Do Transwomen Pose a THREAT to Women’s Sports?

  • In the first part of this conversation, Peter Boghossian presents two students at the University of Central Florida with three claims: “There are only two genders,” “There are only two sexes,” and “It’s possible to change sex.” They discuss reproductive organs, genetics, the difference between sex and gender, and potential consequences of expressing opinions on the topic.
In the second part, a third student joins the group to consider the claim, “Trans women should be allowed in women’s sports.” The new participant argues that male and female skeletons are generally indistinguishable and that swimmer Lia Thomas proves that trans women are not a threat to biological women in sports. See the links below to learn facts about the topics discussed.

      sex:
the state of being either male or female in most species of metazoans. In humans, each cell nucleus contains 23 pairs of chromosomes, a total of 46 chromosomes. The first 22 pairs are called autosomes. Autosomes are homologous chromosomes, that is, chromosomes that contain the same genes (regions of DNA) in the same order along their chromosomal arms. The 23rd pair of chromosomes are called allosomes (sex chromosomes). These consist of two X chromosomes in most all females, and an X chromosome and a Y chromosome in most all males. Females, therefore, have 23 homologous chromosome pairs, while males have 22. The X and Y chromosomes have small regions of homology called pseudoautosomal regions. The X chromosome is always present as the 23rd chromosome in the ovum, while either an X or Y chromosome may be present in an individual spermatozoon cell gamete.
An extremely minute percentage of humans are either (anatomical) hermaphrodites or of indeterminate sex (or to be more accurate, disordered sex). That does not negate the incontrovertible FACT that there are but two sexes/genders. In order for reproduction to take place, there is the requirement of a female ovum and a male sperm to unite, and because the entire purpose of the gender/sex division of most species of animals is to enable procreation, the sexual identity of an individual is best classified according to the gametes produced by the individual in question. There is no third gamete. Cf. “gender”. Both terms (“gender” and “sex”) originate from Latin words: “genus” (meaning “begin”; “birth”; “kind”; “race”; “gender”) and “sexus” (meaning “sex”; “division”; “gender”).
If the reader is curious to know the reason for this term being included in the glossary of “F.I.S.H” (apart from the fact that it is actually used in a handful of chapters), it is because, in recent times, LEFTISTS have been desperately trying to change the meaning of the words “sex” and “gender”, in order to serve their immensely-perverse agenda to destroy civil society with their hateful, wicked, immoral ideologies, especially by promoting the nonsensical idea that a person is able to transition from one gender to the other.
      gender:
the state of being either male or female, and because the entire purpose of the gender/sex division in most species of animal life is to facilitate procreation, the sexual identity of an individual is best classified according to the gametes produced by the person in question. There is no extant third gamete. An extremely minute percentage of humans are either “intersex” (typically referring to those who are anatomical hermaphrodites) or of indeterminate gender (that is, not easily determined by a cursory inspection of the external genitalia), but that does not negate the incontrovertible scientific fact that there are only two genders. As far as we know, there has never existed a single human being with the ability to BOTH conceive a child in his/her womb and, simultaneously, successfully inseminate a woman (or in more disturbing terms, for a hermaphrodite to inseminate him/herself). And even if such an individual has existed, that person would be a combination of BOTH male and female, and not some imaginary, novel third gender.
In those rare cases in which a human is born without gonads, the other characteristics of sex/gender would be taken into consideration - firstly, the allosomes (sex chromosomes) found in the DNA of every cell, and then, any extant genitalia, since even those females who have experienced the misfortune of being born without ovaries, for instance, usually have their remaining sex organs intact).
Cf. “sex”. Both terms (“gender” and “sex”) originate from Latin words: “genus” (meaning “begin”; “birth”; “kind”; “race”; “gender”) and “sexus” (meaning “sex”; “division”; “gender”).
So, essentially, the only significant distinction between the two terms is that the etymology of “gender” pertains to the beginning of things, as can be plainly seen by the other English words that originate from "genus", such as “generic”, “genetic”, and “generate”, whilst “sex” is a scrupulously-literal translation of the Latin cognate “sexus”.
The mere fact that the word “genitals” (referring to reproductive organs) is very closely related to the Latin “genus” is further evidence of the assertion that the term “gender” refers to the binary division of human (and of course, many non-human) sexual identity, and NOT to any taxonomy based on emotion, feelings, psychology, or any other non-biological categorization schema.
If the reader is curious to know why this term is included in the glossary of “F.I.S.H” (apart from the fact that it is actually used in a handful of chapters), it is because leftists have been desperately trying to change the meaning of the word in recent times, in order to serve their immensely-perverse agenda to destroy civil society with their hateful, wicked, sinful, objectively-immoral ideologies.
Until relatively recently, the word “gender” has ALWAYS been used in the etymologically-accurate sense of the term, and even in the former case, predominantly where leftist ideologues comprise a significant proportion of the population. See also “leftism”.
If you are truly wise and intelligent, you would surely have recognized several amazing secrets contained within the body of this treatise, “A Final Instruction Sheet for Humanity”. However, perhaps the most secretive secret, shall forthwith be revealed:
It is IMPOSSIBLE for a human being to change his or her sex/gender! (You are implored to keep this secret - do not tell a soul!!!)
For example, a man who castrates himself and wears a skirt or a dress is simply a mutilated, transvestinal male - not a woman or a female. Similarly, a woman who attaches an appendage resembling a phallus to her crotch and dons a pair of pantaloons, is merely a transvestinal woman with a fake penis between her thighs, and not a man, nor a male, in any accurate sense of the terms.
Actually, I would contend that any “man” who excises his reproductive organs was ALWAYS a dickless “man”, metaphorically speaking. 🤪

