Psssssst!! The truck should be idling whilst draining any excess. If you drain the excess fluid while the engine is off, you’ll be about a quart low. I noticed while watching the vid, you drained the excess fluid with the engine “off”.

@@Syntheticoilprotection yes I agree with Eben. The Car Care Nut on TH-cam who’s a Toyota Certified Mechanic said if you do your ATF changes on time and your transmission is fine, no need to change the transmission filter.
It depends on the component each vehicle has a different component that's the transmission some vehicles have two three four different transmissions on the same model it depends on the time of year it was built so I personally do not remember every vehicle some do have reusable gaskets that are really solid you can use them two three times easily some are very thin in a rip apart when you take it off so it just depends on your exact transmission that's on your exact year make and model. What's absent from your process is the running of the engine to the temperature the trans fluid should be before you drain it from the overflow, since the fluid expands as temperature rises.

The info I found for checkinf the level had a lower temp .maybe 90 something to lower 100 .it said to jump two pins on the obd port and to go from n to d back and fourth until the light flashes and when ir comes on then you are at the right temp...its been a lityle bit since I did mine but you can find it in the service manual
Yeah I used to think that was really technical when you're doing these services but it's not there's actually quite a bit of extra room in there for expansion and contraction of the ATF fluid so really as long as the fluids warm to hot you're just fine The only thing is you don't want to do it and leave the car cold and top it off cold because you could have too much fluid. That would be the only real danger because the fluid expands when it gets hot.
Sweet! Thank you Robert 💯 I'll let you know when I see your order show up in my account 😃 Thanks again for being a part of my TH-cam community ☕💯😃 If you ever have any questions I'll be available. Happy Friday 😊🎬💯
First off I just want to say that I genuinely love Amsoil products. I have an account with them and run it in everything, accept for Aisin transmissions... I used it in my Ram 3500 as69rc, did a full flush got all the mopar fluid out and checked the fluid level multiple time until it was perfect. It drove great, shifted great, but the temps went WAY up. Before the flush it never went above 165 unless I was pushing it hard towing 25k plus at low speeds with lots of reversing. After the flush it would regularly hit 190+ during normal driving conditions. I flushed back in mopar and everything went back to normal. I also have a 23 Taco with an Aisin and will not be using Amsoil in it. Though I will be in everything else besides the transmission..
My only question is, What is the reason for designing the transmission to have the fluid PUMPED upward in order to fill it rather than entirely by gravity from up above like with the an oil fill??? Why???? I don't understand this reasoning.
Tell me about it I don't get it either and there's a lot of vehicles you'll see on the channel That just don't make any sense but when you take care of them they can run better than brand new by choosing the right fluids🥇 New Promo: FREESHIP Eben Rockmaker 702-472-3614 New Video - th-cam.com/video/KFudRR3jHyU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=FaU7Vzc3kJ1o-rlG Business card: linktr.ee/EbenRockmaker
Drain and fill a couple of times is all I do....Never even take the pan off. On my Tundra you have to check trans level between 99-111F and let drain to a trickle while truck is running.

Usually that's good however sometimes you can burn off a little bit of oil because over time the oil actually evaporates and you can actually lose a little bit of volume also depending on the temperature when you take out the fluid it'll also expand and contracts so the best thing is just to fill it until it starts to overflow make sure the fluid is warm and or at operating temperature and you'll always be good the only thing you don't want to do is overfill it by filling it when it's cold because when the fluid gets hot it actually expands quite a bit about 10% in volume and you don't want to overfill the transmission by a quart and a half it could overflow and/or cause damage so you just want to make sure it's warmer hot once you top it off
Curious why you never followed the toyota recommendation and jumped the ODBII pins to put it into transmission temp mode? Using a digital thermometer on the outside of the pan is a known unreliable method and its irresponsible to tell people this is ok...
I have heard similar advice from dealership mechanics but they added that this is because it is believed that the transmission temp mode is more reliable than the level of error introduced with a man making the measurement with a tool.
I have heard similar advice from dealership mechanics but they added that this is because it is believed that the transmission temp mode is more reliable than the level of error introduced with a man making the measurement with a tool.
Yeah there’s a very temp specific process to check the fill level of these trans from Toyota. By either jumping the OBD and putting it in check mode or using a live data scanner. Both happen while the truck is running so kinda wild all and all.
Yeah it's not that complicated all you want to do is make sure the fluid is warm because the fluid volume changes by temperature for instance if you filled it well it was extremely cold outside you could have way too much fluid in it but as long as you check the fluid level well it's warm to medium warm you're fine.

