How to Service a Sealed Toyota Transmission

  • In this video, I perform a very simple version of a Toyota/Lexus transmission fluid exchange service, for cars with sealed (aka no dipstick!) automatic transmissions. I do my best to explain the procedure in a really generic way so it may apply to many more Toyota vehicles.
    🔧
The cars used in this video are:
a 2006 Lexus LX470 with the 4.7L, V8 engine paired with the A750F Automatic Transmission (which is also found in the 4Runner, Land Cruiser, and GX 470)
    and
a 2009 Toyota Tacoma PreRunner with the 4.0, V6 1GR engine and the 2WD version of transmission in the Lexus (lending it a different name, the A750E).
    🔧
In case you are wondering why I did not show how to put the vehicle into transmission temp check mode: there are two reasons. The first is that the temperature check procedure does not apply to all vehicles. For example, this Tacoma does not have that option. The second reason, is that I tried to explain the concept of check mode, without being able to show it, and the video got long and wordy. There are other great videos out there that can explain this, I am sure, and if not, you bet I'll be making one when the opportunity arises and upload it here on TH-cam.
    🔧
    Service notes:
    - Make sure that you have test-driven the vehicle prior to servicing (you want to perform this drain and fill procedure on a cold transmission) and if the test drive and service are within the same day, that you give yourself plenty of time to let the fluid cool back down. I hope you sold the customer a few more jobs! :)
    - The vehicle MUST be on a level surface to perform this service, so verify that first.
    🔧
    Tools used in this video:
If you liked the beaker I used in this video, you can find it here: 5000mL Capacity Beaker: amzn.to/3Do0nOm
The badass fluid transfer pump can be found here: amzn.to/3JoAYI4
    OR
Here is a basic Performance Tool hand pump that can be found at your average auto parts store: amzn.to/3HhuCaT if this is a tool that you will only use once every 60k miles.
Here is the Infared Thermometer I used in this video: amzn.to/3DorpVI (bought it at AutoZone, I think...)
    🔧
    Parts used in this video:
Toyota WS Automatic Transmission Fluid, 6 Pack: amzn.to/3Y3Pnxy (I just get mine from my dealer, its actually a better price than anything you will find online)
Drain plug crush washer: 35178-30010 (I always ask the dealer to thrown in the gaskets for free when I buy the fluid, just like they do with the oil drain plug gasket when you buy the oil filter.... or is your local dealer not that cool? If not, a 10 pack can be found here online: amzn.to/40ptHOD and though you probably don't need this many, it seems to be the best deal!) Note: the overflow tub/check port uses the same gasket and has the same torque specification.
Fill Plug O-Ring: I actually get this out of a generic kit rather than buying from Toyota (WHOA, I KNOW!) but just be sure that the O-ring is intended for use with transmission fluid!
    🔧
    Torque Specifications:
    Drain plug: 15 ft lbs
    Check Plug: 15 ft lbs
    Fill Plug: 29 ft lbs
    Temperature Specifications:
    36 to 46°C (97 to 115°F)
    🔧
Wonderful background music by Ikson: / spring-free-download
    🔧
    Equipment I use for filming:

    Camera: amzn.to/3EAuhyp

If I'm putting up with my crazy parents and narcissist sister on this trip (when we got lost for a day and a half it was the maps fault) I'm not suffering an automatic on the autobahn, even if it is a Ford kuga. Diesel.
It makes me sad I can't find any reasonable modern vehicle with a manual transmission.

With the guidance of your video I was able to refill the transmission pan myself, check the levels and check the filter in the pan (from another video) and my 4Runner is running perfectly without any problems!!! Also THANK YOU for using a tripod or extremely steady hand work on your shots. I know I am late to the game, but thank you for sharing your knowledge! Just did four drain and fills on my 2018 Tundra. My Toyota tech said since it is a sealed system there isn't any reason to change the transmission fluid until 100K. Once I saw the condition of the ATF after my first drain, I was glad I changed the fluid. Thanks again for helping everyone!!!

I did mine on the no dipstick Camry at 50K, the oil was dirty. Pulling the pan out, magnets had sludge on it. Oil cheap, transmission not so much.

Another excellent video that never goes out of time. Unfortunately, as much as I wanted to do it myself I don't have any of the tools and equipment. I had to cave and take it to the Toyota dealer here in Japan. I actually watched them change the fluid but they hooked it up to a fancy machine. They also used Castrol Transmax Pro fluid. I was a bit surprised how they did it.
I am more pissed that they did away with the dipstick, so we can't even easily check the level or the color of the fluid anymore. :(

This is an AWESOME video of how this miserable and seemingly terrifying job can be done "easily" and affordably (the most important items needed are patience and lots of time). Yeah, the garages and dealers are NOT interested in doing this job because it must be done at a specific temperature (requiring time for engine cool down, etc) and some interest in wanting to do the job right... all too often the shop will just SAY they did this job when they did not. Even worse, they do the job WRONG (by checking the fluid level when it is too hot (and "heat expanded"), letting the fluid out and thereby starving the tranny of needed fluid, and then telling the customer the fluid is at the correct level (and maybe even believing it), but having actually made the situation WORSE and more likely leading to tranny damage. Thank you, Faye, for doing the OUTSTANDING job you've shared with us all here in your video!