It was disheartening to witness the situation unfold. Initially, when only the first man and woman were engaged in the conversation, their authenticity was evident. However, as soon as the other person joined the discussion, both individuals seemed to withdraw. It appeared that they lacked confidence in their knowledge on the topic and hesitated to challenge the newcomer or potentially upset him.

Now, that being said , the only reason why she got the position was because the school didn't want to deal with a lawsuit. She suited up and every game she played in she didn't contribute one thing to the game. She was running in circles just trying to keep up with us. She was bumped off the ball every time she received the ball from a pass, missed every header she went up for and just couldn't handle the speed and physical game we played. She was a great person but didn't belong on the field with testosterone filled young men.

28:50 Storytime: I'm a man who was never really gifted at sports. One summer I joined an intramural co-ed league for fun. In one of our first games there was a girl (in her prime, whereas I was far from it) who clearly was much better than I was; it was humbling, but she admitted to having played soccer for years, and been playing league games for some years too. By the time we reached finals, a month and a half later, I was already out playing her.
Now I don't say this to brag. I was taller and stronger than her to begin with, but lacked the other skills of the game. The slight gain of skill was boosted by those other attributes.
It was a testament to me at the kind of physical advantages men have over women. Women's greatest strengths tend to not be physical, and shouldn't be disparaged.

Once I was able to control the ball a little bit, I could run laps around them. I would actually have to restrain myself when playing against other women to avoid causing injury. If you’ve ever played sports and play vs women who have played and even have much more experience it becomes obvious how much of an advantage there is between men and women. Our lungs, muscle density, bone structure even our brains are wired better for competition. I respect them, but we’re too different to compete against eachother fairly.

The skeleton argument is poor. You get tall men and tall women, and short men and short women. Female skeletons generally have a wider pelvic carriage, and the femur bone turns more inwards towards the centre of gravity because of the wider hips. There are clear skeletal differences. Also, once you've been through puberty, the hormones do make a difference, even if you take female hormone afterwards. He's not "well versed" at all. Having men pretend to be women and compete in female sports claiming to be women is wrong. In fact it's sick and should not be allowed.

The point they miss is that we don't give a shit about their gender. Normal people use sex and gender interchangeably. If you want to separate sex and gender, that's fine, but we can't order society around your subjective feelings. We will continue to order society around sex, and your gender is irrelevant. The problem is that they want to have their cake and eat it too. They want to separate out sex and gender, but then use their gender as their sex to be used on driver's licenses, and for sports, etc. Easiest way to defeat this is to just tell them, okay, sex and gender are different. We don't care about your gender, and we are simply going to order things based on your sex, which as you have said is different than your sex. Watch them flip out, because they know its the same things. They are practicing sophistry.

