This weeks woodworking joint is Triple Inlaid Dovetails. It’s a beautiful decorative joint used in furniture and box making. As far as I can tell this is the first example of hand cut triple inlaid dovetails in woodworking. It takes some practice but it teaches you how to saw ultra accurately and it is an incredible way to practice super accurate dovetail techniques. Let me know in the comments what joint you’d like to see next week. Thanks for watching! Please like, comment and subscribe. Cheers!

I feel like it would be ludicrously complex, but the first thing that I thought of watching this was to combine this joint with the houndstooth dovetail. I can sort of imagine how to do it, but my lack of experience is not helping. That said, even just a single-inlaid houndstooth would look amazing.

If you were to make a full box for these (or the double) would you make two separate halves first and then work to finish the box, or just keep moving around the box until complete?

  • @Itslvle
    @Itslvle 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Now this may sound like heresy, but hear me out. Cut tiny tails and build the inlay part out of veneer. So in this case, bloodwood with tails, then maple veneer, then bloodwood veneer and again maple veneer. Now make the pins to match your veneered tails. You will get absolutely flawless consistency with your inlaid dovetail thicknesses and it's much easier to make the inlay parts really thin. It will also help with keeping the actual structural tails and pins thicker making it more sturdy. Not that you'd be doing this somewhere where you need a lot of strength anyway, but a little extra sturdiness doesn't hurt.
Of course it will be "cheating" to some, but really you're still doing a regular dovetail completely normally. It's just the extra bling in-between that you're making easier.

My hero. I don't understand most of this stuff, but I'm not afraid to try. It's just wood, right? (preferably cheap wood to start). How much wood have you had to trash? I'm assuming a lot to get to where you are, and that's why you're my hero. Using sawdust to fill in the imperfections by saying that none of us are perfect is awesome. So, as I've asked before, when are you going to have a class?

  • @genelomas332

Great step-by-step tutorial, and great info.
however.. your cameraman either needs to learn how to hold focus on the subject, get a better camera, (even my mobile phone tracks focus better, and it shoots in 4k), or you need to find a cameraman who can..
It's REALLY painful to hear you describing precise measurements but to see your hands and the workpiece all blurry, all the while the Axiom label on your cnc is in focus..

Great job on the dove tail. It is important to constantly upgrade your skill level. Regardless of how the first piece comes out, each challenge improves your ability. Do not pay attention to negative comments because it is easy to be critical. It is not easy to improve.

Best two pieces of advice you’ll ever get: “Stay safe in the shop” and “take life by the knackers” 😄 Making dovetails suddenly turned into existentialism. Excellent! (Btw English not being my first language, I have no idea what “knackers” mean, but I’m afraid to ask) You all have a nice day, mine certainly just improved, and whenever I come across a challenge in life I will remember to “triple my dovetails”. Thumps up to your skills and general attitude towards life 😉

Dude, (hey, I am from a California beach town so I can use "Dude") - as someone who has produced 60+ videos of my own, I can tell you that you have my respect and admiration for your video production quality. It may go unnoticed by your viewer (which should be your goal for seamless editing) but, Wow! all your camera closeups, different angles, music, etc. etc. Fantastic job. When I see you have released a new video, I always watch it, which is not the case for most of the video producers that I am subscribed to. And as a result, I often buy my new tools through you - good job of listing them. Today, i bought the Dovetail Saw and I already own your Magnetic Dovetail Jig. Please don't become another of the many producer "burnouts" - your stuff is too educational.

DUDE! Thank you so much for the kinds words. Marc, who works with me on production is a freaking genius with a camera and a keyboard and I couldn't be luckier to work with someone that cares about production as much as I do. I'm humbled and to be honest I really appreciate the reminder to stay the course. I truly love teaching and don't do TH-cam videos for money. I'm sure you've noticed but I don't even have commercials on my channel. I make my money from the products I sell and representing other TH-camrs for sponsorship and back end support. I'm going to be on the Made for Profit podcast this coming week and I'll talk a lot about it if you're interested.

Thanks for the trick on the caliper using this for the fine exact distances. Wouldn't have thought of that.

I really have to try a dovetail joint, let alone an inlayed dovetail. That looks awesome!

Thanks Jonathan for the motivational speech at the end! At the modern maker podcast event you gave me the same advice about doing stories on IG I still haven’t talked but this week I’m going to do it thanks for the reminder to just get out there and do it and not care what anyone thinks! You’re awesome and this joint was absolutely stunning!

Really nice - but who in the world would spend the time to build a box or even multiple with this? :D

Thank you and I would and have done it before. I did a video with Make something where we made an inlaid dovetail box. I actually have a design that uses these and am going to do a few more before I commit to doing a four corner box.

You lumped me in to everyone watching this video and assumed that I would not cut this perfectly and will need filler? I will have you know, that for the record, every single triple inlaid dovetail joint I have ever cut has turned out perfectly. Just like back when I was at Grand Lakes University I nailed the Triple Lindy for the diving team. Amazing stuff! Absolutely love the joint of the week series.
