- Discussion abounds regarding the definition of “woman,” often focused on social and emotional factors of womanhood. This claim at the University of California Berkeley raises the stakes: "Trans women should be legally treated as women."
One woman, a molecular geneticist, strongly disagrees with the claim, while another woman, an aspiring molecular geneticist, agrees. The third participant, a man, initially stands on the “disagree” line but recalibrates his confidence toward the end of the conversation.

Look if you claim to be a women, or chick, and you got a member between your legs. Then those people that go around saying "Trans Women are Women" are 100% WRONG, because trans women with a member between their legs are just NOT women, period. Especially when it comes to health care. Treating a person in a hospital as a woman, but they are a biological man is foolish.
I’m a woman and had to use a women’s public restroom recently, when I was done and opened the stall door, a very large man with facial hair, in a dress was standing directly outside of the stall. As a survivor of SA when he stepped towards me, I began having a panic attack. Women deserve their own spaces.

Yep! It's a good example of not really forming your own beliefs and opinions, but allowing others to do it for you. Her opinions weren't hers, they seem to be what she believes others would think are good opinions.
It's obvious that her main speaking issue was nervousness. It's obvious she's a gentle, thoughtful person, and the ones who thought different were bringing up rape, fear, and strong things like that. She was trying to deal with all that.
That's what I noticed. The ones who disagreed had more logic and facts while the girl who agreed had trouble even forming coherent sentences at time. She didn't even know what she wanted. And to her point on trans men being in men's prison is that we gave seen what happens even to gay men where it's an issue that is constantly brought up where gay men are beaten brutally and raped repeatedly by male prisoners so just imagine a biological woman who identifies as a man being in an enviorment like that.
The young woman who was standing on the “agree” line was basing her opinion on her feelings and her need to not offend. That’s what the younger generations has been taught. That offending others is tantamount to “causing harm” or “violence” to those who are offended. They’re convinced that hurting someone’s feelings is the same as physically assaulting them. It prevents good people from applying reason to arguments. Everything they say runs through the “don’t offend” filter rather than the “is this true” filter.
The molecular geneticist is truly courageous and I love her for it

What’s particularly interesting about that to me is when I was in my last year of college I had to get a “women’s studies” course credit so I took a LGBT class called Queer Studies. In one of the class sessions we had an outside speaker come in who was a PHD geneticist who was also a transgender woman (born male). She asked the question to the class, how many genders are there? Several of the students thought there were three as in
male, female & transgender. The speaker said that there are only two genders, male and female. She went on to explain that one can be trans male or female or more commonly, Cisgender male or female, but you’re either male or female. This was in 2008, nobody freaked out when she said that and nobody blew a gasket and claimed that saying that was somehow anti-trans, and nobody talked about pronouns. Fast forward to 2016 and then now and all of a sudden there are infinite number of genders and claims like gender is just a social construct, not to mention that there’s a population explosion of people claiming to be transgender.
I'm actually stunned by the fact that nobody asks the one true question! Why should we care about the subjective feelings of one's sense of identity but not about the objective well established biological characteristics?

To follow the rules presented here by Dr. Boghossian, I would change my mind if there's solid evidence of biological, hardwired origins of being trans, but there isn't any, not yet.

The woman on the disagree side made the claim the reason why transgender women are put in women prison is because women accepted misagony 8:16min. Also 8:30min "Women don't beat each other to death (in prison) but men do". I bet many here would consider these statements as "radical feminist" statements...but because she is on your side on this topic you don't call her out.

Of course, there have been conviced rapists who went M-to-F to get into female prisons, and have impregnated female inmates. Not the average, for sure, but reason enough not to allow it.
@@FungusMossGnosis The M2F inmates are actually at much higher rates of sexual convictions than the average man. These pathologies have a propensity to overlap. So they're actually taking one of the highest risk of assaulting women populations and placing them in there with women.
I work in a California prison and it’s even worse than you think. The courts, “mental health professionals” and prison administration has created a system for this to occur. It’s no mystery as to why male inmates want access to female inmates. Prison admin is allowing this even for inmates who have not been altered. Furthermore, at my prison we have a bottom altered trans-woman inmate who is still living in our male institution. I could say more but my job could be jeopardized. Female inmates should be made very rich from being victimized by this practice.