    • @thegrinderman1090
      @thegrinderman1090 ปีที่แล้ว +7

I'm not sure that's true. When we refer to someone with pronouns, 99% of the time we are basing that on their gender, not their sex. We don't know people's chromosomes, nor do we ask to pull down their pants so show us what sort of genitals they have (which would still not necessarily be 100% accurate). In a medical or sports context it's different, of course, as their sex needs to be known for that. But unless you're a doctor it doesn't really apply to you.
In our day-to-day lives we have always made assumptions from outward characteristics: face, voice, build, hair, etc. Usually this gives us an obvious answer. Sometimes it's difficult to say. Sometimes our obvious answer for their gender is actually not what their sex is at all. And in the future as transitioning methods improve, there may come a point where pretty much everyone 'passes' as their desired gender. You say you don't give a shit about gender, but I think in the vision of the future that I've just described, many conservatives would still have a problem with people being transgender.

When they're not around and I know I'm not going to be judged about it, I will often use the pronoun that reflects reality rather than the person's feelings (e.g., when discussing Bruce/Caityln Jenner).

You can tell the difference between male and female skeletons, almost at a glance, more than 95% of the time, even if they are the same overall height.
The female pelvis is structurally different, to allow a baby through it. This means even the angles of the hips and femur are different between the sexes.
Second to the pelvis, the skull is the most sexually dimorphic area of the skeleton. There are too many sexually dimorphic skeletal features to even list here.

And also interestingly recently the Dunning-Kruger effect has been apparently proven to be bad science based on its own data - apparently their statistical analysis was wrong, and that in fact with more correct analysis, most people whether performing well or badly have a similar idea of the ratio they fall in.

The point is, without the mens and womens divisions in sport, great women like Katie Ledecky wouldn't get the recognition they deserve and when looking at stats, men's averages in a given event hover around womens olympic level times and sometimes even exceed world record times.
Katie Ledecky shouldn't be expected to compete in a men's or coed division any more than men should be allowed to compete in the womens division regardless of how the man has altered himself.

Interestingly, in the 100 freestyle event, Thomas’ best time in the men’s division was 47.15. Now, at the NCAA Championships, she posted a time of 47.37, which reflects little to no change.”

This is, specifically, the distinction between raw power and agility and endurance metrics, like jump height, weight lift, fast twitch reflex, etc. Versus acquired and refined skills like accuracy, vestibular sense, fine motor control, . . . like free throw percentage, juggling, target accuracy, dribbling skills [soccer OR basketball] etc.

      @joanna1806 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I think some people understand what they think about something via their feelings, hence the use of “I feel” statements. It’s not necessarily that they don’t have solid reasoning to back up their claims, but they use their feelings about something as a portal to understand their thoughts about something. If they are met with new information that changes their mind, then their overall feeling about it will change. Later, if they are questioned about the same topic, they will still use their feeling to access their thoughts, but now it’s a different feeling (hence a different set of thoughts). This took me a long time to wrap my head around as someone who would always think first and feel second, but I dated a man with this process. Drove me mad at first, but eventually it helped me become more balanced between my thoughts and feelings.
Some people also use one or the other depending on the situation. My tendency as a 30 year old female is to use “I think” statements (my environment growing up was emotions = bad), but as I’ve learned to make friends with my emotions over the last several years, I’ve begun to recognize the utility of using one or the other depending on the context, and I find myself switching between both now. I feel that in some situations it can help get your message across in a more effective way. Communication is complex, and what matters at the end of the day is not what you said, but what the other person understood about what you said. So I’m all for reading your audience to choose what words to say to communicate your message to the intended recipient. :)

      sex:
the state of being either male or female in most species of metazoans.