Question how many times can to reuse filter and was that I pounds torque or was it inch pound. Love Amsoil. Oh yeah one other thing always and I mean always pop the fill plug first.
That's a good question Douglas honestly I don't know for certain I would definitely double check the specs on the transmission most of those bolts are all aluminum and they're very light super light like 8 lb of torque or something small like that
Hey Eben, i just changed the engine oil in my 99 ford f250 7.3 diesel to 15w40 sig series from rotella at approx 100000 miles, first thing i noticed when i fired it up after adding amsoil is the idle was slighly at a lower rpm, not huge but curious why it lowered the idle? I will say this, before the change my mpg was around 15, after the switch to amsoil plus adding seafoam to the fuel bowl and to the fuel tank with fuel filter change and i changed the zf6 trans fluid to half redline df4 and redline mtf, my next tank averaged 19 mpg. That blew my mind as i have never seen that higher than 17 even with mostly interstate driving. I also changed the cam position sensor to the updated Motorcraft model which helped plus removed cat which is just a plug for a diesel exhaust.
That's awesome yeah you'll see diesel Steve on the one video with the 7.3 L diesel he went from 350 mi on a full tank to 410 mi per full tank. We did the Amsoil oil change engine flush We also use the seating bluest plus diesel clean That's the green bottle Amsoil makes it and that'll make a huge difference in your fuel mileage as well. I also recommend trying the low toxicity biodegradable coolant that Amsoil makes and also the AMS oil signature series ATF fluid also will make a big difference in how fast your transmission shifts.
Do you have the part numbers for the pan gasket, filter and crush washers for the fill, drain and check level nuts? Is there a OBD reader that can be used to check the temperature, or can I check the pan with a temperature gun?
You're fine with a temperature gun The biggest most important thing is to make sure you let the ATF fluid get hot. Usually if you let a car sit in idle for about 5 minutes it's fine The biggest thing is to make sure the fluids not ice cold because of the fluid is super cold you would have way too much ATF fluid. It's a ballpark thing It doesn't have to be perfect but you just want to make sure the fluid is not cold That's the most important part. I'm sure you can do the OB2 I do not have the part numbers however it will be on the lookup guide here and as far as crush washers I do not get new ones I usually reuse the old one most important thing is to put it on the way it came off and it will seal just fine. Us Taco fans would be interested in what he paid for that used Pro. I have a 2021 Tacoma TRD Pro with only 3,800 miles AND I’ve already changed ALL MY FLUIDS over to Amsoil Signature!!!! Engine, front and rear differentials, transfer case and the transmission. I pumped in 12 quarts into a 10.9 system so I pretty much have 100% Amsoil in that beast. My plan is to change all fluids well before OEM recommendations. My 6 month Amsoil membership just expired and I was wondering if I can re-up with you Eben? I did the same thing for my 2019 Subaru Outback at 23,000 miles and it feels like the car is riding on FRICTIONLESS bearings!!!! No lie.
I forgot to mention another uberly anal thing I’m doing. I built a bench top bypass filter setup. I use Fumoto valves in place of my oil drain plugs which makes it SUPER EASY to drain my oil. I drain my oil every 1,000 miles and send it through Amsoils 2 micron bypass filter and reintroduce it back into the engine.
Awesome to hear yeah I forgot what he said I think it was 29,000 is what he spent on it. Just depends on the vehicle most vehicles you'd want to do the trans fluid about every 20 to 30,000 mi of city driving. If you're doing all highway driving you can do anywhere from 50 to 100,000 miles just depends on the temperature the vehicle's driven in and how much highway driving you're doing. 🎬 Professional YouLubher: Eben Rockmaker Regency Gold Direct Jobber AMSOIL Specialist (Dealer#: 5331179) 702-472-3614 ✅ If You're New To AMSOIL I Recommend The AMSOIL 6 Month PC Membership because it will save you about $33 on a $100 purchase after the difference in tax - www.amsoil.com/offers/pc/?zo=5331179