This is really hard to write, and I don't know who needs to hear it, but here we go: I was raped when I was a teenager in a place that was supposed to be women-only. I thought I was safe there, but I was not. I'm in my 30s now and have worked hard to get my life back, but last year at my gym, a trans woman who had not undergone surgery changed right in front of me in the locker room, and I completely froze up. I started shaking, and all she said was "it's okay girl, don't hate." I couldn't even respond I was so frozen. I wish I could have made her understand, but I'm sure she dismissed me as some kind of bigot. Ugh I'm shaking as I write this. I left the gym and didn't say anything, but how is this okay? If you do think it is okay, ask yourself why you feel that the feelings of transgender women should be given precedent over biological women who have gone through real trauma with biological men coming into their spaces?

Of course you froze! That was a normal response to trauma and the abnormal situation that gym put you in. That gym put you in an extremely dangerous situation. I am a SA survivor too. I was only 13. The first time I was "cornered" by a man after the event I froze like you, then ran like like heck!! I have been truly set free from the trauma, no fear/no pain, BUT I just went to a tea room last week and they had a "all gender" restroom!! I was definitely scared to be behind closed doors where men could just walk in and share the space with me. The insanity in society right now is mind-blowing!! How many girls and women have to suffer before they stop this dangerous & destructive behavior of putting men in women's spaces. Don't ever apologize for recognizing the absurdity and danger of having a man in your locker room/restroom/etc. I pray you will have full healing and release from the sin committed against you

Strongly disagree. Men who want to identify as women should be treated as human but biologically/legally/psychology I won't pretend that they are women. In shelters, rape crises centers, showers, toilettes, dorms, changing rooms, sports, prisons, medical settings there are reasons that separate spaces are provided. Feelings should never be prioritized over safety.

If we truly want to be full PC, then we need to just build a third facility for "other" that is the bare minimum. Like the "family" restrooms where its just a normal one toilet one sink bathroom separated from the main ones, just do an "other" category. If they don't want to be with their natural peers, then they can choose for their third option themselves. However, a woman can't get another woman pregnant. The fact that there is even a documented case of a "female" inmate getting *multiple* other inmates pregnant behind bars is a horrid human rights abuse.
@@ShaggyRogers1 Why not have bathrooms based on color and age too because some people dont feel comfortable around different people (it's racist that black people have to share spaces with white people or havent you heard that). Think about all the kids that would be protected by having a bathroom just for kids. Thats 4+ bathrooms now but there should probably be boys and girls for different ages because there are stories about boys raping girls. There should probably be a bathroom for gay people too because many gay men have been raped in bathrooms and locker rooms by other men. This would be needed in every business because its important to be inclusive and to make sure that people feel safe. It shouldnt matter that more space would be dedicated to where people pee compared to shopping. Or maybe everyone needs to suck up their feels and use the bathroom for what its intended, a place to pee, poop, vomit, wash hands and maybe change clothes. If people really cared about preventing rape shouldnt they not spend time with people they know (including spouses) at home. And why do you believe that rapists are going to respect a sign on a door? If theyre going to rape someone why would a sign on a door stop them? If a sign on a door isnt going to stop them why would they bother to dress up like the opposite sex (excluding fetishists)? And why do you believe that rapists would try raping someone in a public bathroom when they could be interrupted at any time? And if trans people should be punished for using the wrong bathroom then shouldnt females who cant wait in line (because its too long) to use the womens bathroom also be punished for trespassing into the mens bathroom. Same for single parents with children of the opposite sex (would you let a man you dont know take your young son into the bathroom, if not why would you let a woman you dont know take your daughter into the bathroom). Same for caregivers of people of the opposite sex (maybe theyre caring for an adult with severe autism). If trans people arent going to be punished (really? You want to spend resources on people using the "wrong" bathroom? Has climate change and all the other world problems been solved? This is really more important than anything else? Youd rather punish people for peeing in the wrong toilet rather than let police investigate rapes and murders? Or are people not going to be punished? If people arent going to be punished then why ban people from bathrooms? As for locker rooms no one says you have to use them. If you want to then there are probably stalls you can hide in until your comfortable to leave if theres a transwoman in there with you -even though transwomen would probably be using the stalls instead because they probably dont want to have to explain about their transness and just might not be comfortable having their dick hanging out-everybody has something about themselves that they dont like but it doesnt mean they remove it and they might not want to deal with the health problems associated with cutting it off).
JW if all men are rapists why would you let them be around each other. Why not have bathrooms, locker rooms and prisons where every boy/man can have space to themselves? And why let them roam around society at all? If all men (including transwomen) arent rapists then whats the problem with transwomen sharing the same space are biofemales?
If all that mattered was the ability to get another person pregnant then biomales who identify as men but are infertile should be put in womens prisons since pregnancy is all that matters. And if it really mattered that much then you would support that womens prisons be staffed by only women and had no male guests because women have been getting pregnant since the first time they were sent to prison. If sex (male/female) is all that matters then transmen should be put in womens prisons since theyre biologically female even though some have penis implants. How would you feel if you learned that Blaire White was repeatedly raped after being sent to a mens prison (hypothetical situation). She would be an obvious target because of her appearance but shes a biomale with a penis. Why should she be put in isolation, next to the very violent criminals, for the entire time shes in prison just because shes a target just because of her appearance (google her if you have doubts)?

