series, I prefer digital, with gamepass almost everything I play is digital so every time I have to get up to change games is kinda of a chore.

This generation, it's worth spending that little extra for the physical editions. Even if you plan on buying majority digital games. Those occasional physical-only games, or games that are cheaper physical because a shop is trying to clear stock or you're buying used, ect. They justify the extra price, especially on the PS5 where the price difference between the digital and disc systems is tiny.

This is an excellent video. You (Kurt) addressed so many different facets of going all digital... or not to in some cases... That inevitably the all digital future is here whether we like it or not. The next step is cloud gaming... Again, whether gamers like it or not. I am part of Gen X, and we literally grew up along side the video game industry as it bloomed into the multibillion dollar industry of today. A big part of me is concerned with game preservation (physical or digital presentation) because the industry is only less than 40something years old at this point even if it seems longer. Digital is convenient, but we need people who are focused on game preservation to make sure we are preserving our digital past as we move to an all-digital future.

What you said in the end is why I kept my SEGA genesis, n64, ps2 with ps1 backcompat and Wii with component cables for gamecube.
I’m pretty digital for the future, I only have one switch game physical and the rest I have on a big sd card. I will probably get the Xbox series s or ps5 digital. I recognize the problems with digital but when many games are essentially shipping physically as 100 mb launchers or having only half the game on the disc/cartridge, it’s just whatever to me at that point and like just clicking a new game from a menu vs getting up and popping it out to not even be read off the disc or cartridge anyway. Plus I’m someone who when a console isn’t supported anymore, and it isn’t too much trouble, I find a way to mod or jailbreak it for the main reason of being able to preserve and back up games that may be hard to find or save data that I have put way too much time into.
But for the ps2/gc generation and backwards, idk, there’s just something about the game cases, the controllers, having a memory card, the variety, finding a cheap steal or a hidden gem or a game that’s so bad it’s actually good.
Idk a lot of older games took risks, and I appreciate that.
To this day, there really isn’t a game that feels like the jak and daxter trilogy, or the first sly cooper, prince of Persia sands of time, splashdown rides gone wild, the first warioware, the first few ddrs on ps2, the gamecube Mario parties (the best ones I don’t care what you think n64 purists, I started there too), the laughably yet endearing licensed games of the early 00s. Obviously I have a soft spot for the ps2/gc library but that was such a cool time in gaming that’s just hard to describe.
The 3ds (2ds) is kind of my new console to fall in love with and I think part of the reason is the games on there really have a feel that is similar to that generation, there’s just a warm fuzzy feeling I get when I see those slightly blurry pixels.

I somehow agree with you. When I love some music from a movie or Spotify I don't hesitate to get its physical copy as a form of appreciation, and I like that you basically said " that's just the way I like it" I've got a friend who's chosen to go all digital but everytime he tells me about his decisions I feel Like he feels superior and tries to convince me that's that's THE way to go, and I as a person who just enjoys stacks of games by my tv I just say ok, I prefer my stuff

Digital is more expensive and you don't have the options you do with physical like selling the game or lending the game to friends. When you hear the media saying digital has become more popular that's just a narrative they use so they can make more money and make you feel like you are behind in the world.

I'm usually a physical collector, however due to poor spending habits (this is on me) I used to end up getting games just to store on the shelf and would never get around to playing them. Or I'd see something on sale digitally for very cheap, but then want them physically on the shelf, so i'd buy the same games multiple times. For me, going all digital is a way to discourage me from buying games just to fill a shelf, and they will usually be always available to me to download, as I've traded in some games before, only to buy them back when I'm better off. I respect people who have self control and can collect comfortably, but my impulsiveness ends up being the thing that cripples me. I have made an exception for the Switch, which is bizarre as that would probably be best as an all digital due to portability, however I enjoy the fluid case design as nearly all switch game cases follow the same formula. I'm just weird, but if anyone else is like this please let me know so I don't feel alone :')

  • @Ha1frican

I just finally switched form being an avid Steelbook collector to going all digital. It was the need to have the best quality for my movies and being faced with replacing most of my collection with new 4K disks or just using my digital copies like I already had been. Once it became clear it would cost way too much to upgrade what would probably need to be upgraded later. I was REALLY resistant to switching away from my physical collection that I’d been building for almost 13 years.
Now I feel like I’m living in the future. Less clutter, I manage all my games from my phone and download my games from anywhere so they are ready when I get home. There are crazy deals on PSN and I just add whatever I want to my wishlist and get alerts when they are cheap so I pay way less per game. I’m sure it has its downsides but so far it’s been great and this coming from someone who was essentially physical only up until about a month ago.

