MOST of the Police in the U.S. Are RACIST | Portland

  • In this conversation near Portland State University, three participants engage the claim, “Most of the police in the U.S. are racist.” Two of the participants stand on the “Agree” line and the third stands on “Disagree.” One of these participants is Peter’s former student.
The discussion takes various turns throughout, but the persistent difficulty is the absence of data and determining precisely how much and what kind of data would be enough to justify one’s confidence. All participants agree that data is the sticking point, which is why Peter is bewildered when one participant says, “Despite not having the evidence that supports it, I’m pretty confident. I would say I’m a 10 [out of 10].”
This conversation was recorded on May 11, 2022 in Portland, Oregon.

On top of this as well, one of if not THE MOST impactful thing on this is the leadership that guides the culture in the precincts. If there is an "us against them" mentality in a particular area from the leadership, then that 100% will boil over. If it's not like that, and the leadership does a good job cultivating a workplace that doesn't do that stuff, then it will change dramatically.

Special request: I really, really want to see a conversation like this facilitated between specialists who disagree, people that have researched the topic and are known cultural/public/intellectual figures but who are also curious and willing to model what a civil, data-driven, and sincere discussion can look like. It seems to me that this is what the culture is lacking most, role models showing what's possible to resolve issues. This happens occasionally (I think of Bill Maher sitting down with Ben Shapiro) but it's exceedingly rare, and so we have virtually every news outlet, congress, etc, all modeling an abysmal level of reasoning and respect for differences. And of course people mimic what they see their leaders do.. so I imagine a world in which that pattern was disrupted and people could view their role models making different choices other than simply demonizing the Other.

Anyone who says they are absolutely sure without any evidence should no longer be taken seriously. A moderator who can push for evidence and strike down logical fallacies along the way.. public debates.. well televised and broadcasted on social media could be an important step to avoiding all out civil war on these issues. As an individual who is now of the older generation, I would say that one of the things that frustrates me with all these newer younger generations, is that they refuse to take the time to do their own research. When these racial issues first started occurring in this country (i.e. the rioting, accusations of racial discrimination by the police throughout America etc…) I immediately decided “I” as a “responsible American citizen” should personally investigate and determine the statistical truth of the matter (math does NOT lie).
By surrendering no more that one hour of my personal time, and utilizing the internet, and the “Google” search engine, I was easily and credibly able to determine that what I was witnessing on TH-cam, and on “All” the mainstream media channels was utterly false.
Why can’t all the more recent younger generations do the same? It is “basic” math. Why can’t they also surrender a few minutes, or even a few hours of their own personal time to determine the “facts” of each national issue that occurs, so they can better take a concrete stance on each national issue as they occur? How can they responsibly vote for those candidates that are supposedly championing these national issues if they don’t? Why do they make generic statements about the magical “system“ being broken, based on nothing more than supposition and a gut feeling, versus easily attainable hard-data?
These younger people are NOT idiots, they are merely lazy and easily led. They are willing to remain narrowly focused are their specific educational goals (e.g. becoming a Doctor, Engineer, or some other professional occupation etc…) but will not step outside of their streamlined areas of chosen expertise to better understand the social calamities occurring all around them. I don’t get it.
Please put down your video games, and even your school books, and take a tiny portion of your time to care about the society in which you will one day be forced to live, and participate as a functioning member of this society. Please utilize your brain-power and intellect and review the facts. I’m absolutely certain you’ll find America, this great nation that has nurtured you, to be the most free, the most non-racist, and the most able-nation in the history of humankind. God bless you all, and good luck, because if you don’t step back and view the facts with a non-biased neutral set of eyes you are going to lose it. I sincerely am praying for all of you each and every day.

You know what I would love, is an extended version of this...like a series-long debate show, but it's a different style of debate. You take two people or teams, all of whom are conscientious and have a scholarly mindset (they don't have to be actual scholars). They both start off on different positions on an issue, and over the course of each episode they attempt to explore the issue with data, evidence, critical thinking and genuine framing of each other's position (i.e. no straw man arguments). Between each episode, they actually research the statistics, data and evidence for their supported position and then present those arguments during the episode. Here's the KEY: they won't be evaluated on whether or not they were right or "won" the argument. Instead, they are evaluated entirely on their methods for arriving at their conclusion. Did they site reputable sources? Were their arguments circular? Were the data cherry-picked or misleading. So, for example, someone who actually changes their position a bit by applying honest, critical thinking would score higher than someone who "won" the argument, but with deceptive arguments or dubious sources. Perhaps by the end of the season, both parties will end up on similar positions. I find the current norms of our society, in which there are two non-overlapping versions of reality a bit too bewildering, and would find such a show grounding.

Former cop here. The problem I have with these questions is those who think most cops are racist are basing their opinions on 1. Contact with a shitty cop. So they generalize based on anger. 2. What other citizens say or media. 3. They’ve never researched what is taught in the academy 4. Never attempted to get know an officer on a personal level or gone on multiple ride ons with multiple agencies to see how they do their job. “But they’ll only send you on a ride along with their best officer” ya, most likely, but they have no control over who that officer will be sent to assist. So you will see the behavior of every cop in that agency.
Good cops hate bad cops. They actually hate bad cops more than anyone else because good cops suffer the consequences of a shitty cops behavior. Good cops are on the receiving end of revenge for a shitty cops behavior. Good cops treat the small percentage of shitty cops as outcasts and wait for an opportunity to catch them in the act. Good cops aren’t perfect, we misread situations, get bad info, and even make a bad decision that unfortunately ends someone’s life and suffer the consequences of said decision. Please, I beg of you, think objectively, think of cops the same way you want them to think of you.
Most cops assume the worst until the citizen gives them reason to think otherwise. Even then there is still no complacency because it can turn deadly anytime. We don’t stop out with someone because of skin color, we stop someone to do what you hired us for. To ask questions and prevent crime. We don’t figure out if someone is an innocent citizen or a wanted rapist/murderer who’s ready to harm again unless we patrol, stop who we see, and ask for ID.

A great candidate for your “simplest answer” is that urban density amplifies crime in poor neighborhoods. If you look at Eastern Europe there are gang and crime riddled neighborhoods in the cities, while those neighborhoods and countries are predominantly racially homogenous. The same is true for most East, SouthEast, and South Asian countries.
If you go to places in America where the local population is mostly poor and white, you’re most likely going to be in a rural region.
It might be as simple as crime is just not as profitable, accessible, possible, or even necessary, in low density regions.
