11:36 Handy tip I ran across years ago, has saved many a finish for me: Keep an old toothbrush on hand. The bristles are perfect for raking toward any bit of debris in your wet finish, and scooping it right up out of there. Plus the lines they leave are so light, they'll usually flow and fill right in, or with minimal retouching. Give it a wipe with a damp rag (damp with water or whatever the solvent for that finish) to clean the bristles before it hardens, and you can re-use it for every project.
John, I have made multiple gift for my wife in my journey as a woodworker. Isn't it great to see the reaction? Beautiful craftsmanship in this project, and wenge itself is awesome. Nice work.
Dude, that is gorgeous. And, you made your hunny happy. And you "Reclaimed" good wood from a South bound project. Win, Win, Win, Win, Win. Just awesome, my friend.
I think your best project yet. I have made a ton of jewelry boxes like this and like to use shellac as well. If you are using the blonde shellac I think you may find using a rattle can shellac a lot more forgiving and infinitely easier. 4 or 5 light coats, sanding in between and you are done. You can literally apply the next coat in 20 minutes. I can’t believe a client sent that thing back, I’m going to have to look for that podcast, I want to hear that story......Thanks again for sharing this. Dave
Very nice John. Great to see a project involving hand power and fine detail work like you did here. Just surprised there wasn't another gift inside the jewelry box to further surprise her. She had a wonderful reaction though. And don't you love those 4 words of "Did you make this?". Kudos dude.
Remember kids. Jewelry boxes are for day-to-day jewelry. Put your heirloom or expensive stuff somewhere anyone walking into your bedroom would never bother looking.
The contrast between the wengé (that's how we write it in the Netherlands) and the oak is so beautiful!! My brother in law made two furniture pieces for his graduation with both oak and wengé. I think I will make some out of wengé and oak or maple or something as well! Keep up the good work!
Great job on the build! Had a lot of fun watching it, i really need to do a project with dovetails. I'm glad she enjoyed the gift, although i'm not surprised, it turned out really great. Thanks again John!
Gotta be honest, I fully expected her to open on of the drawers and there would be a ring in there. Great work, never heard of wenge but it's a beautiful wood.
Great work all around! Really loved the simple design of the drawer pulls. At first I thought you would drill and screw them in. The angled design is so much cleaner. Might have to borrow that one. Congrats on the engagement!!
*Me who`s attracted by exotic wood and Handworking* Oha! thats a really beautifull present! You´re a little bit like me, i show loved people my affektion too by making something with my own Hands and a bit of my soul. because everything you made habe some soul of you😊! I hope your future Wife like it as much as i like it. LG Lara
That turned out awesome. When you were doing the first bit of routering I was thinking “ dude you really got to get Makita’s cordless router” but then you bust that out later on. I have one and absolutely love it.
You’re lucky your girl likes you to build her stuff! Mine is always complaining about getting “stupid wooden stuff she doesn’t need” every holiday lmao
Hey john, funny thing is i just picked uo a piece of 4 quarter wenge. 5" wide by 6' long. Cost me $98... i wasnt in the market for any. The piece caught my eye and automatically like 5 ideas popped into my head so i took it. So yeah, you're right saying it's expensive. And that piece you made had alot. I deal with just designers. No clients, and when they mess up its on them so they can watch there commission go bye bye!! Not my problem. You kinda have to be like that though. Especially in new york. Someone has to pay for my time and materials. I don't eat any of that unless it's from my own doing. Which has happened a time or two....lol great job on the box & congratulations with your lady.
This was beautiful. I think I might try to build something like this for my wife. Her birthday is in July, so I have enough time to mess up 2 or 3 times first haha.
OH NO! You told her age! You better build a dog house now! You'll be in it lol. Just kidding. Good job. Love your videos and how you edit them. Keep up the great work!
First you tell her age, then you finally make her the personalized jewelry box she wanted, so you make it out of scrap lumber. Oh my, you have chosen the hard path my friend. Lol, the box turned out beautiful.
John...You made something beautiful for the most special person in your life and you shared it with us. Thank you Sarah. John... wood glue, how does it work? Can you tell us about it some time?
This woodworking book *TopFineWoodworking. Com* contains a great deal of details about woodwork. There are some designs in the book but it is primarily explaining the procedure of how to do various things and what tools to use to accomplish them. In general, this book fulfilled my basic desire to learn about wood working.?
What happened to the blog post for this project? It's not listed on your blog anymore, and in this video I'm having great trouble trying to figure out the thicknesses and sizes for each piece of wood you're using.
Good day John, I have to make a jewelry box for my mother in law. I searched TH-cam and found your video. First, i love love love the classey brass tab pull outs as it really contrasts the dark wenge ! Fantastic work. I have a question, the main box....do you remember how thick you made the walls ? Keep up the great content !
Great project, John. Tedious work but worth it. She's adorable. You better get a ring on that finger soon, big daddy! Though I think she's staying put seeing your dedication. :-) Box turned out perfect and looks great, man. Nice work all around. Troy
What is the powder that you use in the drawers and the top? I just need the name of the stuff please, thank you. I love watching your videos by the way you have taught me a lot of different things to try out.
Great video!!! Love the details 2 questions when are you going to get a small mill for your brass work, and the second WHY DIDN'T YOU SING YOUR POOR LITTLE HEART OUT!!🤣 love your jig the songs sounded like Chris LeDoux!
What in the heck is that flocking tool you used?! That's neat! Great job man I want to make someone like this for my wife. But in bed side table type of way!
*TopFineWoodworking. Com* , is a very comprehensive woodworking book! It breaks every little thing down, utilizing words, drawings, real pictures, and different diagrams. It`s unbelievably informative and helps me feel like I could help my sibling while we make our furniture together.?
Fantastic job! Was wondering if you might have a link to the flocking you used in the drawers? Thanks and as always, keep up the great content and work!

Beautiful piece for a beautiful girl; lucky guy!

Hey, I change my mind again, I want that entertainment console now.
Would you happen to have a list of the size specifications for this box?
What did you mix in with the shellac?
What was that powder that you were pumping? Ive never seen anything like that