Exactly babe. Trans women are minorities and literally don’t even make up to 1% of world population. Women however makes up half of the entire numbers. Also trans is not much of a thing outside US. So why do we, literally billions of non american women have to comply with things that are the last of our country concern.

I think 52% of them are, which is much, much higher than the general population of male prisoners. Some are in prison for killing women too. And ANY man can request to be rehoused in womens prisons, regardless of the lack of any documentation of being trans or the lack of any medical transition. And they are usually approved too.

All human beings deserve dignity, even men. I was at the pool with my son and there were 3 change rooms available; mens, womens, and family. We were in the men’s room and I looked down to see the most beautifully manicured foot I’d ever seen in a men’s room; well here in front of me was a woman who came across as ambiguous at best. So I’m now in a position where I have to expose my genitals to a member of the opposite sex because the 3rd option with stalls was unacceptable to her.
Though my physical safety wasn’t threatened I still felt uncomfortable.

As a woman who was once followed into the restroom by a creepy man, I understand the palpable fear of the woman who spoke on the right. The man who followed me said with a creepy smirk that he was trans so it was ok. He was dressed as a male and wore black nail polish. I was terrified and began screaming at him to leave. He refused to leave even though he knew I was terrified of him. The security guard looked helpless and ashamed because he was impotent to stop this man from creeping on me in a private space in a public place (the public library). This moment was traumatic for me, this moment where I learned that this creep had more rights than me as a woman. This trans movement is actually undoing all of the decades of work feminism has done to create safety and respect for women. If a man who wears dresses gets a pass to incite fear in women in their private spaces, then what kind of sick society have we created here? I will never forget the twisted smile on his face when I confronted him in that bathroom. I was alone with him, he stood between me and the exit, defiantly. I’m glad my next move was to run out screaming, before he had any time to do whatever he had planned to do next. I wouldn’t wish this on any woman. Please protect women and children. We have been the most vulnerable members of society for the longest time and now we are being gaslit and terrorized, with help from these laws.

I went to the ER for severe cramps in my lower abdomen. I was popping pain relievers like candy and it wouldn’t touch it. The first thing the doctors are going to consider is the fact I am a woman, female. There are many things that women experience medically that men don’t. The same goes vise versa. They ordered an ultrasound to check my uterus and ovaries. They found I had adenomyosis and I had to have a hysterectomy. Men will never experience that. You can call yourself a woman or man all you want, but in the end… you are not. Medically, physically and hormonal… you are different from the opposite sex. You can have this ideology of what being a woman is… you will never know what it means unless you are one. It isn’t a feeling. I am sick and tired of everything women have fought for going down the drain because we can “be whatever gender we want”. Boys don’t need to use girls bathrooms in schools. Men should never be in women’s locker rooms, prisons, sports, etc. If you are trans, more power to you. Live your life and be happy. Don’t undermine my safety and security to benefit your feelings.