I ran track in high school and in my freshman and sophomore years at college. I was decent in my events, sprints and middle distance, dominated at many meets and did well regionally although I fell just short of making it to state in high school or to any NCAA D2 championship . I could beat lots of the boys in high school in gym class, but I could not beat the boys who ran track. I definitely would never have been able to even stay in close range of the men who ran at the college level. Beyond men simply being bigger and stronger and having more lung capacity, there are other things a man does not have to deal with that women do have to deal with, a wider pelvic structure, even if slight, does not help a runner, there is also a monthly thing that is uncomfortable, can lead to sleeplessness, lower energy, and sometimes (as in my case) iron deficiency. These are things a biological male will never have to deal with. When the guy at the end said that high school sports are just for the fun of it and everyone can have fun just doing it, I have to disagree. As a female runner, I got to win or come close to winning many, many times both individually and on relay teams. It is fun to win. It can be, in the moment, devastating, but in retrospect, also fun, to see how close you can come to winning. I don't think I would have kept running high school track if I would never have had a chance to really know how it feels to absolutely dominate a race or to be one of the first ones across that finish line. It was something I did well and that was a big deal. If we allow biological men to compete with women at the high school level (or beyond), I can guarantee you that there will be no women dominating, very few women competing at the varsity level and no women having fun or making memories about what it feels like to strive for and achieve excellence.

On the last day, 4 players from the team came and we played against them and the coach. 5 pros vs a full team of the absolute best boys high school soccer players and they completely destroyed us. We scored one lucky goal from across the field that only went in because they didn't have a goalie.

I love these conversations. Peter is so good at asking thought provoking questions that dig down into the epistemic methods, without getting tangled up in the claims themselves. I think posing the thought experiments is a key part of this. By asking if someone would maintain their belief if the conditions were such and such, you can remove the layers of the belief and get at the root of it. IF the belief is based on evidence then it SHOULD be changeable once you’re shown reliable evidence that contradicts it.

I'm very skeptical about the guys statement relating to observing sex in skeletons... I'd imagine a paleontologist is observing the body over large periods of time, so I can imagine some confusion at times which might relate to stages of evolution but even with just a background in visual arts; you can have a pretty high success rate of "sexing" skeletons from just observing the pelvis, skull and rib cage.

    • @wdehey7853
      @wdehey7853 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I don’t see how there could ever be confusion at any point in time because the male has never been the sex to bear the children. There should have been a difference in the pelvic region since the beginning of mankind because the female has to have the bone structure for pregnancy.

You can easily tell the difference if a skeleton is a man or woman’s by simple eye examination due to basic differences in bone structure. There’s major differences in strength, speed, bone density, endurance, heart size, lung capacity and men are advantages in every category by large also. These are all scientific facts.

    • @GeraldSmallbear

Pelvis. I think you only need to look at the pelvis.
Oh, and the skull cavity. Men have much larger brains.
Also the legs are longer in males.
Then there's bone density of course.
      Average size of the skeleton.
I think women have a bifurcated pelvis also, it splits apart during child birth. I should look that up, in case i ever need to argue with a sophist.
That's just common sense stuff that everyone knows. I imagine there are myriad differences to the educated eye.

When examining a human skeleton, what does it mean to measure its "speed"? How does that work? Since its just a skeleton, obviously it isn't moving?
How do you measure its "strength"? All the muscle mass is gone.
How do you measure its "endurance"? What that even mean?
Bone density I get; that's an obvious physical property that can be measured. Lung capacity, based on the size of the ribcage, that makes sense as well.
The other properties I'm not sure about, especially "speed."

@@commandershepard9920 The pelvic bones affect the leg bones significantly:
“A wide pelvis with a significant angle of the femur can provoke genu valgum, accentuated all the more by the hyperlaxity toward which women tend. The legs then take on a typical X shape: the articulation at the knee is excessively solicited; the medial collateral ligament is overstretched; and the lateral meniscus, the cartilage-covered articular surfaces of the external condyle of the femur, and the lateral tuberosity of the tibia are subjected to excessive loads, which may lead to premature wear.”

      @Gumbatron01 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@commandershepard9920 I don't think Johnny Appleseed's comments about speed, strength, endurance etc were specifically about skeletons. They were more general observations about the significant physiological differences between men and women. Although, you could infer strength from a skeleton based on the area where muscles attach to the bones. On males, and on people who undertake frequent physical activity, such as manual labor, the attachment points on the bones are larger.