That's a great question Craig there's a lot of things that can come into play but the main reason is longevity a lot of dealerships rely on replacement parts transmissions differentials motors these are big money makers for dealers. Did you know a oil manufacturer can call a lubricant a Full Synthetic when it's only 25% synthetic? AMSOIL is different because it is 100% Synthetic and has a higher film strength keeping the metal parts separated. AMSOIL allows less friction, less heat, less wear on the component.

Psssssst!! The truck should be idling whilst draining any excess. If you drain the excess fluid while the engine is off, you’ll be about a quart low. I noticed while watching the vid, you drained the excess fluid with the engine “off”.

You already went to the trouble of taking off the pan why wouldn’t you just change the filter since it’s off?
Not sure what filter you mean?
I agree I’m going to change mine when I do my service
@@Syntheticoilprotection I think he meant the transmission filter? I was wondering is it necessary to change that with every atf drain?
You can do just a drain and fill if you want to👍
@@Syntheticoilprotection yes I agree with Eben. The Car Care Nut on TH-cam who’s a Toyota Certified Mechanic said if you do your ATF changes on time and your transmission is fine, no need to change the transmission filter.
On the Tacoma I was told that the filter needs to be changed. I have a 2020 Tacoma could you please confirm? Great vid by the way.
Do you have to replace the transmission pan gasket if you open it? Or is it reusable?
It depends on the component each vehicle has a different component that's the transmission some vehicles have two three four different transmissions on the same model it depends on the time of year it was built so I personally do not remember every vehicle some do have reusable gaskets that are really solid you can use them two three times easily some are very thin in a rip apart when you take it off so it just depends on your exact transmission that's on your exact year make and model.

What's absent from your process is the running of the engine to the temperature the trans fluid should be before you drain it from the overflow, since the fluid expands as temperature rises.
Yes you want to get the transmission warm to do the final fluid level that's correct
So you’re adding approximately 3 new qts to the remaining 7.8 used QTs that are still in the torque converter 🤷🏼
That sounds correct. It depends on the vehicle and transmission on that vehicle some hold a lot of fluid some transmission pans hold a little it just depends.

Eban, I ordered my ATF. Super excited. I'll keep you posted.

My only question is,
What is the reason for designing the transmission to have the fluid PUMPED upward in order to fill it rather than entirely by gravity from up above like with the an oil fill???
Why???? I don't understand this reasoning.
Tell me about it I don't get it either and there's a lot of vehicles you'll see on the channel That just don't make any sense but when you take care of them they can run better than brand new by choosing the right fluids🥇

What about just replacing exactly the amount that came out ? I have a 14 4Runner
Usually that's good however sometimes you can burn off a little bit of oil because over time the oil actually evaporates and you can actually lose a little bit of volume also depending on the temperature when you take out the fluid it'll also expand and contracts so the best thing is just to fill it until it starts to overflow make sure the fluid is warm and or at operating temperature and you'll always be good the only thing you don't want to do is overfill it by filling it when it's cold because when the fluid gets hot it actually expands quite a bit about 10% in volume and you don't want to overfill the transmission by a quart and a half it could overflow and/or cause damage so you just want to make sure it's warmer hot once you top it off
I just discovered your channel. Great job!
Thanks!!!
Happy to have you Steve 💯
Curious why you never followed the toyota recommendation and jumped the ODBII pins to put it into transmission temp mode? Using a digital thermometer on the outside of the pan is a known unreliable method and its irresponsible to tell people this is ok...
Thanks for sharing that with the channel Sean I never knew that
I have heard similar advice from dealership mechanics but they added that this is because it is believed that the transmission temp mode is more reliable than the level of error introduced with a man making the measurement with a tool.
I love the Tacoma's, Toyota makes a great vehicle