Trans women have plenty at stake regarding bodily autonomy. Their access to healthcare is at risk; they experience sexism and misogyny; they are victims of sex and gender-based hate crimes; they get unalived for simply existing; they often spend years, even decades, pretending to be someone they are not; when their identities are not affirmed and supported, they have a high risk of depression and suicide. Trans women of color are at even higher risk.
So yes, trans women absolutely do have a stake in the topic of bodily autonomy and violence against anyone who is not a cisgender man. The patriarchy is happy to oppress all women, trans or otherwise.
Having a space for women and femmes that is inclusive of trans women doesn’t end female spaces. It just makes them inclusive. Acting as if every trans woman in a femme space is going to disrupt it, be a danger to others or will “end female only spaces” is disingenuous at best and hateful fear mongering at worst.

One of the vignettes (scenarios) that was used was about a female who was assigned to be a roommate with a "transgender woman" who is in fact a biological male and who had not gone through any physical transition and did not intend to. Yes, in the military you can get your "gender marker" changed in DEERS without undergoing any hormonal or surgical transition. So the scenario was that the female refused to be housed with a biological male, citing discomfort. The solution? Send that female to counseling to get over her discomfort. The captain delivering the class, an obvious lesbian woman, added darkly, "If she ultimately can't get over her discriminatory feelings, then the army is not the place for her." This is someone who has the power to kick people out of the military.

This is the truth of it that none seem to speak to. Female and male, at one time at least, meant one's biological sex. Gender was the social interactions that came from how a female or a male interpreted their biological body and navigated its presence within the world that was full of other females and males. Men act as they act in many ways due to having to deal with having a penis and testicles, no breasts. Women act as they act in many ways due to having a vagina, breasts, no penis or testicles. Men never have to deal with having a period or vaginal mucous, sore breasts, etc that women deal with, men don't have to at times fear the forceful penetration into their bodies that could lead to a pregnancy. Men can't get pregnant. Women never have to deal with unwanted sudden erections, sore testicles and a feeling of bloating that sometimes accompanies them, nor do they have to worry about if a glance at a man has made that man fear her or find her threatening. Of course there are many other examples, but these are the most basic ideas that help build female and male ideas of their own gender. They are experiences and the consequently the feelings that are built from those experiences.

What if the rate is higher, because transitioning from male to female brings more advantages, which don't happen the other way. Indeed I have not heard about a problematic case from women transitioning to males, like I haven't seen males security or opportunities takes away from them from transmen. The other way around though, we have these cases, where security and opportunities (like in sports and then getting stipendium/funding to a university e.x) are taken away, based on the bodily realities of biology in males/females in this world. I also haven't seen these problems come up a lot in earlier times, where it was not sufficiant to be counted to the other sex by just claiming to be the other sex, without actually fully transitioning.

It seems that the 'game' is meant to elicit the _rational process_ by which these people have reached a conclusion, but that's simply not happening for these youngsters - there is NO rational process. Their opinions are not reached any more, they are simply adopted - plucked up from a collection of Buzzword Bingo stickers, and stuck in place like a little logo on a Twitter account. That's why these opinions now are represented by handy little graphics like a black square, a rainbow, or a blue and yellow graphic. So it seems to be a misunderstanding to get people to explain the components of their rational process when the truth is usually 'I just identify with THAT group, and that's our group opinion'. I'm 55 and I really resonate with the geneticist. My heart pounds and I get so upset over this topic. I'm a survivor of sexual abuse from childhood and older, all men. This aspiring child has no idea what evil can happen in this world. I hope she doesn't find out the hard way. She's been protected so far, incubated - but only thanks to the suffering of women in her own history. She'll learn.

Just because you have not heard rational reasons why the issues discussed are not valid does not mean a rational does NOT exist. Biological sex AND biological gender identity BOTH exist. If you reject this premise you are simply rejecting the scientific consensus.
The reason why we should organize the prison system by biological gender identity and not biological sex is because we know for a fact that FAR more trans-woman are physically hurt by criminals in a prison simply for them BEING trans. Their are a few RARE scenarios where woman have been hurt by men whos gender identity was a woman. (this is demonstrated in all the available data). Also, the underlying premise that biological men are somehow more likely to rape people is FALSE when we know that the MAJORITY of biological men do NOT rape people.
The issue with organized sports is that it is a metric that evaluates physical capabilities. So, separating it by biological sex instead of gender identity has its advantages. The current research does suggest that being on HRT for over five years does mitigate these physical advantages to a great degree. That being said, I still think trans activist have to meet a greater burden of proof before allowing trans woman on HRT to compete with woman.
