The Legendary Alfa Romeo 164 ProCar

  • The FIA ProCar series was intended as a sideshow to the #FormulaOne weekend that would have seen the drivers compete on Fridays using cars that looked remarkably similar to showroom models.
    The choice for the base car naturally fell on Alfa's newest model, the 164. After some initial work by Alfa Corse and Dallara, the design and construction of the chassis was contracted out to the British F1 team Brabham, which supplied two tubs codenamed BT57/01 and /02.
    With no other manufacturer showing similar commitment, the ProCar never became a reality, with the fastest #Alfa164 ever making just one public appearance at Monza, during the 1988 Italian GP weekend.
    Driven by F1 star Riccardo Patrese, the wail of its V10 engine wowed the crowd during a few flying laps, after which it was consigned to the #AlfaRomeo Museum in Arese, near Milan, where the two cars built are preserved to this day.

    I really wish the Procar championship came to fruition. A race series with the 164 V10, versus F1 opposition from Ferrari, Ford, Honda, Lamborghini, Renault.... yes please!! Class 1 DTM with 3.5 F1 engines - magic.

    I think the competition, was afraid of the incredible sound it made! (and the unprecedented top speed!)

    Excellent video again! That 164 would be an great "sleeper" car! Imagine going to the track and blowing the doors off a Porsche or Ferrari. I would even put my mother-in-law in back seat to further confuse the other drivers!

    • @Matteo_Licata
      @Matteo_Licata  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It would fool everyone... Until you started it up, though! The V10 scream would give the game away instantly :)

    • @fastcargtv6
      @fastcargtv6 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      There are 2 issues with that. There's no back seat. The silhouette of the upper part is there, but under the belt line there's the engine cover. The other's when the V10 screams at 13000 rpm no one can sleep, so it couldn't be a sleeper anymore!!! HAHAHA :)

  • @minoassal

    That V10 engine and its designer pino D'Agostino went to help Schumacher win all those races ...

    • @Matteo_Licata
      @Matteo_Licata  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, yes indeed about engineer D'Agostino, not so much about the V10 itself, as Ferrari's later V10 were completely unrelated to that old Alfa V10

    My father had a 164 with a 3 litre 16 valve Busso engine for almost 15 years until it was sold to an enthusiast who would restore it. The original owner custom ordered it in metallic green with custom wood interior trims. I have so many memories tied to that car. I got to drive it for the last few years and no other car has come close to it. The engine that pulls constantly through whole RPM range with instant response and amazing sound, super comfortable seats and sitting position, it was a sports limousine for sure. True Italian car.

    Che mostro! What a fabulous machine.
    I had never heard of it. I had never heard of the race series.
    72⁰ is a sacred V-angle.... It is the same as a Moto Morini twin from the 70s. Also the same as the angle between cylinders of a 5-cylinder radial.
    This is like a big boy's version of the mad, mid-engined R5 Turbo of Jean Ragnotti and other insane rally pilots.
    I had no idea this existed and am somehow happier now that I know.
    Thanks for the video.

    • @BanjoLuke1
      @BanjoLuke1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Matteo_Licata Yes. Lovely machine. I still have the 1977 "tre e mezzo Sport" that I bought on the mid-80s. Small, swift and full of character. I no longer ride a motorcycle, but cannot sell it. It now has a 507cc motor, so it is a bit more usable.... It is the two-wheel Lancia Fulvia Zagato.... Perfect.

    • @Matteo_Licata
      @Matteo_Licata  2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Glad you liked it! Those belts are there as a way to dampen tiny vibrations in the gear set that actually does the timing. The engineer who designed the engine was there, and he told us that. I had never seen such a solution!

    Another great video on a great car that only a few know about(minus a handful of true Alfistis). I am amazed at how true to a normal 164 this car is and from a distance it would only look like mildly modified car.

    • @Matteo_Licata
      @Matteo_Licata  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! Yes indeed, from a distance the ProCar looks so much like a normal 164 that it fooled us on that very day! I didn't know two cars were made, so when I saw the closed car beside the open one, I thought it was a standard 164 placed there for comparison!

  • @ElectricUAM

    I can only imagine why other carmakers shied away if they knew that Alfa Romeo was working on a ProCar. Alfa has had a long history of coming into a race and dominating if not the first years, then later. None of this was more obvious than in the late 90s.
    I drove my friend's 164 whose engine had been ported. I wasn't a fan of the 164, but Uwe Baker at Omega Motorsports really knew how to work on these cars and had borne some beautiful 75/Milanos, mine included.

    • @Matteo_Licata
      @Matteo_Licata  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't think any automaker has ever scared off another from joining a race series. It really seems nobody other than Alfa cared about the Procar idea

I used it to instruct students in high performance driving at Willow Springs Raceway. Despite being an Alfista, I honestly find it hard to understand the myth that has been created for this car, which has never had the opportunity to compare itself with any other, transforming itself into a salon prototype, without however launching future references for the brand.