I prefer to have choice. Sure I get some people prefer digital. For me it is all about choice.
I still play on my PS4, I do not own PS5 (availability issues or if available the price) but I got XSX, 10 months ago at MSRP.
Yes Xbox Game Pass (including recent updates to xCloud) is my main way o playing games, but I bought Judgment and Lost Judgment physical editions.
Game Pass allows me to try a lot of games I might have otherwise missed, and number of them were good or very good experiences.
So at it right now we all have a choice. And this is great.
The only sad thing is that the consoles availability is poor (to put it mildly).
For me personally the old base PS4 is still a good piece of hardware - sure it is significantly louder than XSX, sure the loading times sometimes feels like a waste of time, but I can still play games on it and enjoy them. I get that for some people after trying new hardware is it really hard to go back to the previous one, but this is not the case for me.
The only thing that counts is to enjoy gaming. It does not matter what hardware we play, it's all about the fun we have.
    Have a nice time gaming!

When Xbox said the XB1 was going to have digital licenses, at first I was mad, but then I realized that it was really more or less the same as PC games and I've had those digitally for like 17 years now with no issues. I still bought discs, but with this latest generation where it's clear that the discs are little more than installation media and license keys, I figured it was finally time to go all digital. I still got the models with disc drives for backward compatibility, but all new games have been bought digitally. The only real downside has been price; physical games tend to get better sales, which is a little dumb. I think the biggest issue moving forward isn't having digital games or even that some games might no longer be available for sale, it's that there isn't a consistent store front for them. With Steam, games I bought 17 years ago are still there; with PlayStation or Nintendo, each console generation has its own store, so they shut down the previous ones after a while, so you not only lose the ability to purchase those games, you can't even go download them again. But that does seem to be changing as the PS4 and PS5 stores seem to be the same and the Xbox marketplace hasn't really changed since the 360 era (I mean look at the product pages for 360 games online, they literally haven't changed), so maybe they are learning.

    • @PresidentPixel
      @PresidentPixel 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Really interesting perspective and probably the polar opposite to mine. I went digital with all media I consume back in 2014 and have loved it due to the lack of having to store physical media - especially back when I was a student moving all my stuff to a different place each year. While I do miss aspects like borrowing games among friends and flicking through a good game manual, I think we need to go digital some day to reduce e-waste.
I play on PC so while I get the whole thing of wanting to revisit games, I don't have to get an older machine to revisit the sorts of older games I like to replay. I can play them on my current system and in all likelihood, see a better version of what I played back in the day.

I have been exclusively digital for 10 years now. I love being able to just go into a game without having to switch a disc and putting them back in their boxes. I never buy full priced games and the digital sales are great.

I'm the other way around. I love switching discs and having to put them back in their own boxes. I usually collected both physical and digital over the years and have been mainly physical the last two years. But there are some games like attack on titan final battle that make me want to buy the digital version. I'd rather spend $30 on a digital copy over $150-$200 on a physical.

If your cat demands your attention, you shall do so as commanded, Kurt.
    Bow to our feline overlords!!
But, seriously! Cats are the best!
On a more serious note, the one thing that worries me about all digital gaming is if one day I will no longer be able to red-ownload the stuff I purchased. That's my only real fear.

I totally agree with your view on digital only, I myself own a PS5 & Series S and most of my PS5 games are all digital buys as well as for the series S of course since it's digital only Lol. But I too have had issues with build up of games that simply takes up room when trying to live more minimalistic. But on the other hand collecting other older consoles to be able to play the games in there original format is simply nostalgic 😊👌🏽💯🎮 I say that as a PS3, Gamecube owner as well 😀

SImple answer is..Xbox is tailor made for streaming games, thus getting a Series S for new xbox gamers is a no brainer..but PS just isnt, so having discs is the way to go on PS5.

Just saw a video about this 2 days ago, a company took purchase data from 25 countries and 49 different game publishers and found that physical media purchases are outselling digital 51% to 49% so it's split down the middle. I bought a disc edition ps5 because I like the freedom of trading games with friends, selling/ buying used games at brick and mortar stores and having a collection i can ACTUALLY see and touch. I would only buy digital content out of convenience, like not having to drive to the local gamestop in 30° below weather. I have made the switch to an all digital music collection however. Keep in mind that I'm 45, so there's that.☺

True that. I even started buying wii games especially games that make full use of the wiimote control like light guns games, fps, motion & party games. Problems with physical are scalper. That's why I try to rebuild a digital library too but only on pc.

Have you ever thought about how many games come out every year? How many of those games have physical copies? How many of those games have sold 100000 copies? 1 million copies. And the first 2 things these games have you do is install to the internal drive and download a 30gb patch to make the game playable.
A game that comes on a disc in a plastic box is as close to a single use plastic as it can get. It's basically the equivalent of a straw. More so than music or movies.
How many games come feature complete on a disc? No Online, Multiplayer, DLC, Day One Patch or Year 3 Patch? If you popped that PS5 game disc into a PS5 20 years from now. Would that game be 100% playable without trying to download content from a server that doesn't exist anymore? So what is the point of this physical media other than to pacify peoples need to physically own things.

    • @batmangovno

That's not a "physical media" issue, that's entirely a "publishers purposely crippling physical media for their convenience" issue.
