    Welcome back to my channel.
    Watch how I make a Walnut, Curly Maple, and American Purple Heart mitred dovetail Tool Chest with Maple Inlaid Dovetails.
    I made the tool chest from a walnut slab. The top is biscuited curly maple and the bottom is made from four pieces of American Purple Heart that are tongue and grooved to allow for wood movement. I used purple heart on the bottom for a few reasons,
    1, It looks great
    2, Its super hard
    3, It has great rot resistance.
    I wanted to show How To Make / cut an Inlaid Dovetail without any Jigs or guides. I used a panel saw, planer / jointer table, thicknesser and bandsaw.
    I love working with wood and I want to show that having a hobby to keep your head busy can really help mental & Chronic illness .
    Finished with Osmo Poly x hard wax oil then three coats of Bison Wax burnished off with a buffing wheel.
    #veritastools
    I hope you enjoy.

    THE MUSIC IS ANNOYING; I GET IT. This was one of my first few videos a few years ago and editing, strangely enough isn't my field of expertise. I am learning and I'd like to think that my more up to date videos reflect that. There is nothing I can do about it now so may I suggest you turn the volume down and if that's still not enough then I'm very sorry, don't watch it.

    Amazing! So far beyond the limit of patience and detail that I would ever be able to manage. Having the video shows really well just how much time and effort goes into your pieces 👏🏼

    At several points in the video, my legs appear in the background. Is it safe to assume that I'm a celebrity now? 😂

      lol Sorry. err I'm not sure in total mate. Things take me a while as I can't do it for long due to chronic pain. I started it in September, and finished late October. I'm now planning the interior

    I think I understand why you cut a relief into the back of the dovetails before putting in the accent piece...
    But it looked like you did the same on the sides, and I cannot figure out why, or how it would be filled on assembly? (4.37 for reference, the relief on the side facing the camera)

      Hi, the rebate is cut into the back of both the tails and the pins. On the tails it gives you the depth of the inlay, then when you fit into the final pin socket, if you use a rebate, it hides the inlay from the inside of the chest. Also, with the inlay around the tails, the rebate is needed otherwise the pins would have the inlay in the way. It’s hard to explain. Hope that explains it a bit? Best way it’s to have a go, things become apparent when it’s directly in front of you. Thanks for watching

    • @davidbrown8428
      @davidbrown8428 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WoodScrape But why wouldnt you just plane the inlay flush with the inner face of the first peice?
      I assume the rebate is to grant more strength, but wouldnt the glue make it stronger than the original wood anyway?

    • @WoodScrape
      @WoodScrape  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@davidbrown8428 without the rebate, the joint wouldn’t fit together. My rebate doesn’t go all the way to the ends as I was cutting mitres to incorporate the top and bottom pieces. I’m currently making a box where the inlay goes through the mitre too

    • @davidbrown8428
      @davidbrown8428 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WoodScrape I think I get it... without the rebate on the tails, the inlay wouldnt wrap all the way around the tails... but im still not sure on why the rebate on the pins.... unless its to account for the thickness of the inlay... while keeping the thickness of the sides the same as the thickness of the front and back?
      How did you do the long strip of inlay along the top and bottom of the side? I can't work that one out.

    • @WoodScrape
      @WoodScrape  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@davidbrown8428 yeah for the inlay to wrap around where it does, you need to subtract the thickness of the inlay from the back of the pin board. It’s not my method, I learnt from The Katz-Moses channel. I started with his saw guide on older pieces but my muscle memory is starting to form and had a go without.