Question how many times can to reuse filter and was that I pounds torque or was it inch pound. Love Amsoil. Oh yeah one other thing always and I mean always pop the fill plug first.
Not sure which torque screws you're talking about also I'm not sure what filter we're talking about?
@@Syntheticoilprotection filter in the transmission. Was just wanting to make sure all the bolts were ft lbs and not inch lbs.

Why not just pop loose the trans hose off the cooler while its running to get it all out, then refill that amount back in?
Oh yeah that's the best way to do it if you have plenty of fluid you always want to make sure you get about five extra quarts then what you need and then you just need to have two or three people ready to turn the car on and do it definitely the best way however you need to have many people focused and ready and you need a lot of extra fluid to make sure you're ready to turn it off at the right time.
We do have a video on the channel where we did that procedure if you type in Amsoil engine flush 1500 pickup you'll see it😊

💯, yes sometimes they're loose sometimes they're super tight I've used different sockets and they are sometimes really tight and as long as it's tight you don't have to worry about stripping it.
I think these are almost a direct conversion it just depends on the size.

Can you pump the fluid back up the check bolt?
Yes that's another way of filling the transmission there is a fitting that threads in to that straw in that straw is the check level at operating temperature yep we also have a lot of other videos on the Channel showing that process all different types of pumps can be used from a hand pump to an electronic pump also you can use an easy squeeze bag and you could actually squeeze the fluid in there as long as you have the fitting in correct connectors with a tube👍

💯😃, awesome yeah you'll be blown away!!!
This commercial for Amsol oil. People are changing transmissions fluids every 26K, others switching from Toyota ATF to some unknown brand and are proud of it…. 🤣
How often are you supposed to do transmission service?
Visually inspect the oil every 30,000 miles or 36 months. If it’s severe, replace it every 60,000 miles or 72 months.
Just depends on the vehicle most vehicles you'd want to do the trans fluid about every 20 to 30,000 mi of city driving.
If you're doing all highway driving you can do anywhere from 50 to 100,000 miles just depends on the temperature the vehicle's driven in and how much highway driving you're doing.

about how many quarts did this process take??? Thx
I think it took six and a half because it's the oversized pen.
I would always grab a couple extra quarts also I recommend doing a double drain and fill so on something like that you'd probably want to just get a case of gallons that's 16 quarts and then you can always come back in 30,000 and do another pan drop you'll see a huge improvement in the shifting smoother and you'll also extend the life of the transmission exponentially.

Have you ever tried Amsoil Tim?
If it's such a great product, why doesn't Toyota use it?
That's a great question Craig there's a lot of things that can come into play but the main reason is longevity a lot of dealerships rely on replacement parts transmissions differentials motors these are big money makers for dealers.
They recommend very long intervals to help expediate expiration on components.
The biggest money maker at a dealership is the parts department.

Sometimes.
If it's an older vehicle and the transmission was neglected sometimes it's a good idea to do a full engine flush however you need to have a couple extra people to help when you remove the return line It's a little bit complicated so that's why I usually just do a drain and fill a couple times

Some places call it that it just depends on their terminology basically all you do is just drop the pan on most vehicles and then change the filter some Vehicles the only thing you can do is just drain and fill it so you want to be very clear of what their service is and also good to ask if they'll let you watch them install it that way they're up and up and honest
